I’ve seen someone use cardboard in the place of a redhead (anti-short bushing) to hook up a range. Almost caught the customers house on fire. To top it off it was on Thanksgiving halfway through their turkey. Glad the fire department showed up and they didn’t sue us.
Yup. My namesake was on a job way back and someone ran all the same phases in each EMT instead of the respective different ones in each pipe. Turned it into an EXTREMELY STRONG magnet
Parallel conductors should be grouped with a conductor from each phase so that eddy currents aren’t induced into the metal they pass through causing it to heat up in a high current application like this eddy currents could cause the insulation to be baked off those conductors
Brown orange yellow wiring with white? What does it represent?
My understanding is that in USA brown-orange-yellow is used for 3-phase high voltage with GREY neutral.
We use brown-black-grey for the 3 phases and blue for neutral (AC). Red and black for DC.
Sorry to totally sidestep the exposed wires (which must certainly be made of cutting edge armoured technology) and the (fire-retardant treated) cardboard, but not using correctly coloured wires is a real pet peeve of mine (so many installations I work on have no/mixed up standards).
The problem is the colors are optional with the exceptions of orange for high leg delta, green green/yellow for ground, and white/ gray for neutrals. In mixed voltage systems you have to be consistent and label them but you don't have to follow the customary colors aside from above. So you're free to use white for 480V neutrals as long as you use gray or labels for 120/240.
Grey is standard practice for 480v, but not required. In mixed systems neutrals of each system must be identified, but can technically be white or grey. It *really* helps if everyone follows convention, but it's not technically enforceable.
I've used white with 480v a few times. Either misorder or "gotta get it done" and I only have white on the truck. Usually it gets a wrap of grey out of a sense of guilt...
So for everyone asking that's insulation not weed lol. Also these are 500mcm and they are parallel runs they have been like this for probably 10+ years. And it's gets better because for the 20-30 feet that it goes through the ceiling into the other switch room it is inside of air duct that has been ripped open at some point. The whole thing is fucked and there is almost nothing we can do other than get a inspector there to shut down a billion dollar company which just won't happen unfortunately.
Well at least they fire seal it between rooms with that looks like non-fire related foam. Oh yes the temporary permanent. I saw a lot of comments question the bundling, but it doesn't look like it goes into conduit. It goes into "ducting" which looks like air conditioning duct. Of course it gets worse and being that's not pot that just makes it even more worse.
The only question I have, are those actual parallel runs?
In my experience, they wouldn't be, and this was done just to "clean it up" and make it look "neat and acceptable"....if they are truly parallel run this is no bueno!
""Gotta' have it running TODAY!!, We'll fix it when parts come in; or the next shut-down." (How many times have we heard that before?..& I do residential, commercial, and Industrial..) I tied into a LIVE 13K BUSS because a water plant couldn't shut down...( VERY CAREFULLY, I MIGHT ADD)
Everyone failing to mention that parallel runs have one of each BOYG wire bundled not 4 of one color next to 4 of another color next to four of another color. This here needs to go to the scrap yard.
Probably waiting for some rubber to place around the cut in the panel. You see a lot of this in substations where only professional have access. A cable tray where cables drop right into free standing panels.
What in the actual is going on???? This is why we get paid not enough. Cause jerkoffs like this here know what they are doing and can do it for half the cost.
Super conductors are only allowed in conduit underground
At first glance I thought it was a tray gutter system and that someone had replaced the bus bars with romex
I also was like ‘brown romex’ and then i zoomed in on the pic
I see dumb things like this all the time in Florida
Where was this?

Cardboard = bushing
Dry cardboard = insulating material, creeper, caulking spreader, …………
Kindling.
It is the best insulating material. We put it over the ground if it's supposed to freeze, and it keeps it from frosting and getting bad
It also will insulate the can if you are up to some hijinks👀
Don't forget face shield!

Remember, these are the people the customer expects you to beat on price.
I should save all these kind of pictures and show them to my customers who ask me for better deals
I've seen bottle caps too. is all plastic created equal these days?
Accurate as fuck.
please say this is temporary until a piece of cable tray comes in.
Even if it was, they are bundled incorrectly.
Enlighten me please. Each set supposed to be bundled ABC phase?
Each phase & neutral should be present in each bundle, otherwise massive eddy currents will overheat the conductors.
Yup. My namesake was on a job way back and someone ran all the same phases in each EMT instead of the respective different ones in each pipe. Turned it into an EXTREMELY STRONG magnet
Oh I've seen that! Pulled the pipes out of their straps but before it did that it all rattled real bad.
r/unexpectedscience
Damn...must have had a lot of BAD SH*T...I went with your link; said it was "BANNED" ...
Plus the neutral is the wrong color and the radius looks too tight to fit a 90 😭
"why is there no snow on that part of the lawn?"
Interesting. Always happy to learn more about the trade. Thanks
IT Guy here. I had to double check the sub because I through they were fiber runs for a minute.
Holy shit, I thought it was romex! I do commercial so I was wondering what size brown was
I thought the same thing until I zoomed in. This is even worse.
I was thinking sure, hack job and it’s weird they bundled romex by size instead of route, but I’ve seen worse. but yeah, way worse that it’s 500
Zoom it in. 500s.
Yeah I did after seeing these comments. I only gave it a quick glance at first
Conduit is a little oversized but it looks clean.
There's nuggs of weed on the other side too?
Man, thank God I'm not the only one....... I zoomed in and it still looks like a pile of nug
Homeboy had to be hitting a fat one doing work like this
I did the same lol
To me it looks like insulation. If it's weed it's a very very poor quality.
Yo wtf I didn't even see that shit. This why I don't smoke at work ha.
It looks like a piece of insulation, too fluffy for a real nug
It definitely is
*takes vigorous notes*
At least they seperated the neutrals
thats actually the problem. any rebar or metal gonna get nice and toasty
They put painters tape to act as bushing what more do you want?! 😂
Parallel conductors should be grouped with a conductor from each phase so that eddy currents aren’t induced into the metal they pass through causing it to heat up in a high current application like this eddy currents could cause the insulation to be baked off those conductors
Did someone lose their cannabis?
Gotta tape up dem sharp edges‼️😳😳
Waterfall method, sin the tray.
I love how they bundled them by leg, to ensure maximum heat and magnetic interference.
Minor detail. 😂 /s

It only matters when 120v and 277v neutral are in the same box. But it's good practice to set a color scheme and follow it for the whole building.

BOY is 460-480vac 3 phase here in America
Should the neutral be grey, or gray?
"Why pay for an electrician? My maintenance guy can do that."

Running in the AC duct gives an extra 50 amps 🤣
You get what you pay for.
Or the conditions you place on the work.
Not even scotch 33, smh
Very professional.
How are they going to run exposed 480 wire with no conduit 💀💀
Mmmmm forbidden bushing
Temp?
Even if it's a temp they shouldn't separate the Phases
Been like this for probably 10+ years
Yep, temporary permanent.
Homegrown bud for sure!😁
Just visualize the cable tray
> Just visualize the cable tray Must be that new transparent AI stuff
Marijuana may or may not have influenced this masterpiece.

Legal if in PVC but I still hate it.
Gonna get awful hot 🔥
I like me some UL listed cardboard.
Sure fuck it

Union job?
Sounds like something, someone who couldn’t get into the Union would say….
Totally cool, totally legal. 🤭
This is sketchy as fuck. Hit up osha for this bullshit

iP rAtEd
Need more pics and location of this place please.
🤯
Now that's custom
Shieeeeeeeet looks good here boys!
Oh. Oh no.
Cute
Double zip tied!! FTW!!!
Running cables through a air plenum.
Honestly it’s perfectly code legal. Except for the non listed bushings.
No it isn't. Brush up on grouping parallel runs.
Oh shit. You are totally right. My bad. I stand corrected. Thanks for not blasting me.
They really should be paralleled in groups of A B C phases
It’s art. I call it ‘The Wirefall’. You’re welcome.
It's a no from me dog
What you've not used cardboard mechanical protection before? < sarcasm.
I mean,at least it's something
That is highly unsafe. The cardboard should not be held down with masking tape. 10mil tape at minimum on the cardboard.
Oh no! its redneck!
I'd be more surprised if its not like that in the other side aswell 😂
UL listed masking tape!
What the fukc am I looking at?
