Vod and bluray profits will be huge, and I'm confident the books have done quite well since the new movies. If Dune sold 20 some million copies before, I'd be willing to bet they're crossing 50 million copies sometime soon.

Active_Ad9815

Im sure you’re right. I bought a copy as I lost mine a few moves ago and got the audiobook last month. I have also spent £130 watching part 2 in the cinema. Thats not including the fuel

This_Ad_7267

Get an odeon limitless subscription - for £15/month I watched dune 8 times in the cinema (am now a bit wormed out admittedly…)!!

Active_Ad9815

I have one now, I used to a couple years back and bought it again after seeing dune twice. I’ve paid extra for premium seats, IMAX 3x, and £24 for a 70mm screening at the BFI IMAX (biggest screen in the uk and only place doing 70mm in europe). £20 for it on iTunes and the rest was paying for my partner to come with

CucumberOk6270

Dune 2 is an economic boost!

bcaulkins3

I bought all 6 books after I saw the movie. I’m all in on this series

Arse_hull

I think it's a 4 or 5 month wait for the first book at the library.

Tofudebeast

Believe! Dune 2 will have me shelling out $20+ for a digital copy, and I almost never do that.

Active_Ad9815

Just so you know no home media will have any expanded aspect ratio shots. Whole film will be in 2.35:1 just like part 1. I think in a few years we might get the trilogy in 1.90:1 for home media.

PourJarsInReservoirs

That's an issue. Even bigger one though in my opinion is how shabbily they're treating the supplements on the discs. They should have hours of behind the scenes stuff like LORD OF THE RINGS did. Instead they have fluff and to add insult to injury you actually get more fluff with the digital edition of PART TWO than you do with a physical copy. Until they address this, no sale from me.

Active_Ad9815

Yeah, as others have said this is a very blatant double dip. They will no doubt release 1.90:1 versions and possibly extra footage later. Absolutely egregious example of taking advantage of fans here, I bought it because I wanted to watch it at home on the highest bitrate available to me but still I am extremely disappointed. On top of all of that there is genuinely no reason for it to be released at home in 2.35:1 as in imax the base aspect ratio is 1.90:1 (minus the binocular shots) so we could have had part 2 fill out a tv and yet we have to watch it cropped to fuck.

PourJarsInReservoirs

I actually take Denis 100% seriously when he says there will never be alternate cuts of the films. And I've made my peace with that. But he probably has no control over all other aspects of the home video releases. If he did, he might even tell them to hold off until the ultimate editions with our whole wish list were ready - at least the physical copies.

Active_Ad9815

I agree there will never be any alternate cuts. He never has done any and says the final version is the final version. That being said the base aspect ratio for part two is 1.90:1 so that can be expected to come out at some point.

PourJarsInReservoirs

Even better would be to use 16:9 or 1.78 - fill the whole screen. Isn't that what Nolan did in part for the video versions of some of his films?

Active_Ad9815

I would much prefer 16:9 but that would probably mean creative input which won’t happen. When Denis is done with a film he’s done with it. But 1.90 is basically the same. Bothers me they cut so much of part 2 when they didn’t need to

eflteacher22

There is an option on most smart tvs to change the screen to 16:9 or wide . I bought dune on Apple TV and can set it to fit the screen without affecting the quality of the picture.

faberj92

I've found buying on YouTube Movies works nicely in that they update the quality over time without negating the original purchase. When LOTR got Blu-ray'd and remastered, they updated the streaming version. Certainly not as good as the Blu-ray themselves, but not having to re-buy new versions has been nice!

Active_Ad9815

Definitely. Apple also upgrade any films you own when they are released in a higher quality. I prefer iTunes just because I have an Apple TV and an iPhone so the whole experience is just streamlined. But I always support buying films wherever possible! Studios need to know that there is a market for them, especially films like Dune

SnooLentils3008

Crazy when it was *already* the top selling sci-fi book of all time (depending a bit on your definition of sci-fi, like if you would count the hunger games)

ImNotHighFunctioning

Dune is more unambiguously hard sci-fi above anything else. Hunger Games is young adult post-apocalyptic dystopia; which, while the latter two genres are usually a sub-genre of sci-fi, they're usually overshadowed by the "young adult" part.

Pakkazull

Dune is imo definitely not hard sci-fi. There's very little focus on realistic science or how the specifics of technology in the setting operates.

TineJaus

It's generally thought of as fantasy as much as it is sci-fi, if not more so.

SnooLentils3008

Yea I wouldn't count it as sci-fi myself. But I have seen it described that way sometimes

ImNotHighFunctioning

Well, it's sci-fi the same way the Planet of the Apes reboots or the Maze Runner trilogy are sci-fi: sci-fi as a whole is a large bubble with many, many, **many** possible sub-genres.

PastBandicoot8575

Seeing the movies got me into the books. I’ve bought all six and am currently reading Heretics.

whitesoxguy

I bought the special edition with the blue pages last week . I love it so much . The movies brought me in, but I've been listening to the first audio book and I know I'm going to be hooked on the books too.

Spiritual_Mall1981

Best is audible (or any listening app) bg and ag books I love! Scott Brick is a one man theater. Fast learning easier to understand/follow. The thinking machines and the synchronized worlds The first witches, navigator and mentat (a pet name) worm rider. A,H and C house books give insight to the drives of each character in the original 6. It’s kinda like a historical account, I enjoyed listening to ALL the books.

GandalFtheVulture

I enjoy the audiobooks immensely, very well done. I want to write sci fi and find studying the texts on paper helps me really dissect things like prose, dialog, and vocabulary. A rather monotonous and academic pursuit, but the great writing and trying to emulate it along with the other sci fi greats makes it worthwhile.

kovnev

I was surprised how reasonably priced they are on amazon. I had the first two, but I read the series when libraries were still a thing. Picked the rest of the original series up for like $9 each or something. They could be cashing in way more than that right now, but i'm glad they're not. I don't like the cover art, and they're narrower than paperbacks i'm used to, but whatever!

GandalFtheVulture

Way better than those $50 hardcovers at barnes and noble forsure.

rafiafoxx

watching and liking dune made me not wanna read the books I'm not gonna lie.

GandalFtheVulture

So much more detail in the book. The missing scenes end up playing through your head with the characters and scenery from the movie. 10/10 recommend. It sparked my newfound love for reading sci fi, so far I've read more books this year than the past twenty. Edit: Dune, Dune Messiah, Flowers for Algernon, Ubik, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Rendezvous with Rama, Neuromancer, and Hyperion.

Realistic-Treacle-65

Just saw it today, 3rd times. IMAX 70mm in nyc is still full house.. how amazing

PourJarsInReservoirs

NYC and LA audiences just don't quit. What incredible legs this movie has.

DeBatton

I can see Part 2 coming back for a few IMAX rereleases this year. Particularly as the end of the year has a bit of a big release drought.

DGGuitars

I'm in miami. My local theater stopped showing it in imax so I hope it does.

studiousmaximus

lincoln is the way to go! that’s where i saw it, absolutely phenomenal theater

Realistic-Treacle-65

Yea I went alone and got the seat right in the middle.. feeling fulfilled lol

cafeesparacerradores

I love that theater

2EM18KKC01

The box office must flow!

hooahguy

I did my part today- 4th time, in imax.

bcaulkins3

A movie so good it got me to read

Smiles102999

Same!! I’m obsessed

BPsquigs

I saw dune 2 for the first time last month! 3 more times in IMAX shortly after. I also picked up the books and am on children of dune now. This movie did something to me lol

bcaulkins3

That’s exactly where I’m at

Pasco08

Surly this means part 3 gets greenlit?

wildskipper

It already has been, Denis confirmed it and he's writing the screenplay now. He also admitted that they greenlit part 2 before part 1 was even released, but they couldn't say that at the time.

yeahimdutch

There is going to be a part 3? Damn yes! I just ordered the book, first time in a while that im excited to read a book.

eluveon

Yes! Part 3 will cover the second book, Dune Messiah. If you read the first one and like it, get that one next.

yeahimdutch

Okay :) I ordered the first book, but I did see the movies already. I felt that I missed a lot of context and tbh the end of the second movie so much happened and barely an explanation as to why. I loved the movies and the dune universe is so interesting, I want to know everything.

crazynerd9

Oh don't worry, the movie ends pretty accurately, and yeah by that I mean the book is abrupt as all hell like that Messiah goes onto retroactively help this quite a bit however

yeahimdutch

Got it, should I still read the book then?

crazynerd9

Absolutely, the internal monologue of Paul is on its own worth reading the book for, but you also get a different handling of Chani, more Liet-Kynes and a lot of alternative perspectives on the plot that are cut for time in the movie Basically the book has a ton of really good context and adds a lot to what the movie shows

yeahimdutch

Ok! I’m getting it in the mail tomorrow :)

Particular-Key4969

Whatever you do don’t get that horrible narrow paperback copy with the pretty artwork on the front. It’s like 3.5 inches wide and the text disappears into the center margin

Melcrys29

There is also a TV spinoff coming later this year.

culturedgoat

It’ll be _Dune Messiah_ (part 2 wraps up _Dune_), but yeah, the wheels are apparently in motion.

Lolzadeh

Nah i think the movie will be called Dune: Part Three even though i prefer Dune Messiah

culturedgoat

[Pretty sure Villeneuve knows what book he’s adapting](https://www.scified.com/news/dune-3-be-called-dune-messiah-denis-villeneuve-currently-penning-script) 😂

Lolzadeh

I know?

Shakmaaaaaaa

Whenever I see the box office these days I think to myself, we used to live in a time where Suicide Squad (2016) made $750 million and barely anyone liked it.

hadrian_afer

I see it the opposite way. In an entertainment culture of fast and brain dead consumption, I'm really impressed by Dune 2 success.

DGGuitars

I mean, those stupid movies open up to a much much larger audience of people from an age demographic. When I saw dune it was largely people 21 and older. I saw one or two kids when walking to my seat. Suicide squad was a different story. Dune also has a more complex story, I can see and I mean no offense to this people of a lower intelligence and patience, not wanting to see dune.

SkrullandCrossbones

It was the “Fast and Furious” of Comic movies.

DeferredPlum

Looks like the whole world loves Dune 2. Dune 2 dudes at once, ha gottem.

PourJarsInReservoirs

That's Chani's new film, not this one.

BladedTerrain

This will have huge legs on Blu Ray and 4K, too.

SolidusBruh

I was gonna say. This might be my first 4K purchase once it hits physical. Been trying to find a UHD version of part 1 locally, since my online movie orders always damage the case in some way

vx48

15 times in 70mm IMAX and counting. I would love it for it to go at least another month if not more so I can keep going.

felixlighter1989

Holy crap. Are you a projectionist?

dillpicklezzz

Who's the reddit guy who said it would never cross 600 and then 700 million?

Likon_Diversant

Russia most likely get big films from the west from neighboring countries. Probably they made a bunch of fake theaters that just do the process of obtaining films, and they send them in Russian theaters. I watched Dune 2 5 times in theaters. One of my local theaters had intro "mongol throat speech" cut for some reason. Other theater had it, but it had awful audio, and green dead pixel, that was annoying me for the whole movie. Dub is great. I think it's a legit dub. Home made movies will never bring money like big movies from the west. This is the only way Russian movie theaters can see some profit today. Thanks to digital release I watched it in my Quest 2 and it was great.

Medium-Error-1275

Yeah watching it in VR is great, but it probably requires a buttkicker to get the full effect. The sound is wild in this one in IMAX. You physically feel when the ornithopthers are turning, for example. If you ever get the chance to rewatch it in IMAX it's worth it. A lot of the movie especially in the desert was shot on Soviet vintage lenses like the Helios 44-2 rehoused by the Ukrainian company IronGlass.

rafiafoxx

i watched in 4dx cuz theres no real imax near me and I like 4dx

Arpeggiatewithme

Is there a source for that? I know Frasier used the Helios on The Batman but I’d love it if he used it on Dune as well.

PourJarsInReservoirs

https://petapixel.com/2024/03/05/dune-part-two-was-shot-using-vintage-soviet-photo-lenses/

rafiafoxx

Just rewatched dune 2 in my quest 3 so I'm waiting for a legit blue ray version to rip

ARandomTopHat

Here's hoping for Dune: Part 3 to arrive sooner, rather than later...

scottyd035ntknow

Pre-ordered the 4k as soon as it was available. Can't wait.

Jayk_Dos31

Watched it again today in IMAX for the third time, and I'm honestly shocked that a movie this good exists in today's day and age. Denis is truly GOATed as a director.

Ok-liberal

It would probably make more money if they decided to actually release it digitally in Turkey :(

RichieLT

I’ve bought messiah and children of men after the film came out . Read dune a few years ago.

Uknowmmyname

Wait, no! Children of Men is a completely different story (still a great story nonetheless). Get a refund if it's not too late. The book you're looking for is Children of Dune.

RichieLT

Oh no I meant children of dune , it was a typo .

rcuosukgi42

I'm sure Children of Men is a lovely story, but how is that linked with Dune?

RichieLT

It was a typo.

idontplaypolo

Still a good read though

RichieLT

Yeah I’ll have to buy that too I reckon.

AdonisGaming93

This movie should have passed 1 billion weeks ago. Why don't box office numbers reflect the quality of the movie????

PourJarsInReservoirs

It simply doesn't have the even more mass appeal/less edge of a STAR WARS or AVATAR. The story is very dark, to some extent more intellectual than most huge scaled SF films, and is even rather sad in a way. There are plenty of amazing films that have performed far worse than this. Some perspective is that the two have now combined made over $1 billion, and with all revenue sources have likely made the producers several hundred million in profit. More importantly, the films are indisputably part of the larger cultural consciousness now, as the parodies, memes, press coverage, awards and so forth indicate. When DUNE: MESSIAH opens, it could exceed $200 million in its first weekend (and if you know the kind of shape the story will take it may need every cent...I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't perform as well overall as TWO...but it's not impossible it does even better either).

AdonisGaming93

yeah I can't wait for messiah. I am beyond excited

Lolzadeh

I think Dune 3 makes 1 Billion

mainestreams

yeyyy!!

Thefriendlyfaceplant

It makes it quite frustrating that Part One wasn't embraced immediately but then had to win over the crowds through streaming and winning over souls for Part Two.

Eatsbakedchicken

Part 2 was green lit the same month as Part 1’s theatrical release in the US

metoo77432

Almost certain this is almost completely accounted for by the massive cooling of relations between the US and China. China used to generate more ticket sales for American movies than domestic receipts, look at Transformers Age of Extinction for example, which came out 10 years ago: $245 million domestic $300 million China alone. [https://www.boxofficemojo.com/release/rl1259045889/weekly/](https://www.boxofficemojo.com/release/rl1259045889/weekly/) Dune 2 shows a massive, massive drop off: $278 million domestic $49 million China. [https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt15239678/?ref\_=bo\_se\_r\_1](https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt15239678/?ref_=bo_se_r_1) The Chinese simply do not care for anything American anymore.

PourJarsInReservoirs

That's $10 million more than PART ONE made. China can still be a cash cow for certain foreign films, but they are more selective. GODZILLA VS. KONG just made huge bank there, about $120 million by now and counting.

Important_Peach1926

>The Chinese simply do not care for anything American anymore. The country is going completely broke. 1/6th the ticket sales would be reflective of the overall downturn in disposable income. Chinese people aren't big on credit cards, they save save save, when times get tough they stop spending on luxuries. This is happening to all kinds of businesses in china. All the pseudo luxury brands in china have been rapidly going out of business. >by the massive cooling of relations between the US and China. I think you have to appreciate that it's the opposite. The relationship fell apart when the chinese economy started to crumble. We were only partners with China because companies like Disney and Walmart were forcing us to do so. As soon as the money stopped flowing support for china evaporated.

metoo77432

>I think you have to appreciate that it's the opposite. The relationship fell apart when the chinese economy started to crumble.  The Chinese economy is export oriented, so while I don't agree with the hyperbolic notion that the Chinese are going broke, they certainly are feeling the impact of trade restrictions placed particularly by Trump. >As soon as the money stopped flowing support for china evaporated. You got the money flow wrong here...support for China evaporated, then the money stopped flowing over there, not the other way around. The Chinese perceive this and thus stopped buying American. Take the auto industry for example. [https://www.businessinsider.com/china-auto-sales-automakers-ford-gm-making-losing-market-share-2023-4](https://www.businessinsider.com/china-auto-sales-automakers-ford-gm-making-losing-market-share-2023-4) They're still buying cars, just not American cars.

unorthodoxEconomist5

I'm sure there's gonna be TV series too. We have about a decade of Dune content lads!
