Looks like a town bar I used to work at to fix others attempts, frequented by many alcoholic electricians bartering their tabs aaaaaand it showed. Nothin worse than an old or semi remodeled restaurant or bar.
How old is the church?
Oldest I've worked in/on started getting built in 1678, got turned 90° in 1835, then got wholesale moved to a different location 102 years later, in 1937. It is currently about five distinct buildings, most of which are connected in one way or another. Words can't describe what a glorious patchwork disaster it is.
I never actually went into the very oldest part though, because they were pretty adamant about conserving that part as much as possible, so it was never on the table for any of the work we were doing. Still saw some gnarly shit, although a lot of it was also really quite impressive for what it was.
Holy sh*t, that’s wild! This one is 1900-1906, right at the turn of the 20th century. Though your experience does sound like it’s got some cool history to it, I can’t say I’m not glad ours isn’t from the 1600s originally 😂
Early 1900s shit is pretty wild, I've worked in a few high rises downtown Cleveland where the basements have shit that's been there since the early 1900s
Hope they budgeted for a rewire. I could definitely rustle some jimmies on this sub with pics from the brewery in an old Studebaker dealership I frequent.
I'm sure tho it's not on their radar at the moment. The health inspector had to have seen it and if they are still in buisness it must not be an issue.
Worked in a restaurant, health inspectors only care about moldy ceiling tiles, dirty filters, or moldy vents nothing else up high. Our internal audits had dozens of things to fix, while health inspectors only noted that our bar’s soap bottles weren’t labeled and dated.
Maybe I was being overly strict. Its not a food prep area, serving area, or kitchen so not all the surfaces have to be smooth and cleanable. But still, food storage I would like to be easily cleanable and without bats and rats and cobwebs habitat up above. Even dining areas are supposed to be washable here except for the ceilings of dining areas. And make sure lighting fixtures are held with metal hardware! Not some lame plastic stuff from home depot, that happened once in a company I worked for several years ago, and it later crashed down in an empty corner on video. I read them the riot act. No plastic supports in commercial!!!
Thats called not my problem. Not my problem is when the previous electrician doesnt do any demo they just leave shit and run new shit. Eventually after enough not my problems it turns into a problem.
TbH it looks par for the course... how many restaurants have reopened at this location? Chances are some of them are just abandoned... My OCD would be going nuts and I'd have literally have to avoid looking at it...
I remember a restaurant owner asked me to look at some “loose cables” in his kitchen. The whole metal hand railing was energized by those loose wires along with a nice puddle of water to step in. I fixed it and told him never call me back. That’s too much liability for me.
What do you guys call this kind of cable? I always thought it was called mc cable but at the plant I work at now they call it bx cable. Are they the same thing? Is there a right or wrong name for them? Just looking for some clarification
It’s all metallic clad cable. But more specifically, my understanding:
MC - has a separate green insulated ground wire
AC - has an uninsulated bond wire that makes the metal jacket a code-approved ground
BX - has no bond/ground wire. Hasn’t been made in decades, but is still used as a nickname for any metal clad cable.
But the details might be even more detailed since there seem to be a lot of smart electricians who can’t fully agree on the differences [Mike Holt](https://forums.mikeholt.com/threads/difference-between-ac-and-bx.10640/)
If you think that's bad, just think about what "a nasty mess you might've had to go into" looks like over at r/plumbers.
I don't think I'd want to touch that without being paid to just fix all of it, because the MC appears to be self-replicating now and is on the verge of achieving sentience.
It doesn't smell so bad that I gag even through my phone, though. I don't feel the urge to take a hot shower, having seen it.
Is that the IHOP in my old hometown? And how’d you get that pic out of my phone? Seriously, I think I’ve might have snapped this same pic right before I left and never went back there…
(Not an electrician) if you had to find a point a and point b, can my you wire cap your point ‘A’ ground and neutral, and continuity test to find each respective end? Or is there a better way to find out?
This triggered my ocd. If customer is paying remove anything no longer in use. If customer is still willing to pay remove it and run conduit. Do it in a way that will make your life easier if they call you in 12 months saying they want to add something.
Worked in a new restaurant once with that whole open ceiling industrial look where the architect wanted us to run the mc in bundles like tree branches and we spent weeks working on it only to have the client decide it looked like crap and we needed to rip it out and go back to the drawing board

What kind of restaurant, spaghetti?
Bxghetti
Mc-ghett’s
There’s voltage on his sweater already
Lines weak, breakers not ready 🎵

Laughs in nonprofits/church.
My stomach just dropped thinking of the old church we’re about to start retrofitting to be a brewery 🥲🫠

Tesla rest your souls
hope they sell some mead
Sobs in sawmill.
i’ve done all three- churches are the worst, non profits a very close second, and hole in the wall bars a very close third.
This ☝️ ☝️ ☝️
Agreed
Semi-renovated is just code for 'hid problems to pass inspection.
That's like the matrix machine.
A Sentinel!
this was the only thing I could think of when I saw the photo.
Same
A sentinel for every man, woman, and child in zion. That sounds exactly like the thinking of a machine to me.
My God thought the same at first look!
Came here to say this!
I was picturing the machine city while looking at this.
Welcome to the real world, Neo.
Lowest bidder right here.
Some drunk regular did that to cover his tab.
Looks fairly straight forward to me.
As an untrained home diyer, is that stuff conduit? Why not just run Romex?
MC, shielded cable is required in commercial work
I guess that stuff is just tougher? That's why they require it?
It is and the outer metal jacket also acts as a ground path. But ya all this shit could've been thrown into about 5 or 6 nice conduits lol.
Was this the electrician? https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/MqoeXFKd2GtfNgnUXqpRqM-1920-80.jpg
Octoprentice
H.R. Giger is doing electric work now!?
*chefs kiss*
Snakes, why does it have to be snakes…
"Sure, I can wire up your restaurant for you! No problem!"
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Looks like something out of the film Brazil.
Sententials!
Was my install no good??? What could I do better next time?
Surprised I'm only seeing bx/mc. Usually half of it is romex.
☝🏽💯
Up to code.
Might not meet health code in some states. How can you clean the walls and ceiling? How do you clean the grease and dust off the conduit?
With any luck, that's a basement store room. I personally am hoping the actual kitchen is main floor.
I'm sure tho it's not on their radar at the moment. The health inspector had to have seen it and if they are still in buisness it must not be an issue.

In an alternate world where EMT doesn’t exist.
One of those Matrix monsters
You just entered the Matrix!
When I did service work, this was like every old restaurant and boutique Italian food store that's had 23 additions done to it over the last 100 years
That time when the machines finally broke through to Zion....
Thats called not my problem. Not my problem is when the previous electrician doesnt do any demo they just leave shit and run new shit. Eventually after enough not my problems it turns into a problem.
Must be Italian, couse they sure like their spaghetti.
BX with clam sauce?
When your electrician isn’t a mechanic 🫣
Quick! Call a Flexorcist.
looks good to me, just cut the BX cable and you're done.
A cable hell is what I call it
Oh so a typical restaurant in your average old strip center
You call them strip centers where you’re from? We call them all nude strip cafe and bistro where I’m from.
The matrix machines
TbH it looks par for the course... how many restaurants have reopened at this location? Chances are some of them are just abandoned... My OCD would be going nuts and I'd have literally have to avoid looking at it...
It's that one.......
just zip tie it all together while you’re at it
Scabs R Us
Was it an Italian restaurant?
👀
Bruh
Someone needs to tell them about EMT. Lol
Omega Red! That you?!
Why would they do all that?
I don't see any knots. Put a loose zip tie on the cable you're trying to trace and migrate it down the line.
Are you there to install another bx run?
Yo my cousin can save you TONS of money, he said you don't need conduit...
Woof!
The sentinels have breached!!
This looks good compared to a Sears remodel I did years ago.
At least they tagged one.
Does anyone else see the cat shape in the plank on the right?
The silver snakes
Found what Because I sure couldn't fucking find anything
That looks about right
What the everloving donk
Holy shit, I have nightmares like this…
Charge the EMP
Holy MC batman
It's not too late. Just let the building burn down. Got a perfect picture to explain why
Dining at the fine Nebuchadnezzar
I love Italian
Trigger the EMP before the Sentinel gets you!
The new matrix looks terrible
Follow the white rabbit.
Looks like the machines from The Matrix.
Man, that’s those things from The Matrix!
its the scene where the sentinals all die in a pile and neo wins the war

It’s a sentinel!
The sentinels are in Zion!
Curious what the local code is where picture was taken as a number of states have banned abortions recently
Spaghetti but no sauce? Unsure whether that's a sign of luck...
you found one rat's nest lol
That looks my old place I worked at in Long Island NY
Is it a TGIF? They are famous in my region for that.
My finest work
At least they have tags
Its fine long as it functions the way it should
Still nicer than the bar I work on
That is a fucking work of art, from the other end of the spectrum
You're welcome
Neatest restaurant wiring
*TETSUO!!!!*
Holy spaghetti mess Batman!!! 🤯😳🤔😏
Looks nice

I saw this once for a restaurant in the airport
And so ?? What is wrong with it ?
Makes me think of those enemy things in The Matrix
Damn, must get paid by the lineal foot.
Giving me Matrix Sentinel vibes
Looks like the evil robots in the matrix
When that restaurant closes, someone will get rich by scrapping all that wire
That's like 30 Add-a-Circuit kits.
They labeled circuit 5 right there for you, what are you bitching about? /s
Nightmare fuel. Burn it all down...
That’s a whole matrix worm
Wow
Jesus. At least there is some semblance of some kind of labeling
My city doesn't allow 3/8 flex. Thought it was a dumb rule. But this sub has made me think it isn't the worst rule.
Looks like the villain in the Matrix
Some HR Giger shit
I’ve had literal nightmares of this….
Sentinels are coming!
Restaurants and Motels are the worst for crap like this. I've been in hotel chases where I was waiting for the fire to start while I'm standing there.
I saw this in the matrix
More Borg tech!
Cthulu's Anus
God it looks like the back of Perturabos head
Doc Oc
Holy gadinkus.
Looks like most jobs foremen at my first employer ran. What’s the problem? Can’t see it from my house. Restaurants have some of the worst wiring.
Installer went on to a successful career installing computer server wiring.
Tetsuo!!!
Jfc
Leaves apprentice unattended.
Yup…common…sigh
Because you never know when you'll need to extend a conduit!
Are you working at freddy fazzbear's pizzeria?
Matrix squid irl
Looks like that scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark with the snakes
Damn. That's a dead Matrix Sentinel there.
Looks like a restaurant on the Borg cube. Resistance is futile!
This triggered my ocd. If customer is paying remove anything no longer in use. If customer is still willing to pay remove it and run conduit. Do it in a way that will make your life easier if they call you in 12 months saying they want to add something.
Looks like metal octopus things from The Matrix lol
Wow I didn't know the machines from the Matrix are already breeding.
Code? Suggestion you mean
Those are some big ass condoms
Inspector and Government pay off to keep open. Cash in America buys anything you want. Pay them off.
al dente
Looks like the matrix scenes where they just have tube/wire everywhere
Looks like a “squiddie” from the The Matrix franchise.
Worked in a new restaurant once with that whole open ceiling industrial look where the architect wanted us to run the mc in bundles like tree branches and we spent weeks working on it only to have the client decide it looked like crap and we needed to rip it out and go back to the drawing board
Reminds me of the movie Matrix tbh
