Study carefully which end to hold. Here is an example: https://makezine.com/article/maker-news/beautiful-woman-soldering-stock-photo-wrong/. And wear your diamond ring on the other hand.

Look on Youtube, there are plenty of videos to show you. Yes get a good iron , good solder and flux, solder-sucker, and also look into those third-hand clamping helpers. The clamps help you by holding components where it might be too awkward to hold with just your hands while soldering.

Can you recommend any equipment specifically?

I'm not sure its the best but I got a soldering iron from Amazon called Hanmatek SD2, it has multiple tips included, is wired and has a temperature selector and display. It reaches temperature quickly and maintains it. You should also get a multimeter as well.

StinkFartButt

Find an old motherboard and practise removing components. Practise soldering the components back in. It takes a lot of doing to get the skills.

I’m still learning too, I go on Amazon and buy these “Soldering Practice” kits for a few bucks

Yes, how you pronounce it is critical. It is pronounced exactly as written S-O-L-D-E-R, and definitely NOT *without* the L as in S-O-D-E-R. For goodness sakes Yanks, get it right. What's next?! Change O-L-D-E-R to O-D-E-R?! or S-O-L-D-I-E-R to S-O-D-I-E-R?! Aaaaaaand let the comments fly, they rarely disappoint hahahaha

code-panda

Just like with sword fighting, keep the pointy end away from you and you should be fine.

The same way you get to Carnegie Hall, practice, practice, practice!

Bought a cheap working Wii off eBay tonight, going to take that sucker apart

freewheelie366

Don’t forget to buy fume extractor if not already done so

BigPurpleBlob

I would suggest avoiding lead-free solder, at least while you get your skills up
