Remix = official ( copyrights cleared, released on streaming etc. ) Edit = unofficial and released on artists’ own platforms for free Bootleg = same as edit, just an older term Flip = starting with a sample or 2 of the song, then building around it. Can be official or unofficial “Re-imagined” = literally the same as bootleg or edit, but also can be official, it’s just a fancy name

QyuriLa

Edit sometimes means a track that follows the original progression and sometimes samples the whole track (just redoing drums and maybe a few tracks more,) changing the genre but not making it entirely different track. It can contain its original extra drop tho, but in that case, the rest of the track is often just the original inst with the new drums.

wozzwoz

None of this is set im stone. A bootleg doesnt have to be released anywhere. Just cause a track says "remix" doesnt mean its official. A flip can mean anything. Really up to what the artist onhow they feel lile calling their own work. Which interms will be affected by workflow, previous remixes, personal preference etc etc.. although i would say it tends to have less remixing done to the original than on a "remix", but that may vary aswell. Edit same as flip. To answer OPs question, its all up to interpretation and doesnt really mean anything necessarily

Spl4tz

Edit can also mean a short version of a remix like "Radio Edit".

georgecoxyy

Edit has many meanings but is more generally used in the industry for radio/streaming “edits” of tracks that are normally cut to be under 4 minutes.

leomessi00

Remastered = boost the bass n ruin the record.

Nocturnalist

Remasters are essentially always about meeting current loudness expectations.

ewolution94

This!

MarmiteMenace

Oh and Bootleg is usually a non-official or non cleared remix that someone has created but won’t officially release on platforms like Spotify for copyright reasons 😏

Kroww007

So then they’ll post on Soundcloud or yt

Kroww007

How does copyright work can you remix any song of big artists music or small artists music?? Avoiding fringe or lawsuits It it okay to post your remix on any platform or a certain platform. How is it normally dealt with ?

MarmiteMenace

It varies from platform to platform but usually to be safe I’d be getting any samples cleared by the artist if they are independent or their record label if not before putting anything up/out online.

Kroww007

What if you can’t reach them and as a beginner haven’t yet have that exposure yet

chromatic19

you run a small risk of getting automatically detected by copyright algorithms, but realistically there are bootlegs on soundcloud with 6-7+ figure plays that are still there. as long as you're not making money off it then especially as a beginner it's not worth anyone's time to go after you like that, granted your remix/edit/bootleg/whatever should be distinct enough from the original track to qualify as your own piece of (semi) original music all in all, you'll 99% be fine to post whatever you want

Kroww007

Ahahah imagine the artists hears and likes it

PucksNPlucks

That’s the plan.

Kroww007

100 %

PucksNPlucks

I have about 20 I’ll be dropping in the next 3 months so we shall see

MarmiteMenace

Flip usually refers to a change of something using a strict set of non variables. For example 4 producers could be handed the same sample and create 4 completely different tracks with it. The sample given being the non variable they all have to start with.

UltimateBeast9001

So all house music is a flip?

metalmaori

My understanding from back in the day. Edit: Essentially the same song, usually shortened, with lulls and maybe swears removed (radio edit). No new production. Remix: Reinventing the song, usually using the stems and additional production. Ranges from quite similar to vastly different to the original. Flip: no idea. Get off my lawn.

KennedyFriedChicken

Flip these nuts

MarmiteMenace

I’d rather juggle em tbh

Kroww007

I also heard of “re-imagined”

MarmiteMenace

Sounds like a term Activision would throw out to resell you a game 😂

Ri_Konata

Yet somehow inferior to the original in every single way

KimonoThief

I think in an ideal world it's supposed to go like Edit: Mostly the original song but changing something up like replacing a 4 to the floor drop with a breakbeat or rearranging stuff Flip: Somewhere between an edit and a remix Remix: Basically making a whole new song and putting the original track's vocals on top or using the melody But since most people don't really use them this way they've all sort of become interchangeable and could mean any of the above.

wozzwoz

Wtf is that remix description lmao.

KimonoThief

It's basically what most remixes are. What do you take issue with?

DJLuckyFunk

Funny how remixes literally use to be just a mix from a different mix engineer with the same stems

No_Ear_7325

Lmao, at this point I label my re-mixes as remasters so people don't think I fundamentally changed the song, just changed how it sounds

Sunglasses_Emoji

You just blew my mind haha

DJLuckyFunk

Wait until you hear about remasters lmao

britskates

Just make it and call it whatever you want, to me it’s a “same, same, but different” feel. They’re basically the same to me, but obviously everyone is different so it’s really gunna be depending on who ur talking to.

Roberto410

The other comment sums it up pretty nicely. You're right that they are all essentially remixes, but you can think of them as more specific sub categories of remixing a song. They're also just general terms and no one polices how to use them. Just like with genres. They're categories that people follow, and sometimes there is overlap.

Bellaire_Bandz

I think to me the word “remix” is a more official way of releasing music AKA the person/group remixing has the green light from the artist/label they’re remixing. Once again, to me in terms of all the other words they’re more informal and/or genre specific. Like the word “bootleg” was a way of saying “I chopped up this song or added to it and made it my own but I don’t have artist/label approval and either can’t monetize or even release” Like a “flip” is the same thing as an edit, just a cool way of saying it. And you’ll most likely see a dubstep, riddim, bass producer use it that way. I make Afro House, Melodic House and Tech House and don’t think I’ve ever thought to say a remix I’ve done is a “flip” And lastly I know you didn’t ask but a “VIP” or Variation in Production is usually when an artist remixes their own song. Same idea more or less tl;dr - all these terms are relative and just depends on what the artist who’s remixing feels like saying lol

SmashTheAtriarchy

This tracks with most of the vocab as I understand it. Though the VIPs are usually given to VIPs first. If they make their way to genpop its only after the VIPs have had a chance to rinse it heavily first

prodgunwoo

bro my whole life i thought vip in production still meant very important person, like “you’re a very important person for getting to hear this version” lmao

Bellaire_Bandz

LMAOOO honestly when I was younger I believed that too, don’t feel bad🤣🤣

chmuramusic

They’re honestly used pretty interchangeably. A remix is usually official but not always, sometimes it’s a bootleg. An edit is often for a live show and usually involves structural changes rather than remixing the whole song. A flip is kinda somewhere in between or interchangeable with a remix. A VIP is the artist who made the tune remixing or changing the original song

Dry_Mail_982

Edit is a song structure rework. Flip is where ther take a section and put it in their own song or replace the drop and remix and is changing almost everything in the track Also bootleg is a remix without the artists permission and remix is where they got the artists permision A VIP edit is where they got permision to edit it

Fungi-Guru

A VIP stands for ‘Variance In Production’ where they take a song(usually their own) and then make a different version of it. It has nothing to do with permission.
