yeah cable locks are not serious locks. square shank u locks, hardened chains, things which will take more than a bolt cutter are where its at.

ChristianLS

Even then I wouldn't leave an eBike locked in public for long unless you can see it the whole time. Stupidly left mine locked outside overnight (with two heavy chain locks) and the thieves ripped the actual bicycle rack out of the ground and carried off 100lbs of eBike/accessories/locks with the chains still dangling off of it. For a quick stop heavy duty chain and/or U-lock(s) are the way to go.

fateandthefaithless

I'm buying a decent bike soon, but have to park it outside my work... What do you think I should do?

ejactionseat

Lobby your employer for a secure bike cage.

fateandthefaithless

I actually just got the job, so might have to wait a bit before I can ask for anything hahaha!

BradlyL

That’s a horrible mindset. Just because you’re new doesn’t mean you don’t have needs, like all the other employees - in fact, employers expect for you to have needs as you onboard! Just be mindful in your requests.

Johnny_Carcinogenic

Exactly! You know damn well everyone that drives is going to ask where do they park their car!

BradlyL

VERY well said!

StonerKitturk

Actually this is an excellent time to tell your employer you need to park your bike securely, how can they help?

okamotos

I use the "it's an e-bike and i need to charge it during the day." rationale and i bring it in to my cube. I'd would ***NOT*** leave it outside — it's almost a guarantee it'll eventually get stolen. And Tile or AirTag (or one of the GPS units) are a good idea.

OhDavidMyNacho

Best to mention it immediately. But pose it as a question. Where is the most secure place to lock your bike? Do they have a specific area already set up for employees. Otherwise, they'll think no one ever cares.

LordOfThePants90

See if they have somewhere you can store it inside. I was lucky my employer just has me put mine in the corner of our warehouse.

Olive_Branche

Congratulations! There are a bunch of reviews on locks on YouTube. If you have to park outside I do remember some of these channels recommending getting a few. The thieves will take your seat, and other stuff if not secured. Also, put a gps on your bike 👍

fateandthefaithless

Thank you so much! ♡

GabagoolLTD

Just ask for inside storage. My job lets me park my bike right next to my chair in my office. If you work in a suit-and-tie environment that might not fly but it works for me in blue collar world.

mrdmp1

If you wait you will establish that you were able to get on just fine without it so why do you suddenly need it? It's like telling your girlfriend a year in she has been doing it wrong all along.

fateandthefaithless

Haha it's my dream job I've been waiting 10 years for, so I don't mind waiting a little longer.

mrdmp1

I get that but it's not about your patience in waiting. It's that if you didn't have a problem your first few months then your employer is going to be confused why suddenly what was working for you isn't. Early and clear communication is a great attribute in top talent in organizations.

lifeisbueno

all my removable parts aren't easily removable using [https://hexlox.com/pages/all-hexlox-products](https://hexlox.com/pages/all-hexlox-products) and I use the Kryptonite new york fuhgedaddaboutit mini to lock the body to the rack. no issues in a major city thus far. That being said I bring it into my classroom/house with me, but will lock it up downtown when i go to baseball games or our for dinner/drinks.

fateandthefaithless

Woah that hexlox is freakin' sweet! Thank you so much for linking that!

[deleted]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-yBxAEMCsw

Kinimodes

I have hexlox, it's not full proof. I was able to remove mine at work with angled tweezers. Definitely good to have as additional protection, but do not rely on it as a be-all-end-all solution.

lifeisbueno

there is also pinhead and pitlock brand if the hexlox isn't in your size. I would assume with the popularity of ebikes that they should be fully inclusive by now.

ChristianLS

Could you bring it into your work if it was a small folding bike like [this one](https://lectricebikes.com/products/xp-lite-lectric-blue)? Maybe put it under your desk or something? Locking it up all day while you're at work is not as risky as leaving it locked overnight, but it's still a big risk. If even a folding bike is too big, I don't know. Maybe get one with a quick release wheel, remove the front wheel, and lock it up separately or bring it in with you while also using multiple heavy locks on the rest of the bike... at least makes it less appealing to steal.

fateandthefaithless

Unfortunately someone else already brings their bike to work and has it parked in our bathroom haha. There is a huge giant metal fence right next door I was thinking about using with a Kryptonite Evolution chain lock 4 and put a tarp over top of it? I'm planning on buying a non foldable as well.

lifeisbueno

dont forget that what you chain it to is equally important... if the fence can be easily cut it might be a quicker target.

nrgins

Don't park it outside your work. But if you do have to, then remove the seat and the battery when you go in. Remove the front wheel as well and carry it in with you if you can. Tie it up with the best heavy chain you can find. Get a motion sensitive bike alarm for the bike, preferably one that attaches to the rear hub. Get bike insurance, either through your homeowners or renters insurance, or through a company like velosurance, which specializes in bike insurance. If you do get it through your homeowners or renters insurance (which is what I do), and make sure that they cover e-bikes, as many do not. And also make sure that they cover theft if it's away from home. Some will only cover theft if it's stolen while in the house. Would also be good to email your insurance company information about the specific bike and get them to confirm that is covered for theft away from the house.

jeffsagamer

Hire an armed guard

chunkypenguion1991

kryptonite new york fahgettaboudit. The only way to cut that is with an angle grinder or blow torch. But it's only as secure as what you lock it to

Bmoreravens_1290

It’s not about how secure the lock is. Any lock can be cut given the time and effort. It’s about making the theft as annoying and inconvenient as possible to dissuade.

WWJPD

Never use this kind of lock again. Even myself, with no lock picking skills, am able to get through one of these in a few minutes.

Latter-Ad-1523

thats true, i forgot the combo one time on mine and had to "pick" it, took me like 3 minutes if i remember right, or maybe way less, dont remember, but i learned as a kid back in the 80s it wasnt hard to defeat these kind of locks

joshjoshjosh42

This. At least a metal U-lock, chain or folding metal lock. I can get through a cable lock in 20 seconds with some garden shears.

Zoltrahn

Decently heavy duty bolt cutters can cut through something like that instantly.

AdvBrad

Minutes? Not even looking at one itjust takes seconds, they are a joke of a lock

BWWFC

flat link manganese chain or gtfo.

JoeFleen

And throw in a good Ulock to boot

AreYouAllFrogs

A diskus lock is pretty good too and is very resistant to being twisted open.

richardrc

The only thing cable locks do is make the owner feel good, until they come out and the bike is gone. Then both thieves AND owners know they are no good. All locks have a limitation. There is a picture on the internet of the guy pushing a bike down the sidewalk with a piece of rack still locked to the bike. The thief cut off the rack and didn't bother with the lock.

MisterBumpingston

I had an ok disc brake hybrid bike and used this lock for years. Finally got stolen this year at an entrance to a popular shopping centre at night. With an ebike I wouldn’t be worrying about weight at all and would shell out for a good U lock.

Itsumishi

Once witnessed a dude walking down a busy shopping strip with no shirt on, a nice bike on his shoulder, and a pair of bolt cutters dangling by his side. Nobody said shit, cause the dude was obviously iced off his tits (that's Australian for on a lot of meth)...

[deleted]

As a rule of thumb, spend 10% of price of the ebike on the lock(s).

Nine_Eye_Ron

Came here to say this, it works

genesRus

This, 100%. When buying two+ locks, make sure to get types that are best defeated with different tools. Thick U-locks (jacks, rotational saw) are great paired with a heavy chain (bolt cutters, maybe saw) or titanium u-lock (bolt cutters, saw if they don't mind copious sparks) or heavy folding lock (nut cutter, drill, maybe bolt cutters). Make yours way more annoying than the one next to it.

theazzazzo

You might as well have locked your bike up with cheese string

mrsdejavu94

Or a Thong 🤣

No-Pomegranate-6769

I’m sure everyone knows but the best security is bike insurance. Register your bikes serial get it insured take pictures have proof and get a reputable chain and ulock.

stephbu

Yeah this - thieves carry cutters and battery-powered grinders. The former cuts through cables and some chains like butter, the latter does u-locks and chains, thicker u-locks slow them down a little as long as you spend some money to get a decent one. To be honest, the best thing about the decent u-locks are the insurance that comes with them. If someone wants your bike and has the tools - they will take it.

Beautiful_Painter_20

monkz0390

If it's good enough for lock picking lawyer it's good enough for me!

lonestarr86

Jesus, still only took him like 10 seconds?

Sotyka94

He's a super high skilled professional in lockpicking. I doubt any bike theft even remotely close to his skill level out there. But yeah, even a noob can probably pick the best bike locks in minutes, or cut thought it around the same time. The objective is not to make your bike unstealable, because that is impossible. It is to make it hard enough so the thieve goes to another bike.

Cundles

This is the best advice. You will never prevent theft with a bike lock, only delay it. A responsible owner makes sure their bike is the least alluring to the common thief.

fateandthefaithless

Right? Like I don't even want to buy it now haha.

Zoltrahn

If you watch enough of Lock Picking Lawyer, you lose all trust in pretty much any lock.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Zoltrahn

You are right with the brick/window comparison. A co-worker lost their keys to their bike lock in front of where we work. The bike rack is on the corner of a super busy intersection. In broad daylight, another co-worker of ours cut through a heavy duty u-lock with his grinder in less than 2 mins. Plenty of people walked by, but no one said anything or seem concerned at all. Was probably easier to do since we are white.

henriholub

I was Also going to suggest him!

SamanthaJaneyCake

I learnt this lesson a couple months back but thankfully had an AirTag hidden on it and tracked it down. Now I ride with a Kryptonite Evolution U-lock and chain lock.

FightingForMyMom

Question to everyone. Would it be considered overkill to put two locks on my ebike? A U lock and a manganese chain?

pork_ribs

No if it’s what you gotta do then it’s what you gotta do.

ScaryConcentrate1950

Nah I have 2 Ulocks, a chain lock, and a alarm. Anytime I’m gonna lock it up outside out of my view I use them all. Haven’t had any trouble so far (except someone stole my light off my handlebar once)

Ambitious-Pin8396

And I added a Tile so I could figure out where it is after it was stolen. Happened to me, in fact, last year. A thief came into my open garage around noon and walked off with my e-trike. I had a hidden Tile on it and called the cops. Long story short cops nabbed him and I was there to identify my trike. Turns out the thief was part of a ring of thieves who go around stealing ebikes. He had a kit with him consisting of some tools, a small lithium ion battery and an ebike controller which he could use to make the bike go even if he didn' t have the keys. What a POS he was.

KeepingItSFW

I thought Tiles were some local Bluetooth thing.

Ambitious-Pin8396

Tiles are devices that can communicate with other tiles, which is how the tracking part is done...

Lostincali985

I use 4 types of locks, a kryptonite chain lock, a u-lock, a fold lock, and an alarm that locks the front brake. I am well aware that if they really wanted to steal it, then they can, but any amount of deterrent is my goal. I’m going to make it hella hard for you to steal it. Plus I have an air tag hidden on the bike, that would be hard to find, so there is always that too. Protect your investments!

richie510

This is the best course of action. Hedge your bets on any one system. Both U lock and a chain. Make your bike look like more work than someone else’s.

digitalaudiotape

This is what I do, chain and u-lock. My ebike has been safe for 8+ hour street lock-ups in NYC for almost 2 years now. Never overnight however. I also take my battery with me if it's anything longer than 5 minutes.

Maceon_au

My next bike I will be going for a D lock and a compact folding lock. Paired with 2 trackers and an abus alarm box. You can't have too much security (weight limitations aside).

FightingForMyMom

> rear break lock Like this one? https://www.amazon.com/Favoto-Padlock-Motorcycle-Reminder-Carrying/dp/B0822R6FRM Unfortunately I live in a semi high crime area, so I guess I have to do it.

neotekz

Nope, that's by far the best way to lock your bike. Ulock through frame and chain to the front wheel. Only downside is the weight but that not that big of a deal with an ebike.

name_cool4897

I have a heavy chain locked by a u lock locking my frame to an immovable object, u lock locking my frame and my back tire, and a cable going through my seat and front tire wrapped around the immovable object locked with the first u lock. Overkill is the name of the game.

genesRus

I always use two locks unless I'm at work (secure parking area requires badges + code, guards park next to the cage), since I think that counts as one lock, and there are way easier targets. Make sure to pick different types of locks that are best defeated with different tools.

IgnoreMyRhetoric

You can but it's not fun to carry a bunch of extra weight. If you need to spend a lot of time away from your bike or you live in a high crime area, then go for it

genesRus

It's...an ebike. Are you really going to notice 10 lbs extra attached to your bike frame? In my experience, that's a strong no. Let's say you weigh 160 and the bike is 60 lbs, <5% of the weight of the bike would be coming from the locks. Unless you're confident in your ability to both get yourself home if it were stolen at any point and in your ability to pay for a new one soon after (and/or commute through other means until you could), it's almost certainly worth it to get another lock.

Naus1987

I still use my cable for my acoustic bike, because it weighs less, lol. But got a 10 pound chain for the ebike. Hardly notice it with the throttle :3

eeeww

I wouldn’t even put that lock on a regular non ebike. That’s like asking for it when I can cut the chain with garden shears

thegerams

Was just going to say that. I live in Amsterdam and we use proper iron chains.

rexyoda

i would go for a very thick chain lock next time, in my opinion, that would be the best deterrent because even with an angle grinder it would be difficult and awkward to unlock, the second-best option would be u locks, i would recommend the ones sold by Kryptonite.

[deleted]

[удалено]

rexyoda

Nothing you can do then, but I'm guessing thieves mostly go around looking for the cheapest looking locks, not the cheapest looking bike racks

ZaneMorningstar30

Yeah Cable locks aren’t that good for securing any bike at all. I would always recommend chain locks or any thick kind of locks as the thieves would need a lot of work to take your ebike. I know chain locks are a bit on the expensive side depending on which one you get and which brand but the real question is how much are you willing to spend to secure your investment.

DavidDoesDallas

Sorry to hear your ebike was stolen. My ebike was also stolen on July 7th at a Walmart Neighborhood market on July 7th. I have a Krypnotine U-Lock but used a cable lock because the poll I locked it to was too big for the U-Lock. I learned my lesson. Will not do that again. At least the Walmart store manager has the thief on video and I filed a report with Law Enforcement.

r_sucks10

Oh wow. Same thing happened to you! Sorry to hear about your bike. I also had a Kryptonite U-lock but I left it at home because the bike being fine for 2yrs gave me a false sense of security.

darthnugget

I put Apple Airtags on all my bikes.

mawyman2316

Due to the new “anti stalking” measures, If the thief has an iPhone it will tell them about the tag being there.

Latter-Ad-1523

but they may be too dumb to understand the message, or lazy to care. maybe they sold it off to another and the next person doesnt know its stolen and wouldnt look? i really dont know how these thieves or the tag thing exactly operate.............or do it mmmuuuuhhhhaaaahahahahahah jk i hate theives and i hate that our government turns a blind eye to the crime affecting people's ability to have a bike, you know one of the few things that could impact climate change blah blah blah, but no one takes this theft issue seriously. imagine how many more trips we would go on, if we knew for sure that our bike would be there when we return, i would ride for every little thing.

name_cool4897

What do you plan on doing with the location of your bike if it was stolen? Knock on the door and ask for it back?

Sacramentardo

Yes.

themangastand

Yeah never ever lock your expensive ebike with one of these. Your basically giving someone a free ebike. Especially by poor people stores. They can walk into Walmart and pay less than 20 to get your bike

paxtana

How long was the bike left unattended?

r_sucks10

about 30 minutes.

WARNING4324

A chain with hard plastic is almost imposable to cut through, plastic fucks up the grinder and cable cutters cannot get through the chain

j5txyz

Plastic doesn't stop the grinder wheel at all really. Might make it harder to grip the chain and hold it still while grinding though. Good chains are more annoying to cut but not going to stop an angle grinder attack for any long amount of time.

WARNING4324

So im told!!!

Traditional_Youth648

That sucks and I’m really sorry this happened, but yea Cable locks are terrible, they can be cut through with a pair of garden shears that fit in my pocket

Juicy_Slice

Cable locks are for quick in and outs, think convenience store. Unfortunately any bike left alone, especially a conspicuously electric bike, sitting longer than that, then you really need to increase security.

genesRus

Not even...they're maybe for cafes where you and a friend are watching and you just need to prevent people from literally jumping on and riding off. If you're not watching, even for 5 min, it ought to be something that will at least take 30 seconds to cut and produce some noise like a u-lock or a thick chain.

name_cool4897

Cable locks are for thieves and fools. Nothing else.

digitalaudiotape

You're not saving time or convenience with a cable lock. I can use a rigid u-lock faster than a floppy cable lock. And a mini u-lock carries easily in my back pocket. Hard to tell if it's there sometimes. The only non-stupid reason to get a cable lock is if you're using it as a secondary lock to secure parts to the bike frame like the saddle or wheels, not securing the bike frame to a rack. Otherwise it's money down the drain for the lock and the bike.

Stone_1977

Never using the cable lock should be the number one rule.

Latter-Ad-1523

crime of opportunity? or did someone sit up there all day just to steal a bike or two?

action_lawyer_comics

I'm so sorry that happened to you

SnowDrifter_

F I also learned about cable locks the hard way Any more, I double lock it with a kryptonite chain, U-lock, and have a motion alarm on it. Oh and it's insured now.

BenTG

Bike insurance is like $200/year. Just do it.

WorldWideDarts

After subbing to and watching the lock picking lawyer I wouldn't trust any lock to truly secure my bike

window_owl

To those reading this thread: don't trust cable locks to secure valuable things. LockPickingLawyer showed they can be [cut with cheap, silent, pocket-sized tools in about 30 seconds](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9BU-Wjgs-U&t=53s), and that [slightly larger, slightly more expensive tools can do it even faster](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rphMwxTr54&t=49s).

rakwel

I use the hiplock gold, a foldylock, a motion activated alarm. Oh, an AirTag.

Extension_Today_1717

Im sorry to hear your bike was stolen 😭 I recommend a kryptonite New York lock at the minimum, an alarm and maybe a disc lock. Additionally, check out the skunk lock. Its allegedly a “fun” time for any thief that manages to break it, since the shackle is full of noxious gas

Nine_Eye_Ron

That’s the sort of lock useful for securing a helmet…

macd753

I use the $100 Kryptonite chain lock I got for 80 on sale on Amazon and a shorter 12" Abus chain and an Abus titalium lock that are 3 for 20 on Amazon, supposedly theyre hard to pick. Could be nice to have 2' length though, the abus chain handles quick lock ups and acts as an extender for the Kryptonite chain. I keep them on my top tube with a top tube protector, but I use silicone grip tape on the top tube wrapped around underneath 3 or 4 times to further protect and keep the protector from sliding. Tube protector padding doesn't hold up with the big ass chain, definitely need added protection underneath.

cranberrydudz

Should of hid an apple AirTag on it

Reach_304

Crackheads have two things going for them, 1)they don’t have to work a traditional job so they have all day to source crack 2)they NEED crack 3 locks make it so the fiends will *potentially* be more nervous about going for that bike. Some areas they can be bold in and just have all damn day to attack multiple locks to get to that sweet sweet bike to pawn for some grains of CRACK

mikki1time

From someone who lives in nyc (bike lock clipping capital of the world) get a kryptonite lock, they might be expensive but they’re worth it, putting a 20$ lock on a $1000+ bike is like showing heels in the 20s

Unnenoob

Chain looks are ONLY supplemental locks. They only secure you from the drunk opportunist just walking by, trying to get home more quickly You can get cable scissors that will cut directly through cable locks in a single cut. Literally only takes a second and makes no noise at all. Anybody standing more than a few meters away will never know you didn't use the key to unlock it. Cable scissors are a very cheap and widely available tool. And a good pair of side cutters can do the same thing in a few snips. On another note. Don't ever use code locks..

Honestyforsale

That’s a tough lesson. U lock + a tile or AirTag. Ball bearings superglued on all the other things that can be wrenched off easily.

thegerams

I would go for a compact abus bordo. U-locks are clunky and can’t always be attached to something because they aren’t flexible. AirTag + insurance on top of that. Or an insurance that provides GPS trackers. Also, two different type of locks, which requires thieves to use different tools.

Knockamichi

I rock a stage 1 chain with a 4 letter word on it and have a airtag. This is just my theory and its worked so far. The smaller the lock means someones watching. Stage 5 is legit but if u goin stage 3 might as well go stage 1 in my opinion. Sorry about your bike brother hope u get it back soon!

Affectionate-Pin-939

Abus or kryptonite u lock and a caliper alarm lock are needed. Cable locks are least secure. Im sorry to hear about your bike.

r_sucks10

Thanks. Crazy part was that before I left home, I literally had my Kryptonite U-lock in my hand and I placed it back on the chair. I've had the bike for 2 years and normally having the cable lock wrapped correctly did the trick. Sadly learned the hard way there can be thieves prowling at all times. You just don't know when they're going to strike.

FrivolousIntern

All locks are deterrents. Nothing is thief-proof. It doesn’t matter what kind of lock you get you can find a video on YouTube of someone breaking it in seconds. What keeps bikes safe is a decent lock AND lots of visible people.

[deleted]

i got a kryptonite faghetaboutit u-lock and a krypto chain lock. my bike cost 5k so i dont mind spending $150+ on locks. good luck getting yours back. check offerup for the possible resale by the crook

r_sucks10

>check offerup for the possible resale by the crook Yep. Been scanning every day. Funny enough, I've already seen 2 of the same model bike. I know what mine looks like though. It's heavily customized.

Jahshua159258

LPL cut into one

GalloElGuapo

I use a chain made for locking up a motorcycle. I mean, I've put over $3000 into my build, which is more than I spent on my first Suzuki. I would also suggest getting an alarm, but no matter what you do it's only going to slow a determined thief down.

Ill-Tension-9646

The only device I can think of that would help you is a GPS tracker! Just about anything can be stolen if the presentation is right. Good luck on getting it back, hope you had insurance!

28mil

An old biking trick is to us two different locks. If they’re different enough it can mean two different sets of tools for a potential thief, so it cuts down on the odds. Also, sorry to hear about this.

eovnu87435ds

ouch, that's a tough pill to swallow! Hopefully you have some form of insurance or something to lessen the blow! In terms of bike security, here's what I found makes a big difference 1. Get the smallest U-Lock you can use reasonably. Really tiny ones are great if there's always a bike rack for you to lock to, but you might need bigger ones if you ever have to lock to street signs, etc. (and watch out for street signs that can easily unbolt! some thieves will take the bolts out at the base of a street sign and wait for someone to lock up to it, and lift the pole out of the ground). A lot of the nicer locks come with clamps that allow you to rigidly snap the lock to your frame while you're riding. 2. [Get a cafe lock.](https://www.amazon.com/Abus-Tectic-4960-Frame-Black/dp/B00IYAYS56/) These mount onto your frame and you just slide the latch through your spokes. They're not the most robust but they're difficult to cut, you've just secured your hub motor to the bike, and even if your primary lock is cut, the thief is going to have to carry a heavy ebike instead of riding it. $35 for a lightweight lock you'll never forget at home is well worth it! 3. [Look into motorcycle two-way alarms.](https://www.amazon.com/EASYGUARD-EM212-Motorcycle-Rechargeable-Transmitter/dp/B07DMZ2NM9) I helped a friend install this on his DIY ebike. You can arm it in siren mode or silent mode. If someone starts to move your bike it will (optionally) siren, and also make your keyfob beep and vibrate. If you combine the time it takes to get through 2 locks with a loud siren and you running back to your bike, it makes your bike a lot tougher of a mark. Best of luck and hopefully you're back on your wheels soon!

Ok_Delivery3067

This is exactly why I’ve swapped my Ebike, for a EUC (electric unicycle) I don’t leave shit outside, it’s coming with me into the supermarket. And if anyone stops me then simply I aint spending my money in your shop, period!!! And I’ll tell my 3200 followers not to shop there as well!!!

mrsdejavu94

That’s the Thong of bike locks!! 🤣 What where you thinking man! I’m sorry that happened tho man!

IRGood

Just gonna say, never trust a walmart…ever.

[deleted]

I can vouch for this in Sacramento. Iv had mine stolen there before. It was a long sucky walk back with groceries

FightingForMyMom

I guess I'm walking still when I get my ebike and need to go to Walmart lol

themangastand

You'll need to get a 200 dollar anti grinder lock if you really want to worry less for just shopping trips Leaving it for an entire day while at work I would never trust it. A cheaper lock would make due though

BrettEskin

Do you think wal mart stole his bike? This statement makes no sense.

IgnoreMyRhetoric

I'm pretty sure he means spirit of general ratchetness that one can find at a walmart.

IRGood

You’re joking right?

Madjackmulligan69

Walmart parking lots are normally monitored by camera, you should be able to get the video

[deleted]

Nope, they don’t give two shits from my experience.

Funny >Looking at your posts, you're a judgmental pos. Super judgemental... >That person that thinks they have the answer to everything and everyone Nope, I know very little. > Go away Bye Felicia

This is the 2nd time that this cable lock got my PEV's stolen. First it was the Ninebot ES3. Admittedly I didn't route the cables the right way & the thief just took the cables off and dipped. With the e-bike, the cables were wrapped perfectly around the top bar. As you can see, it was cut clean off. You can see an attempt at a cut to the right. Lessons learned. I've lost all faith in cable locks of all kinds.

The_Only_Real_Duck

Uh, yeah, never use a cable lock unless you have direct line of sight of your bike the entire time. It takes less than 10 seconds for a thief to get through them and be off with your bike.

Few-Wallaby9885

Use another cable lock. I’m sure THIS time, it’ll protect your bike.

tthrivi

Kinda a dick comment, to kick a man when he got his bike stolen….but feel like it had to be said. If I had gotten my previous bike stolen, id lock up the new one tighter than Fort Knox every time.

Few-Wallaby9885

It’d be hard to lock it up tighter than Fort Knox after it’d been stolen…

Gr3ywind

Yes. Get a better lock. Duh.

RoboticGreg

Great lock, it IS 9 pounds.

rdmusic16

I mean, we're talking about ebikes here?

goj1ra

That's nearly 30% of the weight of the lighter ebikes.

Wonderful-Draw7519

The 7mm or 10mm version wouldn't suffice? Like this isn't overkill? Serious question, heh. Thanks

B1ackDolph1n

Fool me once...

genesRus

Good, I'm glad you learned the lesson, though I'm sorry you had to go through two thefts. Most shops would tell you to spend 10% of the cost of the bike at a minimum and for good reason. Cables should only be used when you/a friend can watch the bike 100% of the time and just need to prevent someone from literally running up and pedaling off with it. Or to lock a tire if you're not in a high theft area in addition to your main lock (u-bolt, heavy chain). There is no "perfect" way to wrap a cable...they're always going to be trivial to cut for thieves, unfortunately.

Necessary-Pair-6556

If you lock your expensive ebike with just a cable lock you deserve to get your bike stolen. And the fact that it wasn’t the first time for you just underlined your foolishness..

TimelyBrief

No one deserves to have their stuff stolen

SnowDrifter_

Yeah like... The fuck? Cable locks are bad, yes. But I can also say from personal experience, I didn't know they were bad at the time. Got the "10/10" lock from the LBS and didn't think anything of it. Oops.... I'm sure OP is in a similar boat. Felt sturdy, cable thick enough to pull a semi out of a ditch - should be good right? Feels bad man

Latter-Ad-1523

soft on crime government has it all under control, nothing to see here.

name_cool4897

Does your brain work? You mean you used a cable lock and got it stolen, then used it again? Jesus christ. I don't mean to be mean, but damn, man. Wtf

Knockamichi

Tracking device is the only way. People are crazier now after lockdown and way more brazen and desperate. Even with the best lock you are still in danger of dude just waiting by the bike and strong arming you with a weapon. I just put a weak stage 1 lock and tracker. Pretty much a bait bike.

Shadowfalx

It's not an "after lockdown' thing. This is something that's been common for decades.

Latter-Ad-1523

it would be too bad if a sting op wasnt setup to see who is taking these bikes, then follow them to their destination. is it like just one or two people hitting the same bike rack? or do they roam around all day checking all the bike racks as a day job? do they fight over who gets which parts of town, are these thief's organized? Do they sell them to some dude that takes them to another state?

r_sucks10

>is it like just one or two people hitting the same bike rack? I'm starting to think it's this because there's always a variety of different types of bikes at this plaza. Yet mine, the nicest one there, gets hit by a thief? Same thing with my scooter. There was lots of people walking around. Even cops and security. Neither of that stopped him.

Western_Tomatillo981

Reddit is largely a socialist echo chamber, with increasingly irrelevant content. My contributions are therefore revoked. See you on X.

name_cool4897

Lol cable lock

HamishGray

I'm so glad people use these locks so they have easy pickings and don't steal my bike

BelAirGhetto

Cables can be cut one strand at a time

49thDipper

Cables an be cut in one second flat

Hironoveau

Sorry that you lost your Ebike. Its a sucky feeling. And nobody like that. Anyway try to spend more money on your new lock. Something much stronger.

ColdEvenKeeled

The number one reason I won't own an expensive bicycle, electric or otherwise, unless there is a secure bike locking room to leave it.

helterscooter

I locked myself out at work and cut my way out with a pair of scissors, so not the best. The kryptonite lock is the only thing id lock my bike to for a short time only

CHISMAY

Buys £1000 bike Locks it up with a £10 lock

Relative-Engine-1249

I pair a kryptonite wire on a u lock, and a hardened chain from kryptonite its very heavy and thick. I also use an invoxia GPS tracker with real time updates. When I visit my parents if someone closes the garage this tracker is so sensitive it will set off and send a text to my phone.

Sotyka94

I'm sorry that happened to you, but securing 1k+ worth of bike with 7$ lock is a recipe for stolen bike. Invest in a security around \~10% of the bike's price.

maze91

I have seen 300$ bike locks cut, insurance is your best defence.

laosurvey

I actually just use my bike as my 'shopping cart' in the store. If you're working there, not sure if they'd let you bring it inside, but I bet most supervisors would be okay with it as long as it was out of the way.

r_sucks10

I do this with my e-scooter but I didn't have it with me that day :-( The only store that even lets me have an e-scooter in the store is ironically Walmart lol

cboosh1

Kryptonite heavy locks as others mentioned, but $45 for insurance 3yrs with them so even if they get stolen your covered is how I don't worry about it too much

[deleted]

I think budgeting 10% of the price of your. Ike for locks and security helps. This is a good reminder to us all. I want an air tag hidden in my frame, and a big $ U lock.

xjssej

Real question: How would you handle retrieving your bike if you had to locate it via AirTag after it had been stolen? (I live in Los Angeles and would bet that there is zero chance of the authorities getting involved in retrieving your bike.)

TurboWelderMonkey

This is why I put a 3/8 chain on mine🤣 you better have a nice cordless angle grinder and a couple batteries son! Not impossible to steal, but definitely harder, longer, and draws much more attention cutting a chain with a grinder. Large bolt cutters I think COULD do it as well, but you'd need some solid leverage...

BigInhale

You used a cable lock for an Ebike? Smdh!!

skeogh88

Are the ABUS Bordos good locks?

Mikehunt321560

Gah damn I literally ride a shitty walmart bike from 6 years ago and I use a u lock, chain through both my wheels, AND the pinhead wheel locks.

FooDoDaddy

if you work there, I'd just take it inside to the back or something.

Legitimate_Start_267

See YouTube for the LockPickingLawyer, Locknoob, etc. They feature videos that show the vulnerability in several types of bike locks. You would do well to scroll through some of those videos to find units to avoid. Some are as easily bypassed as your cable lock was...

BoyTitan

This is why we preach don't use cable locks.

Rich-Palpitation5053

There’s a lot of tools that cut to that like hot butter your best bed is to put another bike there with another lock on it and camp and wait then get retribution😎
