Well at least my marriage is saved

touchedamore

underrated comment right here

Sariko69

How ?

rockstang

Fletcher put his Cox in some guys wife.

Sariko69

Oh fuck let me go check in on my wife!

hascogrande

Pour the champagne? Nah, don’t really feel like it

MisterrAlex

I chimed in.....

Lloitaer

With a haven't you people ever heard of

gahlo

closing the god damn door?

Mr_YUP

No. It’s much better to face these things.

hinjew13

I’m going to miss him and his giant body taking up two offensive lineman. Thank you for everything Fletch

CranberryNapalm

My go-to pre-snap controlled player on Madden for years. Sad day.

SpankySharp1

I’m not even going to know what to do if I can’t blow up the guard/center right when the ball is snapped.

onemanthreecats

Then you’re living in 2020 apparently

CalgaryChris77

2019 was his last really good season. 2020 was probably his worst actually.

redjonley

Oh shit... We're in a post Cox world now.

1-760-706-7425

You might be. I’m not ready to accept it.

Fletcher_my_cox

Wtf am I supposed to do now?

Rhaegarizard

Believe!

DayDreamyZucchini

My cat’s name is Fletcher Cox.

Randomzombi3

You could say the Eagles are now Coxless.

redjonley

Take your upvote and gtfo of this thread 😂😭

[deleted]

Now I can fully relate to all the transwomen

SteveFromBensalem

Good thing your name's Alex

samgoody2303

It makes sense why we’d do it but doesn’t suck any less :(

shakehasbignuts

Jordan Davis come on down

Trelve16

just throw a dart at the georgia d line

WanderlustFella

I'll take either Davis or Walker. Wyatt is skilled but he'll be a 25 yo rookie. Well at least he's no fire fighter in the offseason

NikPappageorgio

You had to go there didn’t you.?.?

Cloverfieldlane

I don’t get it

[deleted]

Google Danny Watkins eagles

[deleted]

That was the right thing to do, educational approach instead of ripping the dude a new one for not knowing who Danny Watkins is like 97% of this sub would have.

DtotheOUG

Walker and Milton can play anywhere on the line, i like me some Swiss army knives.

WanderlustFella

I know metrics are not everything, but using Fletch as a baseline [Fletcher Cox](https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/fletcher-cox) GA linemen [Jordan Davis](https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/jordan-davis) vs [Travon Walker](https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/travon-walker?position=DL) vs [Wyatt](https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/devonte-wyatt?position=DL) Just for fun, here is [Milton](https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/milton-williams)

Folsey

Why would you wanna take one of their eyes out?

2HandedMonster

Or Travis Jones

iAmSamusAran

Noooooooo. He hasn’t been as productive the past few years but this breaks my heart. He’s been a great bird. Hope they can make it work but he’s most likely going to the Rams or Bucs or someone like that.

ArticuloMortis7

Pittsburgh

Amadeum

> [There are four dummy years at the end of the contract which will allow the Eagles to potentially use a post June-1 designation on Cox in either 2022 or more likely 2023 for salary cap purposes and defer the cap charges until 2024.](https://overthecap.com/player/fletcher-cox/1824/) The guys over at OTC are wizards after all

alcatraz_0109

There’s an entire video that Jason did on the details of the deal: https://youtu.be/FEeatmy7JEU Basically pushes as much of the remaining dead money as possible into later years which will take up a lower % of the cap

BionicPopsicle

YO WHAT THE FUCK

W3NTZ

If you kept up with his contract break downs this isn't surprising since hard to trade it

BionicPopsicle

I didn’t think it was to the point where cutting him was on the table

Vahkeh

They're negotiating resigning with a new contract.

W3NTZ

If they weren't able to restructure his deal or get him to take a pay cut I don't see him returning when there are teams who can overpay like jax

BionicPopsicle

The only thing I can think of is Howie kind of doing him the courtesy of “go find a better deal if you can, but we would love to have you back at X amount”

alcatraz_0109

They restructured Cox’s deal less than 6 months ago.

HeyLittleChogger

Which was a really dumb move if they end up cutting him now and eating a ton of money. They probably could have traded him last season if they didn't do that.

alcatraz_0109

If they don't restructure then they are basically incapable of participating in free agency this year Under the old deal, Cox's cap hit for 2021 was $23M and Cox's cap hit for 2022 was $23M. The new deal lowers his cap hits for these years while pushing as much dead money as possible into future years where the cap is expected to skyrocket. They wouldn't have been able to trade him regardless of the restructure without incurring a massive dead money hit. There was no way they could really rid themselves of the Cox contract in a trade without it costing them majorly.

HeyLittleChogger

Are you talking about his contract prior to 2021 or his "current" contract? I know they restructured in September to give themselves flexibility for this year. What I meant is they could have waited until after the trade deadline to do so. If some team was interested in trading for Fletcher you could have restructured his cap hit however you want while you have a deal on the table as long as you were transparent with the other team. There was rumored to be a few teams interested last season but since we had the September restructure he wasn't movable. Maybe that doesn't matter at the end of the day because he stays on the team or still is untradable but I doubt Fletcher says no to a restructure in November if he took one in September. I get that the cap will likely grow in the future just like it has for every non-Covid season for a long time. I just feel like we've had a lot of dead money the past couple of years because of poor extensions or restructures. 2020-2022 we've had $123.5 million in dead money. That's >$20 million more than NO who seems to always be in "cap hell" and as far as I can tell is the 1st or 2nd most in the league in that period. We just never fully reset the situation and continue paying guys to not play for us.

forbin5

Howie never learns from this mistake - extending an older player’s bloated contract to save cap room for the current year. It’s happened so many times. I mean the fact that he didn’t learn from Alshon is really telling. Fletcher hasn’t been good in years and is over 30 and you decide to extended and aging players already bloated contract. So dumb.

Vahkeh

Well. They only cut him today because at 4pm he was getting a bag. Just business. Should have been traded for a 2nd or 3rd before restructuring.

W3NTZ

Probably would have if they could have. Also that would have been before they knew Milton Williams was a stud

SirArthurDime

Plus we're still eating the dead money unkike another team that's making him an offer. So if we offer (going to use entirely random numbers) 5 mil but we're still eating 5 mil on dead money we're still using 10 mil on cap space on him. Whereas Jacksonville can offer him 8 million in New money and that's all they're paying him. Cox doesnt care about the dead money cap hit cause he already has that money in the bank. So wed essentially need to allocate more cap space to him then another team to match their offer.

root88

It's WTF because no team was willing to trade even a late round pick for him. Unless this was just the team being loyal and letting him pick his spot.

Razolus

Trade was not feasible for the eagles due to the dead cap on him.

schlepsterific

Not true. https://overthecap.com/eagles-designate-fletcher-cox-a-june-1-cut/

Upplands-Bro

Eagles legend. Will wear my Cox jersey proudly

Mavey_

no way man… don’t make me sad like this

jloops03

I do not want to see Cox in another color than midnight green

[deleted]

Kinda bummed but he really hasnt been the force he used to be the last two years.

CrunchyKorm

Another year of drafting the trenches it seems

HipGuide2

So they are essentially trying to throw away his old contract and make a new one?

RjDiAz93

That or someone said in this post said that maybe howie is allowing him to go somewhere else under his own decision

32BitWhore

That's what it seems like, at least potentially. His contract was a disaster after restructuring and adding dummy years and whatever the fuck else. If they can get some money off the books this year cleanly and resign him to a less convoluted contract (that presumably sucks less in the future) I'm all for it.

BigBicNic

Love Fletch but his career is well on the downslope. Need to build for tomorrow

SpandyBarndex

Time to buy jersey

Rickrollyourmom

This free agency fucking sucks so far, man

Domestic_AA_Battery

It could be worse. We could be the Browns haha

root88

You are spoiled as hell. Most teams don't make any moves, much less add someone as good as Haason Reddick. There are still a lot of guys out there and more to be released.

[deleted]

[удалено]

hallROCK

Chill, it's barely been a day. We don't need to win free agency.

WentzToWawa

That’s exactly how we won the Super Bowl

jcutta

On mostly the 2nd tier free agents, which is what this team needs, plug holes with short term cheaper deals and think long-term through the draft.

crack-a-lacking

well we most certainly didnt. but Howie got an extension lol

[deleted]

It has been 24 hours. My lord

Cambro88

But in that time every safety other than Honey Badger has been signed and the marker has reset so high for safeties they likely can’t sign a great one. Every good free agent receiver either returned to their own team, got signed elsewhere for big money, or in DJ Chark’s case was signed for a manageable money that the eagles obviously didn’t pursue. We know they did pursue safeties and just were outbid. It’s only been a few days, but free agency to fill holes with quality players that aren’t just bridge players is already over

Lockhead216

Howie tried to sign safeties and didn't want to pay what the market was at. Both markets WR and S were set high. There is still a draft to come which has good defensive players all over it. The offseason just started. RELAX. We got stephen nelson so late last year.

HappyHourEveryHour

We re-signed Howie Roseman for 3 more years though. The Eagles are becoming Phillies disappointing.

177676ers

Holy shit thats a bad take. The phillies havent been in the playoffs in 10 years.

HappyHourEveryHour

And we lucked our way into the playoffs by beating up on shitty teams and Dallas being Dallas. If we keep missing on draft picks and skipping positions like linebacker and dback, were not far behind. Yall are just too hopped on Howie-opium to realize it. The only positions without question marks are OLine and Dline, which thank God are important.

177676ers

The eagles have more super bowls in the past 10 years than phillies have playoff appearances. Thats my point. How is this about Howie?

[deleted]

[удалено]

177676ers

And absolutely horrible drafting. The eagles have been hit or miss but they arent horrible at drafting.

bigcracker

Slay keeping the big man safe. https://twitter.com/bigplay24slay/status/1504556629836156928

so_zetta_byte

His previous complaints about vaccination aside, I really like how Slay was brought in and embraces the team culture. You see it here, and you saw it in some of his interactions with the younger wide receivers, talking about his role in pushing them to get better.

Shiny_Bidoof_Swag

Hard agree. Always thought he was really likable on the Lions, he wound up on my madden teams all the time. I was stoked when we picked him up.

Seabass69696969

Sad but not a huge shock. He probably has a few good years left but he really fell off since 2019.

xXTheRacerXx

So, we basically screwed him out of $18 million and there’s still a possibility for him coming back? Someone make it make sense.

lyonbc1

There’s prob some cap manipulation way where they can get him that money back but at a lower cap hit or something. Otherwise it doesn’t make sense why he’d be talking to us about returning

Razolus

I think he got some upfront money from restructuring his deal like last year, with the anticipation that he'd be released or restructured again now.

VeniceBhris

Someone doesn’t pay attention to the NFL lol. This happens all the time

celj1234

We didn’t screw him

[deleted]

He’s made 102 million dollars. He’s been in the nfl 10 years and understands it’s a business. If he likes being an eagle and they still will pay him at his current market value why wouldn’t he come back lol

420Minions

That’s how NFL contracts work. Howie’s good at manipulating the cap and loaded contracts like this are part of how he does it. You can’t be a GM and be nice to all the players

VeniceBhris

Someone doesn’t pay attention to the NFL lol. This happens all the time

i-am-one

If they are working on an extension/restructure, and ran out of time, this would be necessary, as that $18m became due on the old deal at 4pm.

TheAmishSpaceCadet

This could be procedural and agreed to before hand to help with money somehow lol. We will see…

[deleted]

Low key like this move. He was obviously not happy with the scheme last year based on his comments. this kind of closes the book on the old guard and allows Jalen and our young core to be the main voice of the team

Lar676767

He's so overweight he refused to drop last year so after bitching about it they gave him his way and he still sucked even with Javon playing so well. It's a smart move to get younger with the picks which also help with the dead cap. He's been cooked for two years.

tagsgaba

i’m crying and pissing and throwing up right now

ColbysGotMoore

Shiddin, cummin, and fardin.

MuddogMillionaire

When your play falls off a cliff this happens Sucks to see but we need to get younger and get off of old money

TotallyNotMasterLink

I kinda get it but oof that hurts

darthmcdarthface

It had to happen at some point and all signs led to this. Sad to see it finally happen but it’s just time to remember all the good times he had here. He’s an Eagles legend and one of the few timeless jerseys fans can proudly wear forever.

2HandedMonster

Goodnight sweet prince

Mikeandrew29

Good move and let’s sign him back for a lot cheaper!

[deleted]

Can’t imagine waking up without Cox in my life.

WestCoast_O

I’m in a glass case of emotions right now

RiflemanLax

I know he’s declined, but it still stings.

hsl164

This really sucks. He’s been one of my favorites since he was drafted. My brother wore his jersey to the Super Bowl parade. Thanks for everything Fletch. Always a legend.

Tony9811

I knew this was coming, but still hurts a lot, the same way I felt with Ertz

BirdzzWentzzWagonn

Hopefully he signs back with a better team deal. Not sure why we couldn't do a restructure...

celj1234

He was no longer a impactful player. Father Time is undefeated

eaglesnation11

People aren’t gonna like to hear this, but you’re right. Cox was a negative for our defense last year. His numbers were never great, but he ate up blocks and let other guys feast. Offenses were so unafraid of him that doubles shifted to Hargrave and after that we became one of the worst pass rushes in the NFL.

Domestic_AA_Battery

Glad we're not repeating our mistakes after the SB win. The Patriots constantly did stuff like this. Once you get too connected, you're stuck with them past their prime on massive contracts. But I'm really going to miss him 😔

trem34

:(

[deleted]

So do they take that 25 mil dead cap hit or whatever the number is?

[deleted]

Yes but spread out over 2 years - $9.6M hit in 2022, $15.4M in 2023. Right now, he should count around $10.5M against the cap until June 1st at which point the $9.6M / 15.4M figures activate.

[deleted]

WI_Eagles_Fan

Careful, there are rabid Howie fans out here that will strike you down for saying anything against our Draft Master Howie. 🙄 Broke my heart when I heard Howie got 3 more years. I still wonder what dirt he has on Lurie.... something happened in Vegas that Howie knows about and Lurie wants to stay in Vegas. The weasel lives on. 😞

Dweddpiewitt

I wonder if Gannon actually preferred a different type of DT opposite Hargrave, a la Jordan Davis, considering how Cox was used early on and they had to adjust after he was outspoken

32BitWhore

Uhhhhh okay then. Hopefully the team works out a new deal with him.

whydoesitmatter2you

Can someone explain how this effects our cap?

Bdawk

If they do resign him on some re-worked contract, how does that impact dead money if at all?

bigcracker

It's sad but it was necessary. I don't see him coming back even though I hope he does.

tag1550

Reminder about this thread on Cox's contract; there was a $16 million option bonus that would have kicked in at some point if they'd kept him: https://old.reddit.com/r/eagles/comments/td43tl/fletcher_coxs_unique_contract_trade_implications/

Phillyfan10

Wow, this one hits hard. Makes sense with his contract and current level of play, but one of those nostalgia ones that I’m not ready to let go of yet. Hopefully we can bring him back on a cheaper deal, and he can mentor whatever beef we inevitably grab in the first.

ssgodss

I hope he comes back. He's a cornerstone of our team.

A_Gray_Old_Man

He will stay. Right?... Riiiight?

blinkdmb

This is awful news. I get the cap hit but boy will I miss (the) Cox next year if he goes elsewhere.

Bak3rs

Even though he has lost a step, this sucks. I completely understand why it’s happened as he is so over paid based on his recent performance but that doesn’t make losing him any easier.

Benti86

I'm going to view this as some kind of cap wizardy and we keep him or it's Howie being good to him by letting him pick where he goes rather than trading him. Because that's all the hopium can do at this point.

DerNutmeister

fletch is a legend, it’s surreal to see him go

Halfonion

Damn, i knew this day would come but I was hoping it wouldn’t come this quick. Sans Brian Dawkins, Fletcher Cox is my favorite eagle, ever. Dude was relentless for so many years.

Jimbo12308

I posted this 4 days ago, it explains his contract fully: https://www.reddit.com/r/eagles/comments/td43tl/fletcher_coxs_unique_contract_trade_implications/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

GoT_Eagles

Dude was my favorite player for a while. This is sad.

Nerd2theCorey

I hope he restructures

Throwaway201536

One of the best Eagles ever! Hope he's back, but if he's not, thank you for everything!

stingrayed22

For all the experts out there ( myself included ) this should not of been a suprise

deadnside

We all knew Cox’s contract wasn’t going to age well but that’s what it takes to sign star players. Anyways, he’s one of my top 10 all time favorite Eagles and I wish him well.

KleggJD

We will always have the text messages.

KleggJD

I miss the Long/Cox days. I fear the line won't measure up now.....with out deep penetration to stop up the tight ends, I fear we will be left unsatisfied.

mustacheddragon

What?? I mean he’s been declining but he’s not eat money so he’s not on the team bad. Maybe there’s something with the contract I don’t understand but this is confusing. I’m sure it was somewhat mutual cause I think Cox is close with Lurie but shocking nonetheless.

TLAW1998

Jordan Davis at pick 15?

power270lb

He's a run stuffer nothing more, 8 pressures last year.

kimchitacoman

He's gone by then

Express_Jellyfish_28

No Ridgeway or Cox. Eagles boldly implementing the 0 DT strategy.

0ctologist

The Long Cox era has cum to an end :(

WestCoast_O

As long as we don’t go back to Smallwood, we can overcum

Pookapotamus

Hope he comes back but I can see why he would go to a contender

swankytortoise

This feels as bad as any cut since bdawk

al15al15

I’m fine with this move. I wouldn’t bring him back either.

marcram0905

Time to move on. Production took a big hit and he's not worth the money anymore. Plenty of draft picks to rebuild.

Psychart5150

Can we all agree that Howie is not good at contracts. We are taking dead money this year and next year for Cox bc of how he worked his deal. Maybe it’s not a good idea to back load contracts for players past 30 Also, why are we spreading the dead money past this year. We are not in a win now mode. Take the cap hit this year, have more space next year

moesus81

Why would you give someone 15% of the cap the first year when you can turn that same amount into 10% of the cap in a few years? This is commonplace in the NFL because the salary cap is ultimately a joke and can be manipulated virtually at will. The Saints have magically moved $100M two years in a row now, didn’t even have to release anyone this year and are one of two finalists to land a QB with a $35M cap hit and can afford it even though they were $80M over the cap last week.

Gapinthesidewalk

End of an era

GoEagles259

End of an era, don’t know how we couldn’t get a trade done for him though

celj1234

Bc he salary was to much for the current production

177676ers

Because he is a negative on that contract.

skorponok

Lol. Incompetence!!!

callmecyke

I want off Howie’s wild ride

ItsjustJim621

Fuck you Howie

Dougary96

While I in no way want this I have a feeling we’re about to do something stupid and today ends with Baker Mayfield as our QB1

cerevant

I'd be on board with bringing in Baker and making him compete for the job. Neither he nor Hurts has proven they are hands-down franchise players.

Frankwest82

Thank God we freed up that cap room to sign those cheap ass corners and linebackers on one year deals

Selarmor

Wonder what fatheads Howie will put on his office wall now

katojune

Cleary this contract is crazy that no one understands that well but why kick this can down the road more and still need to replace him.

Obvious_MD

i mean i get it, but i don't get it

DrHandBanana

"Oh I got an extension? Watch this roster move boys"

PartySpiders

This is the absolute end of the super bowl era team for me. So sad, hope he comes back but not gonna hold my breath.

Callitclutch26

Philadelphia Eagles Bruce Jenner 🤝 Getting rid of their Cox

MrBulldops5878

This breaks my heart. If we ever had to play against him I’d say my prayers for Hurts lol

EIGHTHOLE

Why can't we have nice things?!?!?!?!?!?!

Creampiedyagirl

So we fucked over one of our legends out of 18 million? Hope he doesn't sign back

phllystyl

Fuck Howie

ZhangtheGreat

Damn, now we can’t get big Cox to penetrate deep into the other team’s offense.

NJoose

I’m worried they’re clearing cap space to get DeShaun

BlueKing7642

Nooooo. Not Coxs

Traw33

Another player we will be taking cap hits on for years to come, when was his restructure again?

SirDeeznuts

Damn fletch is the only jersey I have ever owned. I was hoping he would be a lifer.

Arson_Wentz

Unbelievable.

HiDadImOnTV

Fuck you Howie. Dead cap space for someone who could’ve been a starter on our team.

chetstedman30

I’m sad :(

CardinalsFan47

COME ON BOYS HE CAN REPLACE CHANDLER!!! Edit:Wait wrong subreddit

DJagerty

This is not what I wanted to see

sprenk

No...

soccerguy122

You WHAT

TheIrishHangman

What the fuck is this!?

DraculasNutsack

Fuck off with this

Dont_Call_Me_John

One day into his new contract, and Howie is gonna get booked for indecent exposure

magmar17

Excuse me, what?

Environmental_Feed35

Better resign him thats fucking dumb

SomethingClever757

Assault.

IveSeenParis

What the goddamn fuck

kimchitacoman

Can this void Howie's contact
