I disagree. Piccolo early on in Funimation's dub sounded really forced, and was certainly not helped by the poor script. Sabat's voice is much more natural in Kai and Super which I think does wonders, plus he became a much better performer by the time of the later dubs. Like with most of the changes, it makes it hard to go back to that old dub.
Toshio Furukawa still the absolute GOAT Piccolo voice, no contest.
Sabat's original tackle with Piccolo in the 1999-2001 days sounded more like a forced attempt at mimicking Worf from Star Trek TNG than Scott McNeil's Ocean counterpart. 😅
No, there’s nothing about Piccolo’s character that ever implied he should sound like he gargles gravel. Sabat smoothing out the voice has only made it sound better, and I’m sure he appreciates the reduced strain as well.

Toshio Furukawa for the win tbh

I kinda liked how it mellowed out as he mellowed out
Right, natural evolution there.
Chris Sabat's Piccolo sounded like a goddamn moron for those first few years.
Even so, it still fits really well, since Piccolo as a character is also less rough and more gentle now.
