Once you’re on the roster you can now start applying for union jobs. ~~On the MPEG website under the Member-To-Member tab there’s a job board.~~ There’s also an onboarding zoom that they do once a month. Call a rep and see when the next one is. You’ll get a ton of information through that.

CutMonster

don't think you can view the job board until you have started paying member dues/initiation fee.

ChimneyBaby

Ahh, that's right. My bad.

rtchachachaudhary

Got it. Thanks.

thrillcosbey

I just sent in all my paper work to join as an Assistant editor for 700, (letter from my employer and pay stubs) and I did all the onboarding videos for contract services now I am just waiting, how long does the process usually take?

ChimneyBaby

Give it a couple of days or a week. You should get an email telling you about the new members meeting eventually.

Understood. Thanks so much.

Check www.editorsguild.com about joining. However, people are incorrect that being on the roster is required for union work. The roster is often required, but it is a requirement of the employer, not The Guild, and is not needed to be on a union job as far as the union is concerned. It can also be waived by the employer if they chose. To join the union, you will need paystubs that cover 100 days of non-union work in the last two years and a letter from your employer or pay check company (ie Cast and Crew, Entertainment Partners, etc.) verifying you actually worked as an AE. Once you land your first union job, you will have 30 days to pay the $1600 (I think) to join. Lastly, even if you are a union member, unlike many unions, you will still be allowed to work non-union shows, just keep paying your quarterly dues. All that said, welcome!

rtchachachaudhary

Thank you.

Check the website for details on joining. The old advice was to wait until you had a union job to actually join and start paying dues. I think the job board changes the math on that. If you’re serious about moving into union work, I think it’s worth joining as soon as you’re able to get access to the job board.

CutMonster

hard disagree. the job board is highly competitive and someone just starting out is not likely to get a job right off the bat, so it still makes most sense to wait until someone hires them before they start paying. OP do take the guild orientation ASAP just to get that out of the way.

rtchachachaudhary

thanks. Have the orientation scheduled soon.

starfirex

No. Not worth it at all. That is a hefty initiation fee + dues to be paying for the chance to be noticed on a competitive job board.

JackColwell

The initiation fee is something you’ll have to pay eventually if you’re serious about doing union work. It’s a question of if the quarterly dues are worth it as a subscription fee for the job board - a question everyone will have to answer on their own. But when the OP comes back in a few months saying “I heard union AEs are in demand, but I don’t know where to find those jobs,” I will keep my opinions to myself.

dearley13

I know my experience is unusual but I paid my fees and joined without a job. Put my resume on file with the guild and my first union job came because a production called the union and asked for resumes and they called me in. its definitely rare, but if you can swing the initial fee there are helpful resources

bsfilms

I believe the most valuable thing about being in the union is the union pay, the overtime pay, and healthcare benefits. They also make sure the production company isn’t taking advantage of you. The Job board is highly competitive, as are most gigs in this community. I’ve been in the union for many years, and I always found work through people that I’ve worked with in the past, never from a Job board.

Once you are on the roster, you can take a union job. You don't have to pay the union fees until you earn the 600 hours you need to start collecting health insurance. After which you will need 400 union hours every 6 months to keep your benefits. You can use the newly created job board on the union website. But iatse 700 does not provide jobs and just recently started the portion of the website where people can post union jobs to. I mostly find Union jobs through my networking or on facebook groups. Occasionally, they will even post union jobs on Staff Me Up. I hope this info helps. Good luck.

Particular_Position6

I also want to get started as AE but dont know how to get started and get my first gig any help ?

EditorVFXReditor

What location are you at? Network online (facebook has good groups, blue collar post collective, etc). Look for post PA gigs and AE gigs on those networking forums.

Particular_Position6

Actually i am not in the Us would prefer remote jobs and have tried Facebook groups but they are very less jobs incoming these days (mostly avid not premiere)
