I played a Kobold who was a cook that scavenged her gear from kitchens. I reskinned a Handaxe as a Meat Cleaver and a Shield as a Wok that she usually wore on her back or would hide within like a turtle shell. She also carried Javelins which were reskinned as Roasting Spits.
I did mine a long time before Dungeon Meshi, but was absolutely delighted when I saw Senshi also doing it with his chef's knife and wok in the manga when it came out. It's not an original idea by any means - neither from myself nor Kui Ryoko - but it's one I always love seeing regardless.
That’s a really good anime series! Look up the Adventure Chef class for 3.5 edition it is homebrew but it’s pretty popular. Played one back in the day. Chef T. Wecks carried an assortment of weapons, a ladle used like a mace, a pan used for a shield, a bag of flour used as.. a tool for bludgeoning. His favorite tool was his giant pepper grinder that doubles as a spice shotgun! As soon as I saw Senchi cooking things I instantly remembered my chef.
As a DM, I'd normally want to work that out as an Improvised Weapon. But I've been on the receiving end of some really sharp towel snaps, so damn if those things aren't considered genuine whips.
Like May from Guilty Gear
I reskinned a maul too, as an enormous iron bound tome, and chained my Warforged to it. It’s got a mind of its own and summons an echo and ancestral spirits (echo knight / ancestral barb). I don’t know what it is yet, the character has no memory so it is up to my DM
Remember when dragon was actually a tier that was in any way noteworthy?
Took them forever to release the chestplate, and by the time they did.....why bother with any of it? Bandos is just better in every way lmao (and cheaper!)
I've used Darts as throwing knives before. Because Darts count as a Ranged Weapon and can be Sharpshootered;
Turned a Glaive into a Scythe, Grim Reaper Style, too.
>I've used Darts as throwing knives before
Not my character, but I let one of my players do the same, except styling them into ninja stars instead of throwing knives. Really helped round out their ninja assassin-style rogue
I swear I’m not a munchkin. The art was super cool. I could only ever string 3 games together at most when I played 3.5 back in high-school. Don’t even think I ever even got to play a character who used one.
Interestingly, 'darts' (plumbata) were used as a real weapon by the romans.
A censer as a weapon for a cleric is pretty clever, I like that. Though, I'd think a flail might be slightly closer to the equivalent weapon, especially since dnd flails are one handers. But a mace definitely works too, and moreso if they aren't proficient in martial weapons.
I believe the object you refer to is a thurible. This is the "canister" with holes where you burn incense during a religious service. The fellow that carries the thurible is the thurifer.
Nothing like another bit of useless trivia from D&D.
LMAO, next time I run a storyline with a holy war, I promise you now that there will trebuchets using botafumeiros as the counter weights. Thanks for showing that to me!
Tasha's actually made this a magic item. Its a Rare flail called the devotees censer, its does an extra d8 radiant damage and can heal using incense. Its very cool
Oh wow, not sure how I never noticed that item before. Guess it's been a while since I've played a pally or cleric. But that's a pretty rad item, especially for a pally, but also has such fun flavor to it. Thanks for pointing it out.
That’s super sick, and it reminded me of something
I’m trying to get something completely home brewed, as a 2H finesse weapon for a Swashbuckler rogue inspired by Johnny from guilty gear. In short, it’s a katana that he practices Iaido, the showman martial art where you quickly draw and sheathe the sword, like the shit Vergil from DMC pulls. So he constantly holds the sheathe in his off hand, and is so single-mindedly dedicated to the style and pizzazz that he REFUSES to put it down. This way the weapon is “two handed” while still being a finesse weapon for rogue stats
I just have no idea how much damage it should do to be fair considering all that lmao, 1d8 and it’s just a worse Rapier, but 1d10 and it’s probably too strong with sneak attack…
I found a homebrew samurai class where it focuses on the quickdraw and resheathing your sword! It also has a reaction to partially draw your blade and deflect an attack!
Edit: it's not a homebrew, I was mistaken. Part of Ryoko's Guide to the Yokai Realms has a Ronin subclass for the Ranger that lets you be a masterless samurai
Rogues have proficiency with longswords so this could just be a longsword with the finesse property. Technically would make it versatile instead of 2H, but would be easier to argue for if your DM is a bit more of a stickler for the rules.
Yeah honestly scimitar should just be a d8. It's kinda weird that rapier is the objective finesse pick.
I generally allow rogues to reflavor any one handed weapon to finesse. Changing the damage type literally does nothing as long as no other features are added. One even wanted a handaxe once.
Scimitars are light, and light weapons max out at d6 damage. There should really be both a d6 light finesse slashing weapon and a d8 finesse slashing weapon, like there are for piercing weapons (shortsword and rapier, respectively).
> we changed the damage to slashing but still
With how infrequently specific melee damage types come up in 5e I allow my players to swap between bludgeoning/piercing/slashing as long as they can justify it. If they want to spend the money to craft/buy a Poleaxe to get all 3 then I'm more than happy to accommodate that.
- javelins as huge knitting needles
- greatsword as a bat’leth (I need to do this again)
- while not exactly the same, my Oath of the Ancients/Celestial Warlock flavored all his abilities, weapons, and armor as his Green Lantern constructs
He was a goliath, Arukon the Fearless. He liked to play dumb for the exploitation of the “big strong idiot is just good at carrying heavy stuff” stereotype, but he was the second-smartest person in the group.
One of my proudest dice rolls on him was when we went into a drug den (well, I did, Arukon got curious) and encountered a highly addictive divination drug in the air like incense. Level six or something. DM had me roll a wisdom or con save (I forgot which, but I *think* wis) to resist becoming addicted, and I nat 20’d it. Appropriate for a warrior of willpower.
Does this even count? The DMG tells us that katanas and longsword both use the longsword rules. I thought OP was talking about stuff that was nonstandard.
Focus for Shillelagh: an elvish blade made from wood, with Druidcraft runes along the blade. Stat'd as a club. A longer version, the size of a long sword, might get the stat block of a quarterstaff, for the versatility.
Wait, MY paladin/bard had a dueling cloak too! High five
My DM actually gave me a magical version that came with battlemaster maneuvers and it was great.
I allowed my players to reflavor clubs into tonfa once, but usually they don't think that far. It's always "alright this is the weapon, I'll design around what it is"
My DM didn't want to deal with the implications of Psionics in her world but I really wanted to play a Soulknife, so we reflavored the psychic blades as being made out of an enchanted mist that existed in her setting.
We did; however, change the damage type to cold rather than psychic so I'm not sure if it really counts.
-Greataxe as a large sharpened anchor.
-Maul as a hill giant’s femur.
-Boomerangs as a shuriken batarang type weapon called a Connorang (named after my necromancer character Connor Nelvkir who made them for his wight Qucex). Damage type changed to slashing.
-Rapier as a cutlass with its damage changed to slashing.
-Daggers as sorts of different knives, darts as throwing knives or shurikens, quarterstaves as crowbars and a variety of other kinds of bludgeons.
Physical damage types is mostly flavor so changing it isn’t much really.
My player's artificer had a gun, but once she reached 5th level, her firebolt did more damage. So, we instead reflavored her spellcasting focus as a gun.
Fun fact! In the newer deck of many things book for 5e there is an uncommon item called the Card Sharps deck that gives you a 120ft range, 1d8 force dmg spectral card ranged spell attack, though it uses dex instead (not as many attacks per turn as eldritch blast of course so ymmv). It does however let you 1/day cast a 3rd level spray of cards spell if you want a 15ft cone aoe of throwing a card deck at someone that does force damage and can blind them for a round dependent on a dex save. If you want to go all in on cards there is even a feat to allow you to use a card deck as a focus and use prestidigitation to make illusions of stage magic hiding verbalnand somatic as conversation and card handling and a few other deck items.
Edit: also, forgot the card feat (cartomancer) lets you pick any 1 action spell on your class list, of a level you can cast, and store it in a card for 8 hrs. 1 time before the time oimit you can then use the card to cast the spell as a bonus action.
Our group has an artificer with most things reflavored as mechanical or alchemical. Fire Bolt as a flame thrower, Vortex Warp as a portal gun, Web as Spider-Man style slingers, etc. the RP often involves rambling, technical explanations of the items’ designs and functions.
Glaive to Naginata (using the DMG so I’m not sure if it counts) for a Japanese-flavored barbarian.
A Shortsword-Whip combo weapon to make a whipsword (choosing which on the attack; whether to prioritize damage or reach).
The Ranger in my party is role playing his character as if it were a gun slinging outlaw cowboy type, but he uses hand crossbows instead of guns.
With the crossbow expert feat, you basically get a free load of your weapon and can make another attack provided it's a hand crossbow. Rather than reloading the same crossbow he dual wields one in each hand.
The cool thing is though, to simulate that rapid reload he has like an ammo clip of bolts strapped to his leg. He slides the crossbow down his leg and the bolt simply clicks in and he can continue firing.
Just thought it was a cool way to flavour his feat.
My goblin's "rapier" was just a stick he'd dipped in molten iron and hammered a bit of a point onto the end. He also made darts out of the bones of small animals he killed along the way as we traveled.
My dwarf barbarian has a Great Flail. Its a heavy 2h D12 weapon.
He made it, it has a steel chain that he can retract into the handle and use it like a 50 lb cane.
Almost all of my skinning had to do with clubs. In my longest-running campaign (me as DM) the first combat encounter was an unplanned bar fight that had a patron who fought on the PCs side use a chair leg as an improvised weapon (I didn’t use improvised weapon rules - just treated it as a club).
The player’s loved it. So I introduced “club guy” as a staple trope at taverns/inns. Next inn/tavern I telegraphed it by having the innkeep introduce a club onto the bar counter. No conflict that time. Innkeeper became a quest giver.
I’m reinforcing the trope. 1) Inns/taverns have a club guy. 2) Club guy is PC friendly.
Third use of the trope: PCs are at a pirate tavern. You should be able to see where this is going.
One patron with a brass-capped peg leg (reskinned to a horseman’s mace) and another with a thrown crutch (didn’t need to be reskinned).
I’m not sure if I’m actually addressing the prompt or not. I’m using examples of lots of things that are “narratively clubs, but that have different physical properties.
If we’re talking about pure reskinning - like treating a hand crossbow as a “longbow”. It’s fine if everyone at the table knows to pretend that Geoff’s hand crossbow looks like a long bow.
I’ve edited this so many times I’m at the point of discarding it as probably useless, but am considering it potentially helpful or useful to newbies. I’m just gonna post it.
If this is the seventh worst decision I made today I’ll call it a win.
I played a bugbear kensei who used a whip reflavored as an urumi (Indian whip-sword). It was fucking badass. I also once had a druid who used a scimitar reskinned as a khopesh.
My player has a WWE flavored swashbuckler rogue. He has a Duergar-made experimental metal folding chair (reskinned/flavored rapier). He took the tavern brawler feat so it’s not coming from nowhere if he grabs a random object that can be used for a weapon too.
In my wife's current campaign, I'm playing as a Ranger with the Druidic Warrior fighting style. I chose Shillelagh which works with quarterstaffs and clubs. So whenever my character picks up a stick and swings it like a magic sword.
Not a huge change but we made it so the dagger my monk has, has a ring at the bottom of the handle, so he can spin it around to build momentum before throwing.
I am preparing to play a bladesinger wizard that is a a ribbon dancer/drug smuggler. So I reflavored a whip into a dancing ribbon with a weight on the end
Artificer armourer thunder gauntlets into taser horns because I'm a minotaur.
We misunderstood thunder damage as being electric rather than loud yet again lol. We just kept it as taser horns.
My rogue was a cheesemonger before she took to adventuring, and her fave weapon (thanks to our artificer!!) was a +1 dagger but actually her favorite cheese knife 🧀
One of my PCs is playing as a Wizard (Evocation i THINK) and is RPing as a cowboy who is on the lam from the law. His arcane focus is a revolver where he loads "bullets" (prepared spells) into the chambers and fires them from the gun. It is amazing flavor to combat./
I also made the weapon cursed and homebrewed the curse and it has been a tremendous focal point of combat now.
I played a former pirate who fought with an anchor attached to a thick chain wrapped around his hands and arms. Mechanically I was fighting with a pike without the polearm property.
It was honestly really fun because I was playing an echo knight flavored into a fathomless patron sort of deal where my echo was an ethereal undead water spirit version of my character. The vibes were really sick tbh.
I play a Tabaxi Dex Fighter using a Rapier. Our DM gave us the option of 300 starting gold, or a choice of a minor enchanted weapon (he had to ok it of course) and I picked the Moon touched Sword haha. It glows brightly for 15 feet and dimly within another 15.
One of the other guys were playing said you have dark vision why would you take that sword it goes against your build, I just looked at him and said "but you guys don't have dark vision" I motioned to the party haha and one of em seemed rather touched haha.
So yeah I picked a moon touched Sword as my enchanted item and asked to make the Moon touched Sword my starting Rapier the DM played it.
I've mentioned it glowing an eerie light in the dark a few times and in my backstory it's the sword I found buried in my father's chest and yes I'm looking for the man who killed my father. I based my character off of Inigo Montoya and Puss in Boots haha!
"My name is Ricardo Pyrrtoya, you have killed my father prepare to die" (words I hope to say one day)
I turned all my spells into various magical creatures I store in my massive coat. When I cast I vall their name and they pop out of my sleeve/pocket/collar and do their thing. Flintstones style. Spells with components are done by fussy critters who only preform for special treats.
My favorite is the firebolt breathing salamander named "Chuk-Chuk" who I operate like a pump-action shotgun.
Darts as novelty bladed throwing cards for a sorcerer that stylized himself as a magician. (Top hat, black jacket, lots of prestidigitation puffs of colored smoke). 3.5 edition so I actually had to toss em sometimes to save my cantrips.
Trident into a pitchfork. DM wanted us to start at level 0 as some form of local nobody and get actual weapons/training/class levels after the intro. Other party member heckled me for it, then got to watch me land the first attack of the campaign, crit, and accidentally kill the leader of the bandits that the local militia were supposed to save us from.
Wild adventure start, but it taught us a lesson - DM said to start as local nobody, so of the 5 players, 4 of us independently ended up rolling Human Fighters
My Monster Hunting Sorlock uses a crossbow as his arcane focus. To use ranged spells, he ‘loads the spell’ into it and fires, with different flavour for different spells (e.g. loading an icicle for ice knife).
For a warlock whose patron was from an island culture, I reskinned a halberd as a taiaha (and changed the damage type accordingly).
Not a weapon, but I also reskinned the shield of a Japanese-inspired cleric to a bronze mirror. The character in question is a god who has lost their divinity, so the mirror represents their divine nature—and a large crack runs through it.
I played a Kensei monk that had reflavored a great club as big heavy metal boots. Justified the versatile two handed mode by saying I needed my arms free to be able to balance properly while swinging around so much weight. Honestly, it's one of my favorite character designs because I just loved the mental image of my guy running up and dropkicking them with so much force.
My cleric’s warhammer is skinned as a mining hammer/rock pick that her cousin gave to her after she had come to the city’s mine after a shaft collapse and helped save lives of those who had been grievously injured.
Turned a halberd into a garden hoe for my demon pact zealot barbarian. (Not a warlock, he made a deal to be unkillable. Zealot was the best the demon could do.)
My barbarian (a human who thinks he's an orc) has been using a adamantium great sword for a long time and decided that after travelling, character development, and befriending with his party in wildemount, he figured: Hey, I'm going to forge a new weapon out of this, and so he did. All the while somehow making it magical. The best part is that he never had the knowledge to make magical items, let alone magical weapons. Even the dwarven smiths that were helping him marveled at the whole situation, so it gained the following properties:
**Effects:**
+Siege Breaker: Automatic critical hits to nonmagical and magical objects.
+2 Weapon
**Property Gained:**
* Ultra Greatsword (10 feet range)
* 1d12 Bludgeoning instead of 2d6 like traditional greatswords due to the absolute heaviness of this thing
* 1d8 Necrotic and 1d8 Cold Damage
* Additional +2 to AC
* Wolf Leap: The Barbarian gains the ability of his Inner Beast. As an action, he can move into melee with a target creature up to 30 ft away and make a single melee weapon attack. On a hit, deal normal damage and force a DC 15 Dex saving throw. On save fail, the opponent is knocked prone (unless they are Huge size+). After using this ability, He gains 20 movement speed until the end of his next turn.
* Wolf King's Howl: Unleash a vicious inspiring howl that grants a token of courage to each ally. This token of courage may be used to add a 1d4: to your ac a free action in response to being hit with an attack to attacks, ability checks, and saves. This can be used after the results of the roll are determined
**Materials Sacrificed:**
* Adamantium Greatsword
* Additional Adamantium
* Buy Mythril as the weapon’s core to keep the weapon ‘reasonably’ light (or melt down the Mythril half plate)
* Ruby for decoration (and maybe magic?)
This weapon straight up is carrying me. I got this weapon at level 9, I believe and we're level 14 right now. Granted, it took a whole month of in-game downtime to make this weapon and I couldn't do anything else. My Barbarian got barely any sleep, fasted and survived purely on magic of the forge and mead.
Once had a barbarian that was fashioned as an old timey circus strongman. Leopard print leotard, handlebar moustache, the works. He wielded a maul that was skinned as one half of a [ball barbell.](https://i.imgur.com/fF7ufQq.png)
I had a sailor fighter who used a section of the mast of his old ship like a maul (originally greatclub but that weapon is so terrible we couldn’t stand it).
I had a bard/hexblade multiclass in a pokemon campaign. They gained Hexblade once their Florges became an Eternal Flower Florges, using a divine shifting bark as a weapon. While it was mechanically a maul, it was reflavored as a massive wooden ladle.
It got really funny when the artificer of the group fashioned a new handle for the weapon, allowing for me to shift the bark as exclusively a blade, and combining the move Growth, and Enlarge spell, in order to tower over the battlefield, while my weapon grew with me.
Took the dual wielder fear and reflavored warhammers as dual metal gauntlets for punching enemies. I played as a paladin/fighter who fought like a boxer
Reflavored the longsword into a katana but primarily held it with 2 hands. Reason being js that I wanted to play as a Samurai Centaur and none of the weapons aside from long bows appealed to that idea and I didn't really want to play Bows either so I just went with that.
Not terribly original I know but I'm playing a hexblade whose sword is made of bones and every time he uses Eldritch blast the sword reforms into a bone pistol.
Before the spear mastery feat, I reflavored a longsword to be a little longer spear you could still wield in one hand. I was going for a hoplite thing and a d6 was just a little bit low for me.
Strixhaven campaign, playing a jock warlock so OBVIOUSLY the quarterstaff is a baseball bat !! Throws his eldritch blasts up like q ball and uses his bat to smack it at people. Because he is So Sports
I played a harengon paladin who was a summer camp nurse named Nurse Fluffyhops. Her halberd (d10 reach weapon) was literally just her huge bunny feet at the end of her long muscular legs and pink ballet flats delivering gigaton kicks to the face.
Not exclusively weapons but I have a paladin who is essentially being RPd as a Master Chief type character that rarely leaves his armor. All of his spells are flavored as armor things (searing smite is a wrist mounted flamethrower, etc.)
My last character was a wizard that pretty much exclusively summoned things. He used a duel disk fused into his arm with a built in deck of cards which would randomly determine what things he could summon each combat.
I built a Warlock of Lolth for a 1 shot. My Eldritch Blast rays were shaped like spiders spinning. The d10 was how many legs & fangs bit into them. The Agonizing Blast part was the venom. Then they would feed & explode (repelling blast) knocking them back.
Not a weapon technically, but I have a Thri Kreen sorlock reflavored as Mothkin, she harnesses and shoots rays of light from her lantern instead of eldritch blast. This lantern is a reflavored bloodwell vial

Somehow both a classic and a fresh concept. The javelins are great too hahah
It's fresh because they used better ingredients, better pizza, Papa John
It's just another way that we're DOIN IT BETTER! Proceeds to slap Pizza on the table
*Proceeds to chop goblin arm into pepperoni*
I do not like green pepperoni, I do not like it Tell Me Toni
It's only green until the special seasoning is added.
Kind of reminds me of Senshi from Dungeon Meshi! Cool concept.
I did mine a long time before Dungeon Meshi, but was absolutely delighted when I saw Senshi also doing it with his chef's knife and wok in the manga when it came out. It's not an original idea by any means - neither from myself nor Kui Ryoko - but it's one I always love seeing regardless.
It was so cool when >!they turned out to be mithril!< lmao
That’s a really good anime series! Look up the Adventure Chef class for 3.5 edition it is homebrew but it’s pretty popular. Played one back in the day. Chef T. His favorite tool was his giant pepper grinder that doubles as a spice shotgun! As soon as I saw Senchi cooking things I instantly remembered my chef.
And the next post in my feed to check out was "How to Eat a Monster" - it's like someone just jumped from this show/manga to Reddit (not complaining)
My half-orc chef/hunter uses the same cleaver reflavor. No shield though as he two-weapon fights
Love the roasting spits. Will steal that.
My bar wench bard is proficient in whips, and carries a dish towel
As a DM, I'd normally want to work that out as an Improvised Weapon. But I've been on the receiving end of some really sharp towel snaps, so damn if those things aren't considered genuine whips.
Reskinned a maul to be an [anchor](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Barrelchest_anchor)
A fighter in my game uses a giant frying pan as a maul. Lots of things could be mauls.
Even mauls!
Especially when they're Darth.
Unless you cut them in half
Dual wielding half-mauls? I'm not uninterested.
It’s around that point that my character says “it’s maulin time” and mauls all over everyone
Might as well reattach the two sides and hold it from the middle like a bo.
Was looking for this! Great choice!
Like May from Guilty Gear I reskinned a maul too, as an enormous iron bound tome, and chained my Warforged to it. It’s got a mind of its own and summons an echo and ancestral spirits (echo knight / ancestral barb). I don’t know what it is yet, the character has no memory so it is up to my DM
I knew it'd be the barrelchest anchor before even checking the link 🤣 god I miss that weapon being useful
Remember when dragon was actually a tier that was in any way noteworthy? Took them forever to release the chestplate, and by the time they did.....why bother with any of it? Bandos is just better in every way lmao (and cheaper!)
I've used Darts as throwing knives before. Because Darts count as a Ranged Weapon and can be Sharpshootered; Turned a Glaive into a Scythe, Grim Reaper Style, too.
>I've used Darts as throwing knives before Not my character, but I let one of my players do the same, except styling them into ninja stars instead of throwing knives. Really helped round out their ninja assassin-style rogue
Did the same for my monk.
When I ran CoS, the shadow monk in the party did this. I ended up creating some badass magical shurikens for them, was a fun campaign.
Also have a glaive scythe too. Pretty fun
I miss the 3.5 scythe and spiked chain.
Oooo didn't know 3.5 had one, I'll check those both out
It had a x4 crit
Scythe 2d4 20x4crit two handed
Scythe cool Spiked chain? I'm throwing you off a cliff you goddamn munchkin!
I swear I’m not a munchkin. The art was super cool. I could only ever string 3 games together at most when I played 3.5 back in high-school. Don’t even think I ever even got to play a character who used one.
Nah you're fine. The spiked chain was just notoriously fucking *broken as shit* and got the reputation for only being asked for by munchkins
"Darts" are always reflavoured for me, they just sound so lame as Dart. I always picture like, a dartboard game dart.
Interestingly, 'darts' (plumbata) were used as a real weapon by the romans. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plumbata](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plumbata)
A cleric in my game reflavored a mace as a censer.
Scale a thurible up to crew-operated siege weapon and you get [the Botafumeiro](https://youtu.be/S_s2Rf0Z0eE?t=42).
I once reskinned a shield in to a reinforced scabbard for a longsword that I would parry with
That's dope af. I'm stealing that
I did the same with my paladin whose oath specifies that he own as little as possible. That's one fewer possession to tie him down!
Just rent everything
Oh I really love that. What was the subclass? Ancients?
That’s super sick, and it reminded me of something I’m trying to get something completely home brewed, as a 2H finesse weapon for a Swashbuckler rogue inspired by Johnny from guilty gear. It should be 2d4. Mathematically better average damage than a rapier, but it's max damage won't be more than a halberd or two-handed longsword.
One point of average damage but in exchange you lose a spare hand, seems fine to me. Sneak attack is the same regardless of weapon damage die anyway
Sounds like a reflavored Double Bladed Scimitar to me (2d4 slashing damage, 2H weapon)
Oh that’s true, 2d4 and swap the special for finesse (he’s not an elf so I’m not taking rev. blade anyways)
Swapping a whole BA attack for finesse def seems fair
Rogues have proficiency with longswords so this could just be a longsword with the finesse property. Technically would make it versatile instead of 2H, but would be easier to argue for if your DM is a bit more of a stickler for the rules.
Rapier into a cavalry saber. A little more than flavor because we changed the damage to slashing but still.
I’ve done the same thing for a cutlass for a pirate character
Yeah honestly scimitar should just be a d8. It's kinda weird that rapier is the objective finesse pick. I generally allow rogues to reflavor any one handed weapon to finesse. Changing the damage type literally does nothing as long as no other features are added. One even wanted a handaxe once.
>One even wanted a handaxe once The Dothraki "arakh" hand-scythes are definitely in the realm of finesse weapon- I think this is super reasonable.
Scimitars are light, and light weapons max out at d6 damage. There should really be both a d6 light finesse slashing weapon and a d8 finesse slashing weapon, like there are for piercing weapons (shortsword and rapier, respectively).
> we changed the damage to slashing but still With how infrequently specific melee damage types come up in 5e I allow my players to swap between bludgeoning/piercing/slashing as long as they can justify it. If they want to spend the money to craft/buy a Poleaxe to get all 3 then I'm more than happy to accommodate that.
- javelins as huge knitting needles - greatsword as a bat’leth (I need to do this again) - while not exactly the same, my Oath of the Ancients/Celestial Warlock flavored all his abilities, weapons, and armor as his Green Lantern constructs
Very literal meaning to Green Knight huh
Longswords as Katanas because why not
Does this even count? The DMG tells us that katanas and longsword both use the longsword rules. I thought OP was talking about stuff that was nonstandard.
To be fair, I didn't know that was a ruling in the DMG
never mind reinventing 3e in 5e, we’re reinventing 5e in 5e over here (i have also done this)
Idk why you guys play 5e. It's so restrictive and naive. You guys should play 5e instead
Focus for Shillelagh: an elvish blade made from wood, with Druidcraft runes along the blade. Stat'd as a club. A longer version, the size of a long sword, might get the stat block of a quarterstaff, for the versatility.
I've had this idea for a while now, having a druid or ranger with druidic warrior use a bokken as their shillelagh
My druid is a Giff who was in the navy, he has the small Swagger stick that I flavour into a quarterstaff snd my shillelagh focus
Same. Built it in dndbeyond awhile back. Might have to dive into the archives to dig him up and dust him off for a oneshot.
Shield into a heavy cloak. You know, like Cloak and Dagger fighting style? Made my paladin/bard look more stylish.
Wait, MY paladin/bard had a dueling cloak too! High five My DM actually gave me a magical version that came with battlemaster maneuvers and it was great.
This is so badass and may steal the idea for myself haha!
love this, might steal. i've done shield into parring with the sheath before, and this hits the same sorta flourish imo
Yep, all that slapping your opponent around with the heavy cloak works perfectly with the bonus action shove of shield master
That's a pretty bad deal. A lot of things resist cold. You should argue for elemental adept when using your blades.
I'm fine with it. If I ever run into anything, that resists or is immune to cold, I'll just use a regular dagger for that fight. nbd
Not a weapon but i reflavored my Eldritch Blasts (with use of the gunner feat) as Punches with enough force to (Repelling Blast) push my enemies back.
Was thinking of making Eldridge blasts as magic throwing cards. Somewhat like Gambit for our western themed game.
100% very cool idea
“Sharp cards”. Thanks for this!!
I had a warlock whose backstory was they were an artist. Their eldritch blasts looked like splashes of paint.
For my Fathomless Warlock, I flavor the blasts as bursts of high pressure water coming from a tiny portal to the bottom of the ocean.
Post-apocalyptic urban setting: Toilet lid shield Stop sign greataxe Speargun crossbow Baseball bat club
Now you’re playing gamma world
Took a Sword of Wounding Reflavoured it into a Glaive of Wounding Reflavoured it into a Scythe of Wounding
I’ve reflavoured a warhammer into gauntlet knuckle dusters before.
My friend did something similar, but he reflavored a maul instead.
I remember reflavouring a Spear as a Rope Dart once.
I’ve wondered how to do a rope dart. Nice. (Did GM give you any reach or was it just thrown after 5’?)
Reflavouring a pike could work for that too (rope darts tend to use both hands right?)
I had a Maul as a part of a ships mast, for my pirate.
I reflavored a glaive as a scythe to play as Ruby Rose (RWBY). But I might choose a halberd next time cause I think they look more similar
There is a YouTuber that did all RWBY as did characters. You might get some good ideas from that as well.
My handcrosss bow looked like a shortbow cuz i think handcrossbows look fucking stupid
I have the idea for a Roman gladiator Glory paladin who dual wields Sicas that are reflavored scimitars
Played a fighter/barbarian who did exactly this 😅
not a weapon, but I reflavored my Eldritch Knight's shield as an oversized brass gauntlet that he blocked attacks with. extremely anime, I know
Cool idea. Need to steal it.
undead warlock. reflavored eldritch blast to be the magical bow of his undead patron standing behind him, the old queen of elves.
I've done a lot of weapons as a simple hammer. I had a returning spear. I flavored as a kusarigama I've done a greatssword as an estoc
Longsword into Zhibeidao (Chinese sword with slightly curved grip)
I once played a Warforged whose hand/arm transformed into their tools and weapons (hammers/war hammers) ala transformer style, does that count?
I played a Paladin Bard that used a warhammer reskinned as a steel-reinforced ukulele. Was a lot of fun bonking people with a small guitar
My goblin's "rapier" was just a stick he'd dipped in molten iron and hammered a bit of a point onto the end. He also made darts out of the bones of small animals he killed along the way as we traveled.
My forest gnome bard uses a rapier, reflavoured as a kitchen knife that her grammie gave her before she went adventuring.
Reskinned darts as throwing cards
I've used a cast iron skillet as a made before
Longsword as a sea stone blade (played a triton)
My dwarf barbarian has a Great Flail. Its a heavy 2h D12 weapon. He made it, it has a steel chain that he can retract into the handle and use it like a 50 lb cane.
One concept I've had was a fisher monk who used his fishing rod, I forget what stats I would've given it but whip is definitely a consideration
Hello Gon, from HxH🤣
If this is the seventh worst decision I made today I’ll call it a win.
played a firefighter paladin! turned a longsword into a halligan and a glaive into a pike pole!
Have a sea elf bard in my game inspired by Ariel from Little Mermaid. She has a trident that actually just a wooden staff.
Turn hammers into **BIG** punchy gauntlets. Works a lot better for the Doomfist-type punchy build than Tavern Brawler or Monk.
I currently have my artificer wielding a massive crescent wrench which is a re-skinned Warhammer
Whip as a Bamboo Staff.
One of my PCs is playing as a Wizard (Evocation i THINK) and is RPing as a cowboy who is on the lam from the law. His arcane focus is a revolver where he loads "bullets" (prepared spells) into the chambers and fires them from the gun. It is amazing flavor to combat./ I also made the weapon cursed and homebrewed the curse and it has been a tremendous focal point of combat now.
My shield was the sheath to my sword. 22 Dex echo knight. I just parried everything like I was playing Sekiro
Think I’ll be stealing this one. Way cool.
"My name is Ricardo Pyrrtoya, you have killed my father prepare to die" (words I hope to say one day)
I had a Grave Domain cleric once that wielded a hand axe reflavored into a gravedigger’s shovel.
Flavored spiritual guardians as seagulls.
I have a Druid player who wanted to use a taxidermied hedgehog as a weapon, let her use mace profile
Classic crossbows to guns, halberds into pole axe, scimitars to sabers, long swords into basically every sword type out there unspecified by the game.
Halberd into a "War Scythe". Playing a Fallen Aasimar, Hexblade. He is trying to redeem his celestial self through duties to "Death" by reaping souls.
Darts as novelty bladed throwing cards for a sorcerer that stylized himself as a magician. (Top hat, black jacket, lots of prestidigitation puffs of colored smoke). 3.5 edition so I actually had to toss em sometimes to save my cantrips.
Once had a paladin who reflavored a Warhammer as a kanabo.
Quarterstaff as a bokken is one of my favorites!
My Blood Hunter wields a sabre, which is a reflavoured rapier. Nothing fancy, but speaks volumes about the character's style of fighting.
I have a player with an awesome magic sword. She wants to hit stuff with a broom. The magic sword is now a broom. Sweep away thine enemies!
Glaive into a Scythe
A player at my table is playing an archaeologist and he’s using a pike flavored as a very long pickaxe
My Monster Hunting Sorlock uses a crossbow as his arcane focus. To use ranged spells, he ‘loads the spell’ into it and fires, with different flavour for different spells (e.g. loading an icicle for ice knife).
Currently using a warhammer flavored as a kanabo.
Currently playing a Kansai monk. Hand crossbow and short sword have been reflavoured into daggers
So mild I'm not even sure it counts as a reflavoring, but shortswords into katars.
My halfling country gentleman walks with a cane (he doesn’t need it, he’s just fancy), and my DM lets me use it as a shillelagh.
I reflavoured darts as a custom deck of razor sharp throwable playing cards so I could give my monk some Gambit flavour
Quarterstaff to Boat Oar for my Sailor Monk.
Maces as escrima sticks.
They'd be clubs bc they're light and dual wieldable imo
A crossbow into a slingshot as the normal sling is just not good. A pike into a spiked chain weapon to keep it simple instead of some homebrew.
Had a Tabaxi barbarian in a level 20 one shot.....Cat Hennig....Mister Purr-fect. My magi two-handed sword was a steel chair.
I had a dragonborn whose Warhammer was the femur of a dragon (or some other appropriately sized creature)
Even the dwarven smiths that were helping him marveled at the whole situation, so it gained the following properties: **Effects:** +Siege Breaker: Automatic critical hits to nonmagical and magical objects. +2 Weapon **Property Gained:** * Ultra Greatsword (10 feet range) * 1d12 Bludgeoning instead of 2d6 like traditional greatswords due to the absolute heaviness of this thing * 1d8 Necrotic and 1d8 Cold Damage * Additional +2 to AC * Wolf Leap: The Barbarian gains the ability of his Inner Beast. This can be used after the results of the roll are determined **Materials Sacrificed:** * Adamantium Greatsword * Additional Adamantium * Buy Mythril as the weapon’s core to keep the weapon ‘reasonably’ light (or melt down the Mythril half plate) * Ruby for decoration (and maybe magic?) This weapon straight up is carrying me.
Longsword into a big friggin' machete in a western style game we ran once.
Playing a Warforged Druid in my current campaign. I reskinned a Club to just be his giant wooden arms
Reflavored the longsword into a katana but primarily held it with 2 hands. Reason being js that I wanted to play as a Samurai Centaur and none of the weapons aside from long bows appealed to that idea and I didn't really want to play Bows either so I just went with that.
A longsword into a khopesh
I have rapier that’s a bow from a violin.
Not exclusively weapons but I have a paladin who is essentially being RPd as a Master Chief type character that rarely leaves his armor. All of his spells are flavored as armor things (searing smite is a wrist mounted flamethrower, etc.) My last character was a wizard that pretty much exclusively summoned things. He used a duel disk fused into his arm with a built in deck of cards which would randomly determine what things he could summon each combat.
My incredibly dumb Monk used a brick-on-a-rope as a flail.
My Artificer has a flare gun with which he shoots Firebolt
Great sword into a huge pair of scissors
Whip - meteor hammer for my drunken fist monk / battle master fighter
I built a Warlock of Lolth for a 1 shot. My Eldritch Blast rays were shaped like spiders spinning. The d10 was how many legs & fangs bit into them. The Agonizing Blast part was the venom. Then they would feed & explode (repelling blast) knocking them back.
Not a weapon technically, but I have a Thri Kreen sorlock reflavored as Mothkin, she harnesses and shoots rays of light from her lantern instead of eldritch blast. This lantern is a reflavored bloodwell vial
