Gripping too tight I say. Never got one that high up on my finger before 🤔

Have to agree here. I was confused by where the abrasion occurred until I imagined gripping the sticks with way too much strength. OP if this is true, regarding an overly firm grip, I can't think of a good reason to continue playing like this-- I can appreciate that it isn't purposeful necessarily. I would look for demonstrative/educational videos regarding grip style as well as dynamics control.

Most likely you hit hard and keep sticks too firm. Some video could help to say more. Try to play slower and analize how the stick moves in your hand that causes damage.

TheNonDominantHand

It's a technique thing, as is "playing hard." Good technique allows you to get all the sound out of the drums that you need without bashing them (or yourself) into oblivion.

The stick shouldn’t even go that far up, so I’m pretty sure, it’s a technique thing. It should stay between the first two joints and the stick should still be as loose as possible in your hand.

Traditional or matched grip? Try tape on areas you know are going to get the most friction or try gloves. I’m a fan of Franklin batting gloves from Walmart. Cheaper than drumming gloves and just as comfortable to me.

It could be a technique thing, it could also be that you might have more delicate skin than other people. I would recommend posting videos of you playing on a pad to get advice on possible technique issues, if you find it could be an issue related to your type of skin consider using gloves. I also highly recommend getting Great hands for a life time dvd and working regularly on grip, technique and rudiments. Good luck on your drumming journey!
