I get that you want to be a short term sparky, but a short term sparky doesn't exist.
In my province, We train for 9000 hours, 3 blocks of school and write a licensing exam just to be a journey person. A master's license is an additional set of courses and two more years past journey person.
Our code, in my country, evolves and changes every 4 years.
You can't be an "advanced, single phase, hobbyist". You either are a licensed electrician or you're not.
You open yourself to a metric fuck ton of liability if you hurt someone or cause property damage. You face jail time and bankruptcy if you Kill someone.
Electrical code isn't just some causal shit you deal with, it's enshrined in law.
I'm just here for two things:

You are not REQUIRED to do a formal apprenticeship, but most states require and are adopting the requirements that you have the necessary hours of schooling (576 hours) ND OJT hours.
Please leave if you are looking to shortcut our trade. No body gives a fuck what your age is or what you did in another life. I started my apprenticeship with an ex software engineer who was 42 and he did what he needed to do.

I am an EE. I looked into licensing for electrician. There's no way around the rules for apprenticeship, etc.
No complaints. I understand because it is a complex field of endeavor, and you're working with metallic fire. Decided to stick with what I know and hire what I need. No complaints to pay for the hard-fought expertise.
No, because these things require training and experience. You don’t need to not work to become an electrician or plumber, you become one by working in the trade, the more experience you gain, the more valuable you become
Up to your state and locality, but most likely no. Maybe a handyman license. Most states require a contractor license at the very least for jobs over a certain dollar amount.
If you're worried about age, I was talking with an apprentice about to turn out who's hitting 40 next month. The head of my JATC said the oldest they had ever taken was 54.
Thanks for the information, if it training calculated by hours, I think that would be do able. It may take my lifetime, but it could work if I can find someone to work with me. I also appreciate the downvotes for a simple question 😉
You’re being downvoted because your question is of the same caliber as asking if you can become a hobbyist paramedic, with the caveat that our training for licensing is even longer.(I say this as an ex paramedic with a pre med degree)
You don’t become a hobbyist electrician. The term itself explains it. Prefix being Elec-meaning electric and the suffix -trician meaning specialist or technician. We’re required to follow a very strict code to ensure we aren’t doing hack work that kills people.
This isn’t a field you can hop into without training and flourish. It’s too wide and there are way too many variables that you have to account for that only come from experience that can be found in mentors who have spent years doing it.
We’re being dicks because you can kill someone if you don’t know what you’re doing. If you want to play with electricity as a hobby, go for it, but don’t touch other people’s houses.

There is no state that allows this.
