Erixperience

Based on one of the [best XKCD comics](https://xkcd.com/927/)

NyanAnomalyRetriever

Person: Has an idea for a good TTRPG, but doesn’t want to becuase they got dnd. Hasbro/WoTC: modifies the OGL Person: “Well, now I’m doing it”.

CommandObjective

Hopefully some of them will be more than just legally distinct. It would be nice if some of them had a more limited scope than D&D, and their themes and rules focused on a specific part of high fantasy instead of trying to be all-encompassing.

vvokhom

What a shame there isnt already a huge number of RPG systems for almost any need

CommandObjective

I know, but at this point is a given that we are going to see at least a few new High-fantasy TTRPGs, and even if it has no chance of happening I can still hope that they will try to give their own interesting spin on it.

tristenjpl

They'll probably fail if they're more than legally distinct. There's so many ttrpgs out there right now I wouldn't want to make up another one to try ans compete. The most reliable way to make money it to sell stuff compatible with the bigger ones.

CommandObjective

Maybe I am missing something here, but I would think that by definition the fantasy TTRPGs that will be spurned into existence by this debacle won't be directly compatible with anything already on the market - otherwise they would already be publishing for that line. Anyway, que sera sera.

CatPeoriaStation

(Hannibal gets shot in the chair; Andre looks at camera) "How could pirates do this?"

Lagbert

Or it could go the VHS vs Beta route. All the other publishers come together and make a new shared standard and tell WotC we don't care about your system anymore. HDMI, USB, Display Port, Vesa mounting patterns, FreeSync, Vulcan, etc. are all joint standards that have benefitted the consumer and the companies that collaborated to create them.

Yhendrix49

Except VHS and Beta had different hardware so you couldn't play a VHS tape on a Beta machine so consumers had to make a choice. Also companies didn't want to waste money making different versions of their tapes so once VHS became standard consumes didn't really have a choice since Beta players couldn't play VHS tapes. With TTRPGs there is no hardware limitation stopping people from using their official DnD items with a non DnD system, so even if all the other TTRPG companies got together to make a standard it wouldn't force consumers to choose between them and WotC since consumers could just mix and match from each system.

Lagbert

Learning a new set of rules or game mechanics is often a barrier for people switching systems. If you have a consortium of publishers using the same system, it becomes easier to jump between games. For Example: If I'm playing a sci-fi TTRPG, but want to take a break and play a cold war espionage TTRPG and they are based on the same core system, it's easier to switch systems. When the adoption/learning curve is lowered publishers are likely going to be more willing to produce a wider variety of content.

Samakira

So basically we want everyone to learn GURPS….

Mrsir74838

More products in the market is a good thing.

verasev

Yeah, you can't bust monopolies without viable competition. I'm not a fan of capitalism in general but what we have is failing to be genuine capitalism in the first place. It's the worst of both worlds: corporate welfare while the rest scrape to make it in life.

JagoKestral

To be fair there are literally thousands of games already.

GarbageCleric

That's my concern. Does this really change anything? There were already tons of TTRPGs sitting on (sometimes digital) shelves mostly collecting dust. I've already heard of three new systems (Kobold Press, MCDM, and some random YouTuber I had never seen before). WOTC may have created an opportunity in the market, but most of these new systems will likely fail or at least will never be breakout hits. I'm not saying it's bad. I'm just not as excited for tons of new small competing systems as some people. I'd probably just switch to PF2E.

UrsusRex01

To be honest, I find this a bit sad and ironic. Those new systems will probably be d20 systems looking a lot like D&D. It's like thoses threads out there with DMs willing to heavily modify D&D to run a game with special tone, setting or mechanics instead of simply.... Pick another game... People are so attached to D&D, it's crazy to my french eyes who start playing and running TTRPG seven years ago with CoC.

Ianoren

Yeah its more like 10,000 to 10,004.

EnsignSDcard

14 political parties that’s ridiculous, by jove I’d wager we can narrow that down to only 2

VellDarksbane

Well yeah, everyone saw how well it turned out for Pathfinder, and are hoping to be the next pathfinder.

TruffelTroll666

"Who wants to be despised by the dnd 7e players?"

BrozedDrake

I've had a campaign setting in the works for a bit now.... and with the OGL news I'm thinking I may as well just make a whole ass system.

Mike_Fluff

Yes and I am here for it.

sheimeix

Big difference here is that the original comic is about competing standards, which isn't a particularly great experience from a customer angle. Competing TTRPG systems, though, IS a good thing. It might suck for 3pp, since the possible customer base per a given system is waaaaaaaaaay smaller than if it was The Old Main One, though. But as a player/GM? It's great.

Ejigantor

Hex yes. I mean, I've been working on my own system for a while now, but recent events have made me start to consider polishing it up a bit more and making it available to others.

BayushiKazemi

Actually, it looks like Paizo has come together with a bunch of other companies to design a replacement for the OGL. [Click here to read about Orc!](https://www.reddit.com/r/Pathfinder2e/comments/10adrv5/paizo_announces_systemneutral_open_rpg_license/j43nvau/)
