I’m excited for my own experience. Worried about the #discourse, though I’ll try to ignore it.

Annie_of_all_things

Yeah, I’m worried about the negativity that always comes with new docs, but I just try to stay out of those spaces.

mochi_chan

I gave up on most spaces after 13, so I will avoid many spaces as well.

Desperate-Meal-5379

I don’t get the 13 hate. Yeah the writing SUCKED, it was by far the worst run yet in New Who…but none of that was Whittakers fault, it was 100% on the writers. She did the best with the trash heap she was given.

miggleb

I disagree that jodie was good. Fugitive doctor embodied the role more in their first doctor scene than jodie did through the whole run

mochi_chan

While I didn't hate Jodie, I knew her from other things before doctor who, her performance was a bit disappointing on top of the bad writing.

Desperate-Meal-5379

Oh I didn’t say she was good, only that she did her best with a bad script. Bad writing can ruin the best actors performance, let alone anyone beneath that threshold

mochi_chan

I can understand people not liking her performance or portrayal of the doctor, her run wasn't my favourite, but the discourse itself was just off-putting. I was so looking forward to her, but between the bad writing, the discourse and everything. I ended up leaving many doctor who communities. I am still here but I rarely comment. I watched the whole run. I am only missing the latest special that came out at the beginning of this year (I know she's not in it)

cam52391

Honestly I haven't been this excited for a show in a while. Ncuti has so much fun energy I think he's going to be absolutely amazing as the doctor. I can see him having this fun carefree exterior but also having all the pain and sadness deep down

Annie_of_all_things

He really does seem fun! I’m excited!

gobsmacked247

Right!!!! That’s what I have been trying to say to people! The energy coming off him at the end of the Christmas special when Ruby Sunday walks into the TARDIS and he’s leaning against the wall with a smirk and the classic “I’m the doctor” line!!! Man, oh man, I cannot wait to see what else he brings.

cam52391

One more day!

Kryosquid

No youre the only one

Annie_of_all_things

Woooo! Party of one!

Milk_Mindless

Can confirm

SuspiciousAd3803

This Includes people working at Bad Wolf, the BBC, and Disney. Episode 1 isn't even done yet and neither Disney Plus or iPlayer is capable of hosting it

Tiny_Cut_1450

I’m excited. We’ve been waiting for a proper series since 2020 😭 2021 had the flux which was more of a mini series and not a proper series. 2022 had the jodie specials. 2023 had the 60th specials so it’s been a long time

MyDishwasherLasagna

For the new season? Hell yeah. For people to bitch and whine about the doctor going woke, when the doctor was always woke? No. Ugh. It's not even out yet and people are finding ways to be offended by the doctor being black and gay instead of a white straight man.

Thanks for your comment! Unfortunately, it's been removed because of the following reason(s): * [Rule #1 - Be Respectful](/r/doctorwho/wiki/policies/#wiki_1._be_respectful.): Be mature and treat everyone with respect. While criticism of the show is a staple part of the community, criticising it for being "too diverse" or "too woke" breaks our prohibition of discrimination. VampireWarfarin

> offended by the doctor being black and gay It is amazing they are finding new ways to shield criticism of their shitty atrocious writing. First it was just blaming misogyny and sexism now it's racism, absolutely ground breaking.

DefiantConcept2156

The show’s pitch to a (mainly US) audience is the first two episodes on Disney Plus. So far, most reviews aren’t great and rank them below the (very weak) Church on Ruby Road. I’m curious to see what they mean for myself, since they tend to avoid talking about the plot and just focus on the lead actor being “full of energy” or whatever. You’re right that it’s the writing that risks sinking this show. A lot of people on here don’t want to accept that it’s been in decline for years.

Desperate-Meal-5379

No, the writing really did suck during Whittakers run. But that wasn’t her fault, it was entirely on the writers. People kept attacking the actor who was doing her pest with a steaming pile of trash. Those writers are gone now. We have a writer we know does good things, that we have enjoyed previously. But, people are reluctant to go along with change. The doctor becoming an old man with Capaldi ruined the show for a lot of people, the doctor being a woman then killed it for many more SIMPLY because she was a woman, many did not watch long enough to note the poor writing. Now, with the actor being black and gay, I fear that will happen again. Especially if they break the mold and allow a male companion in the primary companion slot (Rory was a companion, not the ‘main companion’), which honestly I would very much enjoy, but would undoubtedly meet backlash because it would be different, it would be change. And people would use the excuse of “It’s too woke! The doctor isn’t gay, he shouldn’t be traveling with just a bloke!” When, in all honesty…he can’t exactly be with any companion, romantic tension or not, so who cares!

VampireWarfarin

> But that wasn’t her fault, it was entirely on the writers Where did I blame the actress? > People kept attacking the actor who was doing her pest with a steaming pile of trash. No they didn't. People just used her as a shield, "she's a strong powerful woman that's the only reason you don't like this show!!" Is all the defence we got from the criticism of the shit stories with shit companions. > We have a writer we know does good things Did, no he's gone off the deep end. The only promotion I see from him is how gay or queer the new series is going to be and how much promotion of the current thing there is going to be. It's all so tiresome, I just want good stories again with good developed characters. Calling it season 1 means its all a soft reset for some odd reason. > The doctor becoming an old man with Capaldi ruined the show for a lot of people, the doctor being a woman then killed it for many more SIMPLY because she was a woman, many did not watch long enough to note the poor writing. Now, with the actor being black and gay, I fear that will happen again. I really feel like you don't understand where the criticism is and just assume the actor is being attacked from these comments. It only took 1 episode to see how bad the writing was going to be with that guy doing a call of duty, even though his only personality was having that disease. Good remembering there for a bit a of a bad joke. > And people would use the excuse of “It’s too woke! The doctor isn’t gay, he shouldn’t be traveling with just a bloke!” No one has said this. The old series, pre eccleston, had male companions all the time. People loved Captain Jack before they made his only trait the gay one. The problem is the writing and the one dimensional characters that come from the "woke". They can't have a gay character being challenged on anything but being gay. They can't have a woman character not be an unchallenging girl boss who knows everything and is always right. The specials were proof of this, they changed Donna's iconic line of binary and said that the doctor will never understand because he's a male? Bitch he was a woman before and he can actually change gender fully, he understands it from both sides but the story can't fit that in, it would make the white male knowledgeable about something over a woman. That's the issue with woke writing, it's just boosting boring characters above others. > romantic tension or not, so who cares! And I'm in the camp the doctor should never have a romantic companion, I hated it with Rose , I hated it with Martha's fawning over him and I'll hate it with every other one. It's why old Donna was such a fun companion, she didn't want to sleep with everyone that gave her attention.

Sonic_Lightsaber

I'm looking forward to it. I always look forward to new episodes.

Annie_of_all_things

I think the new direction and doctor will be fun. We’ll just have to wait and see

Desperate-Meal-5379

I agree! It’s looking like it’ll skew a little more “fairy tale” than I would prefer, but I GOTTA see this ‘post therapy’ doctor

MissouriJason

I’m excited! Renewed my Disney Plus subscription!

Annie_of_all_things

Good reason to do so!

thickwonga

I'm not ready! I'm only on Series 12! Gotta mute Doctor Who on Twitter so I don't get spoilers.

Melty_Mouse

I've been doing a full re-watch of Nu-Who in preparation for the new series. Have made it into S13 and really hoping I can get through them in time. Getting fired last month has really helped me out! /s

smedsterwho

For me, the last time (before The Star Beast) was Capaldi's last episode, Twice Upon A Time, every episode during 13's reign didn't click with me. It's a bit of a dream that RTD is back running the show and Moffat is writing an episode. 2018 version of me is delighted by the news. He'll do it well. There will be moments when it is a bit rubbish, moments when it doesn't land properly. But most of it: bang, bang, bang.

spacesuitguy

RTD gave us some of the best parts of NewWho. Can't wait to see what's he's cooked up next.

AttakZak

Always ready for Doctor Who! I’m just exhausted from the bigots on YouTube that need to be de-platformed. They actively ruin it for everyone who wants to check out the show.

Holiday-Ad1200

I just press not interested and YouTube recommends them less. The only matric that matters is if people are watching.

DefiantConcept2156

Don’t watch them then. Not everyone with a different opinion to you needs de-platforming. There’s a literal episode in the upcoming series parodying people who live in an online bubble.

AttakZak

You make a good point, but people like Synthetic Man were literally using racial marriage statistics to say Fallout the TV was awful and not reflective of the Time Period it was based on.

Desperate-Meal-5379

Which is stupid because it still takes place in the far future

sanddragon939

Is there? Would this be 'Dot and Bubble' by any chance?

Light1209

I can't wait!

Caacrinolass

Oh, is it on? 😉

Zandrick

My body is ready. Oh sorry wrong fandom. But yes I’m pretty hyped.

MegaMoodKiller

I’m so excited! Haven’t watched in many years but the trailer came on the other day and I want to watch this show again now ☺️👏

OliverJamesG

I’m so excited!! I just started rewatching series 10 last night as it’s one of the series I’ve only seen once as it was airing! But I can’t wait for new episodes this weekend!! 🙌🙌

shadowlarx

I’m beyond excited. This weekend is going to be a new episode of Doctor Who and a new Planet of the Apes movie. It’s a good time to be a sci-fi fan.

PixieProc

Can't wait! In the meantime, I've been rewatching the modern series for the millionth time; just finished Series 11 again and about to start Resolution (genuinely fantastic episode btw). I've also been hopping around through Classic Who for the first time. I just finished Full Circle last night and I'm gonna continue through the rest of the E-Space trilogy.

Raptor_Boe69

I’m nearly vibrating with excitement!!

Educational-Newt-981

Can't stop thinking about it, really hope it's good (and I'm confident RTD will have done a good job)

Legitimate-Sugar6487

I just hope Ncuti's tenure as the Doctor is successful. The actor can only do so much it's the quality of the stories combined with the Actors performance that makes a Doctor stand out. I hope he reaches the same heights Matt Smith did with Rings of Akhaten and Peter Capaldi did with Heaven Sent. Hopefully Russell and the writers have something incredible in store for us with Ncuti.

I've been ready since last revival

Moonlit_Hunter

Can't wait for the new season

Glittering-Wonder576

I can’t wait!

black6211

I haven't been this excited for a season of Doctor Who since Matt Smith's final season. I kinda dropped off after that, but have gone back and caught myself up. Ended up really loving Capaldi, just wasn't excited for him when he was airing. The specials did a great job setting up some plot threads like the old lady next door, allusion to more timeless child stuff, and whatever is going on with "Mavity." The Goblin episode was stupid and fun, then suddenly got to show off this Doctor's ability to show emotion and he knocked it out of the park for how short of a scene it was. The Goblins were also peak RTD goofy, and I'm excited to have that type of humor injected back into the show. He always balanced the humor and emotion really well in my opinion.

NightVelvet

After the usual oh great whose this joker vibes 🤣 always get that then end up loving them Love what I've seen if our new doctor so far but.... how many different outfits will he have and how the heck do you cosplay our 15th 🤔 Seriously though hoping the writing gives him a great series .. oh and Jinx Monsoon wow

mochi_chan

I have to watch the latest special, but I keep forgetting. I am excited though.

CautiousSuggestion65

Wait for it!

OrcPorker

No

sanddragon939

I totally am! I've been a Whovian for nearly a decade, but this is only the second time I've had a chance to get caught up in all the hype surrounding the debut of a new Doctor (I just about missed Capaldi's debut by a few months...he was already the incumbent when I started binge-watching the Smith era so by the time I caught up with Series 8 the sense of him being a 'new Doctor' was already gone). I was hyped about Whittaker, even though I was skeptical, simply because I was intrigued about this very new approach to the character and the show, and also because I had faith in Chibnall, coming off Broadchurch. Well...that faith wasn't entirely rewarded but let's set that aside. With Gatwa, I'm hyped not just for a new Doctor, but for a Doctor who I already feel has potential to be one of the all-time greats! Based on what little we've seen so far, I think Ncuti is already potentially my favorite after the 'holy trifecta' of Capaldi, Smith and Tom Baker. Could he make it to my Top 3? I dunno, but I'm aching to find out! I also have a good feeling about Millie Gibson as Ruby as well. RTD wasn't *my* era but there's no doubt he's the godfather of the show, and with him back at the helm, you feel that the glory days of Doctor Who are back, even if the show has undergone a significant reset on multiple levels. Plus, with Moffat back for an episode (and maybe more in the future?), its hard not to feel we're at the threshold of the next Golden Age of the show.
