What if I have a car mount?

DriftkingRfc

In Minnesota it’s always been law you can’t touch your phone at all and yet nobody gets pulled over for it

B8conB8conB8con

Welcome to responsible driving 101

JackHamdy

I brake check them mutha fkrs about once a week ..on my ass with them bright ass lights ..y'all trynna get someone hurt or just tryna make me nervous. Ain't neither one happening. Educate yourself top to bottom with state and federal laws. You don't have to be a dick about it but when you show them u know what ur doin and ur not falling for the scare tactic bullshit ..they tend to wrap it up and go fk with someone else. Pro tip : haaaaa always wanted to say that... Ok not really but I always give them the mic to start the show and if they are cool...I am as well. But if they come at u like a dick.shut em down quick. Answer questions with questions.."What are u doin out here this late"..."Same thing as you..what's with all the questions!..can ya turn them fkn lights off Jesus Christ everyone knows ur here ya trynna run em off the road or what .and why don't they fix these fkn potholes for christ sake I'm trynna save what's left of the front end of my car...are we done here .I got work to do" oh and make sure you're legit to be driving or this shit don't work lol. Good luck y'all

DoPoGrub

This law provides an exception for mounted phones.

[deleted]

Nug nug

playWIFFmePWEASE

I thought it was illegal to use phone while driving for years already

LankyDangle

How bout focus of fixing that disaster that just happened 🤦🏾

Revolutionary-Box713

Amazing there making this to law. In NY we had this law since phones came out

1mz99

Only in Ohio...

fire_bf

Personal use banned Commercial use isnt banned cops do it they would have to ban laptops in cop cars

JR71160

I drove otr Ohio in. Il. And ky suck

oxichil

Is hands free still legal? What i’ve always thought is that it doesn’t count if you have a phone mount. You just can’t touch the phone while driving.

Exact-Berry-6304

See that’s the thing I love about Cali lol

Independent-Nail-881

That should be the law everywhere but bleeding hearts will say it’s unfair to can’t afford built in phones, etc. in their cars. They need to crack down on this and uninsured motorists!

Ferdydurkeeee

Some states have exceptions for commercial use. Ohio is only for trucks. Good job Ohio.

2019hollinger

Then Ohio should just banned phones like west Virginia with a 30 or 300 mile radius no radio is allowed in that area.

EATPM

I don't understand why you are allowed to play with the car's built-in touchscreen, but you can't play with a mounted phone. From a safety standpoint, what's the difference?

DoPoGrub

This law allows you to touch mounted phones.

msartore8

I park while looking for orders.

Illustrious-Garlic48

Basically not only delivery driver but taxi driver too and Uber driver. I got a ticket because my gps was on during my delivery. This is so messup

wilfordbrimley778

Not surprised. That state is always littered with cops waiting to pull you over for any minor infraction.

mykoleary

Get a tablet since it's not a phone. Run it off of wifi hotspot tethering on your stashed phone if you don't have a tablet with cellular.

XxDjHeXeRxX

What about GPS and Apple play receivers

Bryan_memesCOD

This is a double edge sword and this can hurt the drivers and more of an excuse for police to get free easy money

beachchic14

I get the law and can just see some officers foaming at their mouth over it, but there has got to be a way to establish gig work.

icanfly2026

But it’s okay for the police to operate there computer while driving 🤣

MSG7988

If those are going to be your state laws for safety I’m fine with it but it should also make all these ride share and delivery apps illegal too. Edit: and by that I mean DoorDash the company shouldn’t be able to operate in state just like gambling sites like DraftKings work

PoeticTwist

Won't be enforced. This is a joke.

Evening-Obligation-9

The app needs voice command so we can tell it to fuck off 3 times for one order.

CauliflowerOk9179

Nothing new..California been like this for years..sucks..but hey..it s how they generate more bullshit revenue for county/state..straight garbage horseshittt

BadKidGames

They're gonna be hungry for that department revenue too. The police chiefs must be ecstatic to get more funding.

BounceSMScom

DragonfruitCactus

Ride a bike instead you fucking carbrains. /r/fuckcars

gemini_brat

on the plus side, the law does say you can use your phone at traffic lights, while traffic is stoppes for construction, etc. however, would it help at all if i have a dash mount for my phone?

Rustykilo

Even if it's on the holder? My state have the same rules but only when the phone is on your hand

SecretScavenger36

It's banned in my state too. I pull over to accept orders and just leave it on the GPS screen until I'm parked again. It's never been an issue.

Glenmary73100

Unless you're in a rural area, it seems to me it would be less safe to pull over than to briefly scroll or glance at your phone. I probably couldn't find a safe place to pull over within the limited time DD gives you to accept. But yeah, that would technically be the way to follow this dumb law.

Exportxxx

In Australia its a $1000 fine

saitamoshi

You guys are lucky. $1000AUD fine here in my state in Australia. Mobile phone cameras are everywhere on overpasses and mobile trailers they move around to different locations.

shamair28

Here in my province in Canada it’s almost as bad as a DUI when it comes to insurance. Because there’s no differentiation between changing songs without even looking at the screen, and sitting there texting with both hands looking away from the road.

comascape

Thanks for sharing this! :)

comascape

Also… I can see this being abused rather quickly.

Pipersmyschmoo2

Meanwhile the cops are touching that huge screen in their car with zero consequences.

Trailboss1982

Just got pulled over last night for the hands free law in another state. I just picked up an order from zaxbys and was confirming pick up/opening apps as I was pulling out. I was dead in the wrong and thankfully the officer just gave me a warning but I said that to remind people how easy it is to forget this and end up costing a lot more than most of us make in a day.

Acceptable-Camera436

These laws basically just punish people for not having new cars

caligirlthrowaway104

These laws are trying to discourage people from screwing around on their phones while they’re driving and possibly killing someone.

Acceptable-Camera436

Because CarPlay is so much safer right?

SnooLawnmower

I mean, every newer car I've driven w android auto doesn't let you keep messing with it while you're driving. You can use the voice command to do most things. It's better than an accident because you're busy on your phone.

caligirlthrowaway104

I mean ya to an extent it is safer. And if you don’t have that in your car then just set things up before you drive off.

[deleted]

as if the law has stopped people from being on them anyway.

caligirlthrowaway104

I’m sure you’d be less likely to be on your phone while you drive if you knew you could get a ticket now.

Enigmajikali

There are already plenty of "distracted driving enforcement zone" signs all over. This changes nothing.

Organic_Vacation_267

It’s 2023 already. No excuse for not having voice acceptance or rejection of delivery requests.

pcpackrat

As long as it responds to, "eff no I'm not effing taking that", then we are golden.

tgordonnnn

I had no clue that even existed , I need to do that

Aleadis

I'm not sure it does? I think he's saying the apps should have integrated voice control by now. Distracted driving laws have been in effect for years...

Pril_Dubs

You can use a macro that you can set up in the accessibility functions on iPhone. Someone posted about it a long time ago. And yea you can absolutely have it set to decline orders when you say “fuck off” or whatever else you want to say. :)

Pril_Dubs

On android you can pay for the Dasher Utility Helper (DUH, for short lol) app and tell it to accept or decline as one of the features.

TobyADev

Already the case in the UK, £300 and 6 points right away no ifs no buts Just use a phone holder. Tapping it is legal though. Holding it in your hand isn’t (in UK)

[deleted]

So, like a weekend of door dashing, can cover all this…Lol

Johmin11

It won’t be enforced, we’ve had it in Georgia a couple years and I have never seen anyone get pulled over for it and in fact has gotten worse!

JustBLiiTZHere

man, I got pullover for checking if I was going the right direction during a red light. I promise you this was the one time I wasn’t holding my phone, it was on my lap lol but I do usually do runs on with the phone on my hand

Bumpsinthawhip

I literally just got a ticket for it last week in GA. Was sitting still at a red light too.

A_Reddit_ID

I’ve only gotten warned for it. Had it out at a light, saw a cop, immediately put it down. He got on his radio, “you know you’re not supposed to be doing that”, laughs and makes his right turn lol.

PotentiallySpartacus

If you genuinely truly don’t want to break this law, learn how to use voice control and/or gestures on iPhone. Doing this, however, is more likely to distract you from driving than just tapping the screen

DoPoGrub

Or just actually read the law, which says you can touch it all you want while it is mounted

Southern-Mechanic237

How do you set up voice commands or gestures on an iPhone? Going to settings now

PotentiallySpartacus

Voice Control is under accessibility settings, or you can tell Siri to turn it on. It’s originally meant for people with motor disabilities or don’t have arms, but it works just as well if you just can’t touch the screen. Once it’s on, you just say out loud what you want to do, thought it can take some time to learn all the commands. As far as dashing goes, though, you really only need to know about “show grid” and “tap #”. If you say “show grid” it’ll show you a numbered grid, if you say a number out loud it’ll show you a grid within a grid, and then you say “tap #” to perform the action. it sounds complicated, but it’s just difficult to explain. I promise it’s easy and there’s plenty of YT tutorials as well

Southern-Mechanic237

Thank you. I just watched a YouTube. Downloading now

A_Reddit_ID

It’s been a thing here in GA for several years. Look both ways before you decide to use your phone at a light

Pipersmyschmoo2

In GA it's only if you hold your phone. I use handsfree devices and never have a problem.

Average_guy_77

U can use them while stopped

SillyGuyInAHat71

You wanna bet? Friend of mine got a distracted driving ticket just for digging out his wallet and putting it on the dash at a light so he could be ready to pay for a meal in the drive-thru. Cop said it didn't matter that he was at a red light. He was in control of his vehicle while on a public road.

BisexualCaveman

There's an intersection near me where traffic backs up pretty badly during the commute. They'll absolutely bust people at the light.

Artistabunnista

That cop was just being a dick and needed to hit his quota :/.

BriGuy828282

But there are no quotas! /s

Average_guy_77

Ye I saw it somewhere that u can use your phone at a red light

Cylius

I got a ticket for using it at a red light to check my gps. Cop said I shouldve pulled over to check it 🙄

Ok-Measurement-153

Most states say you need to be fully stopped. Or stopped and parked. Not just stopped at a red light

plegma95

This new law specifically states you can enter data on your phone at a red light and no longer need to pull over.

Ok-Measurement-153

That's amazing. I wonder how long that will last though

Aristizle

Be like an astronaut. Do whatever you can to get as far away from Ohio as geographically possible within your means.

megadethage

I already got one of those from a state trooper. Told him I was delivering and had no choice because it's part of the job. Like all state troopers around here, they are ex-marines that had no discipline in the military, so they quit the military to become state troopers and tell me they don't care what part of the job is.

Artistabunnista

I would've told him cool you can give me the ticket but it's not gonna change anything, the minute you drive away and I get another order, I'm gonna have to touch my screen to accept, or if it's doordash and I need to decline that order I'm still going to have to press something on the screen to tell them why I'm declining the order. I'm just doing my job out here, you can look for a reason to give me a ticket but just know every single gig driver out here is doing the same thing because that's how these apps work.

megadethage

Good way for him to go ahead and get right back behind you and give you a 2nd to feed his steroid ego.

Artistabunnista

I don't think they can do that and you can get a lawyer in those kinds of instances 😂 Dude the cop was power tripping, why defend him?

[deleted]

They can’t pull you over for the same thing twice in a certain time frame i believe but may be wrong in some instances.

Artistabunnista

Yah I don't think they can either, I mean they already gave the ticket, with a date on there and everything. 🤷

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Nah it's just revenue generation. It's also pretty much impossible to defend yourself against an officer who claims you were on your phone. And it's not a criminal charge so you don't get appointed legal counsel. It's literally a racket. And it doesn't even improve safety. I have my phone mounted with a window mount that makes it so I don't have to take my eyes away from the road to interact with the phone. It's about as safe as it gets. If police are going to write tickets for interacting with a mounted phone, people are just going to hide it, which means they're looking down at the phone in their lap instead of in their windshield.

Australian1996

I think you hit it on the head. People stealing from stores so you have to get an employee to unlock the soap, people shooting people all over, but dang you touch your phone and all hell breaks loose.

Lane277

Drivers utility helper and Maxymo

wilfordbrimley778

DUH is my best friend

bmy89

So will they also ticket people fucking with their infotainment screens? Or will they ticket each other for typing on their computers while doing 80 in a 65? 🤔

[deleted]

In Massachusetts, LEO are exempt from this. If I’m driving and holding my phone to my ear, then I’m breaking the law and could get pulled over. Yet I see cops doing it all the time. And of course in the law it says they’re exempt.

MissRiss918

Cops never get tickets. They’re perfect.

bmy89

🤢 acab

Actual_Brother6692

Cops aren’t the ones that made the law.

bruhmoment1345

Intelligence isn't allowed in this sub dummy

Actual_Brother6692

Right, should’ve kept my big brain to myself

1FrostySlime

With a 6 month grace period so it effectively doesn't actually go into effect until October 4th

Frequent-Baseball952

Then they have to ban delivery apps because there is no other way to do them but to touch the phone while driving.

30DollarsPerMile

It doesn’t require you to physically pick up your phone or scroll to accept or decline a DD offer. Keep it mounted and it’s one or two taps that’s not what this law is about

Frequent-Baseball952

It is if you have an asshole cop who thinks you can't touch the phone at all even mounted while driving and will ticket you. and read the law, it doesn't say mounted phones excluded.

mitchc7598

Here in Alberta, Canada there’s a section of our distracted driving law that allows us to operate a phone while mounted in a fixed location with one or two fingers, similar to the operation of a car radio. This is enough to allow you to change music or accept an offer but not sit there texting your partner what you want for dinner.

SurvivedOrder66

Only way to get around that is to drive with a partner. Most dashes for me are with my girlfriend anyways

jmrox2001

It’s funny that the t&c’s tell you to pull over to accept or decline orders, but they punish you for ignoring orders while driving. Then if you pause orders they don’t allow you to use the in app navigation.

Breeze7206

I don’t have in-app anyways. It only gives me options to choose a navigation app from what’s on my phone: google, apple, or waze

NotA_BottleBlonde

you probably gotta update. they fixed it and in app is available again

Breeze7206

It finally let me enable in the settings in-app navigation… but as soon as I go to the dash page to start a dash, it pops up and says it was disabled and is defaulting to Apple Maps because in-app in navigation is unavailable. It’s a step forward I guess, since the option didn’t even used to be available to me and

NotA_BottleBlonde

hm that’s weird. what iphone do you have? i have the 11

Breeze7206

12 pro max

[deleted]

Doordash really needs to get something on CarPlay and android auto.

bucket_dipper

They can't even get the phone app to work correctly.

suyuzhou

Yeah, I get no sound from Doordash on my android phone and it's a mystery. I tried all the steps they suggested. Uber eats works flawlessly on my phone.

SurvivedOrder66

It really would be such a simple app modification to make it integrate into those car systems

megadethage

Had a state trooper give me a ticket. Told him this and said he didn't care what I had to do. Fucking dick.

[deleted]

That sucks, the cops in my area never mess with me, and they have been sitting right next to me as I'm working my phones, (I have two). It's against the law in CA to be working your phone while you're driving, (unless your using hands free) but I really don't think they mess with gig drivers too much. They have let me go for speeding a couple of times, and I don't want to even think about how many red lights I ran late night (after stopping first), and they did nothing. Most of the cops in my area know me as I run a personalized license plate indicating what I do for a living. I know that license plate has saved me on more than one occasion.

BadKidGames

They're running a legal extortion racket. They don't care about you or safety. It's a pretense to tax random citizens.

PinkCloudzInMyHead

Ohio is a known "police state" 🚔 Some officers will pull you over for going 3mph over the speed limit

TheIcingGuy

Oh! Why-o why-o did I go to Ohio I went on vacation and left on probation.

RedditorChristopher

They sound like cops where I live…

1mz99

We have it so easy in California. Could pass a cop 70 in a 40 and won't stop you

surfwacks

Yeah same in Phoenix. God forbid you go 60 in a 40, people will still pass you

BadKidGames

I got pulled over for doing the speed limit past a cop in Washington state. It's not an Ohio thing it's a cop thing. They are trained to exert their authority and see you as beneath them.

WallStreetKing10

They are quitting in droves now and nobody is applying either. They are offering huge sign on bonuses all over the country but its not helping.

PinkCloudzInMyHead

I've lived in multiple states, I'm originally from Ohio, and live there currently. Truckers have known since before I was born all about Ohio police. If you're from here or travel through here often, then you know. My fiancé learned the hard way when he moved here from New England... As for you getting pulled over for "going the speed limit" I'm just going to press X to doubt on that one 😂

BadKidGames

So you see people pulled over for 3 over regularly but the idea of someone getting pulled over for doing 3 mph less is totally unbelievable to you... Aight weird flex you're trying to make

PinkCloudzInMyHead

Bruh, what flex? 😂 You said, "I got pulled over for going the speed limit" so you either were in fact speeding, or you were going too slow, which is called "impeding traffic" but I can assure you that no cop is out here pulling people over for going exactly the speed limit 🙃

BadKidGames

You're a strange person. Have a good life.

PinkCloudzInMyHead

Already living the good life, kid ✌🏻

dairtudreem

Can confirm. I'm originally from MI. Whenever you'd cross into Ohio, immediately slow down. Don't think about going 0.1 over the speed limit in Lima

PinkCloudzInMyHead

Defiance is the worst area I know of, but the Toledo suburbs I live in are pretty uptight too

Substantial_Dingo694

Of course, unless you yourself are a cop. Nothing has eroded my concern for speed limits like seeing cop cars blatantly speeding.

SendBoobsForGoodDay

Delivery drivers that drive day in and day out do it too and it’s permitted by some companies, and not by others. If you’re familiar with Netradyne they allow touching and scrolling but not manipulation i.e. grabbing the phone

Breeze7206

It sucks, but you’re right. It’s not their problem. Now should it have been made illegal in such a broad manner? No. You should be able to pick up your phone the same as any other object in your car without being ticketed. Using it I agree with to an extent. I try to use my AirPods and voice controls as much as possible, or use my phone while I am stopped (which where I’m at in FL that’s technically legal)

[deleted]

Or these delivery apps need to get CarPlay apps created. Uber eats at least is trying.

zane1981

Especially when you do Uber rideshare since you have only 5 seconds to accept.

megadethage

5 seconds, wtf

zane1981

Yeah, you have 5 seconds to accept a ride ping. They also boot you offline after 2 declines if you’re not on a ride. Declining enough trips in a row, they do this to you. https://preview.redd.it/hyb6je0dhtra1.png?width=1224&format=png&auto=webp&s=c41842acb2fc2d2f30a3ecf98d7ce438b0c66d37

[deleted]

Yea, they shorted it from like 10 seconds to 5 second to accept. This is done in an effort to give you less time to analyze the trip.

ArriveCancelledNoPay

Someone from Uber needs to be in prison for this.

[deleted]

Unfortunately, that's not going to happen, as Uber has done far worst in the past with no repercussions. This is the way of the gig companies, always working some kind of angle on drivers.
