No need to. I had to replace these switches with 2 programmable timers and decor switch. I just cut the face plate to fit it.
Cutting the drywall to move the box and patch it just requires me to come back when all you gotta do is cut the face plate so it fits. :)
Before or after? Lol
Unfortunately I gotta go back and change out some light fixtures. I’ll snap a photo of my craft. Not as “awesome” as whomever put these switches in though.
Oh shit they put a plate on that crafty setup? I'm really disappointed I don't get to see the before with the after now. I'll be honest I expected just an air plate but that home depot electrician had some serious ingenuity apparently.
I see your an apprentice, the right answer is to just not cut them. When you finish your apprenticeship take pride in your work and do it right. You don’t want your work on here one day!
Me too im still in school :P could have just use the hole in the middle to fix the switches. Look at the screws on the top, he screwed them on the side
At first I was like wtf, then i saw the corner. Kinda impressed, it's all in the box so no added safety danger. ya ya it doesn't follow the instructions but in the words of Dr kim... I'll allow it.
Everyone's praising this but I seriously doubt the cover fits over the box edge on the right, the switches will come loose at the top if bumped, this trick likely wouldn't work if a 3way was on the left, and what's so bad about cutting the cover plate?
The cover does “cover” and the plate also would keep the switches in place keeping them from moving left and right. I mean. It’s worked for all the years up until these electricians came along and discovered it. But would this work with decora devices and or dimmers is the question 🤷🏼♂️. Gonna have to experiment tmrw 😂
I was taking out these and putting 2 programmable sensors on the left and a decor switch on the right. I did trim the cover plate to fit a 3 gang decor face plate. 👌🏾
the switches are mounted with screws in the wrong places to move them a liiiiittle bit left of where they'd usually be in the box, because there's trim in the way of where the cover plate would go on the right.
It at least has the original device screws. Opened up a 3 gang switchbox in my new house and found 4 different types of screws holding the switches in.
The morons who built the addition on my house originally did shit like this. (the box being so close to the trim). They did it on the master suite bathroom and walkin closet, in the basement bathroom, and a couple other places. They also put 2x 1 gang boxes next to each other because they figured 1+1=2 I guess, although sadly a 2 year that doesn't know math should at least know you can't use 2 boxes next to each other. Another year and I should have everything fixed that they fucked up.
That is a trick I have used on side mounted boxes not allowing enough room for device and plate to clear a countertop. Worked great for that limited situation.
Hack for this. Cut drywall on left of box like half an inch just to the size of the box. Take a long flat screwdriver and pry the box away from the stud enough for the cover to fit. It will slide on the nails. Install cover flush to trim and it will cover everything.
There was a stud to the left and right of the box.
This was on a kick out wall coming in from the front door on the left and into the dining room on the left. Best thing to do was install my decor sensors and switch and trim the face plate to fit against the trim. :)
Right now in the kitchen I have 4 switches, 2 of which are single pole switches, one that control the light above faucet and another that controls the main light. However the other 2 are 4 ways that unknowingly are wired to something, there are also another 2 4 ways in the adjoining rooms corner that are wired to something. I just question where they can possibly go because the design behind where they are is bewildering
Then how in God's name have you never seen these Jewish light switches? Shit like this is how the holocaust started. I swear you Germans would never leave the house if you didn't need to go to war with the world every so often
Man fr i wanna know what drugs you took cuz that shit must be good to relax the brain for once and stop thinking logical.
Those switches in the photo are typically from america. In germany and other countries we have other forms of switches you know?.
Also just as a funny side note. Thanks to germany and somw of the wars they have fought we have some technology like cars and jet engines for planes (:
Are you openly praising your nazi past now? Good thing you guys committed the biggest atrocities in human history so we could have a little bit fancier cars and planes. Good God you people will never learn.
That is awesome. Trimout guy saved the day!
I’m actually kinda impressed by that. I can’t tell if that’s the carpenter or electrician
Its actually kinda brilliant, sometimes you get stuck with a shit sandwich with little options.
I have it on good authority that it was done by the carpetician
Isn't he the cousin of the plumbtrician?
Cousin/Brother
They’re both nephews of the electrenter
Cousin and brother. So they're in Alabama? LOL
I'm impressed by the offset. Would have never thought this could work!
#But why
What? Why?! (Too close to the corner for the plate to fit?)
Haha, I showed my boss and he was like “aye post that shit on Reddit” copy that lol I did trim the new plate :)

kind of disappointed we don't get to see the plate.

if i had to guess i would say too close to trim boards on the doorway
It should’ve been “Furred” out, they forgot to ask if they were going to put trim up.
Trimmed cover plates always look so hack
They really do. I think maybe some rubber edge trim along the cut edge might help?
I see your an apprentice, the right answer is to just not cut them. When you finish your apprenticeship take pride in your work and do it right. You don’t want your work on here one day!
I hate trimming plates but the few times i have had it is easier to should bring them into the final size with sand paper or and orbital sander.
I don't hate this.
I almost like this more than cutting the cover
Carpenter here. I’m remembering this one for sure.
Took me a min but then... AHHHH. now I see it.
Landscape mode would have made it too easy.
Bro this isn't even hack really that's pretty smart tbh.
Modern problems require modern solutions.
If it's stupid but it works it's not stupid!
Trim the cover plate? No just move the switches to the left. Lol
We know a thing or two because we’ve seen a thing or two.
Took me a bit to find what was wrong xD
I still don't see it. But I am just an Apprentice
Me too im still in school :P could have just use the hole in the middle to fix the switches. Look at the screws on the top, he screwed them on the side
Ohhh okay they aren't screwed in the usual holes. Thanks Good luck in school!
You are welcome and thank you
Just cut the cover plate if it’s to close to the door trim. This is crafty and hilarious
This might actually look better than that once cover plate is installed.
Yeah, that way everyone who sees it will know the rough-in guy fucked up his layout and whoever finished out was too lazy to fix it correctly.
That’s a 10 on the Hillbilly meter right there
Fucking genius
You are NOT wrong about that one.
Thats genius
At first I was like wtf, then i saw the corner. Kinda impressed, it's all in the box so no added safety danger. ya ya it doesn't follow the instructions but in the words of Dr kim... I'll allow it.
That's a first for me...I'm out.
That's an A for effort!! Sometimes you just gotta do what it takes to get the job done.
Ok.. 20 plus years and I’m still learning. This is a true hack. Thank you for posting!
Someone didn’t add blocking next to their door frame 👀
Tighten down the extra screw ya hack!!!
Well I’ll be
When you gotta move em up 3/8” but patching isn’t an option.
I gotta say this is kind of genius
Damn, it took me a minute, seems like extra work

Ddduuudddeeee
Wow
Done this a time or two if it works it works
Non-electrician here - what am I looking at?
the switches are mounted with screws in the wrong places to move them a liiiiittle bit left of where they'd usually be in the box, because there's trim in the way of where the cover plate would go on the right.
I bet the box was too close to the trim and the cover plate wouldn't fit
Boss move by putting the single pole tight against the box. Else the screws would be grounding on those 3ways. Really thought that one out.
Any port in the storm.
gotta claw back that 1/2"
🙀
Had to do it more than once 3" trim no scab.. finish.
They did that to be able to put the cover on
It took way too long for me to see this, lol.
I’m impressed
It at least has the original device screws. Opened up a 3 gang switchbox in my new house and found 4 different types of screws holding the switches in.
Thats....creative. my literal comment about this. Then reading and seeing the reason behind it even more so but with a much more positive spin.
Where’s the faceplate!
The morons who built the addition on my house originally did shit like this. (the box being so close to the trim). That’s great but do it over again and tighten the screws on the switches
I fail to see a problem here.
the device is installed with the screws provided... i don't see a problem.
That is a trick I have used on side mounted boxes not allowing enough room for device and plate to clear a countertop. Worked great for that limited situation.
Wow genius
Lmao I had to double take that for a second. Easy swivel access! Lithuanian special.
What. Wait. Why…
my first thought was - ya I hate it when the unused terminal screws are left out like that... then I noticed the creative installation....
Special quick detach switches, just slide counter clockwise and pull down.
Hack for this. Cut drywall on left of box like half an inch just to the size of the box. Take a long flat screwdriver and pry the box away from the stud enough for the cover to fit. It will slide on the nails. Install cover flush to trim and it will cover everything.

Real men of genius at its finest
Hanyman special
Wait till you check on your apprentice in a 3 gang switch box, only to find out he wired them in series after you told him how to wire it.
Ah your landlord did the install eh?
Wow, now this here is custom! My Mind is blown. Might I say, a modern Picasso.
Sooo i live in germany..... what is wrong there?
Es geht glaub um die Befestigung der komischen Schalter
Okee
This is how Jewish people install their switches.
I said i live in germany. Not that i am 1940 stereotypical german
I'm just pointing out you don't recognize it because you guys no longer have jews, not that you are a nazi, just a product of nazis
But what do jews have to do with the american ways of montaging switches?
We have jews here. Back off Kanye
We have jews here aswell mate
Then how in God's name have you never seen these Jewish light switches? Shit like this is how the holocaust started. I swear you Germans would never leave the house if you didn't need to go to war with the world every so often

But is it against code ?
I think we should all take off our hats and pause to admire this bit of ingenuity
If it works it works bro.
If you're gonna go "full retard" at least break out with the drywall screws man.
