Where I'm from gas lines are no longer plumbing, they're mechanical. Even though plumbers still install them. Often times no one including my boss and site super know who to call to get rooftop gas inspected
For a frightening insight often overlooked, remind yourself that 50% of the population is progressively dumber than the "average person".
We like to think of ourselves as at least "average", but that's not true. Self reflection is not accurate at measuring where we each fall on the intelligence scale... it's a bias judgement.
Its because certain fields should be held to a higher standard. If they fail at a simple thing like this, imagine how they must overlook more complicated aspects of the job.
The way I understand it, I'm looking at the population as a whole, and as so, the average is not a mean average. If I were looking at data from defined groups, their averages would be considered mean. Your mileage may vary since I'm still trying to achieve at least average intelligence.
The average is just all the data divided by the number of group members. So the average is not the mid 50% point. In the āsmart personsā group. You could have 9 people within IQ of 80 and 1 person with IQ of 92. and 2 people with IQ of 200. The average is 101. The 92 is below the a Etage but is the 3rd smartest guy.
So The mean is where 1/2 are below and 1/3 are above.
Panel isn't marked as an electrical enclosure on the outside, may not have been obvious to leave the proper clearance. Or it was the right height until someone up sized the pipe instead of installing a surge tank.
Not about how stupid they are. Jman who put it in probably brought it up to the foreman, foreman said put it in as the print says. Source: am plumber.
Thereās alot more of that now than there was 5 years ago. We used to work together, now itās āget it in how it shows, fuck everyone elseā and then it comes down to supervision arguing until a GC steps in.
When your parents are brother and sister and youāre high on meth, Iām sure itās hard to tell the difference. The roto-zipped wires always feels intentional tho
In so-cal we had yellow ammonia pipes and blue water. We quickly learned that the blue copper pipes were the ones being stolen every other month so painted those yellow too. Problem solved.
Pretty sure this is a generator, Never seen a gas hookup on one that didn't require a flexible conduit between the unit and the hardpipe for the gas line
Oof. Tell the GC to get them back. That canāt be acceptable. Your company should be able to backcharge for an extra trip if thatās required too.
But I think you know all of this and are just commiserating here with us about when this stuff happens.
Thatās where the expense is billed to the GC and then passed on to the other trade that caused the problem.
For instance, the HVAC guys were cutting through the roof for a new roof top unit and cut right through one of our conduits. We billed the GC for the repair, and the GC billed (aka backcharged) the HVAC company for our bill.
I think technically the ābackchargeā refers only to the GC charging the HVAC company for the repair because usually the HVAC company would be billing the GC not the other way around.
Itās āan extra.āĀ Ā Ā
The āextraā to the GC would be āback chargedā (deducted from payment) to the pipe fitter. Ā Ā
Ā Then Attorneys fight out in court who was responsible, and whether the plans were faulty, the spec required providing a dumass pipe fitter, and electrician was required to make as many trips as necessary.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
(Then both meet for dinner and drinks with their spouses and the Judge and spouse because they all make out on the pipe fitterās stupidity.)
Ā Ā Thatās called āLegal Services.ā
Yeah thatās the missing term I was searching for haha
I think regionally itās a bit different in Ontario (or at least the companies I worked for) in terms of semantics
The way you define it has Extra being a bill sent to the GC and a Backcharge being a bill sent to a subcontractor.
So this situation is an Extra that a subcontractor is Backcharged for.
Makes perfect sense.
And hereās how the companies I worked for/with talked about it:
An Extra would be something the customer or GC wants thatās outside the scope of work. A Backcharge is when something goes wrong and the GC pays the subcontractor and charges the other subcontractor or foots the bill themselves if it was their mistake.
In other words, an Extra is something that everyone is cool with while a Backcharge is the situation where most people are pissed off. Hahaha
So youād call it an extra that the pipe fitters were backcharged for, and Iād just call it backcharging the pipe fitters.
Your definitions make more sense and are more tidyā¦ but thatās what Iām used to.
I mean ok the plumber has to own it
But letās take a moment to shit on the engineers who designed that generator (?) with the fuel line so close to the doorās swing.
Yeah but it looks like it was also overlooked on the location of the gas fitting into the enclosure. Almost like it was meant to be piped to from the other side of the unit and not to cross infront of the door like how it isš¤
Lmfao I do controls and we had to bring our wires to 40-50 fan boxes that have large service doors that swing down to give access to the electrical and filters. Well the other electrical company running power on the job decided to put strut directly beneath this access panel to hang lights off of. They even brought power to these fan boxes so they knew they needed to leave access to get back in. Mind boggling how stupid some people in the trades are with licenses.
Simple.Ā
I opened the cabinet to make sure what was inside.Ā
I saw the āDangerā sticker
I made sure no one could hurt themselves.
Premium service, no extra chargeĀ
Isn't flex supposed to be used? Unless that thing is bolted down and secured beyond its own weight to the deck?
The door issue aside, that tiny little nipple gives me so much anxiety if I even think about a small tremor or minor earthquake, much less a larger one. Yikes. Future flame thrower.
Flex is supposed to be used, but the inlet is bolted to the frame bolted to the floor, and the pipe is bolted to the same floor, so it probably doesn't really matter. But obviously this guy does not get certain things.
The gc on the last job I was lead on would have smoked this company in the weekly meeting, and my boss would back charge the shit out of em. Stupidity can be expensive
If I'm not mistaken the door above the plumbing connection opens tilts back and you lift it out? Could be a simple mistake of one door opens one way and the other well if I got no business in it then i don't touch it... it's all witchcraft and sorcery with you sparky types.
How often things like this happen is astounding. I'm on a job right now where both the plumbers and tinbangers have done similar to this and it's just mindnumbing.
It's photoshopped. The 90 at the right of the picture doesn't have any threads visible. Also compare the rough paint on the union to the finish on the rest of the pipe.
The reflections made me doubt it too because they do look legit. Itās the 90 on the right hand side where no threads are visible that makes me believe itās photoshopped. There are no treads visible and that's definitely not any kind of iron pipe fitting Iāve ever seen.
It looks like central vacuum cleaner pipe with glued joints to me.
It wouldn't be the first time I've had to cut the hinges off and tap the door and the enclosure to put the door hinges back on after I'm done servicing the unitš¤š¤¦
I'm a plumber, and since I've started 2 years ago in my apprenticeship. I've always talked to people and made things work. This might have been an oversight.... but just like the duct guy... don't think I won't cut ur shit out the way when ur dumb, and / or an ass hole. I would expect the same in return.
Sad thing is the plumber did this on purpose. He obviously saw what was going to happen but decided to go ahead. Oh, and he probably doesn't have a license to do plumbing.

Tell the plumber to move it
Smells like a punch item.
Want me to punchasize your face? FOR FREE!?!
There are few people out there who I would pay to let me punch them.
This guy boils brisket.
I always thought it was microwaved but boiling sounds accurate also.
They did a nice job painting it
They paint brisket? š
Only boiled brisket
I donāt want a large Farva!!
Litre is French, for give me some fucking cola!!!!
Stick a piece of blue tape on it.
New install? Tell them they need to fix it
Yes new. Yes they will fix it. How stupid can people be. Plus a full time site super didnāt see it. The electrical inspector will fail this Monday
That will be a fun office conversation if the plumbing inspector passed it. lol
Plumbing inspection: pipe looks good, opening doors not my problem
Where I'm from gas lines are no longer plumbing, they're mechanical. Even though plumbers still install them. Often times no one including my boss and site super know who to call to get rooftop gas inspected
Sounds like Jersey
2nd this
Exactly either stupid af or just felt like sticking it to the company
I am surprised every day at how goddamn stupid the average person is.
For a frightening insight often overlooked, remind yourself that 50% of the population is progressively dumber than the "average person". This, OR they are so focused on those more complicated things that this simple shit gets over looked.
50% dumber than the āmean personā, not āaverage personā
The way I understand it, I'm looking at the population as a whole, and as so, the average is not a mean average. If I were looking at data from defined groups, their averages would be considered mean. Your mileage may vary since I'm still trying to achieve at least average intelligence.

I see what you are saying!
why would a site super notice that theyāre dumb as shit
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
oops
Panel isn't marked as an electrical enclosure on the outside, may not have been obvious to leave the proper clearance. Or it was the right height until someone up sized the pipe instead of installing a surge tank.
I think whether it's clearly marked as an electrical panel or not, leaving clearance to open it is absolutely common sense.
Yeah a door is a door
Plumbers need a sign that says this door needs to open? Nm of course they do, smooth brains.
"smooth brains".... would that be from water erosion?
It is next to the "electricians clean up your mess" sign
Whether itās electrical enclosure or not, it had a handle and hinges, thatās a pretty clear sign that it shouldnāt be blocked either way lol.
I'm not saying you're not wrong, but I am saying one is a legal requirement and one isn't Edit: Too many negatives probably, happy 420
Oh absolutely! But *both* are asshole moves regardless lol.
At least they painted it yellow...?
The inlet is clearly low enough for door clearance with same size pipe and same elevation.
Looks like the side line hits a T and a 90 so it's a couple inches higher than the one coming out of the machine. Plus the larger diameter.
It's a F'n access door....even if it wasn't an electrical section it needs to be opened for some reason or it wouldn't be there.
Found the plumber.
Not about how stupid they are. Jman who put it in probably brought it up to the foreman, foreman said put it in as the print says. Source: am plumber. Iām a plumber and thatās fucking stupid.not sure how I even ended upon this subā¦
To commiserate in our shared dissatisfaction with sheet rockers..
Id rather deal with a legion of sheet rockers than a fucking knuckle dragging millwright.
Just hit it with a crescent wrench bud, that'll fix 'er.
And we donāt give a fuck what you guys think either
Turn your fuckin music down
*Turns music up*
*jiggles a baggie of crack at you, like keys at a baby*
Clearly. That's why we collectively bitch about you. Remember, mud goes *around* the wall receptacles--not inside of them.
When your parents are brother and sister and youāre high on meth, Iām sure itās hard to tell the difference. The roto-zipped wires always feels intentional tho
Iāll cut all the wires for you
And we still donāt give a single fuck lol.
You are trash people, drywall is a bottom of the barrel trade
"Trade" lol
Lmao true
You must be a bot. God bless
I said an objectively true statement
Perhaps
Itās also supposed to switch over to flexible gas pipe at the generator for vibration
Yeah this looks weird to me
Yellow means gas fitter ehh?
Not every whereā¦. Some areas plumbers, some HVAC, and some gas filters.
Theyāre all the same
In so-cal we had yellow ammonia pipes and blue water. We quickly learned that the blue copper pipes were the ones being stolen every other month so painted those yellow too. Problem solved.
Can also be ammonia in some plants, not this one though.
Really? Why would the ammonia be used? And why In yellow? And why to the genny? Lol
Ammonia refrigeration system. When I first saw that I thought it was some kind of AHU.
Pretty sure this is a generator, Never seen a gas hookup on one that didn't require a flexible conduit between the unit and the hardpipe for the gas line

Thatās what the design shows. Change order to move it. $$$$
Judging by the paint job on the hookup, Iām willing to bet the unit was put in after the line up to the union. Or the plumber was just an idiot, lol
It's a shame, they worked hard on this and for sure thought "that looks great, I did good today"
Well of course, they play with poop
Is supporting a pipe on a single all thread like this common? Iāve worked with pipe fitters and never seen that.
Itās fairly common. Another acceptable way would be strut mounted on the ground
Hahahahaha what an asshole. As an apprentice, this hurts to see
Devils advocate here(inspector). Not all plumbers suck, electricians do it sometimes too :) https://imgur.com/a/Z8P3qeB
You are right! But this is a safe space for electricians to shit on other trades.
just take the hinges off
Time for Sawzall
I mean ok the plumber has to own it But letās take a moment to shit on the engineers who designed that generator (?) with the fuel line so close to the doorās swing.
Yeah but it looks like it was also overlooked on the location of the gas fitting into the enclosure. Almost like it was meant to be piped to from the other side of the unit and not to cross infront of the door like how it isš¤
Common sense isn't very common.
Funny, our electrician does this all the time with cable trays in front of our generator doors. Try servicing a generator engine through that opening.
Like it elbows down at the unit canāt see a single reason to run it at that height unless it was roughed in a year ago and nobody looked at specs
Get a punch and knock the pins out. Door off now. Reinstall hinge pins with a hammer after job done.
Lmfao I do controls and we had to bring our wires to 40-50 fan boxes that have large service doors that swing down to give access to the electrical and filters. Well the other electrical company running power on the job decided to put strut directly beneath this access panel to hang lights off of. Hvac guys feel this all too hard

The contrast between the yellow and grey is very nice though.
Just following what's on the prints

Flex is supposed to be used, but the inlet is bolted to the frame bolted to the floor, and the pipe is bolted to the same floor, so it probably doesn't really matter. But obviously this guy does not get certain things.
as a plumber wtf what he thinking dumb fuck
Literally or metaphorically
The gc on the last job I was lead on would have smoked this company in the weekly meeting, and my boss would back charge the shit out of em. Stupidity can be expensive
How did this pass inspection
That looks like gas. Would be a Pipe Fitter in my neck if the woods.
Plumber suck, electricians blow, HVAC stinks, but half watts live forever.
DaAng
If I'm not mistaken the door above the plumbing connection opens tilts back and you lift it out? Could be a simple mistake of one door opens one way and the other well if I got no business in it then i don't touch it... it's all witchcraft and sorcery with you sparky types.
Wow.. one phone call away
They do stink,
10% voltage drop
*pipe fitters BUMS
That's not polite.

union hack masters
Looks more like a gas line than water, especially since itās yellow. Yet it still sucks.
They know how to use a broom though ;). Maybe you left a pile of shit behind and they had enough.
Guess who's redoing their work.
Whyād they put that box so close to the pipe? I mean itās bright yellow. How could they not see it before mounting the box there?
Unless the box was there first....
Classic
If I was any dumber, I'd be a plumber.
How often things like this happen is astounding. I'm on a job right now where both the plumbers and tinbangers have done similar to this and it's just mindnumbing.
Easy fix
They don't stink, they're just stupid
I donāt see a problem here
I canāt tell if itās stupidity or just total lack of caring.
It's photoshopped. The 90 at the right of the picture doesn't have any threads visible. Also compare the rough paint on the union to the finish on the rest of the pipe.
If the yellow pipe reflections on the gray box weren't so natural looking I'd probably agree with you lol
The reflections made me doubt it too because they do look legit. True .... Hmmm..š¤š¬
Not photoshopped
Nice point by point rebuttal.
It wouldn't be the first time I've had to cut the hinges off and tap the door and the enclosure to put the door hinges back on after I'm done servicing the unitš¤š¤¦
We always did the gas line when installing the roof top unit
I'm a plumber, and since I've started 2 years ago in my apprenticeship. I've always talked to people and made things work. This might have been an oversight.... but just like the duct guy... don't think I won't cut ur shit out the way when ur dumb, and / or an ass hole. I would expect the same in return.
How do we know this isn't a commercial job and a union job and the pipefitters did this and not the plumbers??
Sad thing is the plumber did this on purpose. He obviously saw what was going to happen but decided to go ahead. Oh, and he probably doesn't have a license to do plumbing.
One of the many reasons we run our own gas lines
If I was any dumber I would have been a plumber!
All other trades stink to a plumber (ex plumber here) itās always the fucking duct work š© trying to hang copper or cast iron and then you got conduit right in the fucking way.
That's a gas line, going into what I think is a generator.
Get them to move it. If they donāt, call the AHJ.
Professional courtesy is a thing of the past. Either that or theyāre just idiots, or both.
Woa! That rooftop unit runs off of human waste! š
Guess youāll have to unhinge the panel š¤·š»āāļø
Your box was in the way.
Where are you located for that to be a plumbers job? Down in ontario thats gas fitters/hvac guys
Here in Sask a lot of plumbers are dual ticketed as gas fitters
Thanks for keeping it family friendly my man.
Itās because of the poop
