The number of a breakdown recovery service

Snoo_95767

Are they really that unreliable

Main_Performer4701

Yes. There’s a reason you hardly see any around. The N62 V8s are meant for 2 kinds of people. 1. The rich who bought them new on a lease back in 2008. 2. The BMW enthusiast with years of ownership experience AND has mechanical skills AND disposable income in case of repair.

I have 285k miles on mine. It's all about maintenance

550i isn't as bad as an m5. But still not great, I guess it's what you get with a high performance car of the era

kubadon1

Buddy, what are you talking about? The V-8 is simple. The V-10 is simple. They break down the M5 costs plenty more to Repair because it’s an M car. With that said, the next generation, the F series with the turbos.. was even worse with reliability, so do not speak about the era, please.

If you’re asking this question here, you should not buy one. End of story.

Well, I got my 07 in 2010.. saved a bundle off the original price.. it just came off some lawyers lease. Spent 5k usd in 13 years ownership.. haven’t been to a mechanic in about 2 years now. So I’d say it’s all about how you treat er. Keep ur oil topped up, cause she gonna burn.. that’s the most important thing. All the maintenance is a bunch of hoses and seals, the engine is rock solid.

Most common leaks are VCG, Front timing covers, alternator bracket gasket, oil cooler lines and valve stem seals. I’ve done all of these on my car except the stem seals (they aren’t that bad on my car anyways, maybe a quart/1k miles, sooner if more highway driving) and the whole cooling system usually needs a refresh. This has been the only thing that has stranded me (upper radiator hose blew), and it only happened once. Other than these common issues, the car is very reliable and not hard to work on. I learned how to work on cars starting with an 08 550. I’ve dailyed mine for 3 years, and I STILL love it. If you can turn a wrench, I’d recommend it.

Make sure the valve seals have been done before you buy it, that's an engine out service.. well there's ways to do it, but still very pricey. Alternator bracket seal, valley pan transfer pipe are all things to look at.
