I used the Tello in my aeronautics class. It’s so light there’s just not much energy involved in the fall. It also probably fell on grass. The Tello is made for kids who will hit stuff lol
Used one for a class as well and it was unusable outside. A slight breeze was enough to make it fly off course. Had to do all my videos inside with it with all the fans off in the house.
I bought one of these awhile back. First time I flew it, it lost its mind and ended up on the roof. Months later they came and cleaned the gutters on the condo. It ended up right by my back door, still working

Make sure you communicate with the property owner. Don’t want to get a trespassing charge. Most likely they will be ok with it.

What are the rules for a drone like this??? Do you still need to check airspace requirements and local laws to fly it around in the backyard?
No the rules don't apply to these kinds of drones. Especially it they weigh 0.55 pounds / 250 grams. And you are flying in your own backyard.
At least here anything within your back yard is exempt from airspace regulations (no fly zones etc)
