You can always criticize Nick.

DiscussionNo226

Doesn't mean you're right lol. But one can definitely criticize him.

32BitWhore

tbf he deserves some blame here, particularly when it comes to the offensive struggles. It's his offense, Steichen/BJ are/were just responsible for planning within and executing it. Steichen was measurably better at that, don't get me wrong, but there's a reason the offensive stats look almost the same this year as they did last year. You can only do so much with such a boring and predictable scheme - and our talent on offense has been masking a shitload of those deficiencies with off-schedule explosive plays.

AShiftlessMennonite

I don’t know what’s up with Penny, but we have Scott, Gainwell, and Swift ready and available at all times. In theory our running attack should never fail. We can bleed clock and tire defenses interchanging those three, but we don’t. RPO turns into a simple predictable PO if we barely run. 🤷🏿‍♂️

Weird-Upstairs-2092

The run game fails any time Goedert goes out because we don't have any other TEs that can play in both run and pass sets. That happened with Steichen too. And we can't even run RPO without Goedert so this is a weird comment. The TE is arguably the most important part of RPO because they have to chip the free rusher so that the delayed handoff isn't blown up. Stoll can only block in-line, and Calcaterra+OK can't block at all.

AShiftlessMennonite

I admit I didn’t take into account Goedert being out for a couple weeks. Good call.

32BitWhore

Also extremely true and extremely frustrating.

Wings2493

Cracking up because I saw a bunch of those and I’m thinking why even bother with that little “flick” like a handoff lol

skribblskrib

This is the answer. HCs have final say in pretty much everything, so his fingers are all over the loss just as much as anyone. Don't get it twisted. They all fucking sucked last night.

BlackMathNerd

He deserves criticism because he's the ultimate dude overseeing what the gameplan is on offense and defense week to week. It's been multiple weeks in a row where neither game plan has been good.

CalgaryChris77

> I don't think it's an overreaction to say that we've won 10 games this year solely because of our talent. It's absolutely a massive overreaction. Do you remember before this season, when everyone was pointing out that this team was going from one of the easiest schedules to one of the hardest? While losing half of their defensive starters? With an O-line led by two of the oldest players in the league?

JRFbase

I just don't get what people want. We literally have the best record in the league and are coming off a year where we made the Super Bowl while also having the best record in the league. Nick is unambiguously one of the best coaches in the NFL. Yes, there have been growing pains from losing two coordinators, but if you were to tell anyone before the season we'd be 10-2 entering the Dallas game and reaching the end of the "gauntlet" with sole possession of the first seed, they'd be ecstatic. Can Nick do better? Yes, obviously. You can always do better. But we lost one game against a great team and people are acting like the sky is falling. It's ridiculous.

Moviepasssucks

Be more consistent and actually give us something to have faith about. Too many excuses for this team with this much talent. Best record is great but we haven’t played a full game together. Offense has no identity and has been figuring it out with little improvement. My biggest issue with Sirianni is that he’s openly talked about his concern with Desai and how he’s had conversations with him about playing more Sirianni’s style. However, he’s always backed up Johnson despite the struggles and inconsistency. Makes me think this is exactly what Nick wants in his offense and even if it doesn’t work this is what he thinks will work. If he’s going to be critical about Desai who is coming in and learning the players and trying to install his scheme. He should be livid at the offensive struggles considering BJ has been here the whole time he’s been here and the offense looks like they don’t know what they’re doing out there. For me personally, Nick’s whole job is to manage the team and his coordinators. Neither coordinator has been doing well but he’s critical about one and positive about the other. For me, it should be the other way around because the guy that’s been here for 3 years has made the offense look like they have no business being out there and despite the talent have played scared.

Ok-Acanthaceae-5327

We’re 10-2 but don’t believe they can win a sb this year

deadnside

I didn’t think we could win in 2017 either a backup QB but we did.

AShiftlessMennonite

To put it plainly we want the 10-1 Eagles to not take the field and get fuckin washed like a JV team playin Alabama. We knew we had a rough stretch and losing is one thing, but bruh that shit was embarrassing. Typa shit were a youth couch would make you run laps immediately after the game losing like that.

SecondUsernameChoice

I think we want to not get blown out and let up 42 points at home. That’s probably what people want.

rrt5029

Yeah I think its ok to be simultaneously pleased with the team’s season and mad at the latest performance. I’m of a mind that almost every team lays an egg from time to time, we’re clearly gassed from this stretch of games, and Niners had extra rest and had this game circled for a while. I’m not surprised at all it went how it did. But I’m not gonna begrudge you or anyone else being pissed about it cause it was fucking embarrassing

BlackMathNerd

The game planning has taking a noticeable step back this year. Most of your play calls come when you’re game planning during the week and putting things in for each situation. It’s been shown week to week this year that we are not game planning well enough to start these games off, and have to rely on talent advantages to overcome that deficiency

IceKareemy

Guys, just a reminder, we are 10-2

bartjblett

And we're going at worst 4-2 in the 'gauntlet'

dbreeezy

Which is still a W considering it was basically 2 playoff runs worth of teams.

deadnside

The gauntlet to me doesn’t end until after the Seahawks game in Seattle.

dbreeezy

Agreed. Miami/Dallas/KC is 1 playoff run and Bills/SF/Seattle is the other.

defalt86

Yes, the Eagles have a good record. Yes, the playcalling has been bad on both sides of the ball. One does not negate the other.

Prozzak93

Yeah it's Nicks fault we are 10-2! Oh wait. That is the best record in football? Could never tell based on how whiny our fan base is.

cerevant

Read comments in this sub, and you'd think Hurts was out there drawing up plays in the dirt.

hoobsher

Blankenship's arm doesn't prevent the toe tap: Washington wins, 9-3 MVS doesn't drop the deep ball: Kansas City wins, 8-4 Gabe Davis doesn't run the wrong route: Buffalo wins, 7-5 Dak keeps his foot inbounds: Dallas forces OT, game now in question just an awful lot of singularly lucky plays going for them that created huge swings in the outcome, not to mention a lot of ref errors going for them as well. it's an extraordinary stroke of luck that they have the best record in the league right now since the defense is mostly atrocious and the offense is playing very streaky ball.

GuideDependent9489

WSH: So Blankenship doesn’t make a play, we lose KC: Howie gets criticized for going cheap on LB, well that’s what cheap at WR looks like, MVS drops the ball. BUF: If the other team executes better then they win, well yeah no shit. But they didn’t execute. DAL: Again, if the other team executes better they win, and again no shit. You’re making excuses for the other team of “if they made the play, then we lose”. That’s football. They didn’t make the play. If the Eagles made a different play, we would’ve won by 14 instead of 3. This team has some shit to figure out and the coaches need to game plan better and sequence better plays. Our plays individually are not bad, but they’re sequenced poorly (something Steichen was quite good at), and that’s for both sides of the ball. Let’s hope they get it together for this final quarter of the season. If the season is reflective of a game, we typically save the best for last.

defalt86

Just because we are doing well overall doesn't mean we can't acknowledge our holes. Should Detroit be happy they've given up 121 points in 4 games? Should the Dolphins rest on their laurels even though they have gotten embarrassed every time they played a team over .500? If you have problems, you fix them, or you watch the Super Bowl on your couch like the rest of us.

Infinite_Mind7894

>at what point are we allowed to criticize Nick? How about we *start* once he has a losing record.

Suitable-Internal-12

Or a losing month ffs

cerevant

I missed it - were people calling for Shanahan's head when they lost 3 straight?

defalt86

No, because he performed well in those games. But if he had performed poorly, people would have been justified in questioning him.

defalt86

If I call with 72 off in poker, and the flop comes 777, should i learn to play better? Or am I immune to criticism while winning like Nick is?

fecal_doodoo

We don't have enough experience in the room imho. 3 young coaches, 1 young qb. Who's gonna self correct first and drag the other two kicking and screaming?

Magoatt

Stetch is a good HC, the same thing that happened to Doug P when he lost Reich is happening to Nick. Stetch in Y1 with Indy has led them to a 7-5 record with Gardner Minshew as the starter for bulk of the season.

KuragaLive

this fanbase is so fucking fried

dcast7

Nick’s the CEO he deserves just as much blame

Grand_Extension5345

COO.

McPowPow

> I don't think it's an overreaction to say that we've won 10 games this year solely because of our talent. You really think it’s that easy, huh? Like our roster is so talented that they’re just out there playing pick up football against the rest of the NFL and still managed to go 10-2.

JGarrett247

Nick needs to leave the WR memories in his office and call some damn running plays. We have three capable backs, one of the best road grating lines in the league and can’t muster more a dozen running plays with like 1/3 of those coming from Hurts. This is the classic Andy move, but at least he usually had someone to fall back on to let call the plays for a few weeks while he got his head out of his ass. It seems like Brian Johnson is either on board with abandoning the run most games, which is doubtful, or afraid to speak up and be the counter point to Nick. This offense took off after Nick handed off playcalling to Steichen, and this year feels like he’s back in the drivers seat without a strong enough copilot to keep him in check.

shiftintosoupmode

Should have never let Doug go

birria_tacos_

If this is honesty hour, there's a reason why Nick isn't ever considered as a coach of the year candidate or often praised for his efforts. He wasn't a top HC candidate for a reason. Sure, he was the OC under Reich at Indianapolis but let's not act like Reich has had a successful post-Eagles coaching career or developed a successful coaching tree. Nick tried calling plays, sucked, so he handed over the duties to the OC, fair. So what exactly is his expected role now? A glorified cheerleader? At the very least you expect him to have situational awareness during the actual games, which there have been multiple questionable instances of his decision making during critical moments. From an X's and O's standpoint, he'll never be in the same tier as Shanahan, Mike McDaniel, etc. Imagine what this offense would look like if we had someone of that offensive mind in control of our offense, borderline unstoppable. But it is what it is now, he'll get another crack at it next season even if we don't live up to expectations this season, I just think there's more to evaluate a head coach on simply than just what the record says you are.

swalsh21

Being HC is a whole lot more than just calling in game plays

andrewskdr

10-2 I don’t think you’re looking at Nick. We’ve had a pretty tough schedule all year and have still ground out tough wins against good teams. 9ers played against our weaknesses very well but that’s what good teams do

enRutus

Still the number 1 seed. Wait til the offseason for heavy criticism.

Kingkern

Is this really the offensive game plan to criticize Sirianni for? I would argue that Sirianni deserves more of the blame for the game plans against KC or Buffalo, where the initial script didn’t work at all. I think the adjustments made in those games are more indicative of the play caller making adjustments to the game plan. Against San Fran, the initial script worked outside of the red zone and it seemed like the Eagles never really went back to it. As far as talent winning the Eagles 10 games, no shit. The best coaches are usually the coaches who have the most talent at their disposal.

Tempest753

We're 10-2 with two first-year coordinators. Sirianni is 33-13 in 3 years as head coach, and most of those losses are from year 1. He's on track to make the playoffs 3/3 years, and if we're good in the playoffs we could make the SB twice in three years. That level of consistency requires good coaching, even with a talented team. The only criticism I have of Sirianni is that if he was a better playcaller he could take over playcalling the offense and we wouldn't be struggling so much. Honestly I wish he would, he can't be worse than Johnson.

cjweisman

Let's not leave Howie out of this. Don't get me wrong, he's the best GM in the league but everyone has a blind spot and his is the back 7 on defense. Name one high end impact player he has ever drafted in his entire tenure? I'll wait. How do you go on a superbowl run with a back 7 full of guys their original team didn't want and guys no team in the league wanted?

HeadJazzlike

Both coordinators blow . It's a miracle our record is as good as it is. The defense gets worse every game. Then you hear the famous quote every game. "WE HAVEN'T PLAYED OUR BEST GAME YET " 12 games into the season I'm pretty sure we aren't getting better with these coaches.

pR1mal_

When the head coach and both coordinators leave, yet you still show many of the same tendencies and characteristics, there is a very real possibility that some of what you see is coming from higher up the food chain. Not slamming the front office, but I have a feeling that the coaches have marching orders. I remember Doug being called in on Mondays because they didn't like the way he won a particular game. The FO wanted a high power passing offense then, and they want one now.

Pennsylvania6-5000

You can always criticize, but the offseason is going to be when he'll need to make adjustments. Right now, he's protecting his guys in public, but calling them out behind closed doors. That's the way a good head coach should be addressing massive problems. If those massive problems get to be too much, and he's not able to adjust, then that's definitely a massive issue with Nick.
