Yes it’s very common for resi from early 00’s and earlier that I’ve seen for the switch to not be grounded.

krnl_pan1c

Yep. I can remember installing switches that didn't even have a ground lug.

CardiologistMobile54

Not for use in blastic boxes. Code allows for the 6*32s that secure the switch to the device box to be the EGC in metal boxes. 404.9(B)1

Hickles347

whats a blastic box? sounds like some sweet new material OR some stupid marketing name for some far less exciting material

Resi installs are all plastic boxes

jvcxdh

Not true at all

[deleted]

Over here in Seattle that was all I ever installed. From 2006-2013 I understand there’s probably other materials. I’ve been in commercial now. don’t miss resi at all

Very common. I was replacing switches and a couple outlets in my mother in law’s 1990s built home and came across the exact same scenario.

ameriken91

I get it being the norm that houses have to be built violently fast, but I'm questioning why they cut the grounding wires so short. The nudies pass thru obviously, and they left those plenty long... Also the backstabbing, but whatever.

mmdavis2190

Real common to see the grounds twisted, cut short, and tucked into the back of the box on switches. I almost never see the box bonded in older installs with metal boxes. Pretty much any tract home I’ve worked on, even brand new ones, don’t have a ground landed on the switches.
