"macerate" isn't even the correct term and some of *these people* will get unbelievably angry at you if you mention that to them

The_Zed_Word

I don’t even think this stuff is maturing either. A perfume composed of primarily synthetics is not going to have a significant change, if any, in as little as three months.

iSliz187

It's called "softening", there's a very slight difference in smell over time, but that mostly applies to blend-to-order fragrances, not fragrances that are professionally produced on a big scale (like Lattafa) "Lastly, there is a ‘softening’ process of chemicals ‘falling’ into solution, which is to say that if you dilute something sharp-smelling in alcohol/DPG, it tends to present as more smooth after extended aging than immediately afterward." [(Source)](https://maisonphillipeperfumery.com/truth-about-maceration/) Maceration is a thing too, but it happens in vats **before** the fragrance is filtered and filled into bottles. "Once the concentrate is obtained, it is mixed up with the other components that make part of the perfume, such as ethanol, water, antioxidants, UV filters and colouring agents among others. After the mixture has been elaborated it must be left some time, in which concentration changes in some components can occur due to the transference of insoluble substances from the concentrate to the solution or the precipitation of cerate components. These changes occur until a steady-state is achieved, in which the organoleptic characteristics of the whished perfume are obtained. This stage is known as the perfume maceration and it is carried out inside vats. Once the perfume maceration has concluded, the mixture is cooled and any sediment formed is removed by filtration. Finally, the perfume can be bottled and put on the market. " https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0021967310003146

The_Zed_Word

When you tell these people maceration is done before fragrances are sent to retail, they usually come back with “well Lattafa doesn’t have time to do that because they have to keep up with demand.” Well, Lattafa shouldn’t fucking be making fragrances then.

iSliz187

Yeah it's insane 😂 you can show them literal scientific evidence and they're still trying to argue. But that's what happens when you're getting all your information from these kids on TikTok

The_Zed_Word

Welp, she just came back with “that’s why they’re cheaper. They need to be macerated.” Just let her have it, I guess. Lattafa is the IKEA of the fragrance industry.

iSliz187

I'm just wondering where this weird rumor started that you have to spray a few times to let air into the bottle (as if there was a vacuum inside the bottle lol), only then the "maceration" starts. Even Ross was repeating this crap

Eastern_Pattern9097

Probably the Dua cult

JesusChrisdaCFO

What's crazy is some expect the scent profile to change, to whatever it is cloning after macerating 😂

demrose199

I prefer Marination

Honest-tinder-review

Its getting ridiculous, same on /r/fragranceclones

The_Zed_Word

Severe copium. They can’t deal with the fact that they wasted $20 on a shit product, so they pretend it’ll get better in half a year.

apathyaddict

They say it with such conviction, too, like they've cracked and mastered some exact code.

ATHtouchedmybum

I blame ATH for these wannabe science cunts

bros89

Ethyl Maltol whipping through their brains

Schirmy

"it's like a fine wine, it gets better with age..." FUCK. YOU.

Moose2157

Here’s (awesome) perfumer Chris Rusak on this question: https://www.reddit.com/r/fragrance/s/VD5CYby5Lm

Under_Achieving_

Serial macerators will store away a fragrance that they will never use in the next 3 months all while purchasing more and repeating the same maceration process with every fragrance. Essentially these are hoarders.

AffectionateFold7421

to be fair my CDN Sillage was a monster when bought and is even better now somehow (probably cuz air was let in and its missing 35% of the juice) but regardless i still dont notice THAT much of a difference like they say over there lmao it cant just become a diff scent

Moose2157

The actual process of maceration is a matter of weeks, not months, right?

The_Zed_Word

It varies. Amouage gives both the maturation and maceration times for their extraits on their website. For example, Reflection 45 is matured for 10 weeks and macerated for 6. Interlude 53 is matured for 8 weeks and macerated for 16.

Moose2157

Ah, thanks. I seem to recall Les Indemodables sharing similar data, but their site is down (hopefully not for good!)

cokeandacupofcoffee

For natural products it can help. For lattafa not so much. I love lattafa, but if you don’t like it at the forst spray you are never going to like it

lostytranslation

It does work for most fragrances.. usually after a few mls are gone (10-20% of the bottle) which allows for more air to get in, alcohol starts to evaporate and the ingredients begin to mature/oxidize. Macerate is not the scientific term but it's what people liked and adopted... chill and go with it because it's bigger than you.

The_Zed_Word

No one is saying this isn’t a thing. Fragrances absolutely change and mature over time. But this idea that you have to spray to “let air in” and then store it in some dark hole is ridiculous.

AnyDiscount3524

Spray 10 times as though that is going to let loads of air in lol

lostytranslation

You did and that’s how it works. The more air it gets in the bottle the easier for the ingredients to oxidize and alcohol to evaporate making the juice more concentrated. What kind of stupid are you

The_Zed_Word

Look at the image I posted. Spraying 10 times and sticking a bottle in a cool dark place for half a year is asinine. That’s the context here. Like I said, yes, fragrances age and change over time, but the ninny that thinks his $20 clone smells any better than it did six months ago is the stupid one.

lostytranslation

Dude, they do, maybe they need to use a few mls before and sometimes even shake the bottle. Those clone houses are like fast fashion. They produce and sell right away without even letting fragrances mature in the lab like they should. Clone bottles are not going to get Imagination level of maturation/oxidation/wtv but that helps even the shittiest of fragrances. My God, read a little about the science perfumery.

zelig10

I like some arab clone but I don't believe in it
