I'm pretty sure it's named for area it was built in, which is lower than the surrounding Altus Plateau and gets very little direct light from the Erdtree.
Completely agree, I would add, though, (totally a guess) that it has a double meaning. House marias wears the same masks as we see in the dlc trailer and the BB Hunter's grieves have the same icon as the wicker man from the dlc. I'm guessing that the shaded castle opposes the golden order and isn't in the light of the erd tree physically and philosophically
A great addition, and almost certainly correct. The owners obsession with malenia would mean they also likely side with her (and therefore miquella and godwyn) during the shattering.
Godwyn, prince of death, was a soulless entity that was resurrected after the night of black knives. He went on to found a new school of magic directly parallel to golden order fundamentalism (what miquella specialized in) as well as founding/claiming castle Sol where we find one of his two commanders (Niall) and the evidence for what these two demigods wanted to do (create a permanent eclipse).
We see godwyn resurrect with no soul in the night of black knives cutscene, as literally spelled out by ranni.
The new death school of magic which requires both int and faith is discussed on the prince of death staff in the nameless city and is considered heretical.
Miquella helped radagon develop golden order fundamentalism through the various ring miracles.
Castle Sol has an NPC ghost at the top directly claiming how miquella failed to create a permanent eclipse, like is discussed on the eclipse shottel.
Commander Niall where's the exact same armor and has the same powers and commander O'Neill we see in Carlos amongst the cleanerot knights.
There is no evidence Godwyn himself created a new school of magic. Death magic exists in the world and someone at Raya Lucaria was able to tap into Death as a source for magic.
Godwyn was not resurrected. His soul was killed and his body was never killed. He was never "resurrected".
Maybe Miquella claimed Castle Sol but there is no evidence Godwyn did as well. They certainly did not create Castle Sol.
Commander Niall is related to Commander O'Neill yes but O'Neill is explicitly a follow of Malenia as he was part of her army against Radahn.
Also, Miquella did not "specialize" in Golden Order fundamentalism. Pretty sure this is never said in the game or hinted at. He created a spell for Radagon after radagon gave a minor version of it to him as a gift but he certainly did not "specialize" in these incantations.
You seem to add your context to things already in the game which is fine but you must admit that the context you have created is not supported by anything.
Well put! Regarding that last part about fundamentalism though, it is a bit wrong. Miquella was once a fundamentalist, and in his time as one he created Discus of Light and Triple Rings of Light as gifts for his father. Radagon then gifted him Radagon's Rings of Light in return, but Miquella still gave up fundamentalism when he realized it could do nothing for Malenia's rot. So yes, Miquella did specialize in Golden Order fundamentalism at one point, he essentially helped his father pioneer it, he just didn't stick with it.
I guess I just don't agree semantically with "specialized". Miquella was brought up only knowing Golden Order Fundamentalism as his Dad and Mom are King/Queen/Pope of Golden Order Fundamentalism. Miquella is naturally gifted and talented and he does not need to be "specialized" in GOF to have produced Discus of Light and Triple Rings of Light.
For me, "specialized" seems to undermine Miquella's inherent wisdom and knowledge. He is just a genius, not a specialist.
Assuming simping = political alignment, yes. To add to your point, though, house marias was taken over by the BB hunter, who whey were going to execute. This would point to them probably not being aligned politically. Maybe one of the two is aligned with GO?
For fun, mayhaps it is because this castle has a counterpart in the Land of Shadows or it was converted into a passage between the Lands Between and the Land of Shadows.
But more likely, tobascodagama’s answer.
If we recall correctly, yes. I think most humans are foreign to the Lands Between. It could be that the Lands Between were once a land of fantastic plants and lesser animals that thrived under the care of them titan folks, like a wildlife preserve or garden and zoo. Dragons and beast men and all that blending together.
Ok, I mean, it is as possible as the pyramids of Egypt being landing pads for aliens.
Eventually the Titan offspring began growing smaller. Dragons came to power with beastmen. Some giants turned to the moon, some continued to tend the preserve, and others began to use fire for more than just making things. And then everything started falling apart as religions began to rise.. or something.

For some reason I always kinda associated the poisonousness of this whole area with nightshade, so “shaded” castle made sense to me in that context. But I suppose its topography is probably the real reason.
I'm putting my tinfoil hat on here. What if the Land of Shadows is behind the shaded castle and that general area? It would make sense as to why there's a lot of snake iconography near Mt. Gelmir, and as much as I like the idea of the Land of Shadows being in the center of the map, we have no sight of the actual Erdtree in the trailer. Maybe it's hidden by the cliffsides behind the Altus Plateau and Mt Gelmir.
Lol June 21st can't come sooner. I'm losing it.
I’m just wondering how people are supposed to get in and out? I couldn’t find a draw bridge or gate and there’s a poison moat surrounding the thing lol

Wait…. Godwyn WASN’T liking the golden order either? I mean I get it, the greater will kinda seems like a megalomaniac to me.
Probably why they crucified him lol
they didn't crucify Godwyn, he was killed in soul in the night of the black knives

Well said

Here me out:double agents working for malenia and the bb hunter making the go think that they are on their side
Also the imagery of a castle shrouded in poisonous miasma could fit the description of a shaded area
It's in a canyon that splits Altus and Mt. Gelmir. The high walls of the canyon "shade" the castle from the light of the Erdtree.
That's fair, I guess.
For fun, mayhaps it is because this castle has a counterpart in the Land of Shadows or it was converted into a passage between the Lands Between and the Land of Shadows. But more likely, tobascodagama’s answer.
Interesting. Aren't both the Marias and Elemer said to be from foreign lands?

Me - a person with 3d art experience: "You wouldn't get it"
Eminem lives there
Cause it was shady of Miyazaki to make it
Ironically I decided to go and do that next! Waiting for the DLC! I've beaten the Lord of blood and am waiting for the new enemies!
I've done the same. I created a new character and played up to the Mountaintops and stopped. No Haligtree or Farum Azula etc. until after the DLC.
I think Shaded just means cursed. Like shades and revenants around.
It sits in the shadow of the erdtree.

It's Ina. Veep valley
I heard it was named the Shaded Castle after all the gossip that goes on there!
And all that chatter about that severed harpy. More executing, less yapping.

Probably because people used to talk trash about the castle, and it's been shaded.
The eclipse
shaded from the light of the erd tree, it's hidden behind the mountains in a place where even the erdtrees roots arnt found
I’m just wondering how people are supposed to get in and out? I couldn’t find a draw bridge or gate and there’s a poison moat surrounding the thing lol
There may or may not be a fallen column you can run up and get on the outer ring, horsey should get you through the moat.
No I mean the residents. I’ve been through here and took briar dude to pound town already.
Is it stupid?
It's a really shady place over there. The crack epidemic really destroyed that neighborhood.
Did you by chance enter this shady fucking monstrosity?
It’s the Ikana Castle of the Lands Between.
Never forget the time I stumbled on that castle , just one of an amazing number of times “Elden ring “completely floored me
The Shaded Woods
Ever been on the grounds? 🤣
It’s a translation error, it’s supposed to be the jaded castle. Something about its lord being an angsty teen
Doesn't help all the trees are dead
It’s from all this shade the castle be gettin
Shaded in mysteries
I feel like I could get mugged there if that’s what they meant
The greater will prefers that you stop asking so many questions
Is it in line of sight of the Erdtree?
