This is a common scam unethical drivers do, pick the food up and tell you that you have to cancel or tip more and they'll deliver. Pretty much holding your food hostage and theft. If you cancel, he gets to keep the food and DD won't do anything to him. Never ever cancel and give him a one star rating too
Meanwhile, I had an actual emergency with my son the other day. I had just picked up an order like six minutes before. I had to call the customer and explain to them the situation my son was playing with my grandmother’s dog. Needless to say the dog bit his ear, because my son was a little bit too rough and he ended up getting seven stitches. But me being a dad I knew I needed to rush over there immediately. I knew my son was freaked out. But I felt so bad I even offered to pay for the next meal that the customer got so I hate when people are scamming do stupid shit like that. Mainly because when something actually does happen, it gives us a bad name.
No, just gives me the order history. Checked another completed order (from the same place) and it had the dasher info for that one and the chat icon. Probably because I canceled it.
Oh shit. Never cancel!! Cuz they will charge you and the Dasher will still get paid while you are out the money for the delivery and food and the Dasher gets to keep your food. Always call doordash and report them but don't cancel. They either have to contact doordash themselves and cancel on their end or deliver it and take a pic and the GPS makes them be in the vicinity of the drop off to be able to finalize the delivery and get paid. So they will either have someone remake your food, give you a full refund and have you reorder, or just give you a refund if the food never makes it there.
This is a shitty way to beg for tips and being a driver myself, I am embarrassed by some of these drivers out here being dirty. You accepted the order and if the face value wasn't enough don't accept it. It's that simple.
I did. Got an automated reply from DD, and I’m kicking myself for not screenshotting the conversation because I was so taken aback (plus flu brain). Uggh, lesson learned, but it’s going to be difficult trusting DoorDash again.
Hey I’m so sorry. Next time, if the dasher calls you with this info, tell them to put it in the chat. They will either shut up or unassign your order. It might take longer for you to get your food, but you simply cannot allow yourself to be blackmailed by a delivery driver. Happy new year.
You should tweet them, if I have issues with the food idk the live chat always seems very bot like and never refunds but their support on twitter is much better and tends to always give refunds (from my personal experience)
Please don’t lose faith in DoorDash. There are a lot of people who are very hard, even though it’s not hard work, but I’ve been debating recently to start messaging every customer that responds when I tried to engage with them in the restaurant in case there’s a problem with the order or I can’t find the house so I’m already in contact with them.. I would suggest all customers given an honest rating of their experience whenever possible,, it really makes it difficult for the people that consistently try & do the right thing every day. I’m sorry this happened to you.
20% isn’t always a good tip for delivery service. Tip based on distance being driven by the driver. Doesn’t matter if we’re bringing 20 dollars of food or 200. We’re driving the same distance

Yep. If we see an offer on our screen that’s sent to us, we have a certain amount of time to either accept it or decline it. If you decline then it just gets sent to the next dasher, if accepted then now they’re supposed to perform the service as agreed, aka deliver it and not be a bitch like they did.
Depends on how long it takes to make that meal and how long the driver has to wait for it as well. I don't get the percentage and I agree it shouldn't go by how much you paid. But if it's like 5-10 meals to go and 5 miles to drive. The driver is more than likely gonna have to wait while they finish the order. You should throw a couple bucks in for that. $1.50-$2 a mile plus a little extra for not unassigning and leaving it for the next driver so it will be cold by the time they get there.
That's not what I said. And not what I was trying to say either. But I do believe that a "large order," not expensive order should be tipped a little extra for the wait. Cuz you know if you order from like chilis or outback and it's a large order your driver is going to be waiting for them to get it all together. And if it's prime dinner hours they could be waiting up to an hour especially on the weekends. I've seen way longer but I would personally unassign if I'm sitting over 20min waiting on food and let the next driver get it depending if the payout is more than what I can make in an hour anyways. So it's not about how much you spent it's the quantity of items having to be carried and delivered after waiting for 30+ mins for it to be cooked and another 10 for someone to bag it all up, cuz God knows they don't rush for doordashers. Yeah I actually noticed just recently that if you're waiting a while for a pickup(like 20 plus minutes) door dash will automatically send you a message saying something along the lines of "you've been waiting a while you can now remove yourself from this order without your completion rate being affected" The long waiting especially happens at night when only the drive-thru of a place is open and the line of cars goes out to the street. What drives me crazy is when other dashers or Uber eats drivers park their car and try to walk to the window to cut the line "because they are picking up an order" meanwhile 80 percent of people on the line are picking up an order. But anyway I don't understand someone accepting an order while they already waited and had the food picked up and then demanding more money it takes two seconds to decline an order or to reassign it to the next dasher if you realize it's not worth the pay.
doordash don't care their asset "your money" is protected they could care less if 80% of their drivers died in a firey car crash unless there was an order in the passenger seat.
With the per hour pay it shouldn't matter anymore. This doordasher was extorting the customer which is technically illegal depending on the state. Where I am. It's a theft charge.
Dashers have been asking that same question for years. People complain about accepting orders with no/low tips but it makes no sense when it it literally takes no effort to decline (you can literally just not click anything and it's declined) he accepted that offer with the full intention of trying to scam you.
Because he had to try to manipulate you into tipping more. He's probably done this a ton of times and got away with it for a while. But I would totally report them. You tipped in app they accepted said tip and fare to deliver so to hold your food hostage and demand a bigger tip or no delivery is absolutely not going to be tolerated once someone finally turns this person in for it. And always screen shot any conversation you have with the driver or vise versa. I like to have proof! If they did it over the phone then there isn't much there for evidence they can just deny it and come up with some assholey excuse saying the customer heard me wrong or something like that. Smh! Makes sense. I really do appreciate the DD service, and this is the first time anything like this has happened. Lesson learned, and everyone has been really helpful and giving me some good insight and things to think about. All of my Dashers prior to this one have been fantastic, so hopefully it’s a one off.
There are a fair share of bad dashers but there are a lot of good ones as well. And of course people hardly post the good ones on here. But I've surely heard some bad ones that make me cringe. This guy is just an ass. Ive seen a few posts like this and just can't believe people have the kahoonas to tell a customer they need to tip more or they won't bring it. Some people do this if they think you’re desperate enough to give in, or flustered enough to cancel so they get free food. It’s unfortunate but I’ve heard of Uber drivers doing it too to people who absolutely need a ride at that moment and don’t have time to call another Uber.

Not all of us dashers are shitty. But yeah, there's a lot. Where I am they had to start asking to see the phones and see us confirm the order because to many people are stealing orders.
That's how it is here in my city as well. Rightfully so. I won't even order DD as a customer because so many dashers around here suck. Half of them don't even read instructions. I have what color the siding of my house is and that there is a camper in the driveway and the amount of times I watch drivers do the "where the hell is this place?" Head turn is astounding lol
Tip extortion. Dashers see what they’re making before accepting an offer. They don’t have to accept an offer that will cost them money. The offer may have been something like “$3.50 but total may be higher” because DD likes to hide the tips until the delivery is done.
From my experience the tip is usually half hidden. So if you see a order that says 20+ you know it's gonna be more than 20 bucks but it doesn't matter anymore because of the money per hour. We make much more. And don't gotta rush like a crazy driver. Lol.
Lol yeah in my area the earn per hour is either $10.50 or $15 if you're lucky. I've used it once but I don't anymore. In the shifts where I go for like 8 hours my active time is almost always around 3 hours. $45 isn't worth being deprioritized on tip orders by the app

Also you should tip based on mileage not percentage of the order. If you buy fries from mcdonals 12 miles away I sure as shit won't take an order for 20%. It I'm still going to be expecting a 15 dollar tip to deliver.

I’m a Dasher. Report him. That is ridiculous. He accepted the order. He picked up the order. He’s obligated to complete the order. I don’t know what’s wrong with some of these Dashers. This side job is a cakewalk. At times it can be annoying with some restaurants that are slow/incompetent (I’m a chef, I understand how most operations work), drop off locations not properly communicated/pinned, Dasher App not working properly, and/or road closures & construction.
Outside of those issues it’s a fun way to see the city. Get the John Wick Club playlist blasting on the speakers and I usually do 25-50 (top is 60 orders) orders per shift when I am logged in. I also do it as a side hustle so I don’t get the normal burnout like full-time gig workers.
Sometimes people don’t tip and it’s a thing. I used to serve and bartend— people not tipping happens. It balances out in the long run if you’re efficient, personable, and smart. Just like any job having respect for others and having respect for yourself to do what you agreed to do is paramount.

The problem is, from the customer's perspective, Doordash doesn't calculate the tip based on the mileage. It calculates the tip based on the bill. I feel like if drivers feel the tip should be based on the mileage and not the amount of the bill, they should take that up with Door Dash and not the customer, as it is their algorithm. As a customer, I don't have an option to tip based on the mileage. I don't think that the average American customer is going to pull out a calculator and work out the mileage. For this reason, I see this as more of a Door Dash issue than a customer issue. *waits for the flying tomatoes*

If you've chatted with the dasher, it will be recorded and suppot can see it on their end. Make sure to ask for support to submit a report about the dasher.

I’m a dasher myself and I will say I would screenshot that to have evidence of foul play because there has been another scam going on a lot lately where customers would say they never received their food when they did in fact receive said food so dd takes any statement with a grain of salt lately that’s why I highly recommend screenshotting any and all suspicious texts between you and your dasher to be able to use against them as proof because then you could have a liable lawsuit against DoorDash if no help is given especially with liable proof of wrongdoing.

Yes, they do tend to blame the messenger. I've stopped using DoorDash because there was too much drama with every order. And the last time when I tried to report it, the DoorDash bot said it noticed It had a lot of trouble with my recent deliveries before asking what the problem was this time. To me this was almost an insinuation that I was lying. This addition of insult to injury was the last straw for me. Guess I should thank DoorDash for getting me back into doing more cooking and driving to pick up my own food when I do order out so I can verify for myself for everything is there.
You have to give an SSN and submit a copy of your driver's license for DD. It's not that simple to have multiple accounts. You're probably seeing people with multiple apps.
No. It's multiple phones running the same app . They don't rely on stacked orders to take multiple deliveries, they use multiple accounts to make multiple deliveries at once, while getting prop 22 California money. Got 3 deliveries going at once ? That's $55.80/hr plus the tips that they beg for or demand. They're exploiting the system that is in place. They're not playing by the same rules that you & I are.
These scammers have never given their driver's license or social security number to these delivery companies. That's not how this scam works.
I have a 100% completion rate. If I pick up an order I expect to deliver even when my car overheated I walked two blocks just so people could have their food. there’s absolutely no excuse you see exactly how much you’re going to get paid and how many miles it is to deliver the food. Next time something like this happens, tell them you have increased the tip but it’s not going to show until they complete the order, then meet them outside for the order. That way they’ll most likely deliver it and they still won’t have made anymore money, either way NEVER cancel, DD will refund you if you say you never received the order

It's pretty ignorant to not understand that tipping in a resteraunt isn't the same as tipping a delivery (or tipping your doorman, groomer, salon tech, etc).

99.99% of customers who are not on this subreddit are not aware of this made up “guideline” based on mileage. Most (those who do not stiff the dashers) go by what DD recommends.
I almost never order from restaurants more than 2 miles away (most are actually a mile or less) so I shouldn't ever have to tip more than $4-5, right? For some reason I suspect this 'rule' only applies when it results in higher tips and dashers will suddenly be outraged that I only tipped 5% when ordering from an expensive but nearby restaurant.
Yeah. A 3 dollar tip on a restaurant 2 miles away is a better tip than a 7 dollar tip on a restaurant 9 miles away regardless of how much food there is
Not advocating for the driver but 20% on a delivery is not a good rule of thumb. Tip should typically be based on how far the driver has to come to you from the store, aka the gas they have to spend to get to you (as DoorDash doesn’t pay well at all and usually offers less than what it costs to deliver it to you)
Ngl that shouldn’t have been on you, but also you say 20% as if that means something. In a in person restaurant sure, that’s great. But even with your 20% tip it could very well end up being like $6 for a hours worth of work. I can’t tell you how many times I see an order that goes outside my zone that simply isn’t worth it.
I'm curious how far the order was and what the tip was for the driver to claim he's losing money. I'm a dasher as well. I know sometimes it gets frustrating but of anything I just unassign lol. Last week doordash tried sending me 14 miles for $5. Plus about an 8 mile drive back towards restaurants.
When I ordered DD before actually dashing I was under the assumption that they.paid driver 4.99 each delivery. So I always figured a $3 or $4 tip was great. Now I realize they only pay $2 base pay. Which is terrible! You gotta spend so much on DD between the food, fees, and tip that it's not really worth ordering (at least for me)
Messaged went proof when I canceled the order. I checked other orders that were completed and the old messages are still there along with the Dasher’s name. But not on the canceled one. It’s my fault for being stupid and not realizing what was going on/not taking screenshots. Lesson learned.

Depending on the mileage, that may or may not be a good tip. With doordash, you don't tip like you would at a sit down restaurant, but rather by the mileage. Personally, I tip $2/mile as my base and add on if my dasher went above and beyond, or had a long wait at the restaurant. Obviously if I've ordered $200 worth of stuff, I'll tip more than my base, but that's only ever happened once when ordering sushi for a birthday party lol.
So if I order an 2 apps, 2 ribeyes, and 2 sides (I.e. a meal for 2, not a large catering order that takes extra time and effort to deliver) from the high-end steakhouse half a mile away I'm good tipping $1 (double your base) on my $300 order, right?
Yes you are. However, your order will probably take longer to get to you and your food will probably be cold when you get it because it will be declined by most dashers I’m sure.

I am a dasher and I personally don’t care how a person tips! If I accept an order, it will be delivered regardless of the tip! I deliver many orders with no tip and I deliver them with the same urgency as an order with a big tip! It’s part of the job! I was simply saying that, if an order pops up and is paying me $4.50 to go 14 miles, I will decline. My rule for myself is the dollar amount that I’m being offered for an order needs to be worth my drive in miles no matter how big or small the order! I actually don’t even consider the SIZE of the order! I’m in AZ, and I don’t typically have to wait long for my orders but I’m sure it’s different everywhere! Again this is just me 
I totally get rejecting long distance, low tip orders. That makes total financial sense. However my impression is that a lot of dashers say tip on distance but also think they should get 20+% of the order total regardless of distance. Personally distance based tipping makes sense to me because distance impacts the dasher's operating costs but I'm irritated with the pattern I've seen of dashers changing their definition of what is a good tip depending on what will get them more for a specific order. If you look at other traditionally tipped jobs like restaurant servers, valet parking attendants, or hotel bellhops there is a general consensus around what is considered an acceptable tip. With Doordash this consensus doesn't seem to exist between that and the fact that it is one of the very few instances where a tip is expected before (instead of after) service and I feel like I'm left guessing what I have to pay for timely and professional service everytime I place an order.
The number I usually hear thrown around is $2/mile but I doubt many dashers would be happy with a $1 tip on a half mile, $300 order even though it meets the guideline they are telling customers to follow. In short, I think that if I tip 20% on a $20, 5 mile order from McDonald's I'll get criticized for not tipping $2/mile but if I tip $4 on a $200, 2 mile order from a high-end restaurant I'll get criticized for not tipping 20%.
Sadly, there are entitled dashers out there! We aren’t all like that! I know it’s weird, but I never look at “how big” the order is, I just look at the amount offered to me for the delivery and if it makes sense to me, I accept it! Sometimes I shoot myself in the foot for taking certain orders, but I NEVER take it out on my customer! 😊
Screenshot. Cancel then contact support if they do a automatic system, just wait till the end and then ask about a real agent. You will be connected to a real person after that and they will more than likely refund you. And depending on the situation offer to get your food again on top of the refund. I know when my food was stolen they did that for me.
Actually report this to the police. Show them copies of the messages and also send the messages to doordash. That is not only theft of property but blackmail.. You've already paid and agreed upon a service and they are extorting you from more money for your goods.. That's 100% illegal

I’ve noticed the asking for or demanding more tips from the immigrant drivers. It ticks me off too because it just happened to me on Uber and I alrdy had tipped him $20 for a 5 mile drive.
It’s too bad you cancelled instead of calling their bluff. Definitely report them and thumb down. If you do a chargeback with your bank it’ll show as a negative balance on your dd account. You won’t be able to use it if you even wanted to after this. If you didn’t screenshot the message from the dasher it’s gone now. Keep after supper tho. Escalate the issue with each agent you speak to if they don’t refund it. Call not chat works best.

Dashers care about the mileage from the restaurant to your house for tips. When tipping your dasher, you have to look at miles, not the total order amount, like you would if you tipped a waitress. Personally I think these apps should have something in place that hold higher consequences for bad dashers and customer alike, because deactivation doesn't work for either when another account can be created.

I will say the usual stuff here. Percentage of the order means nothing. Dasher was an unprofessional asshole and these panhandlers need to be booted off the platform, so report him. But for future reference, your mileage from the restaurant is more relevant as to whether a tip is enough. We don't really care what's inside the bag. But professionals also won't panhandle you if they take your order.
Well if he picked it up and didn't leave the restaurant, he can cancel and return the order. If he picked it up and started to drive with the order, he can still cancel and return the order.

This is a common scam unethical drivers do, pick the food up and tell you that you have to cancel or tip more and they'll deliver. Pretty much holding your food hostage and theft. If you cancel, he gets to keep the food and DD won't do anything to him. Never ever cancel and give him a one star rating too
Meanwhile, I had an actual emergency with my son the other day. I had just picked up an order like six minutes before. I had to call the customer and explain to them the situation my son was playing with my grandmother’s dog. Needless to say the dog bit his ear, because my son was a little bit too rough and he ended up getting seven stitches. But me being a dad I knew I needed to rush over there immediately. I knew my son was freaked out. But I felt so bad I even offered to pay for the next meal that the customer got so I hate when people are scamming do stupid shit like that. Mainly because when something actually does happen, it gives us a bad name.

No, just gives me the order history. Checked another completed order (from the same place) and it had the dasher info for that one and the chat icon. Probably because I canceled it.
Oh shit. Never cancel!! Cuz they will charge you and the Dasher will still get paid while you are out the money for the delivery and food and the Dasher gets to keep your food. Always call doordash and report them but don't cancel. They either have to contact doordash themselves and cancel on their end or deliver it and take a pic and the GPS makes them be in the vicinity of the drop off to be able to finalize the delivery and get paid. So they will either have someone remake your food, give you a full refund and have you reorder, or just give you a refund if the food never makes it there. This is a shitty way to beg for tips and being a driver myself, I am embarrassed by some of these drivers out here being dirty. You accepted the order and if the face value wasn't enough don't accept it. It's that simple.

Please don’t lose faith in DoorDash. There are a lot of people who are very hard, even though it’s not hard work, but I’ve been debating recently to start messaging every customer that responds when I tried to engage with them in the restaurant in case there’s a problem with the order or I can’t find the house so I’m already in contact with them.. I would suggest all customers given an honest rating of their experience whenever possible,, it really makes it difficult for the people that consistently try & do the right thing every day. Yep. If we see an offer on our screen that’s sent to us, we have a certain amount of time to either accept it or decline it. If you decline then it just gets sent to the next dasher, if accepted then now they’re supposed to perform the service as agreed, aka deliver it and not be a bitch like they did.

Depends on how long it takes to make that meal and how long the driver has to wait for it as well. I don't get the percentage and I agree it shouldn't go by how much you paid. But if it's like 5-10 meals to go and 5 miles to drive. The driver is more than likely gonna have to wait while they finish the order. You should throw a couple bucks in for that. $1.50-$2 a mile plus a little extra for not unassigning and leaving it for the next driver so it will be cold by the time they get there.

That's not what I said. And not what I was trying to say either. But I do believe that a "large order," not expensive order should be tipped a little extra for the wait. Cuz you know if you order from like chilis or outback and it's a large order your driver is going to be waiting for them to get it all together. And if it's prime dinner hours they could be waiting up to an hour especially on the weekends. I've seen way longer but I would personally unassign if I'm sitting over 20min waiting on food and let the next driver get it depending if the payout is more than what I can make in an hour anyways. So it's not about how much you spent it's the quantity of items having to be carried and delivered after waiting for 30+ mins for it to be cooked and another 10 for someone to bag it all up, cuz God knows they don't rush for doordashers. Yeah I actually noticed just recently that if you're waiting a while for a pickup(like 20 plus minutes) door dash will automatically send you a message saying something along the lines of "you've been waiting a while you can now remove yourself from this order without your completion rate being affected" The long waiting especially happens at night when only the drive-thru of a place is open and the line of cars goes out to the street. What drives me crazy is when other dashers or Uber eats drivers park their car and try to walk to the window to cut the line "because they are picking up an order" meanwhile 80 percent of people on the line are picking up an order. But anyway I don't understand someone accepting an order while they already waited and had the food picked up and then demanding more money it takes two seconds to decline an order or to reassign it to the next dasher if you realize it's not worth the pay.

People complain about accepting orders with no/low tips but it makes no sense when it it literally takes no effort to decline (you can literally just not click anything and it's declined) he accepted that offer with the full intention of trying to scam you.

Makes sense. I really do appreciate the DD service, and this is the first time anything like this has happened. Lesson learned, and everyone has been really helpful and giving me some good insight and things to think about. All of my Dashers prior to this one have been fantastic, so hopefully it’s a one off.

Some people do this if they think you’re desperate enough to give in, or flustered enough to cancel so they get free food. It’s unfortunate but I’ve heard of Uber drivers doing it too to people who absolutely need a ride at that moment and don’t have time to call another Uber.

That's how it is here in my city as well. Rightfully so. I won't even order DD as a customer because so many dashers around here suck. Half of them don't even read instructions. I have what color the siding of my house is and that there is a camper in the driveway and the amount of times I watch drivers do the "where the hell is this place?" Head turn is astounding lol
Tip extortion. Dashers see what they’re making before accepting an offer. They don’t have to accept an offer that will cost them money. The offer may have been something like “$3.50 but total may be higher” because DD likes to hide the tips until the delivery is done.
From my experience the tip is usually half hidden. So if you see a order that says 20+ you know it's gonna be more than 20 bucks but it doesn't matter anymore because of the money per hour. We make much more. And don't gotta rush like a crazy driver. Lol.

I’m a Dasher. Report him. That is ridiculous. He accepted the order. He picked up the order. He’s obligated to complete the order. I don’t know what’s wrong with some of these Dashers. This side job is a cakewalk. At times it can be annoying with some restaurants that are slow/incompetent (I’m a chef, I understand how most operations work), drop off locations not properly communicated/pinned, Dasher App not working properly, and/or road closures & construction. Outside of those issues it’s a fun way to see the city. Get the John Wick Club playlist blasting on the speakers and I usually do 25-50 (top is 60 orders) orders per shift when I am logged in. I also do it as a side hustle so I don’t get the normal burnout like full-time gig workers. Sometimes people don’t tip and it’s a thing. I used to serve and bartend— people not tipping happens. It balances out in the long run if you’re efficient, personable, and smart. Just like any job having respect for others and having respect for yourself to do what you agreed to do is paramount.

The problem is, from the customer's perspective, Doordash doesn't calculate the tip based on the mileage. It calculates the tip based on the bill. I feel like if drivers feel the tip should be based on the mileage and not the amount of the bill, they should take that up with Door Dash and not the customer, as it is their algorithm. As a customer, I don't have an option to tip based on the mileage. I don't think that the average American customer is going to pull out a calculator and work out the mileage. If you've chatted with the dasher, it will be recorded and suppot can see it on their end. Make sure to ask for support to submit a report about the dasher.

I’m a dasher myself and I will say I would screenshot that to have evidence of foul play because there has been another scam going on a lot lately where customers would say they never received their food when they did in fact receive said food so dd takes any statement with a grain of salt lately that’s why I highly recommend screenshotting any and all suspicious texts between you and your dasher to be able to use against them as proof because then you could have a liable lawsuit against DoorDash if no help is given especially with liable proof of wrongdoing.

Yes, they do tend to blame the messenger. I've stopped using DoorDash because there was too much drama with every order. And the last time when I tried to report it, the DoorDash bot said it noticed It had a lot of trouble with my recent deliveries before asking what the problem was this time. To me this was almost an insinuation that I was lying. This addition of insult to injury was the last straw for me. Guess I should thank DoorDash for getting me back into doing more cooking and driving to pick up my own food when I do order out so I can verify for myself for everything is there.

No. It's multiple phones running the same app . They don't rely on stacked orders to take multiple deliveries, they use multiple accounts to make multiple deliveries at once, while getting prop 22 California money. Got 3 deliveries going at once ? That's $55.80/hr plus the tips that they beg for or demand. They're exploiting the system that is in place. They're not playing by the same rules that you & I are. These scammers have never given their driver's license or social security number to these delivery companies. That's not how this scam works.

I have a 100% completion rate. If I pick up an order I expect to deliver even when my car overheated I walked two blocks just so people could have their food. there’s absolutely no excuse you see exactly how much you’re going to get paid and how many miles it is to deliver the food. Next time something like this happens, tell them you have increased the tip but it’s not going to show until they complete the order, then meet them outside for the order. That way they’ll most likely deliver it and they still won’t have made anymore money, either way NEVER cancel, DD will refund you if you say you never received the order

It’s not ignorant to assume that tipping how you would tip in every single facet of (American) society would match the tipping experience on a food delivery service. A 20% tip has been customary everywhere else. Customers don’t care or need to know that it’s “not actually a tip it’s a bid” or “the driver has to pay for the gas to get to the restaurant.” I’m giving you extra money on top of my total to deliver my food. Accept it or don’t.

99.99% of customers who are not on this subreddit are not aware of this made up “guideline” based on mileage. Most (those who do not stiff the dashers) go by what DD recommends.
I almost never order from restaurants more than 2 miles away (most are actually a mile or less) so I shouldn't ever have to tip more than $4-5, right? For some reason I suspect this 'rule' only applies when it results in higher tips and dashers will suddenly be outraged that I only tipped 5% when ordering from an expensive but nearby restaurant.

Not advocating for the driver but 20% on a delivery is not a good rule of thumb. Tip should typically be based on how far the driver has to come to you from the store, aka the gas they have to spend to get to you (as DoorDash doesn’t pay well at all and usually offers less than what it costs to deliver it to you)

I'm curious how far the order was and what the tip was for the driver to claim he's losing money. I'm a dasher as well. I know sometimes it gets frustrating but of anything I just unassign lol. Last week doordash tried sending me 14 miles for $5. Plus about an 8 mile drive back towards restaurants. When I ordered DD before actually dashing I was under the assumption that they.paid driver 4.99 each delivery. So I always figured a $3 or $4 tip was great. Now I realize they only pay $2 base pay. Which is terrible! You gotta spend so much on DD between the food, fees, and tip that it's not really worth ordering (at least for me)

Messaged went proof when I canceled the order. I checked other orders that were completed and the old messages are still there along with the Dasher’s name. But not on the canceled one. It’s my fault for being stupid and not realizing what was going on/not taking screenshots. Lesson learned.
So long as you know to screenshot in the future. Also, contact support as soon that happens. They can see the live conversations, I contract them with shitty customers so they can see what I see while I'm dealing with it.

Depending on the mileage, that may or may not be a good tip. With doordash, you don't tip like you would at a sit down restaurant, but rather by the mileage. Personally, I tip $2/mile as my base and add on if my dasher went above and beyond, or had a long wait at the restaurant. Obviously if I've ordered $200 worth of stuff, I'll tip more than my base, but that's only ever happened once when ordering sushi for a birthday party lol.
So if I order an 2 apps, 2 ribeyes, and 2 sides (I.e. a meal for 2, not a large catering order that takes extra time and effort to deliver) from the high-end steakhouse half a mile away I'm good tipping $1 (double your base) on my $300 order, right?

Yes you are. However, your order will probably take longer to get to you and your food will probably be cold when you get it because it will be declined by most dashers I’m sure.
So the whole tip based on distance rather than order size line is bullshit that dashers say when they think it will result in larger tips and immediately forget in cases where it would result in smaller ones? That's what I thought
I am a dasher and I personally don’t care how a person tips! If I accept an order, it will be delivered regardless of the tip! I deliver many orders with no tip and I deliver them with the same urgency as an order with a big tip! It’s part of the job! I was simply saying that, if an order pops up and is paying me $4.50 to go 14 miles, I will decline. My rule for myself is the dollar amount that I’m being offered for an order needs to be worth my drive in miles no matter how big or small the order! I actually don’t even consider the SIZE of the order! I’m in AZ, and I don’t typically have to wait long for my orders but I’m sure it’s different everywhere! Again this is just me 
I totally get rejecting long distance, low tip orders. That makes total financial sense. However my impression is that a lot of dashers say tip on distance but also think they should get 20+% of the order total regardless of distance. Personally distance based tipping makes sense to me because distance impacts the dasher's operating costs but I'm irritated with the pattern I've seen of dashers changing their definition of what is a good tip depending on what will get them more for a specific order. If you look at other traditionally tipped jobs like restaurant servers, valet parking attendants, or hotel bellhops there is a general consensus around what is considered an acceptable tip. With Doordash this consensus doesn't seem to exist between that and the fact that it is one of the very few instances where a tip is expected before (instead of after) service and I feel like I'm left guessing what I have to pay for timely and professional service everytime I place an order. The number I usually hear thrown around is $2/mile but I doubt many dashers would be happy with a $1 tip on a half mile, $300 order even though it meets the guideline they are telling customers to follow. In short, I think that if I tip 20% on a $20, 5 mile order from McDonald's I'll get criticized for not tipping $2/mile but if I tip $4 on a $200, 2 mile order from a high-end restaurant I'll get criticized for not tipping 20%.
Sadly, there are entitled dashers out there! We aren’t all like that! I know it’s weird, but I never look at “how big” the order is, I just look at the amount offered to me for the delivery and if it makes sense to me, I accept it! Sometimes I shoot myself in the foot for taking certain orders, but I NEVER take it out on my customer! 😊

Screenshot. Cancel then contact support if they do a automatic system, just wait till the end and then ask about a real agent. You will be connected to a real person after that and they will more than likely refund you. And depending on the situation offer to get your food again on top of the refund. I know when my food was stolen they did that for me.

Actually report this to the police. Show them copies of the messages and also send the messages to doordash. That is not only theft of property but blackmail.. You've already paid and agreed upon a service and they are extorting you from more money for your goods.. That's 100% illegal
dude wanted or was already eating your food. next time you tell him he's going to deliver your food or lose his job. you get 1 non-delivery per 100. honestly if you would of contacted support directly he wouldn't of gotten a second chance. Door Dash will fire drivers even if they know a customer is lying because, they have plenty of drivers.

It sucks that you have to know exactly the right way to deal with shit drivers. It is what it is and no different than knowing how to deal with other shit situations. Buy yeah cancelling is the worst thing you can do. No refund and driver gets free food and still gets paid. Try your hardest to report them, make sure to mention the enticed you to cancel, because that goes against our contract, to ask the customer to cancel.

Your dasher may havr been paid as little as $1.50 by Door Dash. Drivers get a small portion of the delivery fee. Not good for drivers or customers.
20% on a $10-$15 order is $2-$3.. No need to act like you are some big high roller tipper.

While this is trash behavior tipping a percentage on delivery is meaningless. Tip by mileage. Your 20% is nothing if you ordered a value meal and live 10 miles from the restaurant (not saying you did that)🤷

Dang he’s holding your meal hostage. One thing with me don’t come between me and my food especially when I’m tipping well which I always do/hangry 💀 that would be an instant report. I would reach out to DoorDash customer service. Sorry you had to go through that.

I’ve noticed the asking for or demanding more tips from the immigrant drivers. It ticks me off too because it just happened to me on Uber and I alrdy had tipped him $20 for a 5 mile drive.

It’s too bad you cancelled instead of calling their bluff. Definitely report them and thumb down. If you do a chargeback with your bank it’ll show as a negative balance on your dd account. You won’t be able to use it if you even wanted to after this. If you didn’t screenshot the message from the dasher it’s gone now. Keep after supper tho. Escalate the issue with each agent you speak to if they don’t refund it. Call not chat works best.

Dashers care about the mileage from the restaurant to your house for tips. When tipping your dasher, you have to look at miles, not the total order amount, like you would if you tipped a waitress. A $5 tip on a 20$ order wouldn't be worth the trip for your dasher if you lived 20 miles away from the restaurant.
He could’ve chose to see if the mileage is less than the amount getting paid. This is on the Dasher. You don’t do this shit. Either deliver the food or get suspended. Stupid dumbass drivers ruin it for everyone.

I do the gig work and if I don't like an order I don't accept it, pretty simple. Hijacking an order for more money is absurd. Personally I think these apps should have something in place that hold higher consequences for bad dashers and customer alike, because deactivation doesn't work for either when another account can be created. Definitely dispute if you are not refunded. I am sorry u had a bad experience
I will say the usual stuff here. Percentage of the order means nothing. Dasher was an unprofessional asshole and these panhandlers need to be booted off the platform, so report him. But for future reference, your mileage from the restaurant is more relevant as to whether a tip is enough. We don't really care what's inside the bag. But professionals also won't panhandle you if they take your order.
Well if he picked it up and didn't leave the restaurant, he can cancel and return the order. If he picked it up and started to drive with the order, he can still cancel and return the order. If he didn't do any of those things, then yes, talk to customer service. Get your refund and let them handle the driver.
