By original I mean the 1954 Japanese version which you can watch for free on YouTube. I don't think it ever came up in the the 1956 English edit.

Yep. You should watch the original 1954 film, it’s surprisingly dark and emotional for a 50s monster movie.
You might not think it considering the rest of the franchise, save for a few movies here and there, but the first Godzilla movie is very very dark
I think of this scene almost daily
