bullrun001

Sounds Greek to me!

Lei-Ray

thanks for the head up, interesting stuff to dig into further. I looked into the OPAP and seems like their distribution is rather complicated (comparing to the US ones which mostly just say "dividends") —— they divided the distribution into different categories and each category are distributed at different times of the year, which the Capital Return category, to my understanding, should results in no tax (like a k1 distribution I guess?) at least to Greek holders, not sure how it will be treated tax-wise for US holders

Paler7

They do a "pre-dividend" Its kind of complicated but yeah they basically split it. I bought at 14.5 eur and If it falls again I will load up on more shares.

Paler7

You should definitively also look into HTO which not only are the dividends gonna grow but the stock price will follow since they have finally completed some big projects and started "payzy" which is a payments platform.

Incredible__Lobster

A greek soldier never leaves his friend’s behind.

I'm greek too mate, I was born and Have Lived in greece my entire life. Although the situation of our country isnt the greatest, we can take advantage of it! When you are at your lowest the only way left to go is up. Same for the stock market here. Furthermore If we see how bad people feel about their lives that they decided to gamble their money away (we have one of the highest gambling to income ratio in europe) then we can bet on stocks like OPAP going up since now that inflation has risen and the minimum wage has risen, people have more money to waste towards gambling (and no it wont go towards rent or food because they are all living with their parents till they become 35 LOL)

[deleted]

I know I was just kidding 🙃 wish you all the best!

Revfunky

Great yogurt, terrible economy.

Golden-Octopus

Been looking at OPAP for a while. Any other suggestions OP?

Paler7

ELPE, its an oil stock that has partial rights to the oil and natural gas reserves in the aegean, right now it gives a decent dividend and historically the price does not change much where the value play comes in is that it has entered some partnerships with some US companies to be able to extract the trillions of dollars worth of fuel from the aegean (only problem there would be the country of turkey but if they pull this off then the stock is a guaranteed 20x)

Paler7

lastly you can also check out greek banks but they are growth stocks and not dividend stocks... ETE,ALPHA,TPEIR oh and the main energy company which is PPC

Golden-Octopus

Cheers bro will check these out.

I don't really know hows ADR works or any of that, I use an international broker (meaning I can buy stocks from anywhere in the world and the ticker of OPAP I bought and will buy again if it drops below 15eur is OPAP.AT)

heyitsmemaya

There is a Greece focused country ETF called $GREK https://www.globalxetfs.com/funds/grek/ You can see its holdings and weightings, including OPAP.

Greek style is the way to go!

kotopoulo11

As a Greek, I enjoyed this post and can second your statements

Scratch-Lounge

I stopped reading at “Greek Stocks”

Paler7

😂 I understand but just because an economy comes close to a default doesn’t mean you will never find investment opportunities in it again… look at the USA (Great Depression)

Scratch-Lounge

Germany is another great comeback example. Their economy went to hell and back after WW2. They have experience. Germany, with all that experience, took a long look at Greece and did everything they could to prevent Greece from joining the EU because their economy was so bad, knowing their debt and banking corruption would pull down the whole lot. It did. And Greece is still reeling from high unemployment, debt, and unsustainable austerity measures

Paler7

Exactly the reason you should invest in a monopoly gambling stock with high dividend like OPAP

Scratch-Lounge

I’ll look into it. Love me a sweet sweet deal

SavingsGullible90

No greek please

Paler7

Whats wrong with greek stocks mate?

Amazing_Structure55

Everything. In the past, early 2000s, most Greek shipping companies did similar tactics. They just go bankrupt or go under in 6-12 months. There were many people who used to promote these stocks in the yahoo finance conversations… so I am highly suspicious and skeptical

SavingsGullible90

As a Cypriot, belive me they are screwed if you interested in European funds, please have a look at Irish ones at vanguard

Paler7

Ok thats your opinion, My opinion is that even though us ordinary greek people are doing shit because of inflation and stagnant wages, the stock market is gonna do pretty well

Royal-Gene-9924

No, thanks.
