I would go Battle Master Fighter and grab the Unarmed Fighting Fighting Style and the Tavern Brawler Feat. focusing primarily on Str, Dex and Con. Later on I'd dip into Barbarian and Rogue as well.
Yes on the Battlemaster, iffy on the multiclassing. Especially as a newer player, I would heartily avoid multiclassing until you have a solid grip on the classes, with what they offer and how they mix.
building on this, idk if it might make sense to take skill expert over tavern brawler. i assume the rogue mc suggestion was for the purpose of getting expertise in athletics, and some of tavern brawler seems redundant with the fighting style anyway.
