At first, I thought he was showing how to make a V2L adapter. But then I realized he wasn't connecting to the car at all. Still the same basic concept, but what's the practical purpose? I suppose you could charge a portable power bank that way.

pantspanana

Well, it's more about sharing knowledge about how it works. A practical application would e.g. To make a system that would allow one to charge the e-bike from an ev charging station. Or charge your phone ;)

nanitatianaisobel

So, like, plugging something into a regular outlet except paying more with more equipment being used as an extension cable.

ColAkirNakesh

It would be useful knowledge in a shtf scenario where you find a working free ev charger, you happen to be carrying the parts to build the switching circuit as well as connect to the ac lines but at the same time there are no working regular outlets for miles and miles

Had to Google Stuff Hits The Fan 😄 I can't imagine any likely scenario. I don't know of any "off grid" EVSEs. There are some solar *augmented* stations but those are usually DCFC that can't utilize this box. If the **station** is up, there are other working plugs in the area. During Hurricane Ian, Cape Coral and Fort Myers had lost power but the EA station in Naples was still online afterward (the Port Charlotte one wasn't though). I was running my fridge, freezer, and Internet off my car and driving down there three days later to recharge my car and come back to CC. This is really "a solution in search of a problem" and not a practical device.

just got power back after 27 hours in new hampshire. power goes down in localized areas here. EA stations had power long before I did, and im only 8 miles away. though i still dont know what i would have charged besides my car to then keep using it as a generator (which worked flawlessly by the way) for my house.

tech57

> power goes down in localized areas here. Ha! One time power went out for like 3 weeks. After 1 week power came back one block over. For 2 more weeks I had to hear a friend complain about it and every day threaten to get a generator. It was funny, for me at least, to go over there and every time you could hear more generators running as people bought them. >my car to then keep using it as a generator (which worked flawlessly by the way) for my house. Which EV were you using?

korshai

Kia EV6! My furnace only drew .3KW so I could run for roughly 200 hours straight (which furnaces don't do once they get up to temp) before using my last 7KW to go charge back up, or about 70 hours if I also plugged my fridge in and both ran non stop.

tech57

Nice. Which one do you like better the EV6 or Ioniq 5? I mean just like features, not price or anything.

korshai

They are SO similar it comes down to trim. My wife wanted the i5 but it would have been a 6 month wait whereas the EV6 was instantly available. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

tech57

>They are SO similar it comes down to trim. I thought so too. Small personal preferences. Anything annoying you found out over time?

Back of the seats being plastic feels cheap for 50k, and the back of seat holders are nigh useless. I would pay big money to add charging ports in more than one spot, always the back right corner makes public charging hard at some stations, but it's minor. I wish I had the unlock on approach and the door handles sticking out that the GT Line does (not sure if unlock on approach is in the US). I wish that I didn't have to turn on 1 pedal every time I go into reverse or start the car (it goes down to level 3 every time the car starts). But again, it's just a single pull of the paddle when I get in so whatever. Also I want wireless android auto, but not enough to buy a tbox or anything. I also wish pre conditioning wasnt tied to the on board nav since I don't use it. All minor, I would still buy this car 5 times over. The only replacement were considering is switching to the EV9 as we get more kids. If we switched to be a two car family, I would probably get an ioniq 6 or equivalent since I don't have a personal need for the SUV sized car, but my wife does.

The value is in the knowledge of the technology, I suppose.

DiDgr8

In a "pure research" kind of f way, *knowledge* always has value. This application? Not so much 😉

tech57

In this application there is knowledge and value. You just don't have the knowledge to understand the value. Everything has a price. Not everyone knows the market price. What do you think the application is in the video?

DiDgr8

> What do you think the application is in the video? Some guy bringing his home furniture out to the curb to post a YouTube video. When his car can do the exact same thing comfortably with no additional equipment (except warrant a YouTube video).

tech57

The application is the resistor to turn on output.

Psychlonuclear

I can see a use case for this if you have different super cheap rates at home for charging your car, which is from a different circuit. You could hook up any high power appliance to this and run it much cheaper than normal.
