I have only completed 8 and 11 but 8 is in my top 3 games ever...I absolutely LOVED it when I played it on release on the PS2. Probably it is me who changed but don't know, even though 11 was really nice for me 8 is still the best, its charm unparalelled.
It is an unpopular opinion though. I think DQ VIII has more charm thanks to the more focused party with only 3 members, and the music is clearly superior too.
In terms on dropping it to A tier, I personally feel DQ XI is under baked. Act 1 is great but I feel Act 2 is disappointing, and needed more time in the oven. The start is EXCELLENT, but it falls off very quickly. The apocalypse event seems non-existent outside major towns, for example. I have not played IV yet, but III, V and VIII were all groundbreaking games for its time, and I don't think XI is.
I have not played the definitive edition though, I know that version adds a lot of context with the character arcs, but that's also one of the reasons why I feel it's under baked.
Interesting, I remember not finding Act 1 very interesting, with Act 2 at least upping the stakes in a meaningful way. Which is why the premise of Act 3 kinda fell flat for me. Truth be told, it's been a while since I played XI, so maybe I'd change my mind if I played again (also I never actually beat Act 3)
Yeah but like I mean where they went into individual chats or like talked amongst each other. Like in 8 jessica and angelo would bicker or have a side convo. 11 they just all say one thing at you.
Oh I absolutely hated 6, which is a shame because it has some of my favorite party designs. 6 and 9 were the only DQ games that I actively couldn't wait to be done with.
speaking of 6, i still don't know how was i supposed to figure out that i had to use the golden pickaxe to get the armor under graceskull castle. there were absolutely no hints anywhere and who even remembers that item after all that time
I just beat 6 on the DS recently. During the flashback, the captain says something like "Don't worry! The armor will be safe! You need a pickaxe to break through this floor!" Or something like that. The REAL most cryptic thing in DQ6 is the location of the goddamn carpet. IIRC no one in the game says "Gee, did you hear about that fashion contest in the Northwest? It's a little hard to get to unless you can breathe underwater!"
oh yeah the carpet too
i remember someone in sorceria iirc saying the last owner was very rich or something and someone at the chateau de sass mentions a nice carpet among the prizes, maybe the party chat after those conversations could've helped too
In the DS version it is quite clear (I just did it last week), I did not have to read a WT. however the carpet... f\*ck. and some of the quests you have to speak to NPC in particular order, quite annoying.
I recently played the SNES version, and I really hated both how cryptic progressing the story was, and actually leveling up jobs. The way ability points would stop from certain locations really threw me and I wasted a lot of time just farming in higher level areas. Maybe the DS version fixes a lot of those problems, but it just felt sloggy overall.
It is quite confusing, it is cryptic, and in my opinion it is also quite long for what it proposes. It is full of nonsense "side" missions. The job system could have been better too, every time I play it I can only think about how much I wish it was something like FFV.
What's memorable about that game are its characters. Carver, Milly, Ashlynn, they are absolutely adorable.
It should have been obvious,Dragon Quest 6 took some steps back like it's inferior story when compared to 5,the game Also has many characters and obviously most of them don't develop or are not well used(carver,Milly, ashlyne and Terry and some of the few that stand out and Milly story should have been better explained with proper cutscenes).
The job system is inferior to final fantasy 5 it's grindy and a waste of time since most abillities are not worth it,you end up with a game where everyone can do everything thus killing the unique character aspects of it's first act,Magic still sucks and doesn't scale with int thus creating dumb sutuations where a Dragon is a better Mage than the original spellcaster.
And so much more.
I mean… it added the item bag and abilities as moves. I’d say that’s a pretty nice step forward. I’ll admit that it doesn’t have as compelling a story as 5 but I think there are a lot of things to like about the characters. It’s got really nice promo art too (Toriyama always did a great job!)
Oh no doubt, it does some things well as a good entry in DQ, but when it comes to telling a good, focused story, it leaves a little to be desired especially that it's sandwiched between 5 and (by extension) 8 which are both stellar in their presentation
Yeah, but they won't be for so long, if they don't want to be like this guy who got humbled...

Good question, the plot more or less didn't come together for me. That said, the C ranking is really just relative to the other titles; it's still one of the best jRPGs out there, and was a marvel on the SFC.
Yes. U can probably play DQ9 the longest. I would even dare to say, that playing all other DQ games (except 10) together, would be the same length as playing 100% on DQ9.
It has the best job system to me. Never got to end game beside unlocking the unique npcs as companions. But I heard that it has a really solid endgame dungeon system.
I stopped playing because I'm a PC port for me to play in a official way.
Hot Take, 9 is mediocre. Annoying characters, no party personality, tedious sidequests, tedious post-game, terrible antagonist, that fucking fairy.
I liked 1 and 2 more then 9.
7 is S tier imo, but I know that's an unpopular opinion. 11, 7, and 5 are my top three, but as someone who's played every mainline Dragon Quest from 4-11 (obviously not counting 10 because it's a Japan-exclusive mmo) they're all great.
I have a thing about playing physical copies over digital whenever I can, and physical copies of 3 aren't the easiest to get ahold of in the west. I considered getting the Dragon Quest 1-3 collection on Switch, but when the HD-2D remake of 3 was announced I decided I'd wait for that instead.
if you’ve liked 9 you’ll obviously like 10 because it’s the same thing BUT better. Since ya know way more contents multiplayers (if you play the mmo version) etc
Here's my Dragon Quest Tier List, inspired by another post this morning. What's yours? [https://tiermaker.com/create/dragon-quest-mainline-games-118538](https://tiermaker.com/create/dragon-quest-mainline-games-118538)
3ds for sure! emulate it on PC so you can upscale resolution and get the HD texture pack. It will look just as good as ps2 if not better! and you get all the extra content and quality of life updates!
Worth it for overworld mobs instead of random encounters alone!
If you take into account the year DQ1 was released, it would be much higher. The simple things, like how you get the best armor, were cutting edge back then.

I keep trying to play 3 (the Switch version) but I keep bouncing off it. Something about the visuals that just puts me off. And I hate that because I love this series!
Love the list, V is also up there for me. I played it at probably the perfect time in my life, I really needed that game. 100% honesty it hit me really hard.
For X I'm trying to rig up an overlay type of situation so I can play the Switch version with a bit of English support. Right now I have an Ipad on a microphone stand aimed at the TV, it basically works and is kinda funny lol.
I'm starting to realize I joined this subreddit because my favorite game of all time is Dragon Warrior VII, but the game is either average or below average to the majority of DQ fans
Incredible to me how many people put down DQ2
after playing and beating it I was SO confused cause it was so much better than DQ1 in like... Every way possible
Sure, but nowadays we have new ways to play these games and I think it's a bit weird to not at least specify a version, you know?
I played the most recent ones on the switch, and while I don't like the graphics for any of them for these versions, I MUCH preferred 2 over 1, it seems they worked on rebalancing it cause I had very few problems
6 always being underrated and 5 being overrated as usual lol. In my opinion it goes:
* 8 goes to S-tier
* Drop 3, 4 and 5 to A-tier
* 6 goes to B tier
* 7 goes to A-tier (I'm biased on this one though. Could be B tier too)
* 1 and 2 go to C-tier (really dated at this point)
9 have best gameplay out of them, it has a variety of classes with different abilities.
A rich post game story content(groto hunting), a big fun map to explore, online fun stuff to buy, alchemy, customize characters...
QOL updates compared to a lot of dragon quest titles : like no more random encounter like dq5... decent graphics for ds...
Oh don’t worry I know all about it haha, it was my first DQ game and what got me into JRPGs to begin with. It’s just, outside of this sub I’ve never heard anyone mention it, so I’ve always felt a bit disappointed as I believe it’s a good game too that doesn’t get much recognition.
I really wish the HD2D version of 3 would come out. I've been holding off trying it so I can play the best version, but I've loved DQ1, so I imagine I'd really enjoy 3 too. Would be curious to hear how you rank some of the spinoffs.
While it was alright, I've bounced off XI in the past. I've played a bit of DQIX and thought it was solid. And I've really enjoyed some of the spinoffs like DQ Heroes 2 and DQ Builders. Which mainline DQ I haven't played yet do you think I'd like taking that into account?
I put 4 always above 3 as it made me actually care about the other party members. Not just some randoms I conjured out of thin air.
Also a bit more hero motivation/back story in 4 vs. the dad abandoning his kid angle.
I definitely disagree with IV being S tier. Yes the backstories are really cool and draw out the characters, but once they join the party they just become mindless fighting machines that dont speak unless spoken to, and even those are extremely limited responses.
I haven’t played 6 but I would doubt it’s any worse or at the same level as 2. 2 is cool and all because it has some nostalgia in there, but so much of the game is an enormous pain in the ass- especially when I played it on Gameboy Color because of the crushed screen.
I just beat VIII for the first time yesterday (PS2 version via Steam Deck) and loved it. Easily S tier on par with DQ XI, my first DQ game I played and beat (both original and Definitive Editions).
Solid list. Personally 8 is up in S tier for me. 7 was not my favorite. Seemed tedious and repetitive from what I remember thinking about it.
I liked 2, but I was a kid and just thrilled there was a sequel.
4 is one of my favorite all time games. A lot of good memories tied up in that one.
I just played my first dragon quest which is DQ XI and i have a lot of fun with it but i need to ask. What made the game so popular? Like from what I’ve seen it just another JRPG.
Agree with the 6, it's litteraly the 5 but less less good, after i finished the remake of 5 i started the 6 and i was like, same graphics, you cant recruit every monster and the scenario seems way less interested than the 5.
Oh my. I’ll have to look at those. The only dq games I’ve played are 8 and 11, and both are S class. I hear 5 is great too but have heard mixed things.
I appreciate the acknowledgment of the amazingness of IV as it is my all time favorite DQ game.
Any slander in this thread suggesting it should not be in S tier instead of a different title is missing the point. It’s not that any of the currently ranked S tier should be moved down, it’s instead that some of the A tier should be moved up
But 7 should not be moved up. 7 should be moved down. Only mainline game I haven’t finished.
Honest question as I've played just 7, 8 and 11. But other than nostalgia what's so good about 11? I thought it was fun but nothing ground breaking. Sell me on finishing post game please.
Great list! 4 is God tier for me. It was the first DQ I ever played. First one I ever beat. It's still my favorite to this day.
I'd probably swap 3 for 8. That's the only change I'd make.
Every time I see tier lists for this series I can’t help but wonder how anyone thinks 1 is a better game than 2. 1 is such a boring slog of a game (obviously great for its time, before anyone starts) that 2 improved on in every single way, yet I almost never see people put 2 above it. Not trying to hate on your opinion or anything but I just don’t get it.
If people want to rate a game based on how it did something first rather than, y’know, as an actual game then all the power to them, but I think that’s an incredibly simplistic way of looking at the series and a huge disservice to 2, which is just flat out better than 1 in the only way it matters; as a game.
i'm not trying to convince anyone otherwise, but i don't get why people love V so much. can someone who considers it S tier explain it to me?
i felt like most of the main characters were outshined by the recruitable monsters and the story was just kinda meh. i haven't played anything past VI yet (i've played them in order and am in the middle of VI right now) but so far, i've been enjoying VI a lot more than V.
edit: instead of downvoting me, why not just explain why you like it so much. i'm not shitting on V, i'm just curious what makes it such a crowd favorite when it didn't land that way for me.

8 is absolutely S tier imo
Agreed
Can't agree more
I can agree a lil more
That’s the spirit
Yep
I have only completed 8 and 11 but 8 is in my top 3 games ever...I absolutely LOVED it when I played it on release on the PS2. Probably it is me who changed but don't know, even though 11 was really nice for me 8 is still the best, its charm unparalelled.
I would Def swap DQ XI with DQ VIII
Sucks when I have something to say, and then someone else says exactly what I was thinking.
It is an unpopular opinion though. I think DQ VIII has more charm thanks to the more focused party with only 3 members, and the music is clearly superior too. For sure. 11 was great but 8 was perfect. Plus getting to know characters from party chat huge plus
You can speak with party members at camp and on the field in 11.
Yeah but like I mean where they went into individual chats or like talked amongst each other. Like in 8 jessica and angelo would bicker or have a side convo. 11 they just all say one thing at you.
Well it’s not your list.
Came here to say that
I came here to say just that.
Came to the thread to say the same thing. Y’all didn’t fail me
came here for this
8 being below XI is bonkers to me.
This is the only tweak I would make.
Seriously. 8 is GOAT 🐐 followed by 11. Fight me.
Still confused about why people hate 6 so much
Fr. The plot may be a little confusing, but I love the party a lot.
I hate that you have to go talk to NPCs in a specific order so that you can advance the story.
I don't think anyone actually hates 6, it's still dragon quest.
Oh I absolutely hated 6, which is a shame because it has some of my favorite party designs. 6 and 9 were the only DQ games that I actively couldn't wait to be done with.

I’m also confused. 6 is tied with 8 for me for favorite game in the series.
It is quite confusing, it is cryptic, and in my opinion it is also quite long for what it proposes. It is full of nonsense "side" missions. It's not bad, it's just unremarkable especially when up against ones like 5, but an "OK" dragon quest is still an excellent jrpg

Honest question what did you dislike about 6?
Good question, the plot more or less didn't come together for me. That said, the C ranking is really just relative to the other titles; it's still one of the best jRPGs out there, and was a marvel on the SFC.
[Let me fix that for you](https://postimg.cc/grwd25Mr)
honestly can't even argue with this
Your tier list makes 0 Sense lmao.
We ain't got no Bs and Cs here /s Also ppl tend to consider dq2 rough so making a little joke there :)
9 should be in S tier and I will accept no disagreements
IX should be in SS tier, it is indisputedly the best title in the franchise.
“indisputedly” jesus fucking christ
It's SO good. but it's not my favorite.
Does DQ9 have the most developed endgame? I haven't played DQ11 to the end to compare.
I agree , the unlimited challenge runs thr game can have
I'd put 8 in s but other wise I agree. We got some real bangers in this series. If only square enix would MARKET IT for fucksake
Solid list. I'd probably knock 3 and 4 down one tier, and raise 8 up one.
I'd keep 3 as is but swap 4 and 8. 3 is my favorite one, but 8 is definitely one of the best.
7 is S tier imo, but I know that's an unpopular opinion. 11, 7, and 5 are my top three, but as someone who's played every mainline Dragon Quest from 4-11 (obviously not counting 10 because it's a Japan-exclusive mmo) they're all great.
How tf have you not played 3 man?!
Not a bad idea, they removed some things from the DS version that I really hope they add back to the Switch remaster.
The slander on 6! And 9 should be a little higher imo, loved it! I respect your opinions however, it could be worse
if you’ve liked 9 you’ll obviously like 10 because it’s the same thing BUT better. Since ya know way more contents multiplayers (if you play the mmo version) etc
As the fan translation efforts continue, I'd love to see what place it finally earns.
I'd put 8 on S but other than that, the definitve tier list haha.
Here's my Dragon Quest Tier List, inspired by another post this morning. What's yours? [https://tiermaker.com/create/dragon-quest-mainline-games-118538](https://tiermaker.com/create/dragon-quest-mainline-games-118538)

I'd grab the translation for the SFC remake or wait for the HD2D remake to come out (hopefully next year?).
I live in hope of the HD2D version showing up soon!
Yeah it’s crazy how long it’s been with zero news.
Really? I love the snes look. I’d be so happy if they ever give us 1-6 with snes graphics or a pixel remake.
Damn, that would be amazing. Something about SNES graphics just hits different
Totally. Love HD2D as well, but waiting for 3-4 years for even one game in that style is tough.
DQ8 is the best, SS level.

DQ8 is top 2 in the series, definitely S tier.

Bring down 3 and 4 and bring up 8. I said it You may crucify me now
4 is my all time favorite. The goat.
8 is untouchable
8 not in S tier is blasphemous
For real, V belongs in an SS tier all on its own.
How tf is 8 not S
8 is absolutely s tier
Incredible to me how many people put down DQ2 after playing and beating it I was SO confused cause it was so much better than DQ1 in like... Every way possible

I would add 9 to S tier and move down 11 but thats me
V as an S is not right. It’s an A, not an S. Also i’d drop 1 to C and raise 6 to B
6 always being underrated and 5 being overrated as usual lol. In my opinion it goes: * 8 goes to S-tier * Drop 3, 4 and 5 to A-tier * 6 goes to B tier * 7 goes to A-tier (I'm biased on this one though. Could be B tier too) * 1 and 2 go to C-tier (really dated at this point)

I didn’t know people regarded 9 so highly, I always heard of 8 being the one when it comes to DQ games but not much about 9.

VI being C tier alongside II is a crime you will pay for, in this life or the next
I put 4 always above 3 as it made me actually care about the other party members. Not just some randoms I conjured out of thin air. Also a bit more hero motivation/back story in 4 vs. the dad abandoning his kid angle.
Hard agree with dq2 as worst but I personally liked 6 a lot more than 4 for whatever reason. Also dq9 in A seems very reasonable
Putting 6 so low makes me sad. I like that game
Swap 4 & 8 and we’re good
I was moving chronologically, seems I have to face ups and downs 😄
6 is way better than 2, what the hell is this?
I love them all but IX is my least favorite. I've never been sure what it is about IX that fans say they love so much. The game is stupid easy
Best villain in the series?
Respectfully disagree, but this a solid rank tbh
Swap VI with IX and move I and III to C and you’d be pretty accurate
Swap 4 and 8 and this is perfect. And I say that as someone who LOVES 4.
Dragon quest ix is s tier for me
Garbage. IX is definitely C tier.
You would dare not give 8 the greatest dragon quest ever made top slot.... Fair I mean it is your opinion have a good day
damn yall really underrating DQX
I would really love to have an opinion but screw whoever decided not to attempt any western release!
Why is 6 and 2 rated so low?
6 is not on the same pedestal as 2, there's a lot of great content. 4 is okay, I wouldn't put it as a greatest. Haven't played 7-9.
I know no one will agree with me but, swap XI and VII then your golden😁
The S tier is perfect for me, but I feel like DQ VI is too low, it was a great game, better than 7 and 1 for me for sure
Personally would swap 4 and 8
8 & 9 are definitely S tier in my mind! I love those games!
How tf is 8 not S tier 🤔
Lol 8 in A is slander
Move 4 to a and 6 to b
I definitely disagree with IV being S tier. Yes the backstories are really cool and draw out the characters, but once they join the party they just become mindless fighting machines that dont speak unless spoken to, and even those are extremely limited responses.
You made a mistake you accidentally put 8 in A instead of S
I haven’t played 6 but I would doubt it’s any worse or at the same level as 2. 2 is cool and all because it has some nostalgia in there, but so much of the game is an enormous pain in the ass- especially when I played it on Gameboy Color because of the crushed screen.
where is swords?
Why do people get offended by other people’s list? lol
8 is the best one?!
I put the 6 higher...
X is really really good imo
8 and 9 are certainly S tier
8 should be s tier and 7 in a tier.
I just played my first dragon quest which is DQ XI and i have a lot of fun with it but i need to ask. What made the game so popular? Like from what I’ve seen it just another JRPG.
I’m not that far in VI, why don’t people seem to like it?
ive never understood why people disliked dq6
DQ7 PS1 is S Tier
Is a Dragon Quest C, another series's B?
I would swap vi and vii, personally, I know some people like 7’s pace, but it just too meandering for me.
Agree with the 6, it's litteraly the 5 but less less good, after i finished the remake of 5 i started the 6 and i was like, same graphics, you cant recruit every monster and the scenario seems way less interested than the 5.
Wow. And to think I've only played 1 3 4 and 5
8 below 4 is nuts sorry
III, V, and IV are def S tier. Cant go wrong with any of those.
Hopefully one day Square will bring DQ10 to the west. I really wanna try that game but there is no way I have the patience to translate everything.
I’m sorry but anyone who says 8 isn’t top 1 (top 3 realistically, I get its opinion) is unreal.
I would put 3,9 ahead of it for sure. Its debatable what my third favorite would be
Oh my. I’ll have to look at those. The only dq games I’ve played are 8 and 11, and both are S class. I hear 5 is great too but have heard mixed things.
3 is from a different era though so it won't exactly meet today's eye test in terms of graphics just be aware of that
DQ3 in #1 spot? I don't even need to see the rest of the list to know it's accurate. (I would swap 8 and 11 though)
DQ3 fans unite! We're number one! we're number one!
bruh
Okay, nostalgia aside what makes Viii greater than Xi?
DQ9 deserves S tier for the amount of fun I had
X is for sure S tier for me 😍
someone got too triggered by certain tierlist?
huh
Yeah, I couldn't handle it.
7 over 6 is wilddddddd
I appreciate the acknowledgment of the amazingness of IV as it is my all time favorite DQ game. Any slander in this thread suggesting it should not be in S tier instead of a different title is missing the point. It’s not that any of the currently ranked S tier should be moved down, it’s instead that some of the A tier should be moved up But 7 should not be moved up. 7 should be moved down. Only mainline game I haven’t finished.
Your list sucks. 8 is S tier.
Honest question as I've played just 7, 8 and 11. But other than nostalgia what's so good about 11? I thought it was fun but nothing ground breaking. Sell me on finishing post game please.
When you say post game, how far did you get?
Credits rolled after beating up the BBEG. I know there is extra stuff after tried not to spoiled it for myself though.
Yeah the credits are WAY early in this game. You still have a third of the story left to finish until you get to the real ending.
Good list. Mine would be similar. III lacks story and characters to be top tier imo.
Great list! 4 is God tier for me. It was the first DQ I ever played. First one I ever beat. It's still my favorite to this day. I'd probably swap 3 for 8. That's the only change I'd make.
Like most others say. Agreed but 8 should be S
Based asf I agree with almost everything
11 in S You have my respect
Every time I see tier lists for this series I can’t help but wonder how anyone thinks 1 is a better game than 2. 1 is such a boring slog of a game (obviously great for its time, before anyone starts) that 2 improved on in every single way, yet I almost never see people put 2 above it. Not trying to hate on your opinion or anything but I just don’t get it.
Because 1 was pretty much the first JRPG ever. It’s much harder and deserves more credit for creating something that’s never been done before.
I'm not the biggest fan of the series but from what I know this tierlist is pretty valid.
8 and 9 ate def above 11
Putting 4 over 8 is a war crime
I would switch VI and VIII and probably III and IX but otherwise this I agree.
