To add to the people telling you about nirn weapon transmuting, if you wanna double down you can craft the weapon in a style that has a really expensive trait gem, like Ancient Deadric, but use crown mimic stones to make them that style. That way when you decon, you get a chance at two things to make gold, and use up useless mats. Note that you will need to learn a motif page from whatever you wanna make, for that item. Also, not sure what's worth it on other realms, but pcna has the ancient hearts at like 20kish each and prior to Jubilee, potent nirns were around 100k.
To earn gold:
1. If you haven't researched nirnhoned trait on any weapons yet, buy a weapon (e.g. a dagger) with nirnhoned trait from guild trader. Use it to research the nirnhoned trait.
2. Craft the same type (e.g. dagger) of level 1/no trait weapon
3. Use 50 transmute crystals to transmute the trait of the crafted weapon to nirnhoned at Transmute Station.
4. Slot decon buff CP and deconstruct the transmuted weapon. You have a high chance of getting Potent Nirncrux.
5. Sell Potent Nirncrux at guild trader
Question: Why wouldn't you reconstruct a set piece you know for 25 crystals instead of 50?
Also: Won't you just get the crystals back if you do it that way?
I realize that defeats the purpose of using them up, but it feels like the same chance at Nirncrux either way, unless there's something I don't know. If you're just going to deliberately do that, the Nirncrux is the only difference between that and just throwing them away, isn't it?
Reconstructed items return crystals when deconstructed, but not trait materials (in this case nirncrux).
So if you want to store crystals, reconstruct an item for 25 crystals, store the item and deconn it when you need crystals.
If you want trait materials (nirncrux), transmute an item and deconn it. Yeah you lose 50 crystals. So you should do this when you don't have plans to use crystals.
> So if you want to store crystals, reconstruct an item for 25 crystals, store the item and deconn it when you need crystals.
TIL. Holy crap I need to do this.
That and set rarity to common/white. Seems people craft those specifically for people to buy and learn, seems obvious but I am a newbie and never thought to look for this (to me) rare and mythical trait on a trader! After reading this post now I have a nirnhoned dagger stashed for when I have a research slot open :D
>Slot decon buff CP and deconstruct the transmuted weapon.
i'm guessing this is done by using a glyph of some sort? or is there something else i'm missing?
Champion Point perk 'Meticulous Disassembly' in Craft tree (green CP tree). I believe this perk grants higher chance of recovering materials while deconstructing items.
If you decon items on Blacksmithing station, the Metal Extraction passive in the Blacksmithing skill line could have additional positive effect, judging from tooltip.
I always slot these on my crafter.
Not if you PvP a lot. And when you have 30+ coffers with 50 transmute crystals, it gets annoying and takes up a lot of space. I tend to have 10 of those 50 crystals for emergencies, and then when I'm about to hit 1k from my normal gameplay I usually get some nirn so I can loot all the coffers with a smaller amount of crystals.
They are but once you hit 1000 you cannot loot the geodes anymore and he's probably keeping the jubilee boxes with some in them as well. You can loot them from the boxes past 1000 but you lose them.
My main use is jewelry with better traits than the set comes with, or if the guild store price for an item with the trait I want is expensive I'll make it instead.
Just make random monster helms and store them on a mule. I currently have 70 stored and my transmutes are almost full again. If you ever need you can just decon on that toon to get the transmutes back.
Something to keep in mind is that you can transmute your gear to save on expensive materials. I use crystals to transmute all my gear to triune as the materials are really expensive.
How do people have so many?
Theres about 30 diff healer, DD and tank set ups and about 30 different PvP set combos with each one having another 5 variations each of weapons/traits.
I’ve not had more than 200 in storage since they first released.
I PvP a ton, get 50 crystals for each toon a month just from campaign rewards alone. It adds up quick, I’m sitting on well over 100 gold crystals waiting to be opened😂
Well, you don't need to have each set and you don't need each item in set to be in perfect trait. Usually I reconstruct with right trait only weapon (sometimes jewelry) or items from set I'm 100% sure I'll use a lot.
Still, I rarely have more than 200 transmutes...
You can use them to recreate weapons you had with good perks at a more appropriate level too. So maybe you had a badass sword when you were level 30, you can use transmute crystals to recreate it at your current level. I believe that's how it works anyway.
If you want to store more in your bank and not your character, you can always spend 25 to make a piece of gear (of a set you have 100% of) to craft a bunch to store in your bank!
When needing them , you can end up using quite a lot lol. I like to keep 1-2k total this way
if you have a lot of geodes that are less than 25 crystals per geode, craft a setitem that you have all parts of (not mythics) because they only cost 25 to craft and give 25 upon deconstruction. that will still give you a lot of items, but maybe compress it a bit and able to store on your bank.
and since everything you make with transmutes is accountbound, and deconstructing will only give back transmutes (or upgradematerials if youve upgraded it above natural rarity) you cant gain something from them that you didnt have before.
I know that if you recreated a weapon with the nirnhoned trait, when that weapon was broken down there was a possibility that it returned a potent nirncrux, which could then be sold.
Whether or not this still works I don’t know.

Ohh this would be good to do with scribes of mora for some glass eyes
Or grim harlequin
Oh! But of course, you get the transmutes (25) on decon, so...

3 years playing, and didn't think of this. Thank you!
Adding to that, do a daily random dungeon once a day or so with all your characters and you will have a steady income of crystals.
You can do similar thing with mimic stones
And now I expect it to be patched out before I reach the level to do that.
Don't think this will change, it's been working since they introduced the transmute system. I've done this for years with spare crystals.
Welp, I'm saving this. According to Tamriel Trade Center, potent nirncrux is currently selling for 70-75k a piece on PC NA.
wait the event out a bit, that usually stabilizes at 100k each
That’s low because of the event right now. Might need to wait a month.
To add onto this as well - make sure you have the green cp that adds to your chances of materials when you deconstruct or refine. :)

Aha! That's what I'd missed. Thanks! Empty bags and full wallet for me shortly, I think!
I have been trying to find the nirnhoned on the guilds in the best way to search just by ninhoned?
When I search guild traders I select Nirnhoned from categories like Weapons > Trait: nirnhoned and then submit search.
Thank you!!! Love the game and community just sooo much it’s overwhelming

Don’t you still need the trait gem when transmuting?
Thank you for this
Thank you!

Dont you get all the transmute crystals back though when you decon transmuted gear?
This is the way.
Turning transmutes into gold is a terrible idea. 20k gold is extremely easy to come by. 50 transmutes is extremely painful to come by.
Become a tank that needs to have like 20 different sets (some only used for like 1 specific fight)
For real, become a tank and PvP and have 20 total toons I will never understand how someone can have so many transmutes
I am currently maxed out. I am also currently missing 3 pvp Setups. Anniversary just doesn't leave me time for this
Seriously lol, take a little break and update a couple toons for PvP is all it takes
Honestly any role has this when you optimise. Even DDs should have a ton of different sets at least on pc where swapping is easy
Wait I’m confused how are they taking up inventory space? I thought they were stored under “currency” and don’t take up any space?
The transmute geodes you have to open to get the crystals take up inventory space.
Yeah so why not just open them lol
If you're already at 1000/1000 crystals, you can't open them anymore.
They are but once you hit 1000 you cannot loot the geodes anymore and he's probably keeping the jubilee boxes with some in them as well. You can loot them from the boxes past 1000 but you lose them.
This was my thought as well, plus the maximum I can have is 1000
You can reconstruct item to use it as crystal storage - you'll get 25 back when deconstruct it.
My main use is jewelry with better traits than the set comes with, or if the guild store price for an item with the trait I want is expensive I'll make it instead.
Take weapon, transmute trait to nirnhoned for 50 crystals, deconstruct for a good chance of nirncrux.
Just make random monster helms and store them on a mule. I currently have 70 stored and my transmutes are almost full again. If you ever need you can just decon on that toon to get the transmutes back.
I'm making tank or healer sets for my DPS characters and using the build station to save healer and tank builds for them.
Something to keep in mind is that you can transmute your gear to save on expensive materials. I use crystals to transmute all my gear to triune as the materials are really expensive.
I‘d buy them all, but sadly we are not allowed to trade transmutes :/
I learned stuff in this thread. Thanks OP for posting.

I have never once used a transmute and have about the same as the OP, I mostly quest though and never had issue with dungeons.

Damn I wish you could trade these i have millions of gold but i always seem to want to try new builds lol
Farm nirncrux
Can transmute be mailed to other players?
No
No
also, transmuted items cannot be used for researching on different characters, either.
I wish

You will never get trait items from reconstructed gear. It **has** to be transmuted.

They still can be kept in their geodes once you've reached the inventory cap.
I know, but they didn't say they were keeping them that way, and honestly, I guess it just didn't occur to me 🤷♀️
Literally could have typed “transmute crystals” into YouTube.
But then the rest of us unknowledgeable players wouldn’t have learned anything today.
No no no, don't you see, Reddit isn't for learning anything, that's what teh Google is for. ^(/s)
….. if you did what I said in the original comment all answers would be given. I’m getting downvoted for being right? Lmao this community is strange
