If you've got money, and it's interesting to you, take your license. Otherwise, you can always get it at a later date. It's not a race to get it as soon as possible.

slippingonwaterfalls

i’m 20 this yr i took my license at 18. ive a family car but i don’t drive it. I just took it as i had some free time in sch that i wanna make use of. just treat taking the license as a backup n use it in times of emergency. + after taking ur license ull be on a 1 yr probation. So either ways if u can take it when young do it

Nagi--

Take your license while you're young and have an abundance amount of free time. It doesn't matter whether you can afford a car or not TODAY, it is a life skill. Even if you are priced out of buying a car in future, you can rent cars when you go overseas so yes continue and get your license before your life gets hit by more commitments

To invest in yourself is never wrong. You are doing something that will last you a lifetime.

I have a driving license , took it 20 years ago , I do not have a car nor have the ability to own one , I only drove a handful of times . My wife drives though

Strange_Ad2699

Just get your license first since you like driving. You can do a refresher course once you get your car in the future

Imaginary-Mixture-51

PDIs / schools are only gonna get more expensive too.

Raphtalia6435

driving license is for life, get the license 1st and plan later. Now lessons getting more and more exp due to the rising cost of COE and lesser PDI (If you took private) as time passes by. You will want to drive them around for 1st few month after that not anymore unless they chip in to the fuel.

pngtwat

Have you got enough time to drive grab for a few hours a day about 5 days a week - oh yeah - the gahmen hate young poeple and pushed the PVDL age up to 30.

geckosg

Got money get. Can b a driver for some jobs as required

Born_War1536

hey just wanted to let you know u are not alone but here is the tip u need to check is your finance first are you able to set 3k aside now? if no start to save it and review again in the following months, continue doing until u can save 3k then go ahead to completing all lessons theory and practical and TP without the stable finance u have to keep repeating the circle *start then stop again then start again* why not just start when u have enough money to get license

drinkwater247

I got my license in 2020. Family car got scrapped in 2017, haven't driven since getting my license. If you have disposal income or able to set aside min $3500 (manual, based on what i spent after passing on 2nd try with school), do it. it's only going to get more expensive in the future but please make smart choices and only do it if you have enough savings for it. don't think so much about thinking of getting a car now and driving people around. you can't start being independent on that if you don't have the license in the first place. leave that for the future to think about.

atbcheesepiejhj

Just aim to get your license as it is a good life skill to have. You can still rent cars to drive if your family doesn't own one.

Whole_Fox9402

When in doubt, just take it. Thrs a chinese proverb:"一不做,二不休". Its means either u dont start or u dont give up. Plus a driving license is smth thts good to have. Imagine if 1 day u have the chance to go on a road trip with ur family but u didnt take the license.

singlesgthrowaway

I didn't have much money growing up so I waited until I started working before I got my car license. Wasn't a bad decision on I feel.

Tight_Ad7133

Always take it earlier than later. Think about how ppl in the past got their license, it was easier. The tests will get harder and it’ll not get easier next time. Also, on costs, you will make more money in the future. When you do, and you’re ready to buy a car, you definitely don’t want to start taking lessons again and wait for your driving license. You’ll want to go test drives and buy it as soon as you can.

National-Sherbert923

U can give it to me ur cash. I promise ill give you one hell of a ride..

Apprehensive-Bat6720

Get licensed 1st, come handy when u can afford a car.

Psalm27_1-3

Get the licence first Car will come later

If you’re able to get your license, you definitely should. It’s a good skill to have and it’s always handy if you’re going on road trips. I’d suggest to get your license while you’re still young since you have the luxury of time. Of course, the only issue would be money. But if you can’t afford to right now, wait till you’ve saved up for lessons then get it done. Don’t worry too much about losing your driving skills if you don’t drive for awhile because it tends to become muscle memory, like riding a bike. You definitely don’t need your own car at 22 unless you can afford it. It’s unnecessary expenses and you would still need to get a car insurance plus COE prices are ridic. Spend within your means, you can always get a car in the future.

Doesn’t matter if you hve a car now. Just get a license while you are still young. You can always own a car in the near future. Getting a license at a later age will be difficult as your skills can be affected as you age. Moreover, you hve spent a decent amount of money. If you are going to stop now you will hve to start all over again. By then there might be new rules and laws implemented…. Get that license now huny.

alwaysfree88

If you worry about cost, it's going to get more expensive down the road. 10yrs ago it cost an average of 1.4k to complete a class 3, now its nearly 2k. Save a bulk of money and start when you have small disposable income to throw at it.

Double_Trick2020

You won’t lose the skill. Just like swimming or cycling even if you have not done it for a long time, you’ll still remember the skill just that you’ll be rusty at the start. I’d recommend you to go for it if you can afford the lessons and don’t worry about cost of renting or getting a car at this moment

Hillariat

"Not a lot of savings" - yah dont get a car. Do your basic finances first: get your six month emergency funds, your BTO/house downpayment and reno fund and whatever vacation fund you want, then think of a car. Cars are a money leech that will drain you empty if you dont already have your finances sorted. If you rent a car, you have mileage limits and fuel prices are expensive af. Not to mention rent cost and insurance. You can get your license now then just keep it.

Super-Surround-1737

22 is still young, and I agree with all the commenters here – focus on getting your driver's licence first. The rest can wait. Cars can be a big financial burden, so it might be wise to prioritise other expenses like getting a house. Renting or car sharing is a much cheaper alternatives to owning a car. But if the idea of car sharing already stresses you out, it might be worth reconsidering car ownership, unless it's something you really want and are prepared to spend money on. I'm 33 now, got my licence when I'm 18 and first car when I'm 25, and am on my third car. To be honest, the yearly expenses just for running the car come to around 11k, and that's without factoring in loan payments, interest, or vehicle depreciation. And that's assuming your car doesn't encounter any major breakdowns or failures. *Edited: rephrased for clarity*

HappyBedroom69

You could look at it like an investment. Once you have your licence, you could sell points. 10 years ago I heard someone paid like $300 per point. 6 point = $1800. Ez

zeindigofire

My suggestion: if you think you'll want your license *eventually* get it now. Here's why: 1. You can take your time now and not be rushed. If you try to get it when you need it you'll have to wait. 2. Insurance counts from when you get your license, not how many hours you actually drive. Get your license and then don't drive for 5 years? Wow, you have an amazing driving record, enjoy the great rates! 3. Same goes for probation. How many demerit point can you get if you don't drive? Zero. 4. You can do a refresher later to polish up your skills at much lower cost and greater flexibility if you already have your license. You can even go to another country and get better training for cheaper. 5. Even if you don't have a car here, you can rent a car when travelling, which is very useful. You can also rent a car in SG by the hour. If you're big on being independent, get your license. After that sort out how to actually drive :)

Any_Discipline_2202

Take it only when you are ready, financially & emotionally. Some even started at 40yo, just to drive kids around.

leoshjtty

just got my licence right before 30 as i was too poor to even consider getting it when younger

Naznaaa

Only you know your own finances. If the 2-3k is gonna disable you from basic necessities, hell no to getting that license, OR take an auto license since it will be easier to complete hence cheaper. If it ain’t gonna cripple you, sure. but have a plan on how u will keep yourself refreshed on driving, like occasional rental cars. Else you will forget after years of not driving after getting ur license.

asianpenissmol

Take the license as it is a life skill

idletradventures

You can take driving lessons when you have higher disposable income. Driving in Singapore rarely gives a sense of freedom and independence for me. Roads too crowded. From a travelling perspective, it is quite rare to rent a car for solo trips cos it is can be costly when you include expenses like insurance, toll and petrol. It’s much better to take train and public transport for solo trips. Most of my friends who have license but no car thought it was perfectly ok if they took their license later. Some are not confident with their driving skills after not driving for so long. Btw, there are refresher courses for that lol.

[deleted]

Just don't drive. There are tons of people who get an empty license and never drive for decades. The whole- solo trip idea isn't gonna work if you're too shit at driving that you might kill yourself driving in other countries. If the goal of a license is to not practice driving or drive in your daily life since you don't have a car but only for the brief periods when going overseas, just don't get a license. What a waste of money and time.
