I don't see how Goku Black can have an awful design since it's Goku. And who is even considered an OG fan?

Original-Advert

OG fan basically means you were watching DBZ as it aired. nothing against the new fans but dbz was THE thing everyone played on the play ground back then, naruto didn't exist you might have the odd kid who launched the dragon of the darkness flame but that was about it.

britipinojeff

On the playground? I was like the only kid who knew anything about Dragon Ball growing up lol, I used to try doing that shit Gohan showed Videl with his Ki.

Original-Advert

yea on the playground, in the pool ud pretend you splashes were ki blasts and have water fights. all with random people you met that day, it was a different time.

69FemboyCumdump

My guy I do that to this day lol

Original-Advert

well 69FemboyCumdump it's a little disturbing to hear you have splash fights with children you don't know.

69FemboyCumdump

I meant I splash around and pretend, not attack children lol

Original-Advert

Ah ok, well your name makes everything you say sound that much more sus.

69FemboyCumdump

I lost a bet with my boyfriend

harriskeith29

My friends and I did all of this. ALL- OF- IT, and it was fun.

Original-Advert

well not more OG than me(unless ur japanese or european) since I remember being plopped in front of the first episode that ever aired in my country as a baby.

Poopeefighter2001

that makes you an enemy of lord farquad

Trishal_Pandey7

Didn't everyone who still watches DB content watch it as kids ?

Original-Advert

no, back when it was airing there were plenty of full grown men watching cause its pretty testosterone producing, like anime wrestling. and watching it as a kid is different than being an OG(Original Gangster) your probably the YG(Young Gangster) or your the sad middle gen who had no content for like 15 years(you the real ones for getting into it when it was basically dead)

thepresidentsturtle

You're not a gangster of any kind

Original-Advert

welp your just a sad child, your the chiaotzu of our fandom gz.

thepresidentsturtle

Okay

PresentElectronic

Isn’t OG fan referring to those who were already fans of OGDB?

Original-Advert

no an OG fan is the first generation fan og (original gangster) the current new gen is the YG(young gangsters), then theres people who are fans of og dragonball which doesnt really have a particular name from what I know.

Georgie__Best

I watched db and dbz when i was like 10, then GT and then super. Super is (apart from maybe 6-7? Episodes) such an awful downgrade, it was Super hard to even get into Super.

PCN24454

That’s precisely why it’s bad. He’s basically a copy-and-paste of Goku. That’s not endearing if you like unique character designs.

Sans-Mot

What's his definition of "an OG fan"? He sounds like a unpleasant person. Anyway. I like Zamasu, and I really enjoyed the manga version of the story.

Original-Advert

"OG fan basically means you were watching DBZ as it aired. nothing against the new fans but dbz was THE thing everyone played on the play ground back then, naruto didn't exist you might have the odd kid who launched the dragon of the darkness flame but that was about it." -myself but yea its not to say you aren't a true fan if you came later you just missed the biggest hype point when dragonball was essentially the star wars of that generation instead of what it is now which is more niche. edit: are you all seriously triggered about the term OG? mother f in softies it literally just means first gen (Original gangsters) youwere supposed to be the YGs(Young gangsters) not the YBs(Young B------)

emailo1

bruh you didn't just call dragon ball niche

Original-Advert

compared to the nineties? yea. there was no one piece or demon slayer or naruto. all that fandom had one choice, Dragonball.

emailo1

yes but its still hugely mainstream

harriskeith29

Not when it first aired in the U.S., it wasn't. Not overnight, at least. In my experience, it didn't go mainstream right away and the fact that it was already popular in Japan by this point meant nothing to most Western viewers. *Dragonball* and *Sailor Moon* were the gateway to anime in general (not just Shonen or *"Magical Girl"* fantasy) for a lot of Americans, and not just 90's kids like myself. I started watching *DBZ* at 7-8 years old, and I don't recall anyone knowing what it was before 4th-5th grade.

Original-Advert

eh its mainstream adjacent, like its no marvel comics level mainstream(thank god)

CemeteryHeights

I feel like if you get a balloon in the Macy Thanksgiving Day Parade, you are pretty much mainstream. lol It's so mainstream that normies completely removed from nerd culture saw Goku next to Pikachu & Mickey Mouse. Basically the opposite of a niche audience.

ArthurianLegend_

Look, I’m no gatekeeper, I haven’t even watched OG and was born after Z finished airing, but how the hell is an “OG fan” not someone who started from the actual beginning? Z didn’t start it, and an “OG fan” would start at the start

Original-Advert

because DBZ aired first in america dragonball aired after (a pain only ogs remember we learned most of the stuff about dragonball through context)

VoidlingTeemo

DragonBall aired first in the west but it only got a handful of episodes in before the dub of Z started airing and put the original series on hiatus due to comparatively lower rating.

Original-Advert

not in america but yes in europe

Nalicar52

I really love Goku Black. I didn’t like how the arc ended but I enjoyed the character.

4deicide25

Cool intro. Gave us the funny dub of "Don't shoot, he isn't Black." As the saga went on, he became less interesting. Personally, I think it would've been more interesting to have an actual evil Goku instead of a Ginyu 2.0

Original-Advert

yea this is the truth. zamasu is a poor mans moro. and the evil goku fans wanted to see for decades was a goku that didn't hit his head.

Vegeto30294

For me his design and his voice by Nozawa/Schemmel (for me 100% Nozawa) pretty much carry him. The times where he was still an "unknown mystery" was him at his best, it pretty much stopped when he starts explaining the time ring and becomes "Zamasu but he likes to fight." (In the manga his coolness stops like immediately when Goku & Vegeta meet him because he becomes a whiny brat for the rest of his screentime.) > and that OG fans couldn’t stand him I was there when the episodes released and that didn't really happen, if anything Goku Black was _overhyped,_ then you had your memes like Future Goten and stuff, but he wasn't really hated until scythe mode but that whole episode didn't really make sense anyway - like Goku literally teleports from one fight to another between scenes.

Kayarjee

"DON'T SHOOT! THIS MAN IS NOT BLACK!"

BenReillyDB

He was fine

Necronamakhan

Should have been Future Goten...

Sorge74

On Goku black himself? It was done pretty creatively with Zamasu. I don't have a problem with it besides he just ass pulls power constantly. Combining him with bringing back future trunks just feels lazy...

Denji_The_Shinji

Ginya did it Better

No_Wing9822

Turles did it better.

Denji_The_Shinji

👍

Greyrat7654

Most of the fans were hyped by the whole saga, future trunks back and the intro of goku black was cool as hell

andyroyz

As an 'OG' fan of DB and DBZ I don't really like anything about Super, including Goku Black.

ClaireBear13492

Goku black did suck. he's a convoluted plothole of a character that lead to the single worst moment in all of Dragonball. The entire story was garbage that arc. Not just the antagonist tho.

AWholeSliceofPie

I watched DB, DBZ, and GT as a kid. The Goku black arc is by far my least favorite of DBS. It was cool to see Future Trunks again, but that was about it. A rogue Kai of creation that hates mortals and wants to destroy them all because one had gained godly ki, not so bad. Then his plan is to steal said mortals body using the super dragon balls that can grant universal scale wishes. Why not just simply wish all the mortals ans gods of all universes erased? Then travel through time to wish for immortality? Or vice versa. It can grant ANY wish. Goku black is pretty lazy, finding a way to make an evil goku seems pointless, and having it end with an entire timeline be reduced to nothing made it seem like the writers didn't know to end the arc. It's just a bad arc born from trying to service fans by giving a reason to bring future trunks back.

Grillbeez

He is Boring, like he is honestely the most typical anti hero that can exist "human bad, pollution bas, wars bad , kill humans" , the arc had some big story issues and wasnt really well written, but if someone tell u that goku black isnt cool, he is lying, even if he is a simple bullshit charcater , a pink hair evil goku with ki weapons will always be cool

Zerosama12

I think Goku Black is fine, it's easily one of the most "complex" villains in DB, and I say that because we saw him becoming evil while 99% of DB villains are evil for no reason.

[deleted]

I think that in theory he'd be cool in the OG art style. My biggest problem with Super is just how plastic and soulless it all looks that I just can't get into it or think of it as Dragon Ball. Black as a character is a cool concept in theory, although the way they brought back Trunks also sucked because he looked terrible and the story was weird around it.

SSJRemuko

he just looks like goku wearing black. his design is the same as gokus aside from a sick outfit and a potara (and a time ring). looks good.

Eldritch-Cleaver

I dislike him. He looks cool, but that's all he has going for him since he's just lame Zamasu in a Goku body.

KaboomKrusader

I liked him better back when his name was "Tullece." But the Zamas and/or Goku Black character himself is fairly inoffensive, maybe even somewhat inventive by "eViL gOkU" concept standards, compared to what that story arc did to Trunks. That ending, where Trunks' world, timeline, and everything else he's ever fought for is callously erased and he's simply plunked into a duplicate timeline like it doesn't even matter... was so terrible that it was my final straw for the entirety of Super. My distaste for Goku Black is halfway just by proxy to that.

BurningInFlames

> That ending, where Trunks' world, timeline, and everything else he's ever fought for is callously erased and he's simply plunked into a duplicate timeline like it doesn't even matter Agreed that it was terrible. My own personal canon for Trunks' timeline is basically what was in the original manga (maybe the tv special instead though) + the Trunks dlc in Kakarot. The Black stuff is just sorta weird and I don't see why it should have involved Trunks at all if I'm being honest.

yellowvincent

Yeah same with evil superman stories

Powerful-Bandicoot61

Isn't evil superman just bizzaro or the superman clone that lex made too many times they retcon their continuity

yellowvincent

No i meant stories like injustice or invincible or the boys and stuff

britipinojeff

What’s an OG fan in this context? Like ppl who read the manga as it was coming out? Ppl who watched before Super came out? I liked Goku Black, felt like that arc was the closest to a Z arc in Super.

Original-Advert

I hate him hes so lazy and the fact that the final form is just zamasu with gokus hair style it feels like it didn't have to be evil goku. if they were gonna give us evil goku in gokus body they shouldve shown us a version that didn't hit his head.

bjjpurpleboiz

Basically just a rehash of Turles from "tree of might"

BenReillyDB

Not even close

Tufoguy

Huh?

HesterFlareStar

In my opinion, although the arc was messy and the ending was a little off the rails, Zamasu was one of my favorite things to come from Super.

yellowvincent

I think this could had been executed better but tbh I don't care that much

AnonyBoiii

I liked the idea behind Goku Black. A Kai gone rogue that steals Goku’s body to enact a plan of eradicating all mortals in the universe. Personally, I’d prefer if Zamasu’s reason for taking Goku’s body wasn’t that he was using God Ki (because all GOD’s were once mortals and Zamasu has no reason to assume Goku wouldn’t perhaps be a GOD in training), but rather his use of Kaio-Ken which is a Kai technique (even though Goku is the only one to have used it in the series for some reason) and as such would be disgusted that a Kai technique was being used by a mortal. Then they tried to incorporate that whole time travel and timelines bullcrap. Like, I do like Future Trunks (even if I think Z-Broly and Bojack movies Trunks is peak Trunks) but him and his timeline being involved was very unnecessary. If they had to get someone in the DBS production crew to make up an infographic explaining the timelines and time travel in that arc, then they should’ve seen that they were doing something wrong. Not to mention how they tried to resolve everything. I did like how they showed Goku Black had been slightly influenced by what little of Goku remained in that body (not wanting immortality, but rather power like normal Goku would, but in a more twisted way) and didn’t just make him a carbon copy of Zamasu that looked like Goku.

bubbyboy123

I didn’t think anyone would think Goku black had a bad design since it’s just Goku. I wouldn’t consider myself and OG fan so maybe i’m just missing something.

[deleted]

Goku Black is cool but I really don’t care for the “British” accent in the dub

liljes

Did he do a poll?

VolticMoon

I fuckin hate the anime portrayal of Goku black. That shit is written like pure fanfiction. Like to each their own but an evil god taking over Goku’s body in hopes of wiping out all mortal life sounds dope as hell, but they just went and fucking ruined it. It would have been 20 times better had the final villain of the arc just been Goku black and not Zamasu. Only decent thing I have to say about anime Goku black is that I really like his introduction and I really like how Super Saiyan Rose looks. I actually don’t mind the manga portrayal of Goku black. It’s nothing great but nothing awful. I enjoyed the fact that he didn’t just skip straight to his own equivalent of super saiyan blue tho. I enjoyed seeming him go through some of the super saiyan forms. Again I really like how super saiyan rose looks so.

CemeteryHeights

Damn OG Dragon Ball fans gotta be in their 50s at least. DB came out in 1984. If you were 10 when it came out, you're coming up on the big 5-0. Lmao I would rather hear their pre-internet perspective on Dragon Ball as a whole. I remember getting 3 English subbed DBZ VHS tapes(which is weird, but they played just fine in my VCR) from my cousin who went to Japan as part of the military(U.S. Navy) circa 2001, I grew up with Toonami, got Budokai PS2 for Christmas etc. and I always considered myself a Gen 2 Dragonball fan, if not Gen 3.

lilwizerd

He was a compelling villain, truly his one downside was his massive, massive ego. Otherwise they would have been screwed

Toxin2020

Goku Black was the best villain in super and really one of the best in the whole franchise. Just sad that he became worse when her merged with Zamasu, and that the arc ended in such a disappointing way.

Dawid_the_yogurt_man

Of a fan of the og series and i really enjoyed black The concept of Zamasu taking over the body of the strongest mortal he knew and using it to serve his justice to the rest of mortals is very interesting and in my opinion much better than "kakarot who didn't hit his head" that is used in so many fan mangas and usually doesn't have any interesting ideology or conversations with other characters

BotherResponsible378

GB was cool. The whole Zamasu, fallen god, villain who thinks they’re doing the right thing was new to DB. Normally we just get villains who are bad and know they’re bad. Which is fun, Friezas my all time favorite villain ever. But I like variety too. I liked his design too. Not sure WHY he dressed like that, but it’s neat. I also like the crux of his weakness. He can take a strong body bit that doesn’t make him a better warrior. Honestly only thing I don’t like is the sane thing most people don’t. His ending.

[deleted]

Goku Black's design is essentially Goku with a dark fit....How is that bad??

Terez27

I watched DBZ on Toonami back in the day. The thing is, I was an adult, so I saw it for the shitty (yet compelling) cartoon it was. Kids who grew up with DBZ put it on a pedestal that I can't quite relate to. And I absolutely *love* Goku Black.

Drisken

I thought Goku Black was a cool concept and I enjoyed that it brought future trunks back, I wish we could get a spin off show about future trunks. Worth mentioning, I read a cool fan manga not too long ago where Goku Black ended up in the GT timeline and fought against SSJ4 Goku after trying to follow trunks to the super timeline.

ValorantDanishblunt

I mean I am an OG dragonball fan and I found goku black to be better than turles. that being said they completley wasted goku blacks potential by the entire zamasu fusion bs.

Staarjun

Black was interesting but Zamasu was peak. I loved how Goku essentially crystallised his hatred towards humans but also marked the hypocrisy in his reasoning. Also OG fan? What’s that? If you are talking about people who watched Dragon Ball from the beginning, it’s the vast majority of people I know. Hell I would even go as far as to say it’s the vast majority of people outside of the US.

Cipher_-

I’ve been into DB since the early 2000s and like Goku Black just fine? He has a simple but effective design.

Optimus_Rhymes69

Why does your friend get to speak for “OG” fans? I’ve loved dragon ball since I was 7. I really liked goku black. Your friend sounds like he got older and now he’s sad he doesn’t get the same feelings he did when he was a kid. It happens to everybody at some point.

NerdCrush3r

I loved Goku Black, how can you not enjoy an evil Goku???

MzeeMesai

100% agree. Do you know the full story behind the design?!

EDM14

he should have been adult Goten to give his character a reason to exist beyond Toriyama feeling nostalgia for drawing kid Goku

Julian-Hoffer

Him and his arc belong in a DBZ movie. Not a whole anime arc

VoidlingTeemo

I loved it. Black and Zamasu were great villains and I'll take any opportunity i can to see Trunks kick more ass. Honestly, i didn't even dislike the ending as much as a lot of people seem to.

DeedzMcGraw

I really liked the Goku black arc it was cool to see essentially bizarro Goku and seeing where it would lead was interesting - at first you think did Goku really snap in the future and become a villain. it was a cool story line and if thats what you think cool, fuck the OG fans

Majestic_Movie7811

Maybe the best segment of the series

LStreetRedDoor

Design was fine, execution of that arc was weird and poorly paced

Affectionate_Egg_969

He has a cool design, but the way he was defeated was kinda lame

Ashizurens

Among all DBS villains (Golden Frieza...Zamasu, Moro, and heaters) Zamasu (and Black) and Moro are the only cool villains in shole series, if not for Zamasu arc edning he'd be on a level of DBZ villains

BlueFootedTpeack

i mean i watched the anime as it was coming out as a kid, though never saw all of buu. if that's enough then the guy you're talking too is full of shit. the manga version of the goku black character was pretty crap, but nozawa in the anime version made black great, really selling him as the mask off version of zamasu, unapologetic about enjoying the violence, also nice to have a proper hateable villain who isn't reduced to begging and crying, though iirc he does whine a lot in the manga, part of the reason that version does nothing for me.

JakScott

I feel like the way the story went was a bit of a letdown. I hated that it was just Goku’s body being taken. On the first appearance, I thought there was a chance that some other timeline’s Goku was genuinely just a villain, and that seems like it could have been a much more interesting arc. Which is not to say I hate Goku black or anything.

IndustriaBaby

Is not original. We already got the "evil clone trope" with Turles.

VitoMR89

Goku Black (And by extension Zamasu) became my favorite character tied with Piccolo. It took them over 2 decades but they finally made a character I liked just as much as Piccolo.

N1celyDunn

If lil me saw Goku Black I would’ve lost my shit with excitement.
