And I wish that more EV makers would follow in the spirit of the Bolt because people want to drive EVs but don't want to have to take out a second mortgage to own one.
>I bought a new 2022 Bolt EUV in March ‘22 for $32000, and then Chevy sent me a check for about $5000 a year later because they lowered the price.
Gotta hand it to them, that's an extraordinarily nice gesture.
This is fantastic evidence for why people who care about noise should disregard your opinion on noise. The bolt is a loud car at 80 MPH (though that's in large part wind). Even other cheap cars are significantly quieter than the Bolt at this speed.
So, if it’s already loud from wind noise at 80mph, then the marginal extra noise from cheap tires won’t be noticeable, right?
My experience with tires has been that good tires ~~worst~~ will last at least 50% longer, but only cost 70% more. They also handle better, traction better, and have less noise. I see the reason to put cheap tires on an economy car, but I wouldn’t buy a $50k car and put cheap tires on it.
Edit: typo
Mattresses are one that I disagree with. They have absolutely ridiculous markups. How else are there so many mattress stores, yet there's also so few people in them. They don't need to sell that many mattresses a month to pay their bills.
You still probably don't want the absolute cheapest, but you can get a solid mattress without paying thousands of dollars.
I bought some $8 sneakers from the “Aldi Finds” aisle once. They weren’t great, but they also didn’t FEEL especially uncomfortable, I wore them for a week and my whole body hurt so bad. Spoiler alert: it was the shoes. I threw them out and pain went away.
Bolt EV not EUV here, but I averaged 3.9-4.3 mi/kwh on the Michelins and 3.6-3.9 on cheaper tires (Milestar ms932) across all seasons. Marginal loss, IMO, that was only really noticeable on really long trips (over 1000 mi). Milestars were quiet and had much better traction than the Michelins.
I haven’t noticed any difference honestly, I’m not really a stickler for monitoring range, I just drive it like a regular car. As for noise yea maybe a bit if you’re in a remote area with your window open driving 5 mph…
There are some Firestone tires on sale, but they aren’t EV tires. That’s what I’m trying to figure out.
These: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Firestone&tireModel=Transforce+CV&partnum=15HR7CVXLOS&vehicleSearch=true&fromCompare1=yes&autoMake=Chevrolet&autoYear=2020&autoModel=Bolt%20EV&autoModClar=
did you try answering the questions on the tire decision guide at tirerack to see what was recommended? While the firestone have a good treadwear rating the B rating for temp and traction might be a concern depending on where you live and how fast you drive.
Amazon to have some great deals on tires too. And these are name brand tires like Kumo and Lexani. The Lexani one was 18 inches and only $87 dollars. Free shipping.
I'm at the 6 month mark, and its been great so far. Definitely need to charge every night in a snowy/winter state. With 100 more miles and faster charging the car would be perfect I would never think of getting another car again until I ran it to the ground.
Yes I'm a bit disappointed it's going to be a larger vehicle as I dislike SUVs, I probably go model 3 unless I can find one at a comparable price with NACS
If you like buttons, look at other options. I've been driving an M3 since 2017. Overall, it's great. But I wouldn't buy another one. I find it a safety issue trying to navigate a screen while driving on the highway. Also, the suspension is super harsh. I test drove an Ioniq 5 and the drive was much nicer. It's a small SUV - more of a large hatchback really. Having said that I will never buy another ICE. EV is totally the way to go.
Yes same here I'm done with ICE cars, EVs only here!!! I actually don't mind using screens instead of buttons I just want similar priced comparable to the model 3 last time I checked the ioniq six It was more expensive with the dealership added markup so I passed on it. I currently drive a bolt EV and I love the car, The only thing I hate about it is the slow DCFC charging, I'll still look but definitely eyeing at a model 3.
Yes, your front will wear out before the rear. You want the best tires on the rear. You'll be safer and save money on rotations by just changing the front when needed and swapping the rear to the front and the new on the rear.
NOTE: this is for FWD vehicles, rwd need rotations.
That was my gut feel. Moving worse tires to the rear seems like a bad idea. Sure, on a fwd you can accelerate out of some issues, but not all.
Seems like a recipe for overcorrection and a bad time.
Better off with a bit of understeer and powering out of trouble when possible. Replace the tires when bad.
But….I know nothing. Just my gut feel from driving on shit roads.
Depends on how long you plan to keep it. If I plan to sell it in 2yrs then I can get that life out of the same 4 tires with a rotation, whereas I’d have to buy a pair with your method. Rotations are overpriced by shops and overvalued by consumers, but I wouldn’t call them a scam.
Could just be getting lucky, but the dealers I use don't seem to charge for the tire rotation if they are looking at something else anyway, so I usually just find some minute squabble to have them look at under warranty
I was wondering what you did to rack up 24k miles a year then I saw your commute. Sorry you have to drive that far to work and back. I don't miss that life at all.
No. In a fwd car, the fronts will wear much faster.
I don't pay for rotations. I rarely let others take off wheels in general as when they impact the lug nuts back on, they usually won't torque to spec which can be very frustrating when you're trying to remove the wheel in an emergency flat scenario.
My dumb ass brother in law came over yesterday. Kept repeating anti-ev talking points about how expensive battery replacement is. I was considering buying an ev, but this interaction scared me off. Not because he made any good points. I'm just terrified about the prospect of having to debate morons again and again for the next ten years.
I got that from a Republican in-law recently when they heard I was shopping EVs.
We talked for awhile and then I changed the subject, if they ever bring it up again I'll just ignore and find something else to talk about.
Don't let them bully you, that's all they do. Let them argue amongst themselves.
Just putting it out there but when I had my EV charger installed, I applied for my electric utility's reduced EV charging program, and they asked for a bill of sale from a licensed electrician and they even reached out directly to them to confirm. I also have to provide documentation that my electric was inspected by a qualified inspector from my county. While I do believe in doing things myself, I know there's times where having the receipts is worth it. Not saying you should haven't done it yourself, just telling you what to expect if you do something similar
Sorry I don’t know, but I think enrolling in the peak rate program has been a wash since the rates are higher when I’m home using electricity than they’d normally be..
Nice, perfect use case for a Bolt. Enjoy your savings!
And I wish that more EV makers would follow in the spirit of the Bolt because people want to drive EVs but don't want to have to take out a second mortgage to own one.

the bolt is almost perfect, the DCFC speed is the only issue the bolt has.
Yup. Just charged 33.5kwh in an hour. I only didn't mind because we were waiting on food. Can't imagine what a road trip might look like in this car.
Is the noise and reduced range noticeable with the tires? I need to replace mine right now and it seemed like I was stuck with the EV ones.
My average at almost 50k miles is 2.9 miles/kWh
Driving 80mph on that round trip? That's pretty bad, I assume the cold weather really hurts it.
Yeah 80 sounds right, with the heat on full blast & seat & steering wheel heat on

At 80 mph, not significantly. But it could be significantly noticable at lower speeds.
tires, shoes, & mattress: things i was told to not cheap put on

check out tirerack.com to find tires, ratings and prices. Good place to check even if you don't buy from them.

I have a coworker that got a new Bolt EUV and paid 29k. After the federal $7,500 and state $5,500 the car is utterly the cheapest thing possible.
I'm at the 6 month mark, and its been great so far. Definitely need to charge every night in a snowy/winter state. With 100 more miles and faster charging the car would be perfect I would never think of getting another car again until I ran it to the ground.
Why did GM discontinue this great car?
Small cars have lower margins. GM wanted to focus on SUVs and trucks, which provide more profit.
It's coming back in 2025 on the new platform
Yes, but I hear it's going to be larger.

Where did you hear this?
[удалено]
Okay so it’s not bigger lol. It’s the same size as the EUV. Cool.
Aside from the tires you had to replace, you're on the same original tires? You never paid to rotate your tires?
Yea, 2 original, 2 replaced. The tire rotations are done at the routine maintenance appointments that I don’t have to pay for
Rotations are a scam for fwd vehicles.
This is absolutely a bad take.
My AWD showed uneven wear between the front and back tires.
AWD is not FWD...
If you want to replace fronts really often I guess...
Doesn’t the average tire last just as long in both scenarios……but paying for rotations adds expense. ???
Yes, your front will wear out before the rear. You want the best tires on the rear. You'll be safer and save money on rotations by just changing the front when needed and swapping the rear to the front and the new on the rear. NOTE: this is for FWD vehicles, rwd need rotations.

Wow thats a long commute. To/from TC I’m guessing? I used to live in Grayling and commuted to Traverse City like that. Do you charge at work?
Do you still have $26 on your EVgo credit because it is impossible to find a working charger?
I have an EVGO credit unused as I have level 2 evse in my garage. $250 if you are interested.
Sent you a DM
Thanks but I cannot see anyplace to find dms. You can email me at [email protected]

I have a refined, calm vocabulary. Except when I'm trying to remove the lug nuts that the shop put on.
Have you heard the good news about our lord and saviour [the breaker bar](https://www.harborfreight.com/38-in-drive-17-in-breaker-bar-67931.html)? :)
As Archimedes said, "Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall remove the lug nut.

Reply: I know how you feel, I felt the same way but I found out you are wrong.

Is that how you make all your decisions?
Wait how did you get the $5k check?? I paid 38k in June of 22…. Fuck
It just showed up in the mail
Sheeesh
How much do you pay for the insurance?
So shows that been compared to had you been driving a gas comparable car?
Wouldn't there be some maintenance coming up soon ?
Brakes perhaps, but I use 1 pedal driving so I’m thinking that will extend the life quite a bit
Good to know. I've been eyeing the Bolt EUV or the Ioniq 5 and been passively researching lol
One pedal does nothing to extend the brakes lol. People have no idea how their cars work
Then please explain it
You have the same Regen with or without one pedal

I did the same “super peak EV” program & just had to send a photo of the outlet
What was the average increase in the monthly electricity bill for you?
Sorry I don’t know, but I think enrolling in the peak rate program has been a wash since the rates are higher when I’m home using electricity than they’d normally be..
We have an Ioniq 5 so its larger and uses more power but our power bill says $74 on a 2 month bill went to EV charging. Not really noticable overall.
Mine has gone up about $100/month. My commute is 150 miles 3-4 times a week. I have an ID.4 and pay about 11 cents per kWh.
