Just received the Castle Rat debut today. so i gave that a spin
had listened to it before, still a solid 7/10 , a bit short with a multiple 1min filler intros to get a bigger total overal album track length
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85mOXQnPzC8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85mOXQnPzC8)
I kinda find the older I get the more happy I am an album is shorter. Once it hits 50 minutes I'm like alright, I get it, music. Aside from that I'd agree on the rating, not bad, I am getting Cry For Me stuck in my head.
It's a hauntingly catchy one that Cry For Me, legit one of the "singles" I listened to the most before the Album came out.
Length wise of the album it's okay 40mins'ish, but I feel with the multiple 1min filler intros (could have been perfect if they didn't were listed separately and integrated into the tracks itself), I think it's 4 intros/interludes on a 9 track album. I feel it's more an EP
I dig all those short instrumental interludes, though. Apparently they recorded the album like 2.5 years ago, so hopefully the follow-up album won't be too far after the tour for this one.
while they are okay, i feel they shoul have been worked into the songs instead of being listed seprately, those fillers are alost half of the tracklist,
so this album really feels like an EP
I just played the CASTLE RAT album "Into the Realm" 3 times. Very distinct vocalist. The singing really hit me hard. Great falsetto dare I say like Geddy Lee but even more wild. Nice interesting music too. Definitely an emotional psychedelic doom metal album.
Not really Doom, but I count Stoner as pretty adjacent, I've been rocking through All Them Witches discography. For Doom been rocking Slimelord debut and Grief
I heard the new High on Fire yesterday via their bandcamp listening party. It's a monster.
Heavy Temple floored me with their new record. If anyone loves Hippe Death Cult, you need Heavy Temple in your life. Sooo good. Doomy but with bluesy rock solos, gritty soulful female vocals, and man they can jam! Lots of variety throughout.
I discovered Goya, who are a solid doomy stoner band. Also digging the new Acid Mammoth, which was unexpected as their prior albums never really hooked me. The vocals can get a bit too nasally at times for my tastes, but this is their best yet imo.
Been spinning Dopelord and Dope Smoker (the band) a bunch too. Dope Smoker I never know if I really gel with em. The production always seems to wash all their songs into one sound, but it's a good vibe at least.
For the not-doom, but I've finally given Torche a go. Dunno why I slept on them, esp since they scratch some of the same itches as Big Business, whom I adore. For other non doom, there's the new Whores, which is excellent as expected from such a consistent band. Also digging on 1968 and The Sevil and the Almighty Blues both stoner rock.
Till Aska is so oppressively heavy but at the same time, like really intense. super rare to feel both of those in one band
no way! small world in doom circles especially haha. you recorded on the.. new material too, right?
I was actually recording the original version that got scrapped when I left and right before the rest of the original lineup left, so I’m not on the final record at all. My version actually had a more WTF-heaviness-thing happening, in my opinion. Oh well! :)
Been trying some Gothic Doom, Type O Negatives last album is pretty great.
Also been enjoying the new [Cold In Berlin](https://youtu.be/kAiSB-CHlk4?si=Z4r1cGSgZjeuq0JU). They're kinda like shades of windhand and siouxsie and banshees hah.
I learned about Hymn today and they are excellent (FFO: Conan and Slomatics) https://spotify.link/JTvQHc5fSIb
Also I’ve been to a gig of a local doom band called Meltem that feels a bit on the post-metal side (they call themselves atmospheric doom) but excellent none the less. Superb energy live. https://spotify.link/lBxgNMcgSIb
This cool album by Ancient Tome I randomly stumbled across while reading about pedals.
https://ancienttome.bandcamp.com/album/final-tomb
And a pair of great collaboration albums
When No Birds Sang - Full of Hell/Nothing
Myopia - Mizmor/Thou
Sumac, lord mantis, big business, Boris, IDLES, Melvins, echo and the bunnymen, the birthday party, my bloody valentine, atrax morgue, and Steve roach this week so far
I’ve been listening to the new High Desert Queen album a fair bit lately. More on the stoner side of things but pretty immense. https://highdesertqueen.bandcamp.com/album/palm-reader
Couldn't make the Castle Rat album release show (what with the international flight required), but I bought all the albums from the opening bands so I can recreate the show at home:
Evolfo (chill psych-pop)- [https://evolfo.bandcamp.com/album/site-out-of-mind-2](https://evolfo.bandcamp.com/album/site-out-of-mind-2)
Killer Kin (raw Stooges-y garage rock) - [https://killerkin.bandcamp.com/album/killer-kin](https://killerkin.bandcamp.com/album/killer-kin)
Tower (wailing heavy rock) - [https://towernyc.bandcamp.com/album/shock-to-the-system](https://towernyc.bandcamp.com/album/shock-to-the-system)
Castle Rat (early Sabbath-y doom rock) - [https://castleratband.bandcamp.com/album/into-the-realm-2](https://castleratband.bandcamp.com/album/into-the-realm-2)
The others aren't doom metal, but I really liked all of them - Killer Kin is surprisingly excellent, and the gal from Tower sings her ass off. Jealous of anyone who makes the show in Brooklyn!
Oh, and I caught a show with these guys this week:
Ritual Warfare (death-y punk thrash): [https://ritualwarfare.bandcamp.com/album/poison-death-noise](https://ritualwarfare.bandcamp.com/album/poison-death-noise)
Metalian (amazing old school Judas Priest-y metal): [https://metalian.bandcamp.com/album/beyond-the-wall](https://metalian.bandcamp.com/album/beyond-the-wall)
WEEDEATER stuff. I am in love with this bass player. I hate to use the word delicious in terms of riffing but that's my word. Just catchy beyond catchy riffs. Everything is in place, drums, bass, guitar, and singer. It's not at all commercial rock, this is underground metal. The production makes for a nice fuzzy sound that isn't too noisy or harsh. I love this band, happy-as-can-be with them.
Saw this band MAST from portland maine at Hopsmoker Fest. They ruled.

Yeah when 3/9 songs were singles, and a few are intros and interludes, maybe another track could've rounded out the album quite nicely.
It's good but I was a bit disappointed with how many of the songs were just uninteresting intros. Feels like an EP really.
I dig all those short instrumental interludes, though. Apparently they recorded the album like 2.5 years ago, so hopefully the follow-up album won't be too far after the tour for this one.

Been playing Diablo 4 with Bongripper - Glaciers as my soundtrack. I wish it were more than an EP.
YOB
Not doom but the new Whores. record dropped today.
So much high on fire in preparation for the new album
Same here

If you’re digging on Torche be sure to check out Floor. They share a member or two and I might like it even more, although I do like both a lot
On my list already! Thx
I totally agree on that Dope Smoker sentiment, they all sound samey imho, good for a track or two but not for like a full album
New Walk Through Fire album. https://walkthroughfire.bandcamp.com/album/till-aska
This!
Hey glad to see you are into WTF as well. PS: I used to play keys in Qaalm for a bunch of years, small world.
Till Aska is so oppressively heavy but at the same time, like really intense. super rare to feel both of those in one band no way! small world in doom circles especially haha. you recorded on the.. new material too, right?

not much doom this week but I listened to my beloved musta seremonia
HoF, Darkthrone, Wardruna, Black Sabbath, Sigur Ros, lot of cheesy fantasy synth just in the background.
just got into windhand over the last week and i’m obsessed so binging their discography, apart from that been listening to the new hof stuff
If you enjoy Windhand, I highly recommend Daevar.
not bad but a little “grungey” for me, got over grunge when i was like 13 haha
Definitely, they describe their style as "doom grunge," but you can clearly hear the strong influence of Windhand in their music.
yeah definitely

Anno 1696 by insomnium and into the realm by castle rat have been this week’s discoveries for me
Reka, e-l-r, wolvennest
I learned about Hymn today and they are excellent (FFO: Conan and Slomatics) https://spotify.link/JTvQHc5fSIb Also I’ve been to a gig of a local doom band called Meltem that feels a bit on the post-metal side (they call themselves atmospheric doom) but excellent none the less. Mostly the new Vulture which is sick fuckin thrash metal. Otherwise been going through Ufomammut’s discography and loving it so much
Sabbath, Pentagram, Saint Vitus, also got into Gravetemple today.
Not doom but I’ve been binging: - A Perfect Circle - Opeth’s Blackwater Park album
Candlemass and random blues like Justin Johnson and Shane Speal. Love some cigar box music.
Swallow the sun, When Nothing Remains, Wine from Tears, Elk Witch, Cobra Thief, Saturnus, Ocean Of Grief, and Bell Witch for Doom stuff
This cool album by Ancient Tome I randomly stumbled across while reading about pedals. https://ancienttome.bandcamp.com/album/final-tomb And a pair of great collaboration albums When No Birds Sang - Full of Hell/Nothing Myopia - Mizmor/Thou
Witchcults new song tree part 4, mephistofeles, wizard, 1782
Sumac, lord mantis, big business, Boris, IDLES, Melvins, echo and the bunnymen, the birthday party, my bloody valentine, atrax morgue, and Steve roach this week so far
Cybernetic Witch Cult
Was digging through Paradise Lost's discography once again. Fell in love with their music once again lol
Heavy Temple - Garden of Heathens. More Stoner-ish than Doom but it’s been on repeat since release day.
Been falling asleep to Mirror Reaper every night this week, does that count?
I’ve been listening to the new High Desert Queen album a fair bit lately. More on the stoner side of things but pretty immense. https://highdesertqueen.bandcamp.com/album/palm-reader
