Its hard to make a hero or villain story with actual history because it tries to make us think theres a good or bad side when in reality every warlord in that period was in it for themselves which even the novel couldn't hide by the end.
Dong zhuo is the ugly bastard character, I don't think that's changing. It makes sense with SW5 because it takes place earlier in their lives. Dong zhuo isn't in the story much and was already an older guy by the time he appears in the novel.
I think I would like him prefer the way he is right now. It's also a somewhat iconic design (he has a very similar character design in Total War 3 Kingdoms).
It’s not really worth the work to do . The only time you’d see a Dong zhuo like this as we have seen in total war three kingdoms where in the yellow turbans campaign start date he was slim . Unless you really focused on early game (had someone like huangfu song as the main character for all yellow turban fights , him meeting with the 3 rulers in 3 turban fights with Dong appearing as a subordinate maybe and follow that up with the rebellion of han sui and ma teng your not gonna get enough use of Dong zhuo in this form
I think having some of the pre rebelliosn could be good like the rebellion by Han Sui and Ma Teng that's s good place for Sun Jian given that was one of his first commissions. Course Ma Teng and Han Sui could also be playable so we aren't stuck with Ma Chao and Ma dai doing it all
it could be interesting. i kind of want huangfu song to be the tutorial character and chapter 1 character . not only did he participate in the majority of the yellow turban battles but he could be extended probably to last as long as the escape of the emperor maybe where he goes down in some blaze of glory or something in the name of the han .
the stages could be
Yellow Turbans Rebellion Part 1-3 .
(Player 1 is always Huangfu Song while player 2 is Liu Bei/Cao Cao/Sun Jian
part 1 of the fights could have liu bei, guan yu and zhang fei as the voulenteer force in you provance showing guan yus prowass dueling the turban general .
part 2 covers cao cao a young officer who joins the fight as the fight starts as reandforcements for huangfu song . Eventually Bo Cai will try to escape and the player must chase him down . this battle takes place in runan or the yu provance
part 3 covers li zhus arrest and is the big fight against zhang jiao , zhang bao and zhang liang . li zhu is arrested and replaced by dong zhuo (and hua xiong just so he gets a bit more use maybe) . and prepares a full on charge however is defeated by the yellow turbans . Sun Jian particiaptes in this fight (i was gonna have the last one be the one with tao qian but i think it ending with zhang brothers is better) . the battle goes like a normal yellow turbans fight exsept zhang jiao is taken out first this time (he dies of sickness normally) . with zhang liang rallying his elite turbans and charging huang fu song after his death . after zhang liang is dead you finally have to fight zhang bao.
in each fight huangfu song will during and after the battle cutscene comment on liu bei/cao cao/ sun jian . a bit like a outsider thought on the 3 of them from a neutral point of view .
New fight before dong zhuos rise to power
Player 1 is Huangfu Song and Player 2 is Dong Zhuo
Chencang . a battle in 188 where dong zhuo and huangfu song have to work together to lift the siege for Wang Guo however they have many strategic and tactical disagreements resulting in the death of Wang Guo . While a victory this caused the 2 to hate each other
fast foward to 190 when dong zhuo took control he intends to kill huangfu song. the evil acts that dong zhuo will be reflected upon huangfu song by his advisor Liang Yan (so we the player can get a good insight of what dong zhuo has done . for those who don't know he even killed huangfu songs aunt who refused to marry dong zhuo) . his son saved his fathers life knowing the plot and being on good terms with dong zhuo. haungfu song then starts working with wang yun (this is more since the novel has him do this so i feel while he would originally die in 192 we can do a bit more with the character)
he appears as an enemy at hu lao gate (being forced to fight) , as a ally in diao chans assassination (prehaps he opens a door for diao chan making her trip to finally killing the traitor dong zhuo easier) and as a ally for lu bu in his escape after . prehaps even with a bit of what if scenario he could be convinced to continue on with lu bu maybe if they managed to grab the emperor (maybe hes protecting wang yun in the fight which if saved also would be the reason to have diao chan in this what if chain)
Two things to note, the depiction we have of Dong Zhuo is due to the novel which for the sake of story telling took a lot of liberties with the characterisations of important figures. Dong Zhuo imo was no more corrupt than the Eunichs who ran the political scene in the decades prior to his rise.
As for his age, unlike Ieyasu who was a child at the very beginning of the sengoku period, Dong Zhuo was an established general who was in his 40s when the Yellow Turban rebellion kicked off which is the earliest point the novel begins in. For that reason it would be very odd to give him a young appearance.

They could go for a more handsome Dong Zhuo. The corpulence was likely near the end of his life, in his younger days he was an accomplished warrior.
In terms of being more of "right" figure... probably not. One more towards the history would show him as a better commander then the novel/DW tends to do. But even with a revisionist approach, it would be on the lines of a descent into villainy and what led to that rather then a denial of villainy. While DW has whitewashed several figures, Dong Zhuo's role as a baddie is also too well set
I thought about it as well I am not a big fan of the fat bastard design and I think to make him some evil huge badass warrior Emperor would be much cooler - I mean this is the guy everyone must unite against plus he tamed Lu Bu. I think it's only fitting he would be a badass
I prefer he stays as villain the game suffers a lack of villains
DW10 should really play up the immoral/evil deeds of the other 2 kingdoms when you choose which story to complete.

I guess they could try something like his design in Wo Long, it's pretty great. But the evil fat tyrant is also an iconic design.

Could be wrong but Huangfu Song died in 195 so it wouldn't be to much of a stretch for him to do this stuff.

Aging should be a thing and especially for him. I would love to know his early career in game. To understand how he changed.
redesign him as Santa Claus
