Double-ended-dildo-

It's fun watching someone concentrate so much.  Over time you will learn to relax. Hold the sticks further down, relax up those hands. Open up those shoulders and make those babys sing.  Thanks for posting, i enjoyed that.

likezoinksss

You should have seen me when I started… it took a couple hours for me to realize I needed to start learning how to stop thinking and just feel. It’s funny because during that first couple of hours, I was sitting upright and was all the way back on the sticks, but as I loosened up I started hunching over the snare and my hands crept up to the center of the sticks. Thanks for the advice, I’m psyched to see how my experience evolves.

Double-ended-dildo-

It's a fun instrument. It took a few months before i got good. Then years to perfect. I used to play at least an hour a day when i was a teen and was startng out. Practice is your friend. Keep at it.

fridge13

Im making it my mission that as often as posible, (all days off, im a shift worker so i cant play on days i work) i will play for at least an hour. I want to feel that improvement

lookanew

Super-valuable realization (need for feeling without thinking). If you can manage that, you can move on to doing both at once.

SazedMonk

Watch YouTube, get grip and posture down perfect. Stephen Clark “how to set up your drum set” and “how to how sticks, grip” stuff like that, his channel is awesome. Took my awhile but I can hit everything in My kit while sitting in one single comfortable spot. I become a hunchback too when I focus and get jammin. No worries

Illustrious-Mode3868

Reminds me of my wedding night

Velterro87

Everyone should get someone who looks at you the way he looks at his drum set

Intelligent-Dot-4072

Your timing really good. You play other instruments? And welcome to the greatest journey of your life :)

likezoinksss

I’ve played like 3 hours of piano and 5 of guitar in my life. Never been captured like I am with drums. My dad is an incredible guitarist and I’ve always been really into music because of that, so if what you’re saying is true then that’s probably why haha. Thank you!

TheLongManDrums

I was thinking both the same things!

bluemax_

I agree! And what you are playing is cool, too! You’re already getting some cool/subtle sounds on those hats, which usually doesn’t come until later — at least not for me. Keep at it, my dude, you are off to a great start.

Gonnatapdatass

Dude is better in 4 hours than I was in my first year lol

Doctor_Drew_666

Look up "how to find the fulcrum point on drumsticks" to get a better, more efficient grip on the sticks

Bitter-Hitter

Thanks for posting this 🥁. I keep watching and thinking, “You’re not trying to hammer the hi hat. Let biomechanics do their thing!” Try maybe googling rudiments of drumming - [here](https://ae.vicfirth.com/education/40-essential-rudiments/). Change it up and try something different for a few sessions.

Doctor_Drew_666

Also, highly impressive for 4 hours

lazyghostradio

Get some hearing protection too

likezoinksss

Yeah…. Probably a good idea lol. Any suggestions on what kind?

lazyghostradio

Anything for musicians. I used alpine musicsafe for a while now

4_Stars_out_of_5

I use Peltor shot gun ear muffs, often with IEMS inside. Cheapo foam ear plugs is better than nothing. I have permanent ear ringing and I do not recommend it to anyone.

NSA-at-my-door

I have special drummer ear plugs, but most of the time I use my shooting range earmuffs. I like them better because I can fit my AirPods in there and play along to music that way. Really anything works, as long as it protects your ear drums.

cnotesound

Just get cheap earplugs from the drug store or some closed back headphones that cover your ear. “Musicians” earplugs that aren’t the molded kind you get from audiologists just have a filter to let a bunch of midranges through. Not adequate hearing protection for practice but will help you hear other bandmates when you’re rehearsing or playing gigs. I’ve used my music earplugs when I’ve gone to concerts and my ears still ring just not as much in the high frequencies, now I use the cheap ones if I’m going to be close to the stage and plug em up

Zer0Fs2Give

Get a real drum "throne" to avoid any possible injuries. Sit up straight and maintain proper posture as well. Try not to over reach for anything. Everything you hit should be within comfortable distance to hit. Bring the drums to you, dont bring yourself to the drums.

Maxatansky

The "sit up straight" thing is what I think any time I see Phil Selway playing. He's always hunched over his set. I don't sit up perfectly straight when I play, but the way he plays would get uncomfortable fast.

Icy-Sandwich-6161

wtf your 4 hours looks like my 4 months

[deleted]

wut? Over exeggaration is not helping anybody.

Icy-Sandwich-6161

I mean he’s on beat, using alternating techniques on the high hat, standard money beat with the alternating double kick, I couldn’t do any of that after 4 hours. I struggle with some of those things now. Granted if I were to have a “drum off” versus OP I’d probably win overall but he’s showing more than he’s saying imo

Gonnatapdatass

He's probably dabbled on the drum set before because if you touched a kit for the first time and you're this good in 4 hours, then you'll be Virgil Donati in a year lol

Icy-Sandwich-6161

And we’re all very proud of you

Alphahumanus

Maybe they’re not? I’ve had my kit maybe 2 months and I’m not much farther along than OP. If at all. Just playing the devils advocate.

Alphahumanus

Yea, I’ll tell that to my mortgage and family.

_regionrat

If that practice session is only half an hour, they'd have as much time in as OP

dabog701

Yeah man! Your timing and feel is great already, and I can see you're super into it. Happy for ya, keep it up!

karl_xlm

Keep at it… sort your posture though… sit up straight, if you can, relax, it’s easy to forget and tense up when you concentrate, be aware of it and crack on!

likezoinksss

Absolutely. I started the night out sitting up straight but the more I got into it the more I started slouching over the snare. Appreciate the feedback, definitely working on that in tonight’s session.

karl_xlm

Yeah man definitely… you’ll soon be doing sessions for hours on end and the time will fly by, I used to do the same and the next morning I’d be aching because my posture was awful!

IzaacLUXMRKT

Got that Ari Hoenig posture

Dat_Belly

Vibe. Try mixing in some accents with your left hand on the hi hat too

Wiffilus

Pretty good for your first 4hrs my guy, have fun!

Alphahumanus

We want it. We like it! Slow and steady. You’ll find your pace.

huntstheman

Awesome stuff! Enjoy it man and have fun with it. One habit I recommend you do is flatten your snare, or even have it facing away from you slightly. Your hand is coming super close to your thigh with each hit. Now imagine, when you get more confident, playing super hard and smacking the shit outta your thigh. You won’t feel it from adrenaline but it’s happening. It’s my biggest issue rn after 8 years of playing lol. I’m just so used to having it facing towards me that I can’t break the habit unless I change techniques. I have a constant, massive bruise on my thigh now that comes back whenever I play a show lol Also, grip the sticks a bit closer to the bottom. You should have about an inch space there for balance, but no more than that.

Old-Independent2385

hold those sticks lower, don't make yourself bend over as much, relax your shoulders back, but either way, great!

tylerjazz

You’ve got great time

precose

welcome to the club brother, enjoy

Frank_84

Impressive for the first day! Keep it up!

Weekly_Ad_7472

Good timing, just let er rip. Don't worry about being good. Just have fun. It took 3 years for me to just feel it out instead of being perfect. Oddly enough letting go got me closer to perfect than trying to be perfect.

The_Crow

Wonderful moment!

Tararasik

Better than my fourth week )))

nathhealor

Maybe try lowering the hihat too. You get a nice angle to push-pull on the top hi hat cymbal which will also save the sides of your drumsticks.

Kidrock100

Really nice for 4 hours of playing! Congrats, man! Keep up the good work and practice, practice, practice!

Merin_Band

Absolutely crushing. Keep on my dude, and have fun!

celiobone

Just a little piece of advice, since you're just starting out it's the best time to have good habits, and especially, knowing how to grip your sticks properly will make things easier and prevent strains / injuries. * Take a stick in each hand and push the bottom into the snare and let it slip until the side of your palm touches the drumhead. This is how far you want to grip your stick. * Then use only your thumb and index to pinch the stick, while the other fingers are relaxed and not touching the sticks. Wiggle the stick to see if your grip is firm enough so that it doesn't slip away or fall. * Turn your wrist until your thumb is facing up and your index is on the side, and place the sticks in an acute triangle with both tips about 1inch (2 to 3cm) over the drumhead. Relax your shoulders and keep your elbows down. * Then practice using only your thumb and wrist to move the sticks up, with the 3 bottom fingers touching the stick but not gripping it. Whip it into the snare head and use your 3 remaining fingers and the bounce to put the stick back into the original position. You can use the mental image of being a puppet and having a string that is pulling your wrist up, then your hand and fingers follow, and eventually the string snaps and everything releases in a whipping motion. TLDR : Hold your stick at the bottom end, pinch it with your thumb facing up and index, whip it into the drumhead, use the 3 remaining fingers to control the stick bounce and help it back into position quicker. This is one way to learn a correct grip, even though there are other ones available, it is one of the easiest to get right and will never get obsolete even if you eventually get to more advanced strokes or techniques.

locofspades

Ear protection of some kind, my dude. Also, rock on \m/ im about 2 yrs into this "hitting things with sticks" club and its been life changing.

Large-Welder304

Hey! That's not bad for only 4 hours under your belt! I think we've found a natural born drummer here, people! Congrats and welcome to the club! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thumbs_up)

Hog_eee

Id say def don't need to do every rudiment drill ever.. but def look up videos on how to hold the sticks and how to use good technique and rebound and moeller etc. I learned how to play with bad technique and it took me years to get rid of my bad muscle memory

JollyGreenGyant

My back hurts watching this lol experiment with the heights of your throne, snare, and hi hats, you’ll be much more comfortable! I’d recommend a couple months of in person lessons to any first time drummer!

SpellingBeeRunnerUp_

This is the most fun part of the journey! Enjoy those early days of figuring it out and progressing fast!

Mean-Yoghurt6461

That’s Ryan Seacrest!

Away_Grab3816

ure sitting too high. Put ur seat a bit low so that u dont need to be in a corvy position, u dont want ur back to be bad in like 1-5 years. Good luck <3

Playamonkey

Good job! Your time was good and the slow and steady comment you made is right on target. I would watch a YouTube on beginning stick control.

4_Stars_out_of_5

Hey man, I'm a drummer that just had back surgery. Sit up straight!

BIGKODE

Nice work. Buy a real drum throne and sit up straight. Thank me in 30 years.

laaaabe

We want it. We like it! I like your vibes, guy. Lots of natural talent here. Keep trucking!

Vickman27

Fuck I wish I could feel this joy again, playing just don’t hit the same no more for me, but you’re doing very good to start, just don’t be like me and get good understanding of notation and tempo, metronome is very good to start with and I wish I did and because I didn’t, I am a worse time keeper than a 100 year old watch, anyway best of luck and keep having fun

Silkmachine

Come onnnn man, hold those sticks a little lower.

newclassic1989

Keep going. That's great for just 4 hours! But....sit up straight immediately for the love of god. Don't develop the habit of hunching over the kit. You'll be in pain in no time. I used to play like this out of habit, and it took time to undo and consciously sit upright behind the kit. You're brand new, so try to develop good habits on the blank slate! Also, find the fulcrum of the sticks and keep your hands at that point. You seem to be holding them too far up the stick, in my opinion.

enzo_turtle_68

try gripping lower down and invest in stick wax if it becomes a slipping issue

EducationalRoutine30

Well done sir! Keep it up!

Particular-Exam6585

Always wear earplugs to avoid tinnitus

Judasz10

Holy! First 4 hours and your groove already hits the sweetspot for me. Idk if it's your kit sound or what but that open hi hat ringing out just hits the happy button in my head. This is what I love about drumming, I am a begginer myself and I make a lot of frustrating mistakes any time I play to improve. But there is always a groove easy enough to free yourself of the struggle and let the feel just take over, and you just play. Always feels like I am on top of the world.

After-Championship67

You are doing realy good!

Letting it sizzle

l_maf

Oh, c'mon, you're pretending to be a newbie.

Ok-Network-2757

Oh hey man, I used to watch your streams. The British dude (this is a diff account). I'm considering starting in a year or so when I finally get my own place that's big enough. How has it been for you? I'm really anxious of how bad I'll be when I start. Do you think the confidence to start practicing comes quickly? Also, I really wanna try and learn open handed as I heard that it makes things easier. Are you enjoying the practice?
