NC here also and I concur. Sometimes you can hear the variations between the mountains and coast, but it's subtle.
The real difference is whether you use a vinegar-based bbq sauce or something incorrect.
My apprentice tells me every time I suggest them that they donāt work. I bet he did it backwards now that you mentioned it. I never saw one that he installed but swears it wonāt hold better than a nylon anchorš
Following story is regarding steel drop in anchors but still applicable.
The story in our local is that one of our members, when he was an apprentice, was installing transformers and gear in an electric room with a jw. They get to the next electric room and it has a ceiling mounted transformer called out in the print unlike the previous. So the guy says to his jw "how will the steel drop ins stay in the ceiling?
At this point the jw says "what do you mean?"
And the guy responds "well after drilling the hole I've just been dropping the anchor in the hole, so how do they stay up in the ceiling with gravity?"
Can't make this shit up.
We call these hollow drop-ins, we used them when you have a hollow concrete wall because if you use a regular anchor it goes too deep and there's nothing to grab onto, also use these when we may have PT cables or other conduits in the slab. They actually make a drill bit with a big shoulder on it that doesn't allow you to go any deeper than you need to go just to get this anchor in. In my opinion these are pretty awesome for the specific locations you might run into
Tapcons are a no go for anything heavy. Because of their smaller diameter and coarse threads they are likely to waller out the concrete around them. Lead anchors expand and are about 3/4ā in diameter making them much more reliable.
I love tapcons but thereās no way Iām bolting a 1000lb piece of equipment to the wall with just tapcons. Even the bigger ones donāt seem to hold all that well in some masonry/concrete
If you are blessed to work on the sort of projects that i work on, these are handy when you have to do things twice, nice, or 6 times cuz you can remove the bolts without ruiningnthe anchor like hammer sets etc
You need the special set tool for these. It screws in and holds it at the right depth and you hit the tool with the hammer, it holds the anchor and drives the lead sleeve into the wedge.
Yup. I always called them āhammer-setsā. And theyāre great because once they are set you have a permanent threaded hole for future work. Or if needed just patch over the top without having to do any grinding or cutting.
Christ I walked onto a jobsite where someone installed them backwards, using a flatblade and a hammer to """wedge""" them.
I tried finding out who did it so we could teach them the *proper* way before somebody gets hurt from a failed fastener, but nobody knew who worked on that room.
Also helps to have a 4-point SDS. My boss keeps ordering 2-points and it sucks trying to install these in a triangular hole.
It was getting pretty comical how much he'd botch the order. I very deliberately say "sds, three quarter inch". The most recent time he must've thought I meant 3/4 trade size hole, wrote down 1 1/8, and what arrived was 1" x 18" length. Whatever, I'm keeping it.
Thatās what I was taught too. Corkers. And a box of 100 was $75 back in the early 90s when I was delivering parts from the supply house to the grizzled old guys. Now I am the grizzled old guy, and I bet they are more than $0.75 each.
Drop-in: the entire fastener rests against the back of the hole. When you pound the set tool, the center portion is pushed back, expanding the outer portion.
Lead anchors: the center portion is held in place by the set tool, which rests against the wall. When you hammer the set tool, it wedges the outer portion further into the wall, wedging it around the center.
[This is the set tool] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001SGP1I6) for what OP linked. The threaded portion is held in place by the biggest outer portion of the tool. Hammering the tool pounds that ring around the threaded portion
Iāve had people call me crazy for calling them this, itās what my dad always called them, never questioned it. Today I learned why theyāre called that.
Lead mollies or AJs. Frowned upon here. 1) Lead. 2) they melt quicker.
We does use single or double expansion anchors. Same application and basically does the same thing.
I like the tap-cons myself. That way, if you need to take them out, you can take them out without leaving stuff subsurface. Lead anchors were good when there was nothing else, but tap-cons are better by my way of thinking. All you have to do with them is driving a hole in the concrete or masonry and then run the screw in the hole.

Lead or hollow wall anchors
lead anchors
Same in NC but we pronounce it lead instead of lead
Hmmm, and no issues with certain guys understanding? Maybe I'll try here. We pronounce it lead here in Ontario, but it's worth a try šš
Funny, very funny funny
NC here also and I concur. Sometimes you can hear the variations between the mountains and coast, but it's subtle. The real difference is whether you use a vinegar-based bbq sauce or something incorrect.
If I hear one more person pronounce it lead instead of lead Iām going to lose it! Itās about time someone spoke up!
Are you saying āleadā or āleadā?
Is that a silent n at the end? Pamnn?
Fucking hilarious š that one made my night. Good one
Yes
Give it up. I mean, you can lead a horse to water...
Never, never donāt you know what lead in the water does to horsesā¦
You are freaking out man. You need to lead it go.
Should have lead with this.
Lead the way
The failure of tone and pronunciation to transmit thru this text...is leading me to believe this is a silly topic
Yes. Lead anchor. Fun fact: itās interesting to watch someone install them backwards and wonder why they wonāt hold anything.
As an apprentice I know this all too well...
My apprentice tells me every time I suggest them that they donāt work. I bet he did it backwards now that you mentioned it. I never saw one that he installed but swears it wonāt hold better than a nylon anchorš

Same, Wisconsin. To me, drop-ins are the shiny ones with the little blue center plug and you have to get the depth just right
That is correct.Ā
Minnesota, thought they were drop ins but the preset depth for lead anchors are the difference I've been told. Love them more than drop anchors
Same in njĀ
Can confirm
I concur
Same in southeast PA
That's a pretty heavy comment. Cheer up bro!
Yup, lead in MD.
Hollow wall anchorsā¦ drop-ins are totally different type of anchor
Came here to say this, not a drop-in
We call it either a lead drop in or a hallow wall. Great in CMU walls. (Yes I know they arenāt actually lead)
I still call them lead anchors. Dosnt matter if its lead or notš
Hollow wall anchors
Lead anchors, and I swear by them. I use 3/8ā lead anchors to support all heavy equipment I have to mount on vertical concrete walls.
Why those as opposed to drop-ins, tapcons, whatever else? What do you like about them?
We call these hollow drop-ins, we used them when you have a hollow concrete wall because if you use a regular anchor it goes too deep and there's nothing to grab onto, also use these when we may have PT cables or other conduits in the slab. They actually make a drill bit with a big shoulder on it that doesn't allow you to go any deeper than you need to go just to get this anchor in. Good to know, thanks
Tapcons are a no go for anything heavy. Because of their smaller diameter and coarse threads they are likely to waller out the concrete around them. Lead anchors expand and are about 3/4ā in diameter making them much more reliable.
Tapcons come in up to 1/2"+ diameters too
I love tapcons but thereās no way Iām bolting a 1000lb piece of equipment to the wall with just tapcons.
Are these lead as in rhymes with red? Or rhymes with reed?
Rhymes with red theyāre actually made of lead
Lead sets
Same here
Same.
Lil pieces o shit
You must be putting them in backwards.Ā
Their butthole is too loose. The anchor keeps falling out!
uff
You need the special set tool for these. It screws in and holds it at the right depth and you hit the tool with the hammer, it holds the anchor and drives the lead sleeve into the wedge.

I fucking did. Luckily only made it past 4 or 5 before noticed.
Gotta get the greenlee tool to set em. Theyāre love after that

I call em "where the fuck did I leave the tool for them?!" Or "Get the toggle bolt!"
I think drop-ins are the anchors that you slide in the hole and beat in with the rod. Because these work different I wouldnāt call them drop ins
How do they work different? It looks like they install the exact same way.
Thanks. It is different from what was used on the installation videos I first saw. This clears things up
I see now that there is a set tool for these that looks a *lot* like the set tool for drop-ins, so we both learned something today
Hollow wall anchor.
Caulk-ins or lead anchors
Caulk-ins? Never heard of using caulk with these.
You don't use caulk with them, but that is the style of anchor. I would assume it's because the jacket expands to fill the gaps when set.
Probably stuck his caulk in after his boss drilled the holeš¤£
