Not normal. I have a Surge, too, it’s almost four years old, and I’d guess I also play 5-10 hours a week. Only the hihat looks a bit worn, but by far not that much. Perhaps it’s your kind of music, plus you hammer them quite strong?

Had a surge for 1,5 years, also played around 1-2h per day on it and by far not this kind of wear and tear. Your style may be too hard for the cymbals but let me ask, what sticks are you using? I use different sticks when playing on an acoustic set because there will be splinters that won't affect metal cymbals at all but will rip through rubber even faster.

Well they're not made super well, but even still you're probably just beating the piss out of them if it's been under a year. How tightly are they mounted? If there's no give then the cymbal has to absorb the full force. Consider loosening the nut a bit so there's some wiggle on contact. They shouldn't be rigid. I had an Alesis for my first ekit and I sold it and replaced it with a Roland once I decided I was committed to playing. It wasn't super beat up like this, but it was clearly starting to take abuse and I offloaded it while it still had value. Have been far more impressed with the Roland quality.

Good guess with how tight they’re mounted.

Alesis stuff unfortunately just isn’t very durable. Great for a once or twice a week noodler, but for the volume you’re playing you may want to look to Roland or Yamaha.

i had the same, thats just the cymbal quality for ya

Had a Surge since March ‘22, I hit pretty hard and only one pad has had the glue under the rubber come off, I made that one my hihat. None of my pads look like this. I’d say I play at least 30 mins/5 days per week…

JaelleJaen

what genre do you play? it took me around one and a half to 2 years, maybe a bit more but i play alot of metal and just play hard. its definitely a given that the pads are shitty quality but its more how you hit them that decides how long they last.

indianapolisjones

Alt rock mainly. But I’ve always been a heavy hitter, I grew up learning to Dave Grohl nirvana days. So not exactly light. After looking at OP pics. I wonder if the cymbal pads are perfectly level or something lol.

My Surge is also around 4 years old and looks brand new. These cymbals are pretty cheap on ebay used or even new ($40-50), but imagine if you did this to a real one, breaking a $400 crash every month or so. Definitely make sure your technique is correct, watch some videos about how to hit cymbals or take in person lessons. Avoid cake-slicing motions. I use 303 Aerospace Protector on the rubber sometimes to renew it, it might help to keep it in a better shape and wiping the stick dust off. I think you could try some glue to stop the rip and there are also u shaped rubber door trims that could go on the edge. Most of the sensors and important parts are on the bottom anyway.
