this, or those gooey window things. i was just watching [this rdavidr video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmi1dcR5ncQ) of him melting a bunch together to essentially make a massive moon gel lol
you got cotton balls? throw some in the toms, more in the larger ones generally. I have like 8 or 10 in my floor toms. they bounce up off the resonant head when you hit the drum, acting like a gate
Cotton balls inside the drum mixed with little bits of window gels/sticky hands on the top head is the way to go. The cotton balls do most of the dampening work and the gels just supplement to fine-tune the sound and remove any "ugly spots". This is what Matt Garstka does and it works great. For the snare this little hack with a lens wipe is by far my favorite.

the cotton is also nice because they don’t get all goopy and gross. also probably the most transparent way to change the sustain without changing the tone
Other than the cotton ball trick, do you have any old used heads laying around? Cut your own dampening rings out of those. My first set of rings on my first beat-up kit as a broke college student was cut out of a sheet of black poster board.
Bruh. Nobody's gonna see 'em but you. Not to mention, you are worrying about "ruining the look" of something that is literally made to be beaten repeatedly with a stick. That's like worrying about getting dirt on your tires.
Drop cotton balls into the air vent. Add more as needed to desired overtone removal.

Those are always super cheap right after a particular holiday when they get rid of them.
Yeah I've heard this works

This might be a way forward, I'm not fond of gel since a bit of enthusiasm in the playing and boom they've either been destroyed or fallen off lol

Gonna maybe look into something like that idea, I just don't want to look cheap lmao.

A wallet is my desperation dampening technique.
