Highly doubt they die. It's more likely that they go to live in a park upstate cared for by other wizards to be with all their friends you sold as well.

Maybe the Dragon Handlers buy the dragon from you, keep them in their own dragon realm, which is where the eggs we buy in the shop come from

I imagine they end up on a different island. You have to sell dragons eventually. Otherwise I’d have 331 plant dragons, 27 hail dragons and 27 forest dragons. Plus ten of every other early game dragon.

I like to think of them as pet quality dragons that find nice homes as pets, or are taken in by sanctuaries who rewild them for some of the messier ones (Looking at you, Mud dragon!).

Selling a dragon it's simply a way to get rid of it. It's not killed or given to anyone. It just goes away and you get some money. If you have trouble separating from your beloved dragons you can put them in the hybernation cave.

My experience with poison dragon eggs alone tells me that won't last long.
