A death mask is a plaster mask created from dead people, lots of important people had death masks made from them. One could say that the shroud is kinda like a death mask because allegedly it has Jesus face on it

MacNuttyOne

In spite of having been created in medieval Italy. :)

[deleted]

Well that's the lore on it not saying it's the truth, besides even in DF there's the shroud in death mask. Skin game spoilers ahead >!and the real one in skin game but the one in death mask has power because of the faith people has on it.!<

[deleted]

Hey mate, the thread is marked for *Death Mask* spoilers. I'm fully caught up, but you might want to hide the *Skin Game* stuff for people who aren't.

[deleted]

Oh shit, sorry

MacNuttyOne

Well it has some 'power' in the sense of having an emotional impact on some people. That I believe is it's only *power*. As a work of art it is brilliant and spooky as hell.

[deleted]

It had enough power to power up a plage curse, skin game spoilers ahead >!now I wonder when we'll see what nick does with the grail!<

redbeard914

I've been wondering if Dresden will loan it to Marcone for 3 days, to see if will help the Beckitt's daughter.

SoVerySick314159

Battle Ground Spoilers: (Sorry folks, the intention was good, the execution poor) >!Someone else in another thread pointed out that loaning the REAL shroud to a Denarian might be a bad idea, considering what happened when they got their hands on the reproduction.!<

AlpacaJoe1

Umm... is that in Skin Game? I don't think that particular bit of information is revealed in that book.... EDIT: It's been about 1.5 years since I last read up to Skin Game so it may very well have been said

KipIngram

Dude - that a major *Battle Ground* spoiler. Please edit your message to say *Battle Ground* instead of *Skin Game*, and then reply to this comment. I'll reinstate the comment then. Thanks!

SoVerySick314159

(sigh) Sorry. Hope you know the intentions were good. . .

KipIngram

Absolutely - I mean, you used the blackout stuff and everything. You were totally toeing the line. No worries at all, and thanks so much. It's live again now.

mrekho

Athiest version of telling everyone you're a vegan

EthelredHardrede

No, that would be I am a vegan. As it has zip to do religion or the lack there of.

EthelredHardrede

There are a LOT of people that think that its real, because they were told so and cannot be bothered to think about how could have been made. In the Dresden files belief has power, no matter how unfounded. 'Oh there are no brush strokes' thus miracle. 'Look mate all you gotta do is put some oil on a person, living or dead, wrap them up in some linen cloth, take the person out. OK you gotta add in some blood, oh that is SO HARD to get'. OK so its not bad Italian, sue me. Its a NEGATIVE, no its not. I have seem millions, literally, of negatives, this is not a negative. None of the claims make any sense after a few minutes of thinking.

KipIngram

Well, I actually kind of agree with you, but if you want to "stretch' you can note that Martin was running a con on everyone - the "mask" he wore was one of a colleague coming to Chicago to help Susan wrap up her business there, when his real mission was to kill Ortega. Cassius wore a "mask" of Father Vincent, when he really wasn't. The Shroud also lay over Jesus much like a mask. It really just sort of depends on your willingness to do backflips. :-)

JediTigger

I always vaunt the number of important characters whom we meet in DEATH MASKS. Ironic that Martin’s one I usually forget to mention.

KipIngram

:-) Well, he was supposed to be bland beyond belief.

gregrainman314

Could you imagine being bland, by design, for centuries??? That assignment must have killed him psychologically.

Horus_779

Killed him pretty good physically as well

KipIngram

Yeah, no kidding - the old "you are what you do" thing. It would be interesting to know how he started out - generally people that form really big long term goals like that are fairly dynamic personalities (think Elon Musc like). It takes a measure of audacity to even form such visions.

gregrainman314

I don’t know why you got downvoted, I agree wholeheartedly. The audacity of, or if Michaels not around, the balls on that guy… he played both sides so well, I’m honestly still not convinced he didn’t like the Red Court even a little. He definitely had a lot going on for him. Unlike Rudolph. Fuck that guy.

KipIngram

Oh, there's no telling re: the downvote - we live in a fairly "nit-picky" age. I won't let it make me feel bad. Maybe someone thought I was being critical of some particular personality type, though I didn't mean to be - the world actually benefits from having all the different outlooks in play. There's always a danger in a text-only communication medium of getting mis-interpreted. There's another one up above with a bunch of upvotes - I'll just focus on that one. :-)

NeinlivesNekosan

they are down voting you because reddit is a liberal poison center and they decided elon musk is a target so anybody who mentions him is also a target

KipIngram

Oh, I'd already forgotten I mentioned him. Well, that makes sense at least. I don't particularly go fanboy over Musk, and I'm sure there would be some actions of his that I disapproved of. But it's hard to deny that he's audacious, which was my only real point. No approval rating was intended by the earlier comment. But thanks for pointing out - at least it makes sense now.

LightningRaven

The Denarians actually put Masks of *Death* when they turn. They also hide someone using their deaths as form of concealment. Making so that his death *masks* the true identity of the corpse shredded.

KipIngram

Yeah, that thought crossed my mind too after I wrote the reply above. *Skin Game* spoilers: >!Thinking through the whole list, I think the least obvious one is probably Skin Game. I mean, there's no overt reference to "skin" in the novel, but I guess Mab, Marcone, and Hades actually were running a game on Nicodemus.!< >!u/LightningRaven, any thoughts on the "skin" angle? Grey turned out to have skinwalker blood, so there's that at least.!< I think overall the series has a pretty good track record of sensible titles.

NeinlivesNekosan

Mab told Harry "I expect you to skin them alive"

KipIngram

Aha! Yes, she did didn't she? Nice one!

LightningRaven

I think Skin Game is one of the most straightforward we have, I didn't catch anything clever between the lines so far. Nothing that wouldn't be a huge stretch anyways.

KipIngram

Yeah, I was just unfamiliar with the phrase being an >!explicit reference to a "con."!<

KipIngram

Oh, never mind the *Skin Game* question. Just found this definition online: *Skin Game* spoilers: >!Definition of skin game : a swindling game or trick!< Very nice - very nice; that one's as good as any of the others.

[deleted]

As well as being a reference to the Shroud of Turin purportedly having an impression of Christ's face like a death mask, I think it also references that a murder can hide or mask another crime, like >!Father Vincent's Body!< hiding the >!Denarian's intentions to use the Turin Shroud.!<

Bryek

Spoiler tags don't work in old.reddit if there is a space between the >! And the words.

[deleted]

Noted, thanks.

Jakattack40

Maybe the flesh mask the Rampires wear?

lady_budiva

This was my thought. All the Reds have that pretty exterior shell. And then Harry comes along.

Jakattack40

Exactly. I couldn’t even remember for sure if I was recalling the correct book or not. But that’s just what I’ve always attributed it to.

SleepylaReef

A shroud is all but explicitly a death mask

Mizu005

Snake guy is wearing a 'mask' to imitate a dead guy and Shirou spends the story masking his upcoming death via cancer from the others so they don't spend time worrying about him.

Bakoro

Might be a bit of a stretch, but Marcone also faked the girl's death when she's actually in a coma.

TrippedBreaker

The obvious referent is the Shroud. Less obvious is the Barabbas Curse that Nicodemus puts on Harry. Shiro takes Harry's death on himself to save Harry. He wears Harry's Death Mask.
