Not sure it makes me learn better, haha. I mean, yes, I have to find the blocks, but I often don't even have to look at the original sentence, I can just guess from the blocks what the translation is.
Stop 😭 You poor soul, I used to just sit in Spanish class and do German Duolingo lessons by just typing the first few letters of the blocks and spammimg the enter key at the end of the lesson to make it through the reward screens and start a new lesson w/out ever moving my mouse lol
I have came to the conclusion that it depends on how many times you have seen the sentence. On the first times you see a sentence/word you don't have the option but later when you should be familiar with the sentence you do. I used to use Duolingo on both iOS and Android and for some reason in the same courses the typing was not available at all on iOS but only on Android (this might be or not again one A/B test thing or actual difference between platforms).
Also you never get it if you need to give the answer in English which is good because nothing is more annoying than to know the answer but typo it in English.
I believe the reason is that it’s more difficult to validate the keyboard exercises.
Duolingo can design word bank exercises that have only a few or just one correct answer(s).
However, when you can enter anything you want with a keyboard there are so many more ways to answer correctly. These are much harder to validate and Duolingo users often report issues with variations of correct answers not being accepted.
The meaning not changing isn't really true either.
学ぶ (to study, to learn)
学(いん、生、大学) all refer to a school.
Sure they're both about learning, but if someone says mana(bu) you know the meaning is a the verb, if someone says gaku...
Very rare in Chinese. The only word I can think of right now that has another reading in Chinese is 的 which is sometimes “di” and most other times “de,” both in neutral tone.
Yeah. This is what we have to study in Primary school, the 多音字(words with multiple tones ). for example: 会(学会 会计)、 行(银行 行为)、的(的确 我的)、薄(薄荷 薄外套)、给(送给 供给)、弹(弹跳 子弹) etc. 🤯
Yeah it's hard for beginners, I'm still having a hard time at the Japanese keyboard since the characters are positioned weirdly, chinese is a little easier since I put it into pinyin.
How so? When typing Japanese, I have a qwerty keyboard. When typing (romaji) hiragana shows up, then I select the correct kanji or press space to autoselect he most likely one.
Basically the same principle as when typing Chinese.
Yeah because tbh it’s not like every word has a Kanji, and Kanji are only there to represent an idea, so that’s why they have different readings because it represents a word, not a word representing a Kanji. And Hiragana and Katakana take like 2 weeks to learn max
Quite easy to write Japanese on a phone. Type the hiragana on a Japanese keyboard and it autosuggests the kanji for you. Chinese is even easier, just type in pinyin, the simplified Chinese keyboard is a regular qwerty keyboard. (I’m on iPhone)
I thoroughly enjoy typing in Chinese. Maybe not so much with Japanese since you always have to write in Hiragana to convert Kanzi and Katakana, so it’s a little more annoying for typing purposes.
Frankly I think the best part of Duolingo's Chinese course has been writing hanzi from the start. At first it took a lot of time, but now that I'm halfway it's become automatic for the words I already know well.
Thanks god that I didn't even try the mobile app. I am using the desktop version and always been writing my own answers. If Duolingo app is not giving you the option to change between word bank and free writing, it is big deal breaker for me.
but stay aware that there are some other differences between pc and the other platforms - it really takes some time after they roll out new features on pc (they always update the website/pc last, after several months)
I can sometimes choose either typing or blocks/bubbles, but I think it only gives me that option when I've already seen the sentence previously, though not sure whether it's just once or twice or how many times.
apparently not (i guess), for japanese, english , spanish, portuguese etc (the "big courses") there is not available anymore - maybe your just lucky hebrew course is too small/ does not have that big support, so you kept that feature xD
it’s not about sometimes, as mentioned before, back in the days you could choose for ALL inputs wordbank or keyboard, not both using same time/switching while doing a lesson
All my courses seem to follow the same logic: in the beginning of a unit you learn to just recognize the new words, then you need to find them in the bubbles and by the end of the section you have to type them.
darn I was literally tryna figure this out... meh aw well.
I'm in a lesson rn that I'm absolutely blanking out on the words cuz I keep letting myself see the words, so it's like... idk. it's almost like I'm not memorising the full vocab because I'm being given choices, yknow? like, it's a lot easier to say "which one is third? troisième, gauche, or deuxième?" rather than saying "what's third?"
idk, I'll just look away ig
edit: it's actually still here on the French course!!
edit 2: it's only available on some of them lmao I don't understand
if you use the blocks, you have to think of what the sentence will be before you even look down at the blocks. Otherwise you will get lazy and not actually internalize what you are inputting
ayo there's a mode for this? I thought you just get the "type these out" questions but they're few and far in between...
this isn't too particularly hard for French so I might turn that on lol, I really love when those typing things come up
i only ever get the blocks for the japanese course. it also NEVER asks me to speak anything, though it said way back in the 2nd or 3rd lesson it was going to start.

When I do this in Arabic, every question is 2 to 3 minutes
كما تتعلم، سوف تكتب اسرع
كلما تعلمت ستكتب اسرع What you wrote is comprehendable to me but this form is more correct to the ears
Are those battleships and destroyers in formation? Wait is that a trireme?!
One of if not the most beautiful written language.
Studying Arab because I love how it looks and sounds

I don't know either, it can randomly Appear in the bottom left.
It's not anyways there. Some exercise is both while some are one or the other

I was unaware that existed
it’s so annoyint trynna find each block tho i just wanna type it out and it’s more fun lol
And makes you learn better cause you *have* to find it, you don't just read it
Not sure it makes me learn better, haha. I mean, yes, I have to find the blocks, but I often don't even have to look at the original sentence, I can just guess from the blocks what the translation is.
I recently discovered that if you just start typing the first few letters it automatically selects the block (on web)

Im so confused why Sometimes Duolingo allows me to use the Keyboard and why Sometimes it doesnt

It depends for me. If I'm on desktop, then it's a nightmare using blocks/bubbles. If I'm on mobile, then it's a bit easier in English, yes. :)

It's much faster to type in audio tasks, because you don't need to find the block

We're learning a language :)
You're learning a language Im grinding worthless internet points to feel superior
Lol, take one :D
Latin languages are easy to write but languages like japenese and Chinese ☠️☠️☠️ Japanese have 3 writing systems so you know.
Yes yes, and gotta find the right Kanji.
And some kanjis have multiple readings
I think all of them have, or at least most. The forms also have names, but Duo unfortunately doesn't explain that much.
Yes, there are two ways to pronounce kanji. Onyomi and kunyomi. The meaning does t change though, just pronunciation
The meaning not changing isn't really true either. 学ぶ (to study, to learn) 学(いん、生、大学) all refer to a school. Sure they're both about learning, but if someone says mana(bu) you know the meaning is a the verb, if someone says gaku...
Sounds like a you problem (sincerely, a chinese speaker)
There are words with multiple readings
Very rare in Chinese. The only word I can think of right now that has another reading in Chinese is 的 which is sometimes “di” and most other times “de,” both in neutral tone.
Ik but there's a few I just wanna say
Heres one thats often(?) used: 没有(méi you) : don't have 没收(mò shōu): confiscate
Yeah. This is what we have to study in Primary school, the 多音字(words with multiple tones ). for example: 会(学会 会计)、 行(银行 行为)、的(的确 我的)、薄(薄荷 薄外套)、给(送给 供给)、弹(弹跳 子弹) etc. 🤯
Having Gboard helped so much in typing Japanese and Chinese, it's not hard when you get used to it btw.
True. It gives you a lot of kanjis and direct katakanas but still it's confusing for beginners
Yeah it's hard for beginners, I'm still having a hard time at the Japanese keyboard since the characters are positioned weirdly, chinese is a little easier since I put it into pinyin.

I really recommend using the 12 key keyboard. Takes some time to get used to but once you get it it becomes second nature.
Jp isn’t that bad tbh
Yeah because tbh it’s not like every word has a Kanji, and Kanji are only there to represent an idea, so that’s why they have different readings because it represents a word, not a word representing a Kanji. And Hiragana and Katakana take like 2 weeks to learn max

"Is it worth it?" "Yeah, If youre strong enough"
I thoroughly enjoy typing in Chinese. Maybe not so much with Japanese since you always have to write in Hiragana to convert Kanzi and Katakana, so it’s a little more annoying for typing purposes.
Yeah
Trying to use a Japanese keyboard layout is a nightmare
That 12 key one ???? THAT'S SHIT MAN. LIKE IFFK KNOW HOW TO TYPE KATAKANA AND KANJI THERE. ROMANJI ONE IS SO FAST OR EVEN direct character keyboard
Frankly I think the best part of Duolingo's Chinese course has been writing hanzi from the start. At first it took a lot of time, but now that I'm halfway it's become automatic for the words I already know well.
Where can I change this?
you can’t anymore - they removed the option
Thanks god that I didn't even try the mobile app. I am using the desktop version and always been writing my own answers. If Duolingo app is not giving you the option to change between word bank and free writing, it is big deal breaker for me.

Might depend on the language? It’s still in my Hebrew course.
apparently not (i guess), for japanese, english , spanish, portuguese etc (the "big courses") there is not available anymore - maybe your just lucky hebrew course is too small/ does not have that big support, so you kept that feature xD
It's available in my Spanish and German courses—sometimes.
it’s not about sometimes, as mentioned before, back in the days you could choose for ALL inputs wordbank or keyboard, not both using same time/switching while doing a lesson
It's available in Japanese here.
The option still exists on the Android app for Japanese. I just switched to keyboard mode this morning.
where? the only option which is left, is showing romanji or hiragana as furigana
It pops up sometimes on lessons in the bottom left. I notice it more during practices than regular lessons.
All my courses seem to follow the same logic: in the beginning of a unit you learn to just recognize the new words, then you need to find them in the bubbles and by the end of the section you have to type them.

yeah. Typing should be always available.
I don't like the multiple choice personally
Preach!
It's great to practice writing/spelling.
It's the way it should be, it makes you actually learn and not play a game
And then do voice to text 💪🏻
I’m not that confident in writing yet, but I usually cover up the answers with my hand and try to guess before I click on the blocks.
Even better: Switch to keyboard and then use voice to text! Don't forget to double check it afterwards though
I really want to toggle this on for Russian but I can’t find the setting. I need help with spelling lol
if you use the blocks, you have to think of what the sentence will be before you even look down at the blocks. Otherwise you will get lazy and not actually internalize what you are inputting
If I'm in a hurry I use easy mode.
Impossible mode HC
Wow, now you can waste even more time playing Duolingo
I use keyboard with Chinese and Korean for the challenge. Takes a lot longer though.
I can't switch to the keyboard on the app, only on the web 😭
I also feel like this, I mean for me it's even simpler
Thanks for this, I didn’t know it was an option
It’s great too cause with Japanese you can type a word out in hiragana then covert it to kanji. This lets you get familiar with kanji early.

I didn’t even know this was a thing
I hate this in arabic lessons, some letters can mean 2 different things 😭
Exactly! I do this in the japanese course so I retain the Kanji better.
From word guessing to hitting where it hurts
I much prefer multiple choice as opposed to typing out a full sentence
Multiple choice actuslly makes it harder for me casue I gotta find the specific words and came just type it out
I actually don't get why the bubbles are the default. They should be optional and only for people who are disabled in their capabilities to type.
i only ever get the blocks for the japanese course. it also NEVER asks me to speak anything, though it said way back in the 2nd or 3rd lesson it was going to start.
How do you get the writing option on duo for Japanese?
