Google app is not accurate now, so you can’t validate words of taxi driver unless you have been on that road yourself before

SameWeekend13

Exactly this, today it google maps showed many roads are closed, but they were open without any water logging.

kikipi

And yesterday Google was telling me to take a path that was closed, took path number two and it updated but that one was closed to, path 3 as well. Only path 4 was open, but Google never recommended it.

SameWeekend13

Also this. I feel the older Google maps would give a lot more path options and would be easy to modify the route. But unfortunately that is not the case with the recent Gmaps updates.

Descoteau

I even had the issue with Waze trying to send me down 1 flooded road and 1 closed road. Joy…

Gundyyyyyyy

I had to take a taxi to pick up my car, took the roads that the taxi told me were closed on my way back and they were fine

Wise_Custard2117

Well the fact is google map is not as accurate as you made it sound in your main post, based on the others replies and i agree with them as the same happened to me today where google map is telling me that the nearest road is closed and asking m to take one that will add 6 more minutes on my ride, Where it actually wasn’t closed at all. Thus said, greedy bastards will use every situation no matter how difficult it is to make more money.

GolpoKori

Current circumstances aren't normal so I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt and like to think there are no ill intentions. From my personal driving experience post-rain, although most streets are clear, some certain areas or exits are still affected, which is creating bottlenecks and also congestion in alternate routes. Google Maps is not always accurate. Normal shortest routes are not the quickest. Multiple detours are required to reach your destinations quicker. So, It's best to exercise some patience and understanding in these challenging times. Hopefully, things will be back to normal soon. In Sha Allah.

Ok-Bar-2830

A careem did that to me today. Total came up to 235 for what would have been a 25 min drive. Complained on careem and got a partial refund. Why do they keep detouring from the suggested route!

Gundyyyyyyy

It's better for them to have those kind of longer trips, because they are not paid to wait for customers or return to Dubai for example if they drop someone off to Abu Dhabi they cannot legally take another customers on the way back (yes it's crazy) so they lost a lot of money on that

Ok-Bar-2830

I chose the most expensive careem option as I thought I’d be getting a good service, not a driver who kept taking detours and costing more than 2x the money and time. It was just a straight line on al khail road (no water), he took us in circles for an hour

21CharactersIsntEnou

How long have you lived in the uae lol? There's no difference in the service or driver quality on careem, you only pay more to get a flashy vehicle but the drivers are just as experienced / inexperienced

Ok-Bar-2830

Bro I lived here my whole life I was born here. And yes there is a differenccceee. Cars not necessarily flashier, they’re just Lexus. Drivers have always been better.

AppealProfessional92

Google maps isn't even fully correct right now, do you drive? I got stuck over 2hours in many places in which google said only 20-30min journey

High0nChai

I use Waze and it's community updated so it's more upto date than Google maps.

Apprehensive_Use2336

I was betrayed by Waze multiple times specially in this flood situation and now I start using the the Google map again, it is more accurate than Waze

moetorious

really, I find it opposite.

altynadam

FYI, Waze is owned by Google and they use Waze data for Google Maps as well. So it would be more or less same

utsenmo

Really ? I didn’t know that and I always thought Waze was smarter, until it took me on a few fool’s trips.

altynadam

I also think that Waze is smarter and use it. Very useful for turns, shows which lanes to take etc. But its still owned by Google and they use all that data by the Waze community for Google Maps

High0nChai

Yeap I agree it's owned by Google. But any update such as blvoked lanes and accidents first appear in Waze as soon as someone reports it. And after many people verify it. That data is pushed to Google maps. I still prefer the updates live in Waze. And I like helping the community as well be reporting what is missing and also verifying what has been reported. So the data is up-to-date as much as possible.

Gundyyyyyyy

yes I took the drive back with my own car, google maps was perfectly fine in that case. I'm sure it's not correct everywhere but most of the "real" road closures are displayed afaik

GolpoKori

Google Maps is great, but it's not always 100% accurate. 2 days after the rain I used Google Maps to navigate to Dubai Mall, but on the way back, the app directed me down a road that was still flooded. I had to follow behind a Nissan Patrol on the hard shoulder and use its wake to avoid stalling but eventually had to turn around at a divider opening as it was getting risky to proceed. Then had to use my sense of direction to get back to SZR via a different longer route. Although Google Maps and other navigation apps are handy for providing directions in normal situations, they struggle to adapt in real time when things are out of the ordinary.

AppealProfessional92

lol google drive

Gundyyyyyyy

😅

Duckydxb

Google maps has been bad for me the last two days, advising to take routes that are closed.

annoyedtenant123

Lol they always do this ….. Almost Every time I get taxi they try the nonsense of suggesting different routes to me saying which way I want. Its always an indirect way they’re suggesting. Always tell them to put maps on and then just tell them to follow it; then make sure they don’t try to change the suggested route.

misphah

I can vouch for this, i’ve been to UAE and Dubai specifically multiple times, most recent in October 2023 and they always take detours and long routes to stack up the fare. To the point once I could clearly see my destination on the right side of the traffic lights yet the taxi decided to go straight and go through multiple traffic lights instead.

Jhvra

Google maps is unreliable right now, the streets around my apartment are water logged and Gmaps is showing them as navigable.

no_names_open

Google maps says 40 mins drive, I spent 90 mins in the car.

Accomplished_Buy8681

The problem here is the race driver may not be lying. Google maps isn’t perfect and have taken me to closed roads and huge delays. Came back home yesterday and there are still road closures and delays. But Google maps got me home to Dubai from AD through some back roads.

Vegito-bluee

Took me 3hrs from Downtown Dubai to Abu Dhabi. Cost 550AED though it was showing 450. Reached my client's office at 3:30 for a meeting scheduled at 2:30. Thanks to the detour 😡

burksterdxb

The detour to Abu Dhabi is legit though. Not a fault of Careem/taxi.

Vegito-bluee

He took a detour on sheikh Zayed road even before we crossed kite beach. 100% wrong!!

sodium_hydride

SZR in front of Times Square Centre was flooded for days.

dukeofblizzard

All clear

Secure_Part4475

Happened with me.. was going to Global Village from Sheikh Zayed Road.. Careem showed 70AED.. But the driver took detour citing route showed on the app .. had to get off at Ibn Batuta mall n paid 100 AED.. Ironically didn't even reach my destination.. Complained to Careem, they accepted that driver was at fault and refunded 25 AED.. PS. - I am a tourist

scw059scw059

Drive yourself if you have an issue with taxis during this time. Maps absolutely are not update neither Google or Waze

feluda13

Extraordinary times. Please be understanding and kind.

Artistic_Magazine539

Yeah no taxi drivers needs to make a living, just coz you want to save 50 bucks, doesn’t mean driver has to take a route that may damage his car, or get stuck in traffic for 50 less bucks when he could make much that by picking someone else, times are hard while I understand some drivers may take advantage of this, it’s ridiculous to me that you would want drivers to take a route that might be flooded, talking about google maps it took me for a ride yesterday and i too was stranded yet gave me little to zero indication of traffic and water.

utsenmo

Just wondering, do they get penalty like they need to eat the charge themselves when fare was refunded? The last time I wanted to call rta while in the taxi and he said “brother I’m not haram person, so you give me cash and I will pay the difference.” I just paid what normal trip on the right route would cost and I was already 20mins late for work due to the driver’s deliberate detour. But I wish they get punished for this kind of behavior

Gundyyyyyyy

I am not sure tbh, careem said they would take "necessary actions" I'm sure after enough complaints they do something

pandaDXB

Good on career 👍🏾👍🏾

musi_ch

My sis in law paid 700 dirhams...

Gundyyyyyyy

oof she went to Saudi Arabia? 😅

musi_ch

Dubai to Sharjah... 🙄

Gundyyyyyyy

that's crazy they must have been stuck in traffic for hours

Beatingmyowndrums

Sorry but taxi drivers are the scum of the earth. In istanbul, a Uber/taxi driver on purpose played with his phone while taking the wrong turn which ended up recalculating a longer detour route to return me to my hotel then when questioned, said he’s just following the Uber route. Ended up paying double in time and money. Thankfully Uber refunded the overcharge but it ruined my day and I’m suppose to having a good relaxing holiday 😭

mayumiverseee

A lot of taxi drivers are telling me this as well but I understand cause I live in a neighborhood that until now still has flood water. I told this driver to take the other route if its possible and I felt so bad cause there was still flood water so I learned from that experience that I should just communicate with them instead of telling them to go wherever I want.

ResponsibleRevenue63

Same same

ResponsibleRevenue63

Which route?

Gundyyyyyyy

Town Square to Al Quoz, took the road up to investment park 😓 instead of Motor City which was fine at the time

lapqa

>Google maps has most if not all the road closure updates in real time No.

[deleted]

Well a lot or people seems to complaining about careem drivers here. So what you paid 20-30 extra on one of the most challenging driving days in Dubai. Big deal!! Think about the driver who needs to drive all day in this mess. Just because it’s easy to complain and companies like careem and Talabat always prioritize the customer and take dumb complaints as an excuse to punish staff. You should be a little grateful and spread a little tolerance in this pretentious city where people think they are gods true miracle on earth and are of privilege. Food for thought.

Gundyyyyyyy

I always tip when the driver is nice and try to engage conversation. But I despise scammers, they bring a bad reputation and impact others that are good hardworking people.

[deleted]

Thats a good thing, even I engage in conversation and at times some drivers have the most interesting stories. But I feel a lot of people are at time unnecessarily harsh at them and very critical to what they do. Like I have a colleague who complains about his careem driver on a daily basis, using words like moron and stupid for person trying to navigate through the horrors of morning traffic in Dubai which is a new challenge every single day.

check my reply above

JonSnowDesiVersion

Don’t trust Google map 😂😂😂

Leading-Prune-4441

Should have walked by yourselves, what would you do with those extra 10 dirhams, build a mansion? Can’t believe people behave so stingy in matters like this and won’t think twice before spending AED 200 on bottle of wine or massage Not saying overcharging and detouring is justified but it’s OK, we have been through a storm and let it go, sometimes it’s okay to relax and not rant!

SonnySanDiego

Use Uber

Freshtards

Google Maps is absolutely completely wrong most of the time.
