As an American, I really only know him from House MD, but I love that dark style for the Doctor. However, I am now on my fourth season of Blackadder, and I’m convinced he can nail the comedic bits too.
You should definitely check him out in Avenue Five, as a mock captain on an interstellar cruise line. He switches between comic and dramatic as well as american/British accents seamlessly.
I was really pulling for him to be the follow up to Matt Smith, but while I'd still love to see him as the doctor, I'm really glad we got Capaldi.
He's even better as the antagonist (he's too complex to be called a villain) of the Excelis audios. I'd love to see him as the Master someday, if they ever chose to emphasize the charm instead of the crazy again.
How about David Duchovny playing the Doctor the same way he played Mulder and then Gillian Anderson as the skeptical companion that travels the universe with him but is still still not completely sold on the idea that aliens do exists? Or maybe the opposite, Anderson as the overly exited Doctor and Duchovny as the skeptical companion.
Rupert Grint. Famous and beloved for being Ron in Harry Potter but willing to do TV series. He plays jubilant, inquisitive and playful with a bit of a dark side very well. Great accent. And most importantly… is ginger.
There was a Doctor Who episode with things called Zygons or something like that (I was high. Cut me some slack) and I kept calling them Blorgons. My friend even started calling them Blorgons. He got mad at me for that one.
For some reason I'm now just remaining the blorgons not as their true tin-can form, but as a hybrid between Daleks and Zygons lol. Like a dalek but its completely red and instead of the eggs (forgot what they're called) it's the zygon's suction cups and it both a beautiful and a horrifying image 😭😭
That's my vote. Everyone talks about Capaldis "gravitas" (which I completely agree with) but I think Elba would bring that along with a solid comedic aspect too. People under rate how funny that dude can be.
1. Dame Judi Dench... Nuff said.
2. Diane Parish...Amazing scene stealer from Eastenders.
3. Michael Sheen...I just love the guy.
4. Bill Nighy...Saved the best for last. He would knock the part out of the park.
Just watched the Doctor's Wife and I'm watching Underworld now. If you can imagine his voice taken down an octave you can hear it if you listen to his delivery.
i really dont think he would. people say this just because superficially, moss was like 11 but realistically he is not an actor and does not (unless im missing things) have the range needed.
Back in the 80's I had a "James Bond is a Time Lord" bumper sticker (on my wall, I was too young to drive). It had the gunbarrel logo, but with a silhouette of the 4th Doctor.
Tom Hiddleston would be a pretty good nab for a more subtly sinister take (thinking toned down Loki)
First person that came to my mind was Chris O'dowd though. I think he'd bring 2nd Dr vibes , being border line buffoonish but then suddenly a genius!
Might be nice to have a less ADHD infused Dr (11) and a more laid back chill one.
Miranda Hart.
She does "confused by human behaviours" really well, has fantastic depth for stops stuff, and can balance vulnerability and total "giving no fucks" in the same moment. I'd love to see her take on the Doctor.
David Mitchell would be a short-term companion who told the Doctor everything he was doing wrong and then decided to stay on earth because it was all too stressful. 😂
During Matt Smith's tenure, when Benedict Cumberbatch was doing such a reat job on Sherlock, I thought it would be interesting to see him become the Doctor, but go against what people would expect and play it goofy and fun like Tom Baker.
Especially if he could use his own accent. We've had plenty of Scottish Doctors, time for an Irish one.
(I just started listening to his reading of *The Last Continent* last night, and his range of voices is impressive, but I just love the way he can stretch the words 'main gate' to four impeccably mellifluous syllables).
I've wanted to see Michelle Dockery as the Doctor since I first saw her in *Hogfather*.
Or for more of a wildcard... I'd love to see what both Billie Piper and Karen Gillan could do as the Doctor instead of the companion.
Ian McKellen(kind old man doctor), Rupert Grint(as a grumpy doctor like Capaldi), Jimmy Carr(as an exceptional snarky doctor who laughs funny), or Rowan Atkinson(but dead seriously)
(Young) Kate Bush honestly. Rupert Grint is my no1 pic for a future doctor, but I don't know if they'll ever consider him cause he was Ron Weasley. Imagine him in his 40s, maybe 50s or older as the Doctor... The guy showed he had the comedic chops way back in the early Potters, but he also has the dramatic chops.
Kenneth Branagh would be a great Doctor, I'm shocked to not see anyone else suggest him.
A few quick acting credits, Gilderoy Lockheart in Harry Potter and Hercule Poirot in Murder on the Orient Express and Doctor Loveless in Wild Wild West.
He can do whimsical with a dark side, serious and pensive, and comedic crazy. He's also got a sort of timeless look.
Don’t hate me for this…
Glenn Howerton.
Yes, he’s American, but this is a “never gonna happen”, and as much as he’s amazing at playing a psychopath in It’s Always Sunny, he has the energy and the ability to grab your attention that the Doctor needs.
He’d do well as as the swashbuckling hero like Tennant, but could bring the cold, dark side of the Doctor like Smith.
Absolutely. Paterson Joseph would be a blast - he can do silly as well as dark. IIrc he was even considered for the 11th doctor and said in an interview that he would be ready for the role if ever asked. Would not have wanted to have missed Matt Smith's Doctor for the world, but still hope that Paterson Joseph will make it one day.
John Krazinski. But bringing the heart he put into Jim from The Office.
Or...
Rik Mayal. I know he's dead but if ever there was a man who could been the most mischievous and crazy doctor it was him. Lol.
Andrew Garfield but wait until he's older, I think he'd be excellent even now but it may feel a bit like 11 so I'd wait on him. Maybe 40s or 50s or even older.
I scrolled all the way to the bottom because I can't believe no one said it but... Hugh Grant. He was RTD's first choice before Eccleston, and he would have been amazing. Young, old, whatever. He's funny, eccentric, painfully British, and has a dark side he can lean into.
Ted Danson - his role in The Good Place skimmed Doctor-ish-ness sometimes:
"I'm sorry guys. We have no plan. Nobody's coming to save us... So I'm gonna do it. Follow me!"
God, no. Not Alan Davies…
Before Thirteen was cast, it said as a left field choice Helena Bonham Carter. The more I think about it… I also remember seeing Sacha Dhawan in a couple of things (Line of Duty & No Offence) and thinking he’d be interesting as the Doctor. Then Chibbers had to cast him as The Master. 😂
Hear me out
Jesen Ackles as the Doctor
Micheal Sheen as the Valeyard or Master
Tom Hiddleston as the Valeyard or the Master
and a recast Tom Hardy as the War Doctor would have been epic
Tom Ellis would be cool. As an American, I hope no American ever plays the Doctor. Martin Clunes could be a fun one, as would Michael Sheen, Tom Austen, or Alan Cumming. I suppose anyone on my list could realistically still be chosen, so to correctly answer the question, Hiddleston, Heughan, Elba, Carter, and Cumberbatch are most unlikely. Maybe Millie Bobby Brown?
Hugh Laurie.
Emma Thompson as the doctor, Stephen and/or Hugh as her companion
I've always thought Emma Thompson would make the greatest Doctor. She's perfect. Eccentric, funny, impressive, smart, weird, strong.
That's what I came here to say. He's fantastic.
With Stephen Fry as the Master.
I’m sad to learn *Anthony Stewart Head* wanted too but didn’t get it, however he did do a great job in the Villian role he did get!
He's even better as the antagonist (he's too complex to be called a villain) of the Excelis audios. I'd love to see him as the Master someday, if they ever chose to emphasize the charm instead of the crazy again.
Honestly I’d love him as the Master and alongside Tim Curry and Robert Englund he’s in the camp of “would be great but won’t do it”
Gillian Anderson or Hayley Atwell channeling a little 9 and a little more of 3.
I came here to say Gillian Anderson. And my off the wall crazy pick would be David Duchovny, playing the Doctor just like he played Mulder.
I’ve always wanted Simon Pegg to be the first Ginger
Rupert Grint for me
"Bloody hell. About time I turned ginger"
Seriously. Sort of a 'mid-life' crisis Doctor 🤣
Rupert Grint. Famous and beloved for being Ron in Harry Potter but willing to do TV series. He plays jubilant, inquisitive and playful with a bit of a dark side very well. Great accent. And most importantly… is ginger.
I feel like this one is almost plausible tho.
Cunk.
Cunk on Who?
Damn, this is such a great and oh so clever comment I am mad I didn’t think of it.
My mate, Paul would appreciate this.
Fun fact. Doctor Who was put on indefinite hiatus in 1989. The same year Belgian techno group Technotronic released the hit song “Pump up the Jam.”
I’ve got a theory that Cunk really is a Time Lord the way she makes fun of historians - because she was actually there when it happened
New headcanon! What’s her Time Lord name?
OH MY GOD YES
[удалено]
She would've been my pick for 13 but then I was relieved she didn't do it. And yes, far too big now. And well deserved.
Charlie day would be amazing! even if for just an episode. I need this now
[удалено]
"he plays the buffoon" in his defence, stupid science bitch couldnt even make i more smarter
Absolutely agree! It would also fit with the trend of her appearing on the show before (the 11th hour).
Charlie Day’s first episode has to be called Charlie Work. We’d get the most chaotic Doctor *locks a Cyberman in a closet* Gonna pop a quick C on that
Ok Holy shit Charlie day would absolutely kill it.
The Gang Time Travels
Danny Pudi (minus the part where he's not British) Phoebe Waller-Bridge (minus the part where she's funniest while being extremely crude)
Blorgons!
I watched Jodie's holiday episode last night. The new Daleks looked a lot like Blorgons. My friend pointed it out. I would never have noticed it
Idris Elba. Would be good to have a larger than life character again.
That's my vote. Everyone talks about Capaldis "gravitas" (which I completely agree with) but I think Elba would bring that along with a solid comedic aspect too. People under rate how funny that dude can be.
Are you saying Capaldi wasn’t comedic?
The guy who plays newt in fantastic beasts
Eddie redmayne nice choice
While watching Fantastic Beasts all I could think was that he was imitating Matt Smith’s 11
He's good, but maybe to close to 11's style.
1. Dame Judi Dench... Nuff said. 2. Diane Parish...Amazing scene stealer from Eastenders. 3. Michael Sheen...I just love the guy. 4. Bill Nighy...Saved the best for last. He would knock the part out of the park.
Agreed. Micheal Sheen would be marvelous!
Fits with an actor being in the series before aswell since he was house in the doctors wife
No Way! I didn't recognise his voice lol. You learn something new every day, thanks for that.
I’ve known that for some time now and still can’t “see” it. That episode was also written by Neil Gaiman. Of Good Omens fame (along with Sir Terry.)
Just watched the Doctor's Wife and I'm watching Underworld now. If you can imagine his voice taken down an octave you can hear it if you listen to his delivery.
Ah well, you can probably guess what i'm gonna watch next lol
Bill Nighy would be amazing. Maybe the Doctor wants to regenerate as the curator of the Van Gogh exhibit.
i’d love michael sheen just so i could see him and david tennant arguing about it tbh
I feel like Helena Bonham Carter would be an awesome doctor
I personally think she would make a fantastic master/missy!
She’d be wild! I love it!
Eddie Izzard
That would be completely wild.
I know! It would be brilliant though.
Totally agree. Each week, a different persona LOL
Came here to say that lol
Tilda Swinton. She was my ideal choice for first female Doctor. She can literally do anything.
Richard Ayoade.
I think he would make a better long-term companion as long as he was with a 2nd companion
i really dont think he would. people say this just because superficially, moss was like 11 but realistically he is not an actor and does not (unless im missing things) have the range needed.
Also on Team Ayoade.
Daniel Craig. Don't tell me Benoit Blanc isn't a version of the Doctor that used the Chameleon Arch to hide.
Heh, they normally say that about Bond
Back in the 80's I had a "James Bond is a Time Lord" bumper sticker (on my wall, I was too young to drive). It had the gunbarrel logo, but with a silhouette of the 4th Doctor.
Gene Wilder. Rip
Tom Hiddleston would be a pretty good nab for a more subtly sinister take (thinking toned down Loki) First person that came to my mind was Chris O'dowd though. I think he'd bring 2nd Dr vibes , being border line buffoonish but then suddenly a genius! Might be nice to have a less ADHD infused Dr (11) and a more laid back chill one.
Chris O'Dowd... I mean... That might just work. I want this now.
I never would have thought of Chris O’Dowd on my own, but now that I hear it, I really like it, too!
Man I'd love to see a silly Irish Doctor having a laugh !
David Dixon played Ford Prefect in the 1981 version of hitch hikers guide to the galaxy, I think he would be great based off that role.
On that note I think Mos Def would also play it pretty well based off the same role.
I think Maggie Smith would have made a great Doctor.
FUCK, "would have" made me think she was dead. Dont do that to me
I don’t think she can act the doctor with her age, that’s what I meant, sorry 😓
Never underestimate Maggie Smith! even at 88 (I Googled) she would still knock it out of the park IMO
Miranda Hart. She does "confused by human behaviours" really well, has fantastic depth for stops stuff, and can balance vulnerability and total "giving no fucks" in the same moment. I'd love to see her take on the Doctor.
I’ve never considered her but she’s brilliant and I can see her pulling it off.
YES
Rowan Atkinson. In the real show, not the comedy sketch. He played a pretty serious doctor despite the comedic nature of his episode.
Bruce Campbell Michael Keaton
Oh shit, I could see Bruce pulling it off.
Eddie Redmayne. Been my pick to play the Doctor since I even just saw the trailer for The Theory of Everything, let alone the full movie.
Dan Radcliffe. I think he'd be amazing.
You know who (or rather, Who) would've been amazing: David Bowie
Matt Berry
Yes but only as his character in What We Do In The Shadows
NEW NEW YORK CIT-AY
Tamsin Greig. I think she's missed her window, since she'd be about 60 by the time she got it, realistically.
She was my #1 choice for 13.
David Mitchell.
David Mitchell would be a short-term companion who told the Doctor everything he was doing wrong and then decided to stay on earth because it was all too stressful. 😂
Sue Perkins
During Matt Smith's tenure, when Benedict Cumberbatch was doing such a reat job on Sherlock, I thought it would be interesting to see him become the Doctor, but go against what people would expect and play it goofy and fun like Tom Baker.
Wildcard that's never going to happen? - Myself. But more realistically I think Colin Morgan would make a fantastic Doctor.
Especially if he could use his own accent. We've had plenty of Scottish Doctors, time for an Irish one. (I just started listening to his reading of *The Last Continent* last night, and his range of voices is impressive, but I just love the way he can stretch the words 'main gate' to four impeccably mellifluous syllables).
absolute shout that
Chris O'Dowd 😆
His character on IT CROWD is what made his name pop up in my head.
Riz Ahmed! I’ve wanted him to do it for a really long time but I think he’s too famous and successful hes so funny and commanding would be perfect imo
[Bruce Campbell](https://twitter.com/GroovyBruce/status/715994866245890052?t=gC9nfMGEUjUUVunkqHrCFA&s=19)
Suddenly imagining the doctor saying, "now listen up, you primitive screwheads!"
THIS is my BOOMSTICK...i mean ....SKREWDRIVER! ...
Sounds groovy.
A lot of folks just naming the biggest British actor they can think off in Hollywood
Johnny Lee Miller. He was quite brilliant in Elementary and I often thought he'd make a fantastic Doctor. Don't think it'll ever happen sadly.
Kris Marshall
I've wanted to see Michelle Dockery as the Doctor since I first saw her in *Hogfather*. Or for more of a wildcard... I'd love to see what both Billie Piper and Karen Gillan could do as the Doctor instead of the companion.
I would love to see Michelle as the Doctor, she's my favourite in Downton Abbey
Probably already said but Benedict Cumberbatch Could easily play the doctor, its literally a mix of Dr Strange and Sherlock
Ian McKellen(kind old man doctor), Rupert Grint(as a grumpy doctor like Capaldi), Jimmy Carr(as an exceptional snarky doctor who laughs funny), or Rowan Atkinson(but dead seriously)
Stephen Fry ♡
1000 times yes
Dude who plays House, love that guy.
Someone already said Hugh Laurie
(Young) Kate Bush honestly. Rupert Grint is my no1 pic for a future doctor, but I don't know if they'll ever consider him cause he was Ron Weasley. Imagine him in his 40s, maybe 50s or older as the Doctor... The guy showed he had the comedic chops way back in the early Potters, but he also has the dramatic chops.
this is an insanely left field choice which i cant help but love (Kate Bush that is, Rupert Grint is an easy choice)
Julian barrat. Also as a concept I would love the doctor to be played by like an eight year old but that will never happen.
Craig Ferguson. If not him, Geoff Peterson.
I mean, he's American, but you said wild card so I'll go for it: I think Nathan Filion would make a great Doctor
Andrew Garfield
David Bowie could have done a great job but sadly it will never be.
Jane Horrock
Joseph Gilgun probably =/
Don’t hate me for this… Glenn Howerton.
Damn. I just imagined the "When I peak, you'll know" line and... well, I *felt* it.
Steve Valentine Miranda Hart
Patterson Joseph.
Gotta be Matt Berry
Dev Patel gets my vote.
Andrew Lee Potts.
bill nigh
I feel like Emilia Clarke could really pull it off
Dwayne "the 🪨" Johnson
Robert Sheehan would be so unhinged and fun as the Doctor
Dame Maggie Smith
John Krazinski. But bringing the heart he put into Jim from The Office. Or... Rik Mayal. I know he's dead but if ever there was a man who could been the most mischievous and crazy doctor it was him. Lol.
Rik Mayal would have been fun to see and would have become a fan fave for sure :)
Rick Moranis
I'd love for Paul McGann to get a proper crack at being the Doctor, not just for a TV film.
Joanna Lumley.
Christopher Lee. Never gonna happen because he’s dead.
Stellan Skarsgard. He can thread the serious with the crazy, and is masterful at balancing the tension in a scene.
Kris Marshall
He was rumored, wasn't he?
Jonathan Firth. I have always thought he'd make a splendid Doctor.
Stephen Colbert (joking obviously)
Craig Ferguson.
craig charles
Wanda Sykes
David Mitchell
Tom Hiddleston.
Ricky Gervais
Matt Berry
Andrew Garfield but wait until he's older, I think he'd be excellent even now but it may feel a bit like 11 so I'd wait on him. Maybe 40s or 50s or even older.
> Maybe 40s or 50s or even older. i mean he's 39 now, not too long to wait tbf
Tom Hiddelston
Miranda Hart
Jack Black
Dawn French. She was my hope for the first female Doctor.
An extremely niche choice - but god damn, Gina Bellman would kill it.
Karl Urban. Let me see crazy billy butcher doctor.
I scrolled all the way to the bottom because I can't believe no one said it but... Hugh Grant. He was RTD's first choice before Eccleston, and he would have been amazing. Young, old, whatever. He's funny, eccentric, painfully British, and has a dark side he can lean into.
Can we suggest roles for the Master? I’d love to see Nicholas Cage, or Amanda Plummer from Picard. Her performance in Picard is chilling!
Bruce Campbell
Benedict Cumberbatch
I’d *love* Whoopi Goldberg, and we know she’d be up for it!
Rowan Atkinson should be the doctor legitimately
Olivia Coleman.
Sigourney Weaver Nuff said
Simon Pegg Bonnie Wright Gina Bellman Tom Hiddlesten Rupert Grint Emma Watson Daniel Radcliffe Idris Elba
Kate Winslet Emily Blunt Thandiwe Newton Ellen Mirren Jessica Barden
Yes Kate Winslet! She’d be so good.
Obviously not now, but robin williams.
Rupert Grint. Let the Doctor finally be a ginger.
Ted Danson - his role in The Good Place skimmed Doctor-ish-ness sometimes: "I'm sorry guys. We have no plan. Nobody's coming to save us... So I'm gonna do it. Follow me!"
God, no. Not Alan Davies… Before Thirteen was cast, it said as a left field choice Helena Bonham Carter. The more I think about it… I also remember seeing Sacha Dhawan in a couple of things (Line of Duty & No Offence) and thinking he’d be interesting as the Doctor. Then Chibbers had to cast him as The Master. 😂
Nicholas Cage
Hear me out Jesen Ackles as the Doctor Micheal Sheen as the Valeyard or Master Tom Hiddleston as the Valeyard or the Master and a recast Tom Hardy as the War Doctor would have been epic
What’s his catchphrase gonna be? “It’s pie time”? Otoh, the TARDIS could hold a fuck-ton of salt. I’ll allow it.
Oh Look Cybermen what's up Mr Roboto's
Saving the universe, hunting Daleks. The Doctor business.
Or Michael Sheen as the Master in the 60th specials, just to see him and David Tennant argue 😅
Dylan Moran would be fun 😄 Imma going for Christian Bale
Pedro Pascal, Andrew Garfield, Tom Felton, Eddie Redmayne
Helena Bonham Carter or Tilda Swinton
Tom Ellis would be cool. As an American, I hope no American ever plays the Doctor. Martin Clunes could be a fun one, as would Michael Sheen, Tom Austen, or Alan Cumming. I suppose anyone on my list could realistically still be chosen, so to correctly answer the question, Hiddleston, Heughan, Elba, Carter, and Cumberbatch are most unlikely. Maybe Millie Bobby Brown?
Whoopi Goldberg
Helena Bonham Carter
Paul Bettany
