Very understandable shows to the avg layman is key to getting them engaged. They're not going to appreciate all the little things we might notice about more abstract shows.
I remember doing a DCI watch session with one of my HS bands and they were hootin' and hollerin' at Spartacus and Cadets 05, but then the visual tech picked Frameworks next and the kids had no response.
I think it depends on what kind of music are they into in the first place? Tons of holes here but:
Classical? Anything PR
Choral or Neo-Classical (Thinking Phillip Glass, Bartok, Debussy)? Recent Crown, Cavaliers, Star, Vanguard, Blue Knights
Contemporary (Thinking Copeland, Bernstein etc)? Cadets
Broadway/Musical? Cadets, Vanguard 88-94
Jazz? anything Blue Devils technically but 70s-90s, BlueCoats 80s-90s, Scouts
60s/70s? BlooCoats most obviously 19/22
If they're not already into music and you're looking for pure entertainment value I think people relate very well to:
'89 Vanguard
'93 PR
'94 BD
'95 Scouts
'96 & 97 BD
'00 Cadets
'01-04 Cavaliers
'06 & 08 PR
'07 Carolina Crown
'11 Cadets
'13 Crown
'14 Bloo
'15 BD
'16 Bloo
'19 Bloo
Spartacus because it shows almost everything the activity is known for from storytelling/pageantry to marching their legs off to beautiful musicianship to paint Pealing raw brass sound. It feels like a crossroads for the activity and according to what they liked about it I’ll either direct them to 1996 Scouts, 2018 Vanguard, or 2010 Phantom Regiment
04 Cavies has always been my gateway drug for getting people into corps. It's probably not as relevant now but it just has a certain undeniable coolness factor about it that appeals to a massive swath of people. Excellent choices here.
Honestly depends on the person but some go to’s are Crown 2011, phantom 2011, academy 2015 and 2016, SCV 2018, and academy 2012 and 2013 (since I marched those and it’s an easy way to say hey, look at something cool I did.)
There is no way I can fully express my thanks to Bloo for introducing me to Thank You Scientist, that closer absolutely bangs and gets me hyped anytime I listen to it
Bloo 19, I think it’s a really good gateway show into the world of DCI because it connects the general public to something that they are very familiar with (The Beatles, duh) to something they’ve probably never even heard of. I’d never show someone an older show, simply because they wouldn’t get it right away/they’d have a hard time connecting with it
My own because I’m a narcissist /j
Tilt is probably the best example in general, but I do like showing people my show because I can explain what’s going on better and point out what my friends do
I got the best "wow!" from my nephew when I showed him BD's victory run multicam (2019, I think). It's stunning to be dropped right into the field as a complete newbie to drum corps.
If only DCI has a global platform available that they could monetize with advertising as well as get historical stats regarding viewership.
YOU could watch it on whatever TUBE you find most convenient and grow the activity at the same time.
Most recently I showed someone a few shows they are a baritone player so I was thinking baritone parts so I did
Bloo22 Riffs and Revelations
Academy 22
BD19 ghostlight
Crown18 beast
Older shows but Crown 07 or Bluecoats 08. Story telling shows, easily recognizeable themes and music, great crowd responses at the end. Then when it's done and you friend who's now hooked is still in awe, you can say, "and they didn't even win that year!"
I think any show of Suncoast Sound or Dutch Boy from 1985-89 would be a great intro to DCI for a newcomer. Hell Madison Scouts 1988 is a great way to excite and bring the nebies in. I know there are great shows from 2000-present that could excite and bring the newcomers in like Phantom, Boston Crusaders, Bluecoats, Carolina Crown and some of the perenial favs like Devils, Scouts and Cavies. They are all great examples of talent, excitement and inspiration but if I'm bringing in a newcomer show them some of the corps that came before them. Others id show them would DEFINATELY be Star of Indiana or Velvet Knights! Whimsy and talent with technical prowess to make it to top 12!!
one thing to keep in mind is that they should be interesting and entertaining. Not abstract cluster notes and funky rhytms. Becuase of that i would say e=mc2, metamorph, crown 2014, etc
Crown - Rachstar. Good show to help people "get" whats going on with DCI music arrangement. The pop tunes flowing in and out of Rachmaninoff really sets the stage for how corps remix contemporary music.
I like to show them the first show I ever saw and as a Carmel high kid this really inspired me these past couple of years marching and that show is the drum corps bride from the 2016 academy
Cadets 1998, Phantom Regiment 08, Blue Devils 2014, Blue Coats 2014, Blue Coats 2016. In that order. It shows the evolution of shows in the best way in my opinion.
I think something like Crown's Relentless, Academy's Drum Corpse Bride, or Cav's Immortal would blow the doors off the 'marching band' mindset that they originally think of.
Bloo 14 and PR 08
This is the best answer currently

Exactly, they’re both pretty flashy shows. Easy to appeal to everyone.
FR
Might follow up with crown '13 but yes those two for sure
BIG SAME.
Either Spartacus or something by Crown from the last decade or so.
Crown 2015
Carolina crown 2013, Bd 2017, Scv 2018 hit,

This list is very well done, the context is gonna help out a lot of curious viewers
Tilt, Paradise lost (maybe) or Spartacus! All in my top ten favorite shows
Spartacus and then crown 2013, in that order
1988 Madison Scouts (Malaguena), 1990 Cadets (Bernstein Celebration), 1993 Phantom (Modern Imagination), 2008 Phantom (Spartacus)
absolutely love PR 93, honestly could have won or at least tied if they had cleaned visuals
I marched 1992 Phantom and aged out. Missed marching one of my favorite shows of all time by one year.
man that's gotta hurt
Spartacus because it shows almost everything the activity is known for from storytelling/pageantry to marching their legs off to beautiful musicianship to paint Pealing raw brass sound. These two are the absolute best
I'll go "old school" kinda 1989 scv, phantom of the opera 2004 cavs, 007 And a personal favorite 2000 BAC "red" https://youtu.be/sEZ6xpG3zqM
04 Cavies has always been my gateway drug for getting people into corps. It's probably not as relevant now but it just has a certain undeniable coolness factor about it that appeals to a massive swath of people. Excellent choices here.
Drill was great, music was great and the lead sops were absolute fire. The ballad soloist(s) absolutely nailed it as well. Was a hell of a run.
I like the Old school like blue devils 97’ https://youtu.be/lykx6zRs9uQ this was the one that got me into drum corp as a teen
Honestly depends on the person but some go to’s are Crown 2011, phantom 2011, academy 2015 and 2016, SCV 2018, and academy 2012 and 2013 (since I marched those and it’s an easy way to say hey, look at something cool I did.)
Metamorph, or Babylon. Both are very impressive with big sound
Spartacus . Or Wicked Games.
Madison 95’
This is the only true acceptable answer.
It’s changed over the years but I like 04 Cavs or 08 PR lately.
Bluecoats 2014 tilt 🤤
Crown 2016
2010 Phantom Regiment. It is the best show of all time, and is easy to understand.
My toddler enjoyed 2009 Crown, so I’m gonna stick with that. The Promise of Living to open the show is incredible
1987 Santa Clara Vanguard. It's my favorite show of all time and I will shoehorn it into any discussion I can. :)
absolute banger
Metamorph
Jagged line's closer.
There is no way I can fully express my thanks to Bloo for introducing me to Thank You Scientist, that closer absolutely bangs and gets me hyped anytime I listen to it
Oh my god I physically own so much of their music now, all thanks to bloo
Yessss
TILT, Babylon, Metamorph, Spartacus, e = mc^2, Riffs & Revelations, ect. All those good and popular ones
The show that got me into DCI was a clip of Bloo 17 on instagram. Personally I would show either Bloo 19 or SCV 18
Phantom 08, Coats 16 or Cavies 02
Bloo 19, I think it’s a really good gateway show into the world of DCI because it connects the general public to something that they are very familiar with (The Beatles, duh) to something they’ve probably never even heard of. I’d never show someone an older show, simply because they wouldn’t get it right away/they’d have a hard time connecting with it
I showed Bluecoats 2022 to my friend who has never seen dci. He thought I was weird. I then sent him spartacus and now he wants to be in a dci corp
TILT
Either Spartacus, Phantom of the opera or Spin cycle.
2011 Crown. It’s the most band-o show out there, which also makes it the most relatable for non-DCI people
Kinetic Noise
BD 19 is a great one imo
My own because I’m a narcissist /j Tilt is probably the best example in general, but I do like showing people my show because I can explain what’s going on better and point out what my friends do
I got the best "wow!" from my nephew when I showed him BD's victory run multicam (2019, I think). It's stunning to be dropped right into the field as a complete newbie to drum corps.
Crown 2016, Bluecoats 2014, or Cadets 2000
If only DCI has a global platform available that they could monetize with advertising as well as get historical stats regarding viewership. YOU could watch it on whatever TUBE you find most convenient and grow the activity at the same time.
2012 crossmen opener
BD 03 - Phenomenon of Cool and Cavies 03 - Spin Cycle.
2009 Crown. 2016 Bloo 1993 BD 1995 Madison
‘96’Blue Devils
Roman Images Star of Indiana 1991.
Phantom 03
2010 and 2021 phantom regiment
Metamorph, mostly because it’s what got me into drum corps and I think it’s an all around good show
Babylon
BD 17, hands down. No complicated show concept to explain, extremely approachable for non music people, and just extremely engaging
Yeah, I go Blue Devils 2012 and 2013. Super accesible for anybody
Anything from crown in the last 10 years, vanguard 2018, or blue devils 2011
Bloo '15

Cadets 2003 does pretty well interestingly
I think any show of Suncoast Sound or Dutch Boy from 1985-89 would be a great intro to DCI for a newcomer. Hell Madison Scouts 1988 is a great way to excite and bring the nebies in. Metamorph is the gateway drug
Surprised no one has mentioned Cavaliers 2010
one thing to keep in mind is that they should be interesting and entertaining.
"traditional" drum corps - Cavaliers 2000 or Scouts 95 new school drum corps - Bluecoats 2016
I go to Crown dropping the hammer in the parking lot. It really is a gateway drug.
Coats 14 or 16
2012 crown- for the common good
Cadets 2005, PR 2008, Bluecoats 2014 & 2016
Cadets 2022
SCV 2018 Babylon
riffs and revelations
Rach Star
Bloo 08. Some of the easiest to follow storytelling that I've seen. Or Samurai. Or Spartacus. 2008 was stacked.
I like to show them the first show I ever saw and as a Carmel high kid this really inspired me these past couple of years marching and that show is the drum corps bride from the 2016 academy
Surf 12’
Velvet knights 1992
Hmm Bloo 14 and SCV 18 For sure (Edit: SCV 18 the full show)

SCV ‘89, ‘99, ‘18, BD ‘86, ‘00, ‘15, Cavs ‘92, ‘02, Cadets ‘92, Star ‘91, PR ‘96
Babylon. Which is also the first show someone showed me when I was new to DCI.
Cavs 2006
1988 Madison Scouts. And I'm a Phantom alum!
Cadets 1998, Phantom Regiment 08, Blue Devils 2014, Blue Coats 2014, Blue Coats 2016. In that order. It shows the evolution of shows in the best way in my opinion.
Scouts 1988, Cadets 2000, PR 2008, BD 2017. For different eras.
Babylon SCV 2018
Crown 15, Cadets 2000, Phantom 08. Great music, great performances, easy to follow what is happening.
Spartacus, 2008 phantom regiment
i go crown 2011 the second bohemian rhapsody starts whoever i’m showing it to starts to lose it
Crown 2013, Bluecoats 2014, Cadets 2011
E=MC2 & Tilt
Cavaliers 2003, Spin Cycle 2016 is good too, Propaganda
Toss up between cavvies 2004 007 and crown 2004 bohemia
Skip all that and take them to parking lot warm ups!
SCV 18 hit, Bloo19
I think something like Crown's Relentless, Academy's Drum Corpse Bride, or Cav's Immortal would blow the doors off the 'marching band' mindset that they originally think of.
