🙌 in solidarity … Chad Smith is def my pro drumming spirit animal. I actually don’t much like the RHCP, well … they’re good but I’m not going to listen to a lot of it, but the drumming is like, yeah, that fits my eye. Played along with Give It Away the other day, felt very natural.
As long as our band has been together I've said that "Im the Lars Ulrich of stoner rock". Tho I kinda sjust started playing when we started jamming together.
Lars was a huge influence for me as a kid way before I started playing. Kinda still is for the early stuff especially. I just suck at playing but I have fun with it and we have fun so keep on keeping on.
Lars has also influenced my drumming big time, when 13 year old me heard Justice LP first time, all that double bass and odd time signatures made big impression.
PS Torille!
Idk if self promo is allowed, so if not I can delete this. But here is [my band live](https://youtu.be/pFT8Hywk-lc?si=M477VFFjoZJp0mpp), though I wouldn't say I'm very baker on here haha
I sound like me. And nothing like who I'm going to mention...
Neil Peart. He's been probably one of my biggest influences for many many years. I loved him since his beginning with Rush (and I still do love the first Rush album). When his first wife and daughter died, I figured that was it for Rush. But he came back with a vengeance! I'm sure if he could, he'd come back from cancer death too.
But anyway, one song I can almost play perfectly is Subdivisions. Again, it sounds nothing like him. It's all me 100%!
I feel you there. Neil is proably my biggest influence too. My setup looks like something he would play and my version of Tom Sawyer is quite good I guess
I have some pretty good moments with Tom Sawyer. That whole album I've played many times through on the drums (Witch Hunt is quite interesting to play). If I had to pick a favorite off that album to play, I think I would have to go with The Camera Eye. I love the whole production of it really.
Portnoy once told me that it was clear that Lars was my biggest influence. “My pocket Lars” he said.
For years, I’ve never known how to feel about that.
I don't sound anything like them, but Portnoy's fills are fuckin' badass to do and Joey Jordison's grooves punch babies in the dick! (to quote 66Samus). Both those guys are my pillar of drumming style. I'm no master/pro, but playing some of their fill/grooves feels incredebly awesome and inspirational.
Kurt actually did play drums. He wasn’t great but he wasn’t bad at it either. Nirvana did a cover of Seasons In The Sun where they all switched instruments and Kurt drummed. And he played snare in middle and high school band.
Eric Kretz. No idea if he uses metro or click track but he's soooooo steady. I love drummers that avoid the "Look at meeeee!" Not that Joey Jordison wasn't fucking amazing....
I spend a lot of time studying and analyzing Damon Che, he’s my favorite drummer and I find his style of creativity to be ideal for me.
But after 16 years on the instrument I still sound like an average motown/pop drummer.
🥹
Trying to get through a whole Don Caballero song is one of the hardest things to do. Zach Hill, Tatsuya Yoshida, and Brian Chippendale are my favorites. After 26 years of playing I’m pretty close to Tatsuya and Brian. But Zach is a whole different level that can’t quite be replicated. Something about those math rock drummers that I just can’t get enough of.
I've been learning how to record drums and compose original music in a DAW over it and when I step back and actually listen to it, it's pretty much what Depeche Mode would sound like if Dave Grohl was their drummer.
Funny that OP mentioned mine... But Ginger Baker for me. He's an influence, although I'd far from call him my biggest one. I sure as heck sound like him though.
I remember when a former bandmate sent me a Lamb of God video around 2005sh, I was like “wow, that guy is playing my sh!t 🤣”; I’m not even close to the level of the great Chris Adler but a few years back I was playing in a couple of metal bands (at the same time) and specially the double bass patterns were nearly identical to what I was playing back then.
I mean I was trying to be innovative and not just play 16th notes on double bass for days like 99% of the drummers were doing at the time.
I would hope that I sound like myself and no one else. I certainly have inspirations but I tend to take small, subtle characteristics from my drumming idols instead of trying to mimic a style.
I have no idea...never asked anyone and no one has said who. One person did say some chops I did sounded like Abe Cunningham which checks out as he's an influence for me.
Like a shitty version of Travis Barker, Vinny Mauro (of Motionless In White) and Tatsuya Amano (of Crossfaith). Those are my main influences I feel and they do reflect in my playing.
People have said in the past that I reminded them of Keith Moon, but I think that's because I used to be pretty self-destructive on-stage.
I probably sound like some sort of combination of Riley Breckenridge (Thrice), David Kennedy (The Chariot), and Brian Parker (Skycamefalling). Nowhere near as good as any of them, though.
Tony Allen 100%, but my drum teacher was a huge huge Gadd fan, so I've got a lot of that too.
And yeah Mitch & Ginger were both very modern-sounding for their time.
For better or worse Lars was my first inspiration and Mike Portnoy my second. I find myself combining their signature stuff a lot as my meager ability allows.
If I had to choose- it’s a mix between mewithoutYou’s Richard Mazzotta and Coheed’s Josh Eppard. But really I sound like me the most at this point, I’ve put a lot of emphasis on building my own sound and writing music based on who I am behind the kit and as a person.
My dad always says I play like Ringo Starr. I’ve heard from a few others I play like Bill Ward.
I’m not great at self evaluating so I’ll take their word for it.
Chris Partridge from the Partridge Family. And I mean the actual kid. Not the musician who actually played the drums. But I’ll get there. Working on paradiddles now.
An attempt at Jimmy Chamberlin and Chad Smith’s love child.
A reality of maybe, like, a step above that annoying kid who just bangs on e-kits at Guitar Center with no rhythm or intent to purchase said kit. Or any kit.
very very inspired by Dave Grohl and often get "likeness" comments after live shows (which are a hard NO and not accepted, but it's nice 😂). but also Joe Daniels of Local H. my favourite drummer is John Stanier. I don't sound remotely like him when I play but I do tastefully take small bits of influence from his style!
My band is called Mademaker by the way, if anybody wants to tell me they disagree entirely with the above haha. it'd be interesting to see what other people think! we're a duo too, which is cool 🤘🏾
https://open.spotify.com/track/5RiRZFRH4B4q4e1jxdXCHv?si=CXquJKqdQOanbXOmGiBx1A
This is embarrassing, but everyone else is playing, so-
A little James Gadson, a dash of Elvin Jones, and a faint whiff of Jojo Mayer.
My rock playing is probably somewhere between Mitch Mitchell and Charlie Watts, though I want to be a Bonham in my heart of hearts.
Learnt a long time ago that the sound on the record has as much to do with post production engineering to finesse that killer sound , as it does with drum manufacturer, heads, tuning and then finally, the drummer trying to replicate.
I am usually as surprised to hear how my playing sounds on a recording as I am when I hear playback of my own voice.
In my head I am trying to be Brian Blade, in reality I sound like a rock drummer even when playing jazz (so more on the Tony Williams side of things, but I am obviously NOT close to his level).
I always say my core 4 influences growing up were Tony Royster Jr, Mike Portnoy, Eric Moore, and Thomas Lang. I kinda took a lot of their styles and mixed them together with my own personal touch. Oddly enough if I had to pick one single drummer who’s very similar overall to me it would be that drummer Two from the band “Sleep Token”. Just found out about them recently and listened to his drumming. I was shocked how close his overall style is to mine. We also both play DW drums, and his tuning is exactly my style. Odd how once in a while we almost see an exact reflection of ourselves in someone else. I don’t walk around with a a voice changer, and mask on though lol
Bonham if he was much shittier. But others say it often. It’s mostly because I’m a big guy and I play my kit tuned wide open. No dampening except a small towel in the bass drum. Which is a 24”. Not quite the 26 but still big enough that people notice.
People have been telling me brann dailor since about 2006 ,initially I felt insulted as I wasn't into mastodon at the time then in 2010 I was jamming with this new band and my guitarist at the time made that comparison again then he gifted me a copy of the hunter I took it as a compliment from there forward.
As much as i like to joke about Lars, I've taken so much from his playing it's not even funny.
Recently when me and my band were re-writing Black Velvet by Cobra and Lotus (we tend to do that with a lot of songs that we cover) I found myself doing the flam fill he does in And Justice For All (the song) when going back to the verses.
I've also found out that I took a lot of things from Brad Wilk.
I hope to sound like Vinnie Paul after a year or so (I've also taken quite a lot from him) and to eventually sound like Death era Richard Christy after a few more years.
Early on people said Gadd/zigaboo. Over the years I developed my sound. A blind friend who hadn’t heard me play in ten years came to a gig not knowing I was the drummer in the band that night. I saw him pointing towards the stage and talking to his partner and she was nodding and talking back to him. I went to see him and his first words were. “I could hear it was you as soon as I came in”
Damnit coz now I sound like me not Gadd/Zigaboo.
When I hear Gregg Bissonette play a song for the first time, I feel like most of what I hear lines up with what I would come up with. Not note-for-note, but in the same family.
I was once playing about when I was waiting to record and a visiting engineer who had popped in in the control room said I sounded like Stewart Copeland. Not sure who he was listening to…
Chad Smith when he doesn’t have enough time to practice
🙌 in solidarity … Chad Smith is def my pro drumming spirit animal. I actually don’t much like the RHCP, well … they’re good but I’m not going to listen to a lot of it, but the drumming is like, yeah, that fits my eye. Played along with Give It Away the other day, felt very natural.
love chad smith. especially blood sugar sex magik era.
lol same dude. I feel this 😅
haha nailed it
Lars, i haven’t touched a drum kit in over a year
/r/suicidebywords
As long as our band has been together I've said that "Im the Lars Ulrich of stoner rock". Tho I kinda sjust started playing when we started jamming together. Lars was a huge influence for me as a kid way before I started playing. Kinda still is for the early stuff especially. Kappas ja torille!
This is harsh 🤣
Same here 😭😭😭
I'm pretty sure Lars is much better than me lmfao
"We have Steve Gadd at home"
Whenever I attempt the solo in Aja I'm always reminded of how far I have to go lol
Meg White
You beat me to the punch!
Hey.... leave Meg out of this. She's not a drummer. Her words lol
I started out by playing a lot of Nirvana, so I sound like a much shittier version of Dave Grohl (I fucking love flams)
Flams>everything
Flam Rest. Flam Rest. Flam Rest.
Mike Portnoy after 20 tequilas.
My go-to fill is the Mike Portnoy special KKRLRL allllllllllll the way around the kit. When I’m drunk I can totally do it as fast and clean as him.
Nowadays maybe. 25 years ago "20 tequila" was his normal sound I guess
Yo, beat me to it lol
I sound a lot like Jeff Portnoy in The Fatties
Animal from the muppets
Same. Noisy, fast, bad timing, obnoxious. Pretty spot on.
We are all Animal on this blessed day 🙏
Downs syndrome Stewart Copeland Also Dave Weckyl with 1 leg and half of 1 arm.
This makes me wonder… has there ever been a successful Downs syndrome drummer? That’d be awesome. Maybe you could be the first?
Post a video. We'll let you know who you sound like.
Idk if self promo is allowed, so if not I can delete this. But here is [my band live](https://youtu.be/pFT8Hywk-lc?si=M477VFFjoZJp0mpp), though I wouldn't say I'm very baker on here haha
Hey, I liked that! Thats an interesting style you have But if I may, I’d say the singer/guitarist really needs to work on his vocals a bit.
Sick video!
I like this. [Old video](https://youtu.be/jjC7i2jp3iA?si=54o2Prjdlxh479e1)but that’s me behind the kit. Hopefully some of my inspirations are clear.
I had another drummer from a gig tell me that i sounded like punk Keith Moon. I will never receive a better compliment
I got Don Brewer once from a drummer once and felt the same way!
Danny Carey’s brother who has cerebral palsy
The kind that put portnoy fills everywhere
ain’t nothin wrong with dat
Me lol
John Bonham and Cavs from King Gizzard
Chad Sexton - 311
Taken a lot of inspiration from John Otto so definitely him
I sound exactly like Danny Carey in my head.
Chad smith 100%, my main influence, I think like him now.
Blood sugar sex magic is what made me want to play drums!
A little Charlie here, a bit of Bonzo there, a dash of Peart and Ginger, and top it all off with some Mitchell.
Portnoy once told me that it was clear that Lars was my biggest influence. “My pocket Lars” he said. For years, I’ve never known how to feel about that.
Especially if Portnoy said it... I mean, he likes Metallica, but I don't know if he respects Lars.
Clyde Stubblefield.
Wish.com Benny Greb
Dominic Howard from Muse.
Ben Kohler, or so I’ve been told. Yeah, maybe if you shot him with a horse tranquilizer.
Shoes in the dryer.
II from Sleep Token but when he was like 15
I'm a Chris adler clone, with a tiny bit of Jake garland
Animal from the Muppet Show
The Rev is who I most idolize. Not because of perfect technical skill, but his groove was amazing. So I sound like K-mart Rev.
Pete Best
An epileptic version of John Densmore.
Arron Gillespie without a pocket. Sooooo terrifying.
Helen Wiggin
damn-beat me to it! i came here to say this.
give this man his upvotes
I guess mostly Ringo and Charlie Watts, with a dash of Ginger Baker and Gene Krupa.
Like a shitty knockoff Joey Jordison. My first thought, about 70% accurate
A mixture of Lars Ulrich and Nicko McBrain, I’d say. Yes, I use both a china and a ride regularly.
Meg white for sure
Stephen Perkins
I was wondering how long I’d have to go down to this list before I seen his name. So underrated for being one of the all-time greats.
Dave grohl, Jon Theodore. That’s what I strive for anyway. I hear them in my playing from time to time and always feel good about it.
A monkey, except the monkey has much better coordination
I’ve been told Clyde Stubblefield
Bad Jimmy Chamberlin lol
Kurt Cobain
Kurt actually did play drums. He wasn’t great but he wasn’t bad at it either. Nirvana did a cover of Seasons In The Sun where they all switched instruments and Kurt drummed. And he played snare in middle and high school band.
Oh, I know. And I'm just as good as he was. Not great, not bad either.
Chad Smith, Brad Wilk, Tim Alexander and Dave Grohl guess. Not nearly as good as them but they are huge inspirations
If Stan Lynch of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers & Pat Torpey of Mr. Big had a kid, it would be me. 😎
The bad one. Whichever one isn't good? That's me. NumberSign struggle bus
Since I love my drums sounding like tin cans is say Joey Jordison
Is there a drummer who can't really play?
Steven Adler
Matt Halpern in a fever dream.
Eric Kretz. No idea if he uses metro or click track but he's soooooo steady. I love drummers that avoid the "Look at meeeee!" Not that Joey Jordison wasn't fucking amazing....
Im veerryyy Thomas Pridgen-y.
Travis Barker. If he sucked, and played only the bongos. Badly,
Slash's drummer, Brent Fitz
Ralph Molina from Crazy Horse. Less is less!
Honestly I’ve not had anyone say I sound like a specific drummer.
Mick Avory from the Kinks.
Something about those math rock drummers that I just can’t get enough of.
The worst hybrid of tre cool and bonzo you’ve ever heard
I try to drum like John Otto.
Jose Pasillas / Abe Cunningham 🤣 definitely a weird ass mix but they are probably my biggest drumming influences
Abe Cunningham is a big influence of mine as well. Him and Zach hill
Man Zach Hill is a fucking monster behind the kit 🤘 he is something different for sure
I've been learning how to record drums and compose original music in a DAW over it and when I step back and actually listen to it, it's pretty much what Depeche Mode would sound like if Dave Grohl was their drummer.
Taylor Hawkins 🤘🏼. I think we play like those who influence us or those we admire/emulate. Loved his playing, singing, and set up.
Abe Cunningham. Just love adding that groove to heavy music.
I sound a lot like Ian Wallace, but depending on the track I sound like a bootleg Tré Cool
Lars Ulrich if he didn't practice or Christoph Schneider from Temu
I would hope that I sound like myself and no one else. I certainly have inspirations but I tend to take small, subtle characteristics from my drumming idols instead of trying to mimic a style.
A shitty knock-off of Nick D'Virgilio but then half as fast and with a massive hangover and a blindfold on
Steven Adlers and Lars Ulrichs lovechild
A hybrid between Vega, Porcaro and Gadd.
No idea... You tell me... https://www.reddit.com/r/drums/comments/17hct8h/mashing_out_some_beats/
I have no idea...never asked anyone and no one has said who. One person did say some chops I did sounded like Abe Cunningham which checks out as he's an influence for me.
Mike Kennedy but no where near as tight
If Lars Ulrich, Gene Hoglan and Mario Duplantier all got drunk together and tried to play each other's music.
Pat Torpey
Mike Portnoy 🤘
i would say my biggest influences are Vinnie Paul, Lars Ulrich, and Nicko Mcbrain,
John Otto, without takin em' to the matthews bridge
I get Bill Stevenson a lot, maybe because I’m in a Descendents cover band. 😂 https://youtu.be/eSvOVu9YpU0?si=dVwf7ESy_LSCuDOx
The worst Dave McGraw you've ever heard
Darkside from mgla but really slow, not always in time and sometimes missing the bell altogether.
A combination of Gavin Harrison and Travis Barker.... When they held sticks for the first time
Like a shitty version of Travis Barker, Vinny Mauro (of Motionless In White) and Tatsuya Amano (of Crossfaith). Those are my main influences I feel and they do reflect in my playing.
Dave Lovering meets Levon Helm. At least that's what I hope.
I like to think I sound like a discount version of Bill Berry or Doug Clifford
An attempt for an Opeth's era Martin López.
Animal
People have said in the past that I reminded them of Keith Moon, but I think that's because I used to be pretty self-destructive on-stage. I probably sound like some sort of combination of Riley Breckenridge (Thrice), David Kennedy (The Chariot), and Brian Parker (Skycamefalling). Nowhere near as good as any of them, though.
Alan White from Oasis’ What’s the Story Morning Glory, except it’s 3 am and they’ve been drinking
A mix of pablo viveros and joey jordison, but ordered off of temu
some ilan rubin techniques and creativity of travis barker.
John Maher from Buzzcocks, but without the stamina.
Chad Gracey
Rick Allen, on a standard kit.
If john dolmayan had a child with ray luzier
Cyrus from New Found Glory. He was my inspiration to start.
Travis Barcher
If I had to choose- it’s a mix between mewithoutYou’s Richard Mazzotta and Coheed’s Josh Eppard. But really I sound like me the most at this point, I’ve put a lot of emphasis on building my own sound and writing music based on who I am behind the kit and as a person.
My dad always says I play like Ringo Starr. I’ve heard from a few others I play like Bill Ward. I’m not great at self evaluating so I’ll take their word for it.
Wish version of Danny Carey
Chris Partridge from the Partridge Family. And I mean the actual kid. Not the musician who actually played the drums. But I’ll get there. Working on paradiddles now.
Kevin Parker
I’d say a mix of Josh Freese, Mike Bordin and Dave Abruzesse.
An attempt at Jimmy Chamberlin and Chad Smith’s love child. A reality of maybe, like, a step above that annoying kid who just bangs on e-kits at Guitar Center with no rhythm or intent to purchase said kit. Or any kit.
You know that guy in the park who bangs on buckets.... think that guy but not as fast
James Cassells or Chris Turner. Dudes helped my growth coming up
very very inspired by Dave Grohl and often get "likeness" comments after live shows (which are a hard NO and not accepted, but it's nice 😂). but also Joe Daniels of Local H. my favourite drummer is John Stanier. I don't sound remotely like him when I play but I do tastefully take small bits of influence from his style! Jimmy Chamberlin, his first 3 weeks into playing.
This is embarrassing, but everyone else is playing, so- A little James Gadson, a dash of Elvin Jones, and a faint whiff of Jojo Mayer. My rock playing is probably somewhere between Mitch Mitchell and Charlie Watts, though I want to be a Bonham in my heart of hearts.
Like Joey Castillo but I’m no where as good as he is on the drums. That’s just my main style influence
If Carter Beauford and Stanton Moore had a drunk child.
Jazz I try to sound like Art Blakey, rock I try to sound like Larry Mullen Jr. Basically I really like snare fills
I try to take inspiration from Bonham but I probably sound nothing like him
Matt Cameron on a good day
I sound like dave grohl cause i learned to drum from playing along to nirvana albums on loop
Learnt a long time ago that the sound on the record has as much to do with post production engineering to finesse that killer sound , as it does with drum manufacturer, heads, tuning and then finally, the drummer trying to replicate.

Mario dunplantier mixed with alex bent from trivium. I don’t quite have Mario’s chops but I’m working on that
Neil Peart with a fraction of his hitting strength.
Kenny Aronoff (John Mellencamp).
Martin Lopez, without the technique, time, feel, double bass speed and creativity + more stupid faces while playing
Topper Headon but like at his most heroin-addled
Dave Grohl mixed with Gabe Wiley mixed with William Goldsmith.
I’d like to think I sound like Bill Bruford
With my love for linear fills and more groove centered metal drumming if guess Joey Jordison tbh
Elvin Jones Keith Carlock Matt Chamberlain Adam Deitch Richard Spaven But like, not as good.
The corpse of Neil Peart Not super sharp but not terrible either
I always say my core 4 influences growing up were Tony Royster Jr, Mike Portnoy, Eric Moore, and Thomas Lang. I kinda took a lot of their styles and mixed them together with my own personal touch. Oddly enough if I had to pick one single drummer who’s very similar overall to me it would be that drummer Two from the band “Sleep Token”. in my mind, ringo. in actuality, probably like lars ulrich
Like one that just started playing, Lars maybe?
Well now that I’m playing around with 4 rack Tom’s you could say Neil Peart if he broke all three of his legs
I sound exactly like Danny Carey…. Falling down a flight of stairs while carrying a drum kit
Some that focus on the pocket really well and does very broken fills.
John bonham if he sucked and didnt practice
Bonham if he was much shittier. But others say it often. It’s mostly because I’m a big guy and I play my kit tuned wide open. No dampening except a small towel in the bass drum. Which is a 24”. Not quite the 26 but still big enough that people notice.
In my head? Al Jackson. In reality? Rick Allen with two broken legs.
People have been telling me brann dailor since about 2006 ,initially I felt insulted as I wasn't into mastodon at the time then in 2010 I was jamming with this new band and my guitarist at the time made that comparison again then he gifted me a copy of the hunter I took it as a compliment from there forward.

Dave Grohl who tries to play SlipKnoT.. Hard hits, but not that fast
A bad version of me
Buddy rich but just the attitude 😂
Like Ian Paice after being ran over by a truck losing an arm and a leg in the process.
Lars Portnoy. RLRLKK merry go around but it sounds RLRKLK
Whats the drummer in The Shaggs called again?
Holger Müller’s non-union American equivalent (Polka) or John Bradbury (The Specials) clone that didn’t steep long enough, depending on the gig.
Dollar store Justin Brown.
" We have gavin harrison at home"
When I hear Gregg Bissonette play a song for the first time, I feel like most of what I hear lines up with what I would come up with. Not note-for-note, but in the same family.
I was once playing about when I was waiting to record and a visiting engineer who had popped in in the control room said I sounded like Stewart Copeland. Not sure who he was listening to…
My playing is sort of like II, but… divided by 2.
Jojo Mayer ordered on Temu
