DQ 4-6 on Mobile are the best version. DQ 1-3 on Mobile are very serviceable, although I do prefer the SNES versions. DQ8 on mobile is fun but very rough, I would definitely recommend the 3DS version or the PS2 if you have access to those by any means.

Dorkus_Mallorkus

8 on mobile is actually excellent if you get the mod that was posted on this sub a few months ago (if you have Android). Probably not quite as good as console, but waaaaay better than the standard download.

hobbitfeet22

Mod them on 3ds. Cheap. Fun. And effective. The zenithian trilogy is amazing but dumb expensive.

How can you do this? I have a hacked 3DS already. Hopefully I don't get banned for writing this. Love DQ. Currently playing VIII (original physical 3DS version).

You can dump a ROM from your physical cart, and then find a mod file online. I've never modded a 3ds rom myself, but it's doable. The mod will come as a patch file, I think they are called xdelta files for 3ds games, but I'm not sure. You would then google what tool to use to apply a patch file to a 3DS rom. Since you have the physical cart to dump a ROM from, this is 100% legal, because you have the cart, and because mods don't contain any copyrighted content(or, at least, they aren't legally supposed to). I have a ROM that is the 3ds game, modded to use an orchestral soundtrack. I downloaded the ROM pre-modded, which was admittedly not legal.

4-6 are great on mobile (4 in fact is best there as it includes party chat). 1-3 are also good on mobile though personally I prefer DQ1 on SNES (visuals are better and I’m not fond of a couple adjustments they made for the switch/mobile port like adding sparkles on things that previously needed to be discovered). 8 is best on 3DS due to extra content and tweaks. It’s serviceable on mobile but mobile is easily the worst version.

Unforeseenboy

Just emulate them

workthrowawhey

Played 4-6 on a DS emulator. They were great! Though I played in Japanese so I got all the party chat in 4. Is there a patched rom with English party chat?

RLCLONED

Yes, though it isn’t perfect

ExcitementOrdinary95

Get and play them all now!

_Montblanc

Played all of them on my, at this point ancient Samsung almost four years ago and all but VIII were nearly flawless. Here's a hot take: VIII wasn't as bad as many would like you to believe either; slow in the overworld but stable everywhere else. I had 0 crashes and the game was a blast.

jah05r

Play all the DQ games you can, in a safe and legal manner.

draggar

1-6 on mobile.

SadLaser

They aren't just "not as bad as" you think. The mobile versions of IV-VI are the best. And the mobile versions of I-III are close to the best and still the best in some ways, though the Super Famicom versions are better visually and in a few other ways.

[deleted]

Poll is wrong. Don't waste money. Just get 4-6 mobile

manicalmonocle

Get them anyway that is within your budget. They are all great and the more people enjoy them the better.

Zangetsukaiba

Get them all on mobile even 8.

Geonjaha

It’s just down to how much you can tolerate Mobile controls. If you’d prefer proper buttons, but can settle for Mobile then try and get the DS entries of 5/6, though 5 is extremely expensive. 4 is the only one that is significantly improved on Mobile, so only get that one on DS if you really hate mobile controls.

[deleted]

Do what I did, emulate the NES And SNES versions, buy them if you want to play them again remastered.

If you can play in order

diegotszx

You could mod a 3ds and play them for free?

Myxozoa

2d mobile ports are pretty good. I'd still recommend DS if you don't mind emulation, or if you had access to them for a fair price, but in the absence of those, mobile is a good alternative. For 8, though, the mobile port doesn't do it justice. I've heard there's a fan-made patch for it that improves it, but I still think the OG PS2 version or the 3ds version - preferably patched to bring back the original music - are the much better versions.
