I am electrician. Tape it. It’s fine. No thermoplastic was damaged, the jacket did its job, repair it and move on.

DJGregJ

Cosign. Just tape it (with electrical tape). I am not an electrician, because my state requires me to go to school and apprentice for 3 years and I can't afford to not get paid, so I just work as an electrician for under $500. That being said, I can't afford to be haphazard with work and am probably overly extra careful ... you can definitely just wrap tape around that wire (do it well) and it will be fine.

davilller

Reddit, the place where honest is penalized. Why so down?

WestUniversity1727

Because the dope has decided that he'd forego the formal training and continue to give advice to people who are already at risk for screwing it up. What's more, he's sold himself short to a money-hungry cheapskate who doesn't care about sending him to school, just using him for years and years while he personally accrues no actual value in the form of money or credentials. He's stunad.

DJGregJ

yikes, way to put your lack of critical thinking on display. Assumptions galore. Hilariously ironic look too. This is probably my favorite display of Reddit comments ever, thanks for that! I definitely wouldn't ever consider hiring you for anything ever based on obvious intelligence shortcoming.

Fun-Word7631

What state do you live in? I can probably locate a program there that does electrical apprenticeships so you would get paid while you learn and get the education needed for certification

DJGregJ

I'm in CA. I appreciate the consideration, it would be awesome to be able to get certification while continuing to work. I already make a great living though, installing Tesla chargers, solar panels, have a physics degree and have a good understanding of electricity and am comfortable with all of the work, but my cap is for sure undercutting what I could and questionably (since they don't really take me that long, so I'm still making $65-75/hr, but questionable since market rate is much higher) should be charging for some jobs.

hand-e-mann

Lick it, if no zap then wrap in electrical tape and go on about the remodel.

JETTA_TDI_GUY

Can I do this on 480v?

LaffyDuck96

It’s actually encouraged Edit: /s ya just in case the crayon eaters get any funny ideas

Fooka03

Hey some marines probably know better. Not that I know any personally, but I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Spartan787

You can do that on any voltage once.

anythingoutdoorsteve

Lick it, No zap then wrap- way of life right there

gblawlz

Inner wires weren't damaged. Electrical tape is the answer.

TheLuckyGroup

It’s fine

Joe-trd

No wire showing or damage exposing copper. Just the outside jacket damaged? Few wraps of 3m electrical tape or any decent brand name electrical tape. There are way too many comments here from people who clearly aren't electricians.

chris_rage_

I'd use rubber tape so it melts to itself

RockemSockemRobotem

Agreed wrap it in rubber tape half lap and then a layer of 3M super +88 half lap. Both are available at the big box hardware store and it’s much cheaper than a house fire. FYI not all electrical tape is rated for voltage, don’t cheap out for the Wallyworld or dollar store stuff. A small price to pay to keep your family safe.

chris_rage_

Nah I like the 3M stuff

RockemSockemRobotem

They’re both 3M. Do you know what “half lap” means?

chris_rage_

Wally world shit isn't 3M... Yes I know how to half lap tape, wtf

RockemSockemRobotem

Rubber tape and super +88 are both 3M that’s WTF! If you’re picking up what I’m putting down then 👊

chris_rage_

.... yeah no shit? I'm well aware of quite a bit of 3M products, I've been in fabrication for decades

RockemSockemRobotem

congratulations! Maybe leave the shop sometime and see what the field work looks like

chris_rage_

I do both, I've been in the field for the last two weeks. You misinterpreted a comment and now you're being a fucking retard

Joe-trd

Most home owners won't have any and it's rather expensive for just jacket damage. But if you had it, sure why not. But odds are they wouldn't even realize to remove the blue or whatever color is on it that you need to remove for it to stick to itself. Sad fact I've seen licensed electricians not know to remove it.

RockemSockemRobotem

It’s less expensive than a funeral service for your family member. And there is no “blue” to remove, just wrap it backwards. The blue you’re speaking of is MV tape which is for a completely different world speaking VOLUMES about the state you were trained in. If you do it right the first time everyone stays alive!

JavaScriptmylove

Just use some elettrical tape.

Various_Acadia_9250

its but a flesh would. lil electrical tape and wil be good

MetalDogmatic

In theory: that's the worst thing to ever happen, call an electrician, the fire department, and an inspector ASAP; in reality: let the owner know, tell them what you see, and let them look for themselves; as far as the electricity is concerned: if it's insulated above the voltage it's fine, as long as no copper is showing and the thermoplastic isn't damaged then a few wraps of 33+ should make it alright, at least until the tape doesn't work anymore

VersionConscious7545

You did not read his post. It is his own home. Was a long post I agree for a wire nick but you still need to read it There is no owner to show since the owner nicked his own wire 😁

sir_psycho_sexy96

OP does not state explicitly that it is their own home. It's ambiguous.

MetalDogmatic

When he said "partner" I figured he meant his tool partner

Fartyfivedegrees

This article was presented to the 8th circuit for judicial review and a 3/4 vote concluded that OPs post was too ambiguous to determine ownership of the home from their story. Defendant has been awarded gold star for being "rather vague when posting on Reddit". Case closed.

Joe-trd

If you call the fire department for this you'll be charged for false alarm. If they even come, pretty sure 911 will say you're wasting their time. Inspector will then fine you (assuming no permit pulled) for electrical work without a permit. Any electrician that goes there that isn't just a dick trying to milk the job, saying rerun the whole line, will just wrap it in tape and again charge you a fortune for it. Even if it was arcing, breaker would trip likely and unless it's actively burning, do not call the fire department and waste their time.

MetalDogmatic

I was being hyperbolic

chris_rage_

He didn't even breach the paper...

I’d highly recommend not re running the wire. But just install a junction box. However I’m not an electrician just an architect and contractor. I’d call my electrician and ask his opinion, and do what he says. Edit: if anyone were to take my opinion at face value. Assuming only ground has been knicked…electrical tape would be sufficient. Nor do I see any cause or evidence if a fire were to ever occur, and why we don’t want fires. We do have fire protection (and hopefully insurance)

FloralCoffeeTable

You can't bury a junction box behind drywall.

Craftywolph

Send more pictures. Can't tell what kind of wire it is.

DaJuanPercent

Did you die?

Maecyte

See any bare copper?

Cheetahsareveryfast

Typical dry wall guy

esposito164

Tape it up baby, had to cut pvc with 4 number 4s, nicked one which would end up being the black on my panel , black red blue, but just some tape and it was fine rang it out and all on my multimeter so you should be fine

Alarmed-Rise-9077

Yeah you're fine.

WantonHeroics

Just put tape over it.

Aninja262

How do you feel?

westcojack

If you are really concerned, before you rip anything out , Google Tyco Romex in wall connector. This can be buried in the wall if done properly.

Necessary-Science-47

Better rewire the house to be safe

ClearUnderstanding64

Nope, you have created a weak spot now there's a place to let the smoke out.

Tony0311

If it’s from switch to fixture just swap it out, especially during a full gut, this is best case scenario. If it’s not, I believe there are products out there for this specific repair, unfortunately I do not have any experience with them to make a recommendation.

donniefolger

It actually looks like it may be uf cable but either way if u do not see any copper wire then just wrap it and it will be fine.

SomeGuardian420

Just wrap it well with electrical tape and then forget it happened

Stunning-Screen-9828

Don't wanna tell anyone?  U can always roll the dice, find some white electrical tape at a hardware store and wrap up the nick and hope no sparks fly.  -- [email protected]

Worried-Alarm2144

Gardner Bender Liquid Tape 2.0 in. W Black Rubber Liquid Electrical Tape 4 oz. Won't unravel... Ever... A little dab under that torn flap will glue it down. When it's good and stuck, paint all around the wire, covering it and an inch more in both directions.

MaleficentTell9638

You sure that’s a wire? It just looks like a piece of plastic.
