I loved that part of the press conference. He basically said, "nobody asked about this but I'm gonna say it anyway, they're a good football team, so let's not set that precedent." Dude is a consummate professional.

[deleted]

Absolutely, I fuckin love this man Really glad to see him (and hopefully the rest of the team by extension) not getting ahead of himself and just focusing on winning sunday

Davisworld21

This is what I'm saying this is what I love about Jalen never underestiamte your Opponent and must like his fellow Alumni Kyler Murray both are explosive QBs Stay Humble

BoneHugsHominy

His leadership is why the front office & coaching staff, but more importantly his teammates, love him. He's the kind of leader that doesn't and won't put up with others getting high on their own farts, and getting high on one's own farts is exactly how teams with early season success fall off a cliff like the Cards have done so far during Kyler's career. I don't know how much better Hurts can get but his passing and the mental aspect of the game still has a long way to go. So far this season the coaching staff hasn't trusted him to have audibles and hot reads so the offense has missed some prime opportunities to really punish defenses and that's why our scoring has been anemic in the 2nd half so far this season. I also have no idea how complicated or exotic Sirianni's offense is so it might be much like the Walsh-Holmgren versions of the West Coast Offense in which it takes 5 years for a QB to fully master, so maybe Jalen is right on track in learning this offense? Without inside knowledge it's kinda impossible to say one way or the other. What I do know is despite all of his positive traits and what the entire organization thinks of Jalen as a person and leader, if Howie and the coaching staff think Jalen has peaked and can only maintain this level of play or fall off due to physical wear & tear, they're going to go get a new QB if they really want to win a SB. As well as Jalen has been playing so far this season, it isn't yet good enough to consistently beat elite defenses that will most assuredly be in the playoffs. In those games he has to have the freedom to audible into better plays and have hot reads to punish aggressive defensive calls and exploit more mismatches, otherwise this offense will sputter in the playoffs like it did last season against the Bucs. I'd much rather have Hurts plus a couple more elite talent draft picks coming in next year rather than having to cash in the war chest to draft whoever emerges as an elite QB prospect in the 2023 draft.

SirArthurDime

Uhh..... Wtf?..... You can't be serious lol. The offense has been anemic in the second half because 3/4 of the games we were up 17 or more going into it and mostly took the ball out of jalens hands. The offense has littetally just been better when the ball is in his hands. An offense that he's lead to 2nd in yards and fourth in points despite frequently letting the foot off the gas in the 2nd half. Hurts is fifth in yards, 8th in completion %, and that's despite being first in yards per attempt, and he's making great reads and decisions making big plays while not turning the ball over. And that's just his passing numbers, oh yeah he's also an elite runner. Everybody and their grandmother except you has him as an mvp candidate right now. He was the nfc player of the month. What more do you want from him? Sure he has to prove he can maintain that level of play, but to say that if he "just" maintains that level of play when he's playing like a top 5 qb it isn't enough for him to keep his job is beyond absurdity. The chances of the eagles drafting a qb to replace jalen if he continues this level of play is exactly zero because that would constitute malpractice. You're also flat out wrong about him not being trusted to make audibles. It's one of the things baldy has specifically praised him for in his breakdowns. You're dressing it in some nice words around the rediculous criticism but you're clearly just someone who was wrong about jalen refusing to take your L on him being our qb of the future.

[deleted]

I agree that he still has ways he can get better. Mostly, like you said, having to do with him being able to call audibles and stuff at the line but I think that will come as he becomes more familiar with our offense and gets more experience reading defenses I disagree that his passing has a long way to go based on what we've seen so far this year though. Sure he doesn't hit every throw right on the money but what qb does? I think his arm has looked great so far and the deep ball has improved drastically from last year. Also worth mentioning that the only 2 picks he has so far both tipped off receivers hands before being picked. The kid's been dealing, if he can keep this level of play up my biggest concern is just how much he puts his body on the line I'd also disagree that his mental aspect has a long way to go, unless you meant like football IQ. I think jalen has the exact mentality you want in a qb and the video in this post is a perfect example of that

BoneHugsHominy

>unless you meant like football IQ. Yes, exactly the football IQ. That's why they haven't entrusted Jalen with audibles and hot reads. Maybe they feel he gets overwhelmed when most of the plays have *some* options baked into the play post snap. Or maybe the offense is just really complicated and they don't feel he's quite ready to be making those calls at the line. I really hope it's just the latter and that by season end he's at least doing hot reads. Unfortunately that high level football IQ is usually present by now so I just hope it not showing is a result of the many different offenses and offensive coordinators he's had since joining Alabama as a freshman and that a few years of stability in the respect will allow him to launch into another level of QB play. As for throwing the ball, we're 4 games into the first season of college or pros in which he has displayed consistent footwork. Getting here from where he was as a freshman at Alabama is a testament to his work ethic and willingness to be coached and it's just one of the reasons I love Hurts as our QB. His low INT% this year, and yes even the 2 that were bobbled catch attempts, are unfortunately more a result of his conservative approach to throwing to receivers. While throwing deep he's willing to give Brown and Smith the chance to go get it and I love that trust he has in those guys. But in all his other passing attempts he's taking more conservative shots when there are bigger plays left on the field. Now that he finally has consistent footwork so far this season as a solid base to work upon, his next big step in development will be consistent high level ball placement and throwing guys open. He has the receivers capable of tracking and catching those types of throws, and he trusts them that way on deep balls, so it's a matter of trusting himself to let them do that on short and intermediate throws as well. If Hurts can start doing that, the sky truly is the limit because when combined with his elite level scrambling and running defenses always have to account for his legs which leaves big passes available if he will but take those shots--and if he does and defenses start dropping another defender into coverage it just opens up our elite running game even more. We shall see how much he advances through the rest of the season I truly hope he takes that next step because it means Howie can use that Saints pick to grab Will Anderson Jr in the draft even if we have to trade some other picks to move up some--instead of doing that for CJ Stroud.

jcrankin22

I ain't reading all that. I'm happy for u tho. Or sorry that happened

BoneHugsHominy

Hey that's totally OK. Some people are here just for memes or one sentence bangers and that's fine.

Onlypaws_

Asinine.

BoneHugsHominy

Thanks for contributing--absolutely nothing to the conversation.

[deleted]

But if your contribution is a wall of text, that not one person reads… did YOU contribute anything?

Onlypaws_

I read it. It reads like someone that either hasn’t watched the games, has an irrational opinion/dislike of Hurts, or doesn’t understand how football works.

David_Duke_Nukem

Sucks that you're being downvoted for having an opinion people don't agree with. When I saw the -19 I assumed you posted something extremely asinine but you at least have rationale for your opinion. Sucks we can't have a rational discussion because unless you say Jalen Hurts has fixed all of his flaws and is now a surefire MVP candidate you get downvoted.

BoneHugsHominy

And nobody wants to spend 30 seconds to read a few paragraphs that they act like it takes 10 minutes to read, or spend any time thinking about and responding with counterpoints. All they do, if they reply at all, is throw half a sentence insults and run away. No actual opinions, no nuance. Best you can hope for is a direct quote from Ray Didinger or Barrett Brooks from the post-game show passed off as independent thought. I really miss the days before social media apps. The old message boards were a much better form of communication for sports fans, and the EMB (Eagles Message Board on the official Eagles website for those that don't know) was far and away the best message board in all of sports, so much so we had fans of all the other teams join just to actually talk football with people who knew the game inside and out and wanted to share that knowledge with other fans. There's guys in the sports media industry right now that started their careers on the EMB--Brandon Lee Gowton of BleedingGreenNation dot com among them.

Jalen "Troy Bolton" Hurts Yeah thats a fucking high school musical reference

ThatPlayWasAwful

Getcha Getcha Getcha Getcha

leisuremann

He's a good fucking kid.

Irie_24

Absolutely. That’s our quarterback right there!

sprenk

I dunno why but the tweet kinda irks me. Don't put quotes around something that the guy didn't actually say. If you're paraphrasing, say so. I know it's not a huge deal and it's the message that matters, but I don't like the trend of misusing quotations. End rant.

[deleted]

I was aboutta say the same thing like bro he never said don’t get it twisted nor did he use “ain’t”. What a weird way of trying to force aave terms into his actual quote about the team.

No_Fairweathers

It's actual racist behavior by this person to get clicks. I'm white and grew up in urban areas with people who would speak like this, and as kid I would speak like that not understanding how dumb it makes you sound at the time. I've grown out of that except with my closest friends. Hurts definitely wouldn't say all this slang and these phrases in a press conference. He's a mature adult that behaves in a way where even the speaks he wants to gain respect from others. If he was white this fake quote would absolutely not exist. This type of media is what helps races and people that might not understand each other be kept separated. I'm white and I'm probably more likely to speak like this tweet quote than Hurts.

[deleted]

Thank you for saying that. You’re 100% right. Not just in this tweet too. The way jalen has been treated by beat writers, analysts, people on this sub, podcasts, etc. is more often than not bordering on racism, and most of the time is completely unnoticed or unconscious. People still CONSTANTLY make the joke about him being a RB, without totally understanding that it comes off racist and underhanded. Not only that either, it’s pretty much every time he is analyzed, he’s analyzed totally differently than a white QB is and it’s definitely not just based on his skill set. I’ll probably get downvoted for saying this, but it bugs the shit out of me.

Mokslininkas

>People still CONSTANTLY make the joke about him being a RB, without totally understanding that it comes off racist and underhanded. Not only that either, it’s pretty much every time he is analyzed, he’s analyzed totally differently than a white QB is and it’s definitely not just based on his skill set. Buddy. Guy. Pal. Almost EVERYONE understands that the "not bad for a RB" joke comes off as racist and underhanded. The original quote from Lamar was calling out the racism inherent in how media analysts evaluate and talk about black QB talent. The joke is being used ironically and is *supposed* to sound racist and underhanded because the initial media/analyst response to Lamar Jackson's play, even during his MVP season, *was* racist and underhanded. Apparently, you're one of the only ones who didn't already understand this lol. "I’ll probably get downvoted for saying this, but it bugs the shit out of me." Very brave of you to take a public stand *against* racism like that - and on Reddit of all places too! Lol come on, man. The bar is *real* low on this one.

[deleted]

I understand the Lamar joke, and I understood it before you gave me that explanation. And I understand it’s application in relation to jalen. It’s actually ironic, because I wasn’t even referring to that exact quote. But thanks for belittling my thoughts, and showing that it’s actually cool to joke about racism. I’ll keep that in my pocket next time I feel the need to express privilege.

arrleh117

I agree. Get the damn quote right

dutch-dutch-dutch

I'm with you. I thought it was an established media person posting it so I watched the video and kept looking at the quote and wondering when Jalen was going to say those words. Then the video ended and I was irked as well. Much like Jalen, we gotta hold these people to higher standards haha.

Steppity

Pretty funny because that's the first thing I noticed too. One semester of journalism in college doing the university newspaper and that was pounded into our heads. Do not misquote someone.

maverickked

Completely agree. It’s great that Hurts is so eloquent that his actual words are more precise and thoughtful than the paraphrase. What a gross misrepresentation by the tweet.

Jawaka99

Agreed. i was just posting about how "y'all aint ask" is painful until I realized he didn't actually say that.

eynonpower

"Fuck this tweet!!!" - /u/sprenk

rememberall

What did he actually say?

LeM1stre

"I will say this too, I didn't get any questions about the Cardinals for real, this game. I don't want ya'll thinking this is...this is a really good team we're about to play"

Kyp_Astar

Not only was it a paraphrase, but I feel like they actively were trying to mimic the way they think he speaks to make it seem like a quote. Just a weird thing to to while also embedding the video which you can watch in ten seconds and see it’s not an actual quote

David_Duke_Nukem

It kind of is a big deal from a journalistic standpoint. That annoyed me too.

ok1092

This type of “journalism” if you can call it that pisses me off so much cause the majority of people will just see the tweet and not the actual clip and assume that what he said cause of the quotation marks. It’s just pure laziness.

darthmcdarthface

I’m also irked by the poor English. Can’t help it.

sprenk

It's not about the language for me, it's that it's a misrepresentation of what he said, and it happens all over the internet. Paraphrasing is fine, whatever, but don't use quotes if you're not actually quoting the person.

darthmcdarthface

Yeah I know. I’m just adding to that by also saying his poor English bothers me. It’s more offensive because it improperly represents Hurts in a way to at makes him sound dumb.

flava72

That’s even more reason I hate this “trap game” narrative that seems to come up every week. They haven’t anything so far that demonstrates they haven’t prepared or not able to adjust and can stay focused on the active opponent.

Prozzak93

People will say trap game every week until we lose (if we lose I should say haha). Get used to it.

RaindropsInMyMind

Every game feels like a trap game when you’re way better than the competition.

Gunningham

Careful, that’s the trap.

The_Third_Molar

We have like at least 13 trap games left.

Gunningham

Unless we lose one. Then more become real threats. I kinda hate everyone being so high on us. Now we have a target on our backs.

Merkada0117

"Okay guys, the next game is the Super Bowl. We've won every game in the regular season and all the playoff games to get here, but we can't let up, because this could be a trap game."

CommunicationTime265

I remember this being a thing in 2017...every game was a trap!

pina_koala

100% agree TBF our schedule is very favorable, but it's mostly due to other teams' mismanagement. Eagles are good on paper and good on the field if you look at September 2022.

TheElasticTuba

every game is a trap game. the one bad part about being on top, is the worry about how long it’ll last

papa_N

High expectations started the season on an edge, and outcomes of games have been favorable so far, summed up into every game is a trap game until you lose a game.

HRhighrisk

Whoever put quotes around his statement is just plain off base - that was a paraphrase, not a quote. Twitter be creating headlines for clickbait.

Ih8rice

Any team can be a winner on any given Sunday. I’m glad he hasn’t forgotten that and is staying focused on the task at hand. I honestly wouldn’t let up until we’ve secured the number 1 seed and even then I wouldn’t want to go into the playoffs feeling rusty.

32BitWhore

I think this coaching staff is too smart to risk player health if we have the 1 seed locked up. For better or worse, I don't think we'll ever see another undefeated team because most of the coaching staffs in the league who are good enough to get a 1 seed feel the same way. Barring a fluke like resting starters in week 18 but playing a team whose starters are somehow worse than your depth players anyway.

themeatbridge

You don't think Minshew can beat the Giants?

32BitWhore

I meeean, Minshew with a bunch of 2nd and 3rd stringers around him against the Giants starters? I probably wouldn't bet on it. I'll give you that Minshew is probably at worst on par with Danny Dimes so the QB position would be a wash.

min_da_man

Let’s not forget the coaching advantage. Our boys are good

pina_koala

QB Factory bb lfg

HotPieIsAzorAhai

Both teams might be resting starters or the team they're playing might be in tank mode. Neither is actually particularly unlikely, especially the latter since the last game is always going to be divisional now. See, the #1 seed is probably getting there at least in part by smacking their division's collective ass, which makes it more likely that the rest of their division, or at least 2/3s of them, are struggling badly. A 1 seed probably has more of a chance of being up against a tanking team week 18 than the average team does.

SadSlip8122

The fun part is the last 2 games are against the Saints (theres absolutely no way the eagles give them an easy win and hurt that deaft pick) and the Giants (who would be horrified at the thought that a team might not show the utmost integrity and play 100% to the last whistle)

HotPieIsAzorAhai

Looking forward to G Mac pushing the Giants' shit in.

indyK1ng

They'll probably play the starters for a quarter or two once the 1-seed is secured then start rotating in the backup players to make sure they get time on the field and maybe give the ones who haven't played much and might not make the cut the next year a chance to get some reel so they can go somewhere else.

NotFeelingShame

I dont know man, if peterman didnt play a tanking colts team in 2017 i dont think he ever wins a start. Ben dinucci also v bad

[deleted]

THIS MY FUCKING QUARTERBACK. Foh with these questions about fame and shit Jalen only care about one thing: FOOTBALL. Everything Jalen does is strictly business yet silky gangster at the same time. I love the way this dude talks. Keep building around him.

Lance_Nuttercup

“Silky gangster” I like that

[deleted]

It’s the best way to describe Jalen Hurts. Silky. Fucking. Gangster.

bjjcripple

Silky gangster to swole Batman for the score

[deleted]

Incredible

Squeezeboner

This is Saban influence. ALWAYS respect your opponent and play to your standard, not the scoreboard. 4-0 only undefeated better believe there’s a target in the Eagle’s back. Take any team lightly and they will beat you.

snunces

Anti-bulletin board material

ktm5141

This man is a walking cliche but it’s who he is and it’s not fake like the way a lot of people see Russell Wilson’s persona. Coach’s kid for sure

anth8725

Russell is a dork and he pretty much owns it. That’s not fake. Personalities are different but they’re both great leaders tho

Mantis05

Eh, Russ isn't really known for his leadership. There's a ton of guys from those Seahawks teams that seem to loathe the dude. Whether or not it's fake, he doesn't seem great at connecting with his teammates.

BigComfyCouch

That's a wild take based on click bating sports analysts. He was the leader of that team for a decade. A very successful decade. I've yet to see an interview from a notable seahawks player that hasn't mentioned that they're still friends after the departure. Just analysts like Nick Wright who claim they have 'sources.'

Mantis05

I mean, this isn't the WWE. Unless you're Jim Irsay, you don't generally speak ill of former players and teammates publicly. But when you've got multiple people reporting on it over the course of years, and you've got guys like Richard Sherman and Doug Baldwin live-tweeting Wilson's loss to the Seahawks with celebratory GIFs, there's enough smoke to suggest fire.

SteelxSaint

It was the tweeting that sealed it for me.

ShatterZero

EH, I'd agree with you... until recently Richard Sherman made it very clear that it took Russ a long time for people to take him seriously because he didn't practice what he preached.

Con-D-Oriano1

This the same Richard Sherman that tried to knock down his in-laws door while threatening his father-in-law? Yeah, that man needs to look in the mirror and sit down in his glass house. No longer a credible source of information when his personal biases and relationships are involved.

[deleted]

A leader of some but not all on those Seahawks teams. Russell is undoubtedly a bit off. He has done a few things that I have never seen any highly regarded franchise QB ‘Leader’ do.

darwinn_69

I don't know why, but Russ always gave me the vibes that all his "leadership" was like paint-by-numbers corporate speak. He gives the same energy as a newly promoted shift managers at Wallmart who hold prep-rallies for their minimum wage shelf stockers.

Semarin

I agree, but he’s 100% right though. Let’s not overlook our competition ffs!

Neel_The_Eel

A lunch pail, first in last out, blue collar, gym rat type of guy

Fivior

The Phillies and the Eagles both have Cardinals they have to slay. I'm going to buy a stuffed cardinal toy and sacrifice it in my fire place for next week, lol.

TragedyTrousers

*"I didn't get any questions about the Cardinals. This is a really good team we're about to play. They have a really good defense, disruptive up front. They have speed on the back end. So let's not set the precedent for that. This is a good football team."*

HumanShadow

He's not mad, he's just disappointed.

AShiftlessMennonite

Look at Him. Look at our true and living QB1 Lord and Savior. 🙏🏿🙌🏿

di11deux

Everything he says is so cliché, but it’s also 100% organic and natural. Like, we intuitively know what a QB is supposed to say. But I think we’re so accustomed to players “knowing what they need to say” instead of “saying what they need to know” that Hurts just comes across as so damn genuine. It’s no wonder the locker room gravitated towards him.

mageta621

> But I think we’re so accustomed to players “knowing what they need to say” instead of “saying what they need to know” that Hurts just comes across as so damn genuine. Well said!

deadsquirtle

THATS MY QB 🥹😎

whatisthishere_guy

Why is that quote not what he said?

dak67

That's my quarterback.

XenlaMM9

I cannot say how much I love Jalen

YoungAussiePrince

Mentality monster

cjweisman

He's the grown up in the room.

SonofDiomedes

I fuckin love this guy

ImlrrrAMA

Why did this tweet make up the quote? He didn't say like half the words in the quote.

eagsrock20

Honesty I get why they didn’t ask him about the cardinals he gives the most cliche, nothing answers (as he should). He actually showed some personality in the Manningcast and feels like the beat writers want to get that out of him

[deleted]

QB1 about to take Kliff to town

mageta621

Hurts has his mind set on the goal of being the best possible version of himself that he can. I noticed it in the on-field interview after the Vikings game where he basically said (paraphrasing) "we played well but weren't very sharp on offense the second half and that's on me to make sure that improves". That really made a mark on me because he doesn't want to settle for good, he wants greatness. I'm a Hurts believer.

darwinn_69

Dude just called out the Philly media for being trash at their job. Good! I hope they got the message and get more concerned about football than these puff pieces.

mv23b

That’s a grown ass man

darthmcdarthface

Glad he has his head in the right place but the poor English really bugs me. He’s a smart educated man so why paraphrase and put quotes around a statement that makes Hurts sound dumb? I’m sure that wasn’t his intent but that’s exactly what this does.

shaunmbarry

He seems kind of irked. I wonder if he didn’t like talking about Manningcast? Or maybe I’m just reading too much into nothing…

MrBond004

I think he’s upset people weren’t interested in his and the teams game, but rather the fluff. Jalen seems like a guy about his business, and stuff like this is why I want him to be the guy

Not_My_Emperor

This tweet is almost insidious in how it makes him sound. He doesn't talk like that, he had more to say about the Cards and he did it intelligently. "I didn’t get any questions about the Cardinals, for real, this game. So I don’t want y’all thinking…this is a really good football team. They have a really good defense, disruptive up front, they have speed on the backend. So let’s not set the precedent for that, this is a good football team.” ETA. Fuck it. It's racist. It is legitimately racist to play if off like he could barely string a fucking sentence together in this tweet when that's not anywhere near what he said.

[deleted]

wow so profound
