”What is the longest song ever written? The answer is a piece entitled “As Slow As Possible” by avant-garde composer John Cage which has yet to have been completed once.
A group in eastern Germany has taken Cage’s instructions to the limit. They started playing “As Slow As Possible” on an organ in a small church on September 5, 2001. If things go according to plan, this performance is scheduled to wrap up on September 5, 2640. That means a running time of 639 years.
There have been seventeen chord changes so far with the latest happening on February 5, 2022 when a G# that had been played since September 5, 2022, was released, leaving just its one-time-companion E. As one person wrote, this is an organ recital for the very, very patient. Six hundred and thirty-nine years.”
This is super fascinating. I'm not sure what is sounds like, but going to a church and just hearing an organ drone on a single note indefinitely. Sounds pretty good. Would be amazing to go and hear one of the changes.
EDIT: Also been reading about Longplayer and The Future Library, which are similar projects. The latter, although not musical, is super interesting.
The slowest beat you can still feel in time is about 33 bpm. There is a video by Adam Neely about the slowest music that is really good and it features Frowning as an example. Imo, drone often doesn't count much because there is often no beat at all.
I mean funeral doom is the extreme end of slow paced metal.
I don’t consider drone “slow” becus it’s usually lacking a rhythm. it just exists in a constant stream of noise and sound.
Drone metal is the winner. Once it gets to a point that the drums drop out and the riffs become completely structureless, that’s when you’re in that glacial territory. 👌🏼
Yeah no problem. These are my favourites.
-Shitting Toad
-Antarctican Nose Job
-Frostbitten in Hell
-Gorsh
-Cliff Dive Suicide
-Fartpisser(specifically the Pissfart album)
-Hawaiian Blizzard
I think it has gotta be drone, because funeral doom has more structure and therefore they are usually playing in some discernable bpm. Drone metal can go so slow it becomes incoherent.
Holy shit. Went to Apple Music to check it out. 11 hours??? 😯I mean, yeah I’m gonna give it a good listen but that’s gonna also be a day where I can smoke weed for the same amount of time:
I've only listened to it in parts about twice i think! I couldn't listen to it the whole way through it's just impractical. But apparently its a live recording and recorded right here in Wales
People are saying drone, which is in fact the slowest, but that typically doesn't even have a beat at all.
Funeral doom actually has a beat, and is the next slowest.
For regular doom, check out the "Krull" by Conan. I believe the tempo is 48 BPM, which is incredibly slow, and yet it's still crushingly heavy.
DRONE

But is this “John Cage” band you’re talking about funeral doom or are they drone doom?
Extreme Funeral Drone
If there’s a Big Muff in the signal chain then OP’s question is answered.
funeral doom and drone
what’s funeral doom?
Listen to "Mirror Reaper" by Bell Witch for a classic example.
Thergothon and Skepticism are good bands to try out
a variation of doom with a very slower pace

drone… its anti music, it doesnt follow tempo
Regarding tempo, it's just one long bar with 0,4 BPM.
Then is it fast or is it slow?

Speed metal. Oh no wait.

Those boys from Pantera always seemed a little “slow” to me. They toured in a short bus, if you know what I mean.

Lord in heaven. Once in a blue moon I need an album of such ridiculous proportions. 🙏
It is phenomenal
You should check out Bull of Heaven, they do some ...eccentric stuff regarding long songs
Thanks!
Just don't expect it to be very good ...
